  • Releasing my red tailed hawk back to the wild. I'm very proud of what we were able to accomplish. Thank you Ben Woodruff for your help.

    Such an incredible bird! We were blessed to have her in our lives for the 2020 to 2021 falconry season. She will be greatly missed, but she is going to be awesome out there in the wild.

    Always a hard but rewarding day. I was lucky and my first kestrel hung around my neighborhood for several months after release. Within 20 minutes of being released I watched her take a mouse and carry it back up to the wire and eat it. It was bittersweet but great to see her do well after release.

    You will feel even better about your decision to release her when you see a male sitting next to her on a pole. Nice work with this gorgeous bird.

      I really hope I can see that someday. Maybe next season. I do occasionally see her in the area.

    Sure hope the rabbits come back soon. It's been pretty rough finding rabbits here in California, too. Such a shame, would have liked to see you two flying again next season. Hard to let something like that go though, isn't it? Been there, done that - as the saying goes. Getting ready to do it very shorty. On exam the night before release, I found some nasty lacerations on the bottoms of her feet, so a trip to the vet and lots of washing, and a course of antibiotics. Really have no idea what happened, but we are dealing with it. Soon as they are healed up, off she goes. Thinking I may try a family bird Kestrel this year. Ben's kinda inspired that, so.. thanks to your mentor! You going goshawk?? All the best!

      We will see if a goshawk is going to work this season. It’s never a guarantee until our can get the bird hunting. My plan is to have 2 different birds so I can fly more often.

    Wow, that's got to be tough. You did right by her though. Is the disease out there affecting jacks and cottontails? *edit - looked it up...both! That sucks.

    in falconry you need to free every bird once a set amount of time is passed, or did you free the bird because of lack of fresh food, or again because it was like a program to repopulate an area? sorry i'm new to the channel i don't really know much about this stuff

    • @Toothandtalon
      @Toothandtalon  3 года назад +4

      I’m allowed to keep any wild bird for as long as I want. My decision to release her how to do with the rabbit population. I wouldn’t be able to provide her with the opportunity to hunt that she would need to stay happy.

      No it’s like trimming your fingernails. He was making sure her beak wasn’t overgrown for when she was released

      It's just to make sure her beak won't overgrow when she's released. It doesn't hurt her
