Thank you so much for releasing this! I have been trying to find this song from the sound track ever since I saw the movie!!
This is not from the official soundtrack. It's released by the soloist on his own. In both accompanied and unaccompanied versions.
When Schofield sat down to rest within that moment, I felt I could rest for a moment too.
That's EXACTLY the feeling i had back in the theater, it's crazy
Same here, I didn’t realize I was holding my breath until that moment.
You said it, I felt exhausted at that point and started breathing again.
Crazy
The movie is a masterpiece of a war movie
“Am I dying?”
“...Yes...”
Very simple lines, yet paints the harsh reality of war. That will stick with me forever.
What minute
This entire movie describes the horrors of war and what it does to men. It brings brotherhood to its peak.
For me, when he saw he was stabbed and whispered "jesus no", realizing he wasn't going to make it out of that scene, all in a matter of seconds, was just stunning, in a tragic way
Chill Chaos Yes, but this particular moment is what stuck out significantly to me. Wonderful film.
I cried. Oh my God I cried. I could feel my heart breaking.
“Will you write to my mom for me? Tell her I wasn’t scared.”

Rest in peace to my great grandfather Sgt. James Shaddick. Killed November 30, 1917.
One of millions.
@IAN NICKERSON mine was killed by an Austrian Hungarian on October 18, 1915
My grandfather was lucky enough to get out, was nearly shot in the head in Belgium 1915 I think.
@IAN NICKERSON I'd say he knows how it is a bit more than you tbh
My great grandfather was just a child at this point and I’m sure he was scared for live due to this and ww2 let our past generations Rest In Peace ✌️ for the greatness they have for filled in the heated battle of war and if it weren’t for them we would have lived a completely different life without nearly as much peace

It sounded heavenly. After all the shit lance corporal went through, this song was just otherworldly at first glance
It’s been a beautiful song for the better part of two centuries. Where the fuck have you been?

Maar veel fouten in de film ,heel veel
my theater was the most quietest, couldn’t hear anyone eating nor drinking, never heard anyone talking or walking out to the bathroom or something, everyone just sat there, watched the whole thing and silence.
Yeah!!!
It's the continuation take format. They don't get a break, we don't get one.
Great moment!
"Down to Gehenna, or up to the throne, he travels the fastest who travels alone"
Man I needed subtitles in the theatre for some of those accents. I totally thought he said "Down to the heather".
Sad foreshadowing
@@Martin-rz2yp That's what I was thinking. I only just realized that they didn't go alone. In the literal sense it just meant them two on their own, but that was like the director telling us what would happen. The main character needed to go alone to complete his mission and personal story arc.
What's mean "gehenna"???
@@cristianhilario4467 Gehenna or Gehinnom (literally translated as "Valley of Hinnom") is thought to be a small valley in Jerusalem. In the Hebrew Bible, Gehenna was initially where some of the kings of Judah sacrificed their children by fire. Thereafter, it was deemed to be cursed (Book of Jeremiah 7:31, 19:2-6)
The scene of Blake being stabbed was heartbreaking, and so sudden.
Bageled Meme War is cruel, unforgiving and it doesn’t care if he is the main character. If he dies, he dies.
@@nont18411 Drago: "If he dies, he dies"
Yeah the film had everyone thinking Blake was the main character then all of a sudden he is stabbed and the fear in his voice when he asked "am I dying?" Still makes me sad
@@PeterPing very very cringeworthy comment lol
Didn't see it coming.
Usually, I don't feel emotions during movies, but when he found out he's arrived at the right company, I felt so relieved. It was insane. Like, the weight had finally been lifted. Then it returned when he realised the general was halfway across the battlefield
Not to be rude, but if you have no emotion to share between a film you must be really bored of a ton of movies. So sad.
Isnt the point of seeing movies to experience emotion?
Same here
@@Joyous-Knight It depends if the movie is well made or not.
Exodusian most movies don’t make me feel that way because they aren’t good movies. Either that or they were not intending to portray a lot of emotion in favor of pure entertainment.

Pink Floyd.
Nice.
Wish you were here
Hey, you.
was so special to experience this on the big screen. the slow ease into the forest, once again feeling like you're in a dream... then we see d company of the 2nd devons, at first you wonder if they're even alive, then you wonder if schofield is really at his last tether... and then you just feel a small sense of relief, and you soak in the words of the song. "there'll be no sickness, toil or danger in that bright land to which i go..."
really hit me when i realised they sung that right before they headed off to almost certain death, had not schofield been there in time.
I love the idea of him being already dead when he arrives in the forest. That would've been so cool and thought provoking. It would make you wonder when exactly he had died and what had been the afterlife.
A good analysis. I felt what you described. This movie did a fantastic job of helping you feel what schofield felt. I just felt so peaceful listening to this. It seems like this movie not only did a good job connecting us to the main character, but it also connected us viewers to each other. God bless you fellow wayfaring stranger. 🙏🏻
My whole theater was dead silent during this scene. Cathartic moment.
Antoinette Gabrielle This movie gave me a proper cry. It made me relies what men in ww1 dealt with and the horrors that push men and brotherhood together.
I loved the entire movie. It shows World War One to almost perfect ability. The only thing is that the British generals didn’t care if they lost 1600 men. They lost far more at the Somme for nothing, and at Ypres, for even less. Yet, this was the best movie I ever saw. No other movie has even approached this movie’s image of the First World War. Many died for less, and I thought he was dead when he entered the forest. It would have made sense.
This film hit me pretty hard, I am a 19 year old from Devon so these lads coulda literally been from my town, it was a film that was inadvertently very personal to me and a lotta my mates felt the same
The Devonshire Regiment did really exist and they really were from Devon. Thought you should know. Many towns or cities formed regiments like that and lost their whole youth in a single battle, sometimes in a matter of hours. It's horrible to think about.

Going over Jordan is in reference to the sacrament of Holy Baptism-- dying and rising again to new life to the Promised Land-- from Egypt to the Promised Land aka Israel, symbolizing the transition from Earth to Heaven. Death and Resurrection
* the move from Egypt was through the Red Sea but many subsequent stories and accounts in the bible reference passing through the Jordan including Jesus' baptism by John thus beginning his ministry announcing the Gospel

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved, and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

I remember hearing from my friends to watch this movie because of how amazing it was, and since I’m in the military they thought I’d appreciate it more. This tells me what Tolkien must have seen in World War I which affected him so deeply that he produced The Lord of The Rings!
It didn't get a lot of buzz, but you should watch the movie "Tolkien" about his early life and the war. Good movie, and thought about it a lot while watching 1917.
Will Riley Tolkien is an absolute (hidden ?) gem 👌🏻
Tolkein would bitterly argue against that.
He didn't write the LOTR story because of his experiences in the war. He wrote LOTR because he was a genius scholar and intellectual. His life experiences helped to shape his story, yes, but they were not the inspiration for it.
I say "story" because I believe that, according to a biography I read about Tolkien, he originally wanted The Lord of the Rings to be one book, but his publisher complained over and over again that it was too long. So he had to divide it into different books, which he hated. His publisher still thought they were too long and Tolkien was frustrated for years because he had to limit his insanely brilliant creation due to the publisher's understanding of what types of books sell. He had to edit and edit until his publisher was finally satisfied.
@@barbaro267 jeez dude.you cant know for sure why did the Tolkien write the LOTR. He never explained why. He could have write it just to escape the reality of flashbacks of war
This song hits differently after seeing the film. The last moment many of those men would savour before going over the top, into the unknown.
As a man who doesn’t cry...when Schofield sat down with all the soldiers and listened to the singing I cried mainly because he looked so broken..this movie hit me hard
My great-great grandfather was there. Just as my great-grandfather. Both portuguese, fought for the Allies in the almost forgotten contribute of Portugal in WWI. My great-great grandfather fought there since April 1917, leaving in July 1919(don't know why). He fought in the second registered raid of german troops to the portuguese sector in 15th July 1917 in Neuve Chapelle and got wounded in battle. He also fough in the La Lys Battle on the Kaiserschlacht ofensive.
He died in 1941 due to respiratory problems due to the mustard gas and other chemical gases.
My great grandfather, was one of the first portuguese units to be deployed in the Western Front. He fough in a British Batallion, and got severely wounded, being evacuated in the British Hospital ship "Glengorn Castle". He died in 1980.
This is my way of showing them respect. Sharing their stories. May they both rest in peace
This made a lot of grown men cry in my cinema. The film itself and this part. 1917 is a BEAUTIFUL film.

I believed he had died, and the forest was just a dying hallucination. It made sense. Many died for so much less. Many of them yielded no gain for either side except more bodies to bury and maybe a few dozen meters of land. May we not forget- The Great War 1914-1918. Never ever forgetting this experience in the theater. Absolutely haunting yet beautiful. The theater for some reason felt so quiet after all that’s happened in the film. You were literally one of the the soldiers sitting all together and listening.
Seen the film an to be honest this was one of my favourite scenes
I first cried when Blake was dying. Then I couldn’t stop for the rest of the movie, and this moment when he juste take a break from his tiring mission, it was the moment my cheeks transformed into the Niagara Falls
I am an Austrian (20) and I loved this movie. I spent my summer holidays with a few very good friends from Britain, France and Italy who I love and consider my brothers - the nations who fought against Austria/Germany in WWI. I am literally crying my eyes out, because it breaks my heart thinking that just over 100 years ago we would have been supposed to hate eachother & to kill eachother on the battlefield, only because some sick emperors & governments told us to. It would have been our duty to do so. They were spreading some false values of patriotism and pride. That was all just wicked manipulation from evil, powerhungry individuals. The exact same individuals who always wanted us to hate & fight eachother. Just the thought of me on one, and my good friend Charles on the other side, trying to kill eachother, yet thinking that we are doing the right thing, leaves me so sad. All those young people who could have had a bright future. All those people killing eachother, yet could have been best friends. Their fates destroyed by someone determining their future. It doesn't matter if they were German, British, French, American, etc.etc.etc. NOTHING! NOTHING good from wars. War is the worst thing that happened to humanity. DOWN with the ones who are trying to control/sacrifice others for their selfish reasons. I have nothing but CONTEMPT for those who are trying to spread conflict, all the emperors, governors, etc. who are responsible. I hope that after 2 WWs we are finally smarter and won't try to harm eachother anymore. No more brother wars. No more wars. Sending my love to all my brothers and sisters. Always keep on forming your own opinions through experiences and always think critical.

@@reckless4439 "Going Home" can also be seen as meaning their death. The Idea that humans we are only visiting in this life and that our true home is in the Kingdom of God with our father (God). As a Warrior its your duty to walk close to death everyday and in the words of Tecumseh " When it comes your time to die, be not like those whose hearts are filled with the fear of Death, so that when their time comes they weep and pray for a little more time to live their life over again in a different way. Sing your Death song and die like a hero going home"
Wayfaring stranger is a old Protestant hymn (though its theologically compatible with any denomination of Christianity). Its about death and being raised to heaven with God.
"Yet there's no sickness, toil nor danger to that bright light to which I go" .... Definitely sounds like a metaphor for death and going to Heaven

RIP to the heroes who gave their lives at such a young age for their countries and to the ones who lived through and came home with unforgettable trauma and life changing injuries. Same goes to the ones who serve today. I pray a conflict like that never occurs again. I’m saddened that it ever happened, a lost generation. No matter what you may think about your own life you are blessed to be living now and not at this time. Live a full life in their honour because many of them never had the opportunity to do so. Thank you for fighting for my and our freedom. May those souls live forever in paradise.
The fact that some soldiers got shot in front of their families about to come home from war and some that even committed suicide after surviving cause they couldn't handle the trauma hurts

This song gave me "Jenny of the Oldstones" vibe. Soldiers before the battle. A masterpiece.
Finally! Iv'e been waiting patiently for this, one of my absolute favorite songs from anything, especially this movie. Perfectly sung and used! Sure puts you in a setting of calmness and stillness before a wave.
Absolutely! I was so transfixed at this moment I thought I'd cry.
During this scene, I personally felt overwhelming feelings of sorry and sadness for all Schofield went through. Hearing this song once again sent shivers down my time.
i have always had a fear of war, but this movie truly made me realize the horrors of it. it makes me sob thinking about all the young men who never got to see their loved ones again. all because some world leaders couldn’t fight their own battles. war can sometimes be necessary. but that doesn’t change the fact that millions of men are sent out to fight against their will. they don’t know if they will wake up tomorrow. they don’t know if they will see their wife, son, daughter, mother, father, or sibling. so many lives are unfairly taken and i’m so blessed that i haven’t had to experience the horrors of war. i don’t cry out of my own fear, but i cry for those who can’t. for those who’s lives have been cut short by their fellow man because another had told them to do so. war is unspeakable. war is horrifying. i wouldn’t wish it upon any of my enemies.
Used to sing this song back in middle school. This rendition is so beautiful. So glad they decided to use this song
This is one of the best movie's of 2020
of the decade
Stating anything very obvious is just attention seeking lol.
You're dumb to think nobody would know that lol.
It came out in 2019
Is from 2019 dude
Correction. It IS the best.
This scene sent chills down my whole spine
Just watched this movie last night and it's just a masterpiece. It felt like you were with them. Never seen a movie like it.
This was one of the most raw and moving movies I have ever seen. I watched it with my teen son and it tore my heart out because I thought of him going to war the entire time. I tear up just hearing this song.
1917 was just a stunning movie. The soundtrack made it so much more powerful. This song in particular was just incredible.
Oh my god My HEART!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I felt same for The First Time in The Cinema :'(
I will remember that film and this music for the rest of my life . it’s so touching .
Good damn, this is awesome. Gives me chills through my skin - in a good way. Part in the movie was something strong and emotional.
finally it has been found
Makes me ache with pain and anger for lost friends of war that iv never known. A true masterpiece of music and film. A rare thing for a piece of music to transport you to another place and time, but this..... this does just that and more.
It invokes very universal feelings of loss and longing for things we've lost and places/times we might have lived or have never known. Very haunting stuff.
The First World War had much death for nothing. Vauquois, Somme, Ypres, Verdun, Brusilov Offensive. So much death. We still feel the impact today of this war. Yet few remember this war. Those who know not the past are bound to repeat it. Men died in World War One for pieces of land nobody cared about. Even now, in the Middle East, it happens. We must not forget this war. Scofield was most likely killed by 1918.
It becomes more intense after watching They Shall Not Grow Old
I watched “They Shall Not Grow Old“ quite recently.
This movie was the best move I have ever seen
10 years from now, people will remember 1917 as one the best films made in the last decade (2010-2020)
I think it will be one of the best movies of this century like previous century's Schindler's list, Inglorious Bastard etc
Way Way overhyped
Yes! And nobody would even remember anything about the cunting virus or bacteria that robbed it of its glory!
It will be my top 5 films of the year
The "Saving Private Ryan" of our time.
Those damn onions...
FWIW...here's what I can say about this film...
I have never like war movies. I cannot think of a war movie I have ever liked. But after seeing 1917 in the theater, it felt like one of the most moving cinematic experiences of my movie-going life. It is that powerful.
fishbone3333 1917 is more than a War Movie, it’s not about flashy romanticism of war, it’s about the gritty reality of young men sent to die
The whole theater stood still during this scene. BRILLIANT
Man, this was such an amazing/emotional movie. I'm a grown ass man and this scene made me cry.
I have been waiting for the release of full version for AGES !!
Literally crying when hearing this
Saw this in the theater with my mate. To this day one of the best cinema experiences I’ve had. Sam Mendes is a master
This is one of the greatest WW1 films I've ever seen, and I love how it displays the realaties these men faced during this awful war.
One of the best, greatest movies I ever watched. This movie will always take a special place in my heart !
I never seen a comment section filled with heartful feedbacks. 👍
I interpret that scene like this: the soldiers sitting and listening to this represented the dead and dead yet to come from this war. Almost like Schofield stepped out of reality for a few minutes and went to a different place.
Finally made it to see 1917 in theaters today. Now this song has me weeping like a baby.
Poor Blake was just trying to get the man some water rest in peace
I cried in the cinema when this song started. So beautiful and fitting, like he's reached the gates
(even though its an American folk song, so maybe slight historical tick with that. But the whole film is fantastic!!!)
Maybe I'm wrong but I don't think it's that unlikely a Brit would have known it. The Americans entered the war in April of 1917 and there were plenty of US volunteers fighting beforehand, especially for the British and French flying corps so it's not unfeasible he would have known it. There were also Canadians fighting since the start of the war so the song could have been popular there and travelled over with their troops.
The song had been around prior to the American Civil War so I'd think our cousins across the pond would have known the song by 1917.

The song appears to be of Scots Irish origin. Originating in the Appalachian mountains among
settlers of British descent and making its way back over the Atlantic to British relatives sometime during the 50 years gap between the American Civil War and the Great War.
It originated around the time of the American civil war probably, so it easily could’ve traveled to England by ww1
The scene was just amazing. The song was waving in from far and Schofield was hell exhausted and finally took some rest.
The fact the movie was shot in only 2 shots, wow
Fan service at its best!! Love this😭😭❤❤🕊
This is by far my favourite movie. The filming was incredible, acting was too. I had my hands in my hair sobbing....
I wish I could see this movie for the first time again, it was an amazing experience
