@@Horchata44 It being a videogame is not an excuse. Jedi Academy is also a videogame but it didn't have spongy enemies, despite it being known for its difficulty. It's not that hard to understand...
There are different ways to improve the gameplay to prevent spongy enemies and balance everything out while retaining the fun mechanics. In Jedi Academy you were just as vulnerable as your enemies when it came how much health you had compared to them, and how much raw damage weapons do. But you still felt like a powerful Jedi if you knew how to use the tools at your disposal. It's called "skill", something that modern single player games don't seem to demand of the players anymore (funny that anyone would compare fallen order and survivor to souls like games when all it has in common is the basic ideas behind the combat mechanics...).
There are so many ways to make the game feel fun to play as well as making it challenging without making enemies feel spongy. For example, make it so that each saber stance has a different blocking capability and damage. The faster a stance is able to lay blows on your enemies, the less damage it does but the faster you should be capable of moving the blade to block attacks. Boom, now, as simple as that you have introduced style switching mechanics orders of magnitude more rewarding and deep than what Jedi survivor has...
Rather than artificially upping the difficulty by making enemies have more health, make it so that the player has to work harder to not get hit and to hit the enemies. It looks like that's what the game was going for with its attempt at a soulslike combat, but it clearly failed misserably at it when the only way to make each difficulty harder is by giving enemies more health.
That's what made the combat so interesting in Jedi Academy. When it came to defeating blaster users, it was easy to block the shots of a few enemies shooting at you at a time, but the more enemies are thrown at you, the more you need to actually learn how to properly block. In survivor all you have to do is press the block button and reflect back shots. Wow, such skill, so much fun! With a system like that, it makes sense why the only way to up the difficulty is to make enemies more spongy lol... As for light saber duels in Academy, if you have just as much health as your enemies, then it all comes down to how you block their swings, how you use your force powers and how many times you manage to poke them. In short, you don't depend on damaging a magic bar that makes your enemy stumble back so that you can lay a few hits on their spongy ass. You actually are moving a blade, and wherever it goes, it will either land and hurt them, or get blocked and give them an opening...
My point is that they knew how to balance a game 20 years ago. Why can't modern game devs do that?
There are infinitely many ways to balance a game without making enemies spongy. As a matter of fact, the games with the best balance and most challenging gameplay out there tend to allow the player to 1 shot enemies if they are skilled enough.

@@tiranito2834 "It's called "skill", something that modern single player games don't seem to demand of the players anymore " You just summed it up here. Skilled player are actually a very low percentage of the playerbase. Most people are casual players and don't want something taht challenging on "hard" and that is the reason why modern games would rather increase combat duration with healthpool rather than actual skill requirement.
Souls are an exception, not the rule. They are MEANT to be hard and when you buy a Soul game you know where it is going. Star Wars is meant for the bigger audience.
