- Let's do the Top Gun Anthem intro. A 5 minute tutorial. Roland TR-808, Juno-106, Yamaha TX802, QX3 sequencer. Tom Cruise, Harold Faltermeyer, 1986 and a MIDI live performance.
This is not meant to be a carbon copy remake, just a quick inspirational video.

Harold Faltermeyer used a Yamaha QX1 sequencer. Mine refused to work properly when I set it up, so instead I went for the QX3, which is more advanced anyways, but does not look as cool.
Faltermeyer also used a Yamaha TX816 (in fact he used 2 of them) for a monster tubular bell sound, detuned and stacked. My 816 has a wonky power supply at the moment so I had to settle for the TX802 instead, with some stacked and detuned tubular bells. Sounds fat enough (more adjectives).
I guess Faltermeyer used a Roland Jupiter-8 for the bass and maybe even the strings. I set up the Juno-106 with a chorused bass and I used the TAL-sampler with a JX-3P string sound.
I did not study the original very much for this, it was all done based off the intro in Maverick by ear so it will probably be a little off here and there. No biggie.

Never watched the movie, but that bell sound still hits all my nostalgia buttons at once.
Great movie and great score and great songs like Danger Zone , and Take My Breath Away. The bass line on Take mt breath has that European sound that Yngwie Malmsteen uses on some of his ballads, maybe its Bach influenced im not sure, but its cool :)
Always get the chills when I hear this. Imo it sounds enormusly better with Dm and not F.
Harold ist ein Genie! Thanks for sharing. Those effects are the main driving force.
I bought my first Pioneer Home theater amp because of this Anthem, love it!
It sounds spot on! Those Tubular bells sound very faithfull to the original. I’ve read once that Harold Faltermeyer layered 16 Tubular bell presets to achieve this. It’s one of those sounds that made me an FM synth aficionado.
Cheers! I go through all that in the video description. ;-)
He used 2 DX7s and the TX816 the bass I think was the Minimoog which is what I used the first set of pads are also from the DX7 which is what I also used and then alternated the pads and filters with sounds from a Juno 60 and Jupiter 8.
I also used the TR 808 and delay for the percussion so it’s more or less the same set up however I played the chords slightly different however as you’ve stated it’s just a rough note guide not 1.1 comparison
I Still get great vibes every time I listen to this sound. A Superb video perfectly executed
Cheers!
Well done! When I saw Maverick the first time that epic intro took me for a ride.
Cheers!
Every time I watch you it makes me want to pull out my MMT8-8. I really wish I could afford more stuff. Thanx
Cheers!
Last night I was watching the movie, this is magical... greetings Espen from Argentina
Cheers!
You got the bell sound eerily close for a 'not to be taken seriously' version. The bells hit hard while remaining soft and soulful... that sound plays with your emotions as soon as you hear it. I wanted more 😀. I did Danger Zone a few weeks ago on my channel, but the guitars didn't quite come out how I wanted them to on the keyboard.... but the whole Top Gun soundtrack is worthy of covering... and with the combined talents of Giorgio Moroder and Harold Faltermeyer on the job, its an under appreciated gem from the 80s.. I miss the 80s 🥲... can we go back please?
Great video! This gives me motivation to fix my QX1s and cover bits of the Top Gun score
Cheers!
Pretty spot on to me, love to hear a bit more
Thanks! If I did more I would have gotten on the bad side of the algorithm. ;-)
I remember buying the Top Gun OST when it was released, cost 20 bux, and back then when I was being paid 180 a week, I considered a lot of money.
So what is my point?
The opening wasn't even on the CD LOL.
That's why I originally bought it.
Yours is better, cause it's freeeeee!!!
Cheers!
wow, That ticked all my tubular bells. very nice sound from your equipment Esben, this soundtrack is pure magic and it sounds spot on to me :)
Thanks!
But Espen 'The eighties' will never die... And You ARE the Eighties. all the best man.
Many thanks!
Just picked up a dmp11 due to inspiration from you. Running a tx802, tg77, and integra7 through it. Didn't realize how badly I needed it until I saw your dmp7. Thanks a lot! 🙄
Cheers!
OK So this needs a part 2 enough said ! love this .
Cheers!
Wow, very good!!like that pad/string sound..
Thanks!
Was it the dx7 making that chime? Sorry Yamaha module ! Thought so😊
I haven't heard the original in a while, but without checking that first, it sounded damn spot on in my ears! Time to see if Cruise is up to no good I presume! ;)
Thanks man! If nothing else, Mr. Cruise is dedicated to his art.
Even if you weren't going for 100% accuracy, you got very very close. Nice 😊
Cheers!
Great anthem and a really good video. I love that bell sound on my DX7. However the best thing for me is the Scritti Politti Provision album cover on the wall. Thank you for this video.
Cheers!
Beautiful and very well-done intro Espen!
Thanks!
Great Work...Thank you for sharing with us
Cheers!
Mmm, ear candy 🙂
Beautiful! TR808 rules!
Cheers!
Thanks for qualifying and setting expectations. "Don't take this too seriously... I didn't pay too much attention to the original.. and here is where the magic happens." 😂
:P
Sounds pretty much spot on, not exactly of course, but instantly reminds me of the opening of the film
The original movie had good music, fighter jets and Kelly McGilles… I saw the new movie and anjoyed it: it’s good too. Listening to you building up the anthem brought me back memories of the eighties Top Gun movie… have to watch it again 👍😁 Thanks Espen!
Cheers!
My first time with 808 was last night through Rolandcloud 😁
I love the movies !! And the Anthem played over by Steve Stevens on Guitar !! Your Intro sounds more than in the ball parc....Great Espen!!!! Would like to hear the whole song from You ;-)
Thanks! I think this is enough for me at this point. Not much to gain by doing more on this really. ;-)
Cool!
Thank you, Espen ! Great TR 808 programming ;)
Would you be able to share the score for the drum ? My son just received a TR6S for Xmas and we're learning how to program it : we already spent some time pausing and rewinding your video to understand how you're doing it...
Happy New Year !
Thanks! This was all done by ear. I have no score to share as such. I don't even have the pattern inside the 808 any more either. Cheers :)
Cheers! 🥂
What spectrum analyzer is that in the background? Thank you. Really enjoyed it.
A cheap one Fun Generation RTA-31. Cheers
Espen, that gives me goose bumps... and I'm not talking about Maverick's partner. What delay and reverb did you use?
Thanks! This is just a quick and dirty setup so I only used ValHalla VintageVerb and a Waves delay plugin on the drums.
Oh man, Espan please do Live To Tell from At Close Range soundtrack
I don't do requests, sorry. ;-)
Pure bliss.
Oh! Its so cool !
Cheers!
what kind of dist guitar did you recoment i learn me this song by listen to it when it relsesd in 80-90ies but i have never get the rigt lead guitar ;D
I don't answer questions in regard to what guitar someone should get. ;-) That's not my area of expertise.
Great Espen! Please do more 80s movie music. Could be a cool series. What delay/reverb is used on the drums? Cheers
Thanks! I use a combo of Valhalla VintageVerb and Specular Tempus here.
Epic, as always 👍
Cheers!
Could we possibly get the full version of the anthem played out like that? ❤
Just watch my video from my latest live gig. We play it full on there. ;-)
dont forget to add in the Stevie Stevens :)
Would have been great. :P
Great video, as always :)
What is the brand/model of the spectrum analyzer in the rack?
It's a cheap one, from Thomann. Can't remember the name.
@@EspenKraft OK, thanks. I'll try to find it. I do know there are some chepa ones around at Aliexpress and similar sites.
@@EspenKraft probably the Fun Generation RTA-31 I suppose.
That's it!
bells are spot on. I think drums on the original are good ol' Linndrum? not sure
No, the original is TR-808, that's a fact.
now i asking what keyboard sound you use for lead i guess normal they play on a real guitar but asking about what kind of lead guitar on keyboards
I rarely do that. If I do it's a total experiment and I can use whatever and run it through some effects and mess around until I find something I like.
And they cut out the modal change in the chords (it's not as good)
well, why did you not showed how the drumset was created? Or is this a standard rythm set?
It is exactly what I show man. I program the TR-808 to do the drums.
do you like the new version? (Maverick)
I loved it!
@@EspenKraft Great tribute to the original version. I always loved HF work for 80´s soundtracks and the Steve Stevens solo!
Thanks! I always liked the version without the guitar solo more. :P Love HF too.
Man, wish you hadn't talked over that bell sample. Can't find it anywhere lol
A classic FM tubular bell can be found in every DX synth. ;-)
❤️❤️❤️
i dont suppose u have the midi tracks do u??
I never share midi files. ;-)
👍
marvelous as always Kraft!
Cheers!
