Ahh that’s a shame. I’ve never been a pop fan (my favorite band is Propagandhi) but Kesha’s work is different.
To appreciate it, you really have to loosen up, let it wash over you and leave your ego at the door.
I can see you resisting for whatever reason. Maybe it’s because there’s another guy in the room and a bunch of people waiting for your reaction. It’s a style of music that’s purposely unserious and should be listened to without an audience and a spotlight on you. Dancing your ass off in a dark dive bar after too many tequila shots. Much like in punk music you can stand on the sideline annoyed that it’s too loud and aggressive or you can dive in the mosh pit and skank into your fellow trashbags
A professional reviewer must need to pull it apart but it must be hard never being able to appreciate a style of music because of your job. It’s also a hindrance in that regard. It’s not a matter of personal preference. The song has elements that are completely new. I’ve never heard a mariachi club banger with such interesting drops.
You’ve only focussed on a few completely camp elements that tie the song together to change the entire tone and it seems as though you’d prefer it if kesha showed less versatility. Knowing what she’s capable of after rainbow and gag order, I would have hoped you’d come into this review with enough faith that you could appreciate a few more layers.
There are elements that I disliked but ultimately after 2:30 my head was spinning from the arrangement and production. Seemed like you were a bit too stiff to discern those elements my man.
Another plus is that this is SO MUCH BETTER that Woman's World by Katy Perry.
Propagandhi may be one of the best bands ever and unfortunately this song lacks what they are so good at. Substance and meaning. This isnt very good lyricly or musically. 99% of the people seeing this video probably have no idea who Propagandhi is but I was happy to see someone mention them.

I used to rock up to school in a heavily Christian suburb pumping “F^ck Religion.” My brother taught me how to play most of the songs from “How to Clean Everything” on my cheap nylon acoustic, and the first song I ever learned was “Left and Leaving” by The Weakerthans.
I used to hate Kesha’s music/image and thought her message was the opposite of bands like Propagandhi, but I’ve never eaten my words so hard. That was the stupidest assumption I’ve ever made about a musician!
This song is far more complex lyrically and sonically, but I’d have to message you with an essay on why your reaction is exactly how you’re supposed to be feeling!
On Propagandhi, they’re fairly similar in values. Kesha’s out there speaking at PETA fundraisers, fighting for gay rights, speaking out on abortion laws, and writing and releasing music about gun control in America. What separates them is that Kesha’s able to shift from vulnerable introspective ballads to Bob Dylan covers.
Propagandhi have the talent to make themselves radio-playable to spread their message, but they’re too proud to lower themselves to being liked by the people whose minds they want to change. So they’re basically screaming at people who agree with them hoping that will cause charge 🤷🏼♂️
To make an impactful difference, they’d have to want to convey their message to the masses by appealing to the lowest common denominator with more popular music. It’s a catch-22. I love them, but they’re actively trying to go unnoticed out of pride while screaming about their cause not having enough recognition.
“Joyride” is a hard listen for a Propagandhi fan, but it’s far more complex and nuanced than it appears. Substance and meaning are context based as this isn’t a stand-alone pop song. This is a song about freedom from her

What I mean about context is that the very last song on her last album was a farewell to the psychopath who’d strangled her for years.
If you wanna understand the context, listen to that last song (“Happy”) from her Gag Order album, then play “Joyride” right after, you’ll see why it’s so cathartic. It’s a f^ck you and a carefree celebration of having creative freedom again.
The composition is excellent as a club banger. It has some highly advanced production techniques like layered vocals, intricate beat patterns atmospheric effects and unexpected drops and reprises. There’s so much depth and dimension to it. She’s not demanding people take this particular song seriously and your reaction is exactly how you’re supposed to feel.
It’s bratty and obnoxious and sounds basic until it doesn’t. After everything that’s happened to Kesha this feels like a massive exhale in the form of a disjointed, chaotic colourful feverdream.
Even with the bratty lyrics, it’s cohesive and purposeful. The music and production build during the intro, chorus and bridge. The tension mirrors the journey of the lyrics and it’s an experimental mix of instruments and sounds. It’s risky for a pop song because it’s not formulaic and that can make people feel uncomfortable. Like it’s not how it should be?
I think we can expect to hear some songs with deeper messages in other tracks and albums ahead, but this one’s to be appreciated for its reckless abandon. 🎉

This song is unhinged and over-the-top and yes the lyrics are cringe, but it’s also so addictive. I’ve heard this out at the bars in LA multiple times now and it’s been such a crowd pleaser!!

I think the verse lyrics are where the disconnect is at, they make sense for the song but I understand why it rubs the wrong way and sounds a little lazy. However it's a short song and for what it is it is still extremely catchy. Joyride is the brazen, girl's night-ish redux of Boots & Boys from Animal.

I think its a fun goofy track. It is like a bad song BUT, it is one of the best bad songs ever
I'm a HUGE Kesha fan and while it's grown on me a bit... I definitely think it's NOT IT. I'm happy for her that she seems to be connecting with a new generation of listeners, but I hope this isn't an indication of all her music going forward.
She has so much more to offer than a 2 1/2 minute song that honestly says little to nothing.
Fun music is great... But if that's all it has to offer it has a very short shelf life, IMHO 🤷♀️
