Please do Adult Aloy as well. Playing through HFW right now, and a lot of quirks and behavior patterns she has in the first game start getting called out in the second, and they really show how broken she is as a result of being motherless and an outcast for so much of her life.

i really want to hear her talk about all threes (aloy, elizabeth, bata) one glaring flaw on their almost spotless record (except for bata her track sheet isnt spotless). the inability and/or lack of desire to ask for help of any kind. excluding bata who was mind broken so...ya she gives up if she cant do it herself (its reversed in her case). aloy and elizabith will literly fight the world before asking for help. while the help they get come to them and go "im not leaving" because she would try pushing them away if their not steadfast. this flaw is so consistent and oparent its pointed out by everyone game especially during the second and most defiantly third game (thou its not out yet, the thirds going to be an alliance builder, aloys actualy going to need to ask for help) missions side or main missions.
character wise this makes sense because they kinda go off the moto of 'the smarter you are the more lonely you are' and they are vary, vary smart. im talking iq atleast in the 140-190 iq range as they are all genuises of the highest order,

There’s a lot more you can get into with Horizon, the opening is of course the densest in its storytelling, because it’s that 30-60 minutes where the game has to make you care about Aloy as a protagonist (which it does splendidly), but the rest of her journey in this game is also incredibly emotional and layered. As an adult she’s prepared and has to fight to find meaning and purpose, to move beyond this need for approval and find her self worth less in what people think of her, but in how her actions make her think about herself. In learning this lesson and finding this thing to fight for, that lets her find meaning and self-worth from within, doesn’t just earn her the tribe’s approval, but the approval and admiration of the whole world around her, going from a lonely, motherless outcast to the savior of the whole world, not just in deed, but in reputation.
And then how this all ties into the overall theme of religion and tribalism going on in Horizon, with this struggle Aloy has being reflected at a communal level. *Chef’s kiss* Amazing world crafted by Guerilla and one of the most inspirational video game heroes.

I love the rock throw for a different reason: it's not backing down completely and it's not choosing to be as bad as the bully, who went as far as to physically hurt her - it's the middle ground of: "I will not hurt you, but don't give me a reason to because I could."
Like taking "I am as strong as you." and combining it with "I will not be as aggressive/petty as you." - assertive without being damaging and it takes the high ground so to speak.

I chose the compassionate option during my playthrough because if you're already an outcast, letting it lead you to anger and retaliation just seems like it's going to poison you in the long run, plus I prefer compassion in my hero's anyway.
Great analysis as always, I hadn't really clocked Rost realising he's teaching Aloy to leave him until much later when he pretty much says it and while you didn't cover adult Aloy much (yes, the aging up Combat roll is an awesome moment) the VA, Ashley Burch, manages to sound both compassionate and 110% done with everyone's bullshit for much of the game. Georgia,
No one online is doing this but you.
Originally I believed channels like "Cinema Therapy" couldn't be beat since they were approaching popular movies in order to bridge teaching.
Never once have I come across a therapist conveying lessons through video games culture.
    This is second to none.
I actually believe you may be setting a humankind standard for new developing ways to teach and bridge non-traditional knowledge.
Being so concerned with information, I don't believe Ive come across this particular niche. You would both have to be a professional therapist, engagement for content creation, AND a stellar gamer.
These are up-to-date games. Very up-to-date.
This is what trail blazing looks like.
I myself do it in my field and you are blazing quite the path yourself.
I LOVE how tech, timing, and innovation combine in harmony to deliver this new age schooling. Information(for the most part) is not new or old, yet, the modes in which we deliver them are.
Georgia, this channel is innovation nation #1
    I'm here, loyal.

Please, take care of yourself and have a wonderful week ahead.

    Oh wow!
I've been waiting for this for a long time, thank you.
What a beautiful take of Rost's/Aloy's father-daughter relationship and how that shaped who she grew up to be.
I would really love if you do more analysis of Aloy, her journey and relationship with some of the characters in Horizon series.
I think the way the writers handled Aloy was masterful, from having Rost as a father figure to how being an outcast and “motherless” affected her through her entire journey, search for meaning and belonging, and how that juxtapose with the truths she uncovered along the way, and how she handled them.
Also, in Forbidden West, there are a few characters worth analyzing their impacts on Aloy’s growth, like Varl for example, he handled Aloy with as much finesse as Rost did, but in Varl’s case, as a friend. The rest of the characters, I’ll restrain myself from mentioning to not spoil the story to those who haven’t yet finished the main quest. But there's really good material here to analyze, like what variables can contribute to make people be who they are, and how relationships with others and their influences can make a huge difference.
I noticed how you almost teared up a bit there when talking about Rost; there's a scene in Forbidden West, I'm sure it'll get you ;)

One of the things that has stood out to me, having played this, and also having watched a handful of playthroughs, is that most of the decisions I’ve seen after Aloy gets hit with the rock have been to knock the rock from Bast’s hand.
It is almost as though they want her to have some satisfaction, but not at the cost of being a decent person.
One person chose to throw the rock at his head, and Rost shoots the rock out of the air with an arrow.

When you talked about the importance of Rost trusting Aloy, of his calm voice and how we set people up to fail when we try to teach them skills out of a state of stress or putting too much pressure on them that really hit home on my struggles with getting training in new jobs from stressed impatient people who didn't understand that I learn things differently from them. Add to that all the pressure I put on myself and both have made starting new jobs so much more difficult and stressful for me.

  • @SwordTune

Firstly, I would DEFINITELY watch a Rost vs Kratos video. Secondly, I think that point absolutely hits the nail on the head for what both characters need to be for their stories. Kratos is supposed to be bad at parenting, he has no idea how to do it, and that's his arc. Rost, as great as he is, is like a pawn in terms of storytelling. He's there to set up the pieces down the line, namely Aloy, and is sacrificed for it. He needs to be that well-adjusted parent in order to pull it off.

I never want to be a parent nor am I able to handle a human child, but I appreciate others handling their children and their limits and abilities correctly.
It’s a job you aren’t supposed to be paid for, but a job that is so important to not only the community, but the child themselves.
I ain’t a kid person, but I’m glad to see people actually treat their children with respect, love, and trust, but also discipline and important lessons.

Now I'd like to see your reaction to Nil. His deadpan sociopathy, while yes, it would be scary in real life, is hilarious in-game and like Showtime's Dexter he at least puts it to a (relatively) good use-although his reasons for keeping to the good side are selfish of course.
Regarding Rost saying, "Now is not the time," you are of course correct in a real-world scenario, but this is a place where the writer's need to keep secrets from the player is in conflict with what I believe Rost as portrayed would actually say, and of course the storyteller's need wins out. 🙂

I chose to knock the rock out of his hand. 😄 I participated in a discussion when someone commented on Aloy's behaviour and treatment in Forbidden West towards those people she had come to know in HZD. I felt that having grown up in that kind of environment and treatment she had received for 18 years, is not going to make her more thoughtful, open, sociable and ready to accept that she's not alone even though they had aided her in the fight. I understood her aloofness and reticence. It would take time for her to warm up to people and as the story in Forbidden West unfolded, I was glad to see she does mellow.

In Forbidden West, it was only after Aloy had a fevered vision of Rost, that she started to let people follow her. I suppose it took longer for her but she eventually started to let people chart their own paths, and instead of trying to stop them, she accepted that she couldn’t and instead decided to help guide them as best she could so that they might survive.
I have no clue if that was deliberate but I like to think it is.

I can't wait til you play Forbidden West, they really explore the damage her being an outcast and the positive things her upbringing did and tries to weave it together in amazing ways.
They don't take away what happened to her. They have her learn and grow from it, even if it still deeply effects her. They made the character deeper, without taking away her struggles.

As one that has channel dedicated to Horizon Zero Dawn and attracted to psychology, i find your analysis very accurate. Aloy as a character is always more inquisitive then afraid, which absolutely makes everything in this game so approachable, and let the story progress by the hands of the player.
Also growing as an outcast, for a child can be rewarding later on, no fear from denial as she already got used to it, and follow only her missions in life, whatever it takes!

For the record I would love that hypothetical Rost v Kratos video. I loved the old God of War games so seeing him have no idea what he was doing at first, but still grow a lot as a father was great. It seemed a natural growth from his connection to Pandora in the previous game to go off and start a family.

  • @FlintlockFreddy

As always I admire your analysis.
It's always amazing to see how much effort is put into some animations and it does not lessen the magic for me. On the contrary as someone who struggles with emotions myself it actually helps me a lot. I think it's also a great Idea to make her education also the tutorial for the player so it feels like we are learning things as she learns them. It prevents her from becoming a Mary-Sue, because we were there with her and we learn first hand what her motivation is and why she tries so hard and become that really badass character.
Regarding the rock decision: I really loved that Idea and how it introduces a kind of moral compass and it's not just black and white.
I decided to just drop the rock. I like the idea that she just caught the rock and showed him that he can't hurt her and also that she is above such petty things. Also if I remember correctly there is a scene later in the game where she meets that by again and I think he even asks her why she did as the player decided.
Also I love your little cosplays and Aloy is just a perfect match for you, most likely because of the hair.

I love watching your videos and the way you analyzed young Aloy was pretty amazing. I hope you continued playing through the game, it’s a lot of fun and the story line is pretty intriguing. If you finished the game I’d suggest giving the prequel a try, Horizon Forbidden West. Again, an amazing story line and way more physical and emotional challenges along the way throughout the game. This was me and my dad from the ages of 3 to 10, he never was much good at compassion, but great with a first aid kit. Considering he was a former Uruguayan revolutionary and his father passed when he was 12, his parenting style makes some sense, but it did kinda leave me lacking in compassion as well. Conversely, he made me hypercapable, and able to stand behind my decisions. It is rather nice to be Johnny on the spot, and very validating that your friends call you for help for just about anything from moving to recovering their crashed Mac. Detail being that he didn't teach me many social skills, or maybe I'm on the spectrum, fact of the matter is that I went for high stats across the board completely blowing by charisma in the process. Thankfully, that's come with age and experience, and a fair bit of bumping my head against walls on account of being too trusting. And I do remember reading that neurodivergent people tend to be more trusting and good natured.

I think it's extremely important to see the montages. Nothing breaks my sense of immersion more than having a story introduce a clear novice (if even that) that somehow is instantly as good if not better than masters. That just doesn't happen. Always feels jarring when I see it happen. Not to beat a dead horse but, I think a great example is Rey vs Luke in The Last Jedi. Rey beating Luke Skywalker in a duel (idc that he had a stick) was just... ridiculous to me and my mind actively rejected it as I watched it.
