    This was such a fun day. I didn't show it, but broke my hand here and was 5 weeks in a cast afterwards. Was it worthwhile? Heck, yeah!
    You will notice some issues because of the (low on the horizon) sun, creating bright spots and shadows in the video. I don't know how to avoid that other than pick a different time of day.

      Not a thing wrong with this video. Anyway most of us Love the sun, shadows, bright spots, never mind. : ) I've always wondered why they named it apatite? Hungry rock? If you, with all your knowledge has a difficult time getting whole, large crystals, how the heck can it be done? Guess that is why they are valuable. I 'm thinkin' the little disc like pieces would be beautiful jewelry, but is it strong enough or is there something to coat them with to strengthen them? Love the silly singin'.My Mother and her parents were fantastic miners, mining from Oklahoma down through to California and over through Utah, Arizona and Nevada, having several mining claims. So I couldn't avoid being a rockhound, eh? Thanks for teaching us.

    New subscriber. You never popped up in my feed before. I loved how forlorn you seemed at first and then it turned into gleeful chuckles. Too bad you couldn’t get those others out, but you did pretty well, all things considered! “Sage green” is my favorite color. Wish I could do this but been recovering from five surgeries (which is how I started watching these videos) over the last seven years and have four more coming up so it’ll be a while if ever. A small to medium piece polished would make such a pretty pendant! Do you sell polished pieces? I never heard of apatite before so I looked it up - just learning. Comes in a lot of colors I see but I love the green! So now you have a new subscriber. Good luck on your next outing! - Kat

      I am pretty sure most active quarries won't let you in unless you are on a club field trip that was arranged prior. Clubs have insurance, liability wavers, first aid and monitor the people for safety.

    What do unbroken ends of the crystals look like? Are they pyramidal or flat? Fun video!

    • @TheFaderland

      @Michigan Rocks, crystal system = hexagonal. It depends at what end you look!

    • @MichiganRocks
      @MichiganRocks 3 года назад

      @@TheFaderland I appreciate you trying to help, but I still don't know what the ends look like. I see that the crystal is hexagonal. I don't know if the ends naturally come to a point or if the end is a flat plane perpendicular to the sides.
      When you say, "It depends on which end you look at", are you saying that one end is flat and the other comes to a point?

      @@MichiganRocks A perfect Apatite crystal is hexagonal with pyramidal ends.
      It must grow as a "free float". Not happen at this location and extreme rare worldwide. Any crystal starts with a "seed".
      Therefor the base can have any shape. How, when and why they build a terminated pyramid must a mineralogist explain.

    I wish you could just toss that pink calcite to me. How do i tell the difference between calcite and white quartz? I wish I could shadow you for a month. Every time I think I understand or recognize a rock-I realize I know jack, heck less than jack. What was that black rock you were refering to along with the appatite and calcite? And you have a new dog? You probably wont get around to seeing this for months. But I thank you so dearly-just another crazy rock lover (not my fault-born that way- lol)

    • @meMiner
      @meMiner  3 года назад

      Calcite is softer and will scratch with a knife. Also, it will bubble (etch) in muriatic acid, whereas quartz is unaffected. The usual three black rocks in this area are biotite mica (which can usually be Identified by its crystal shape or more importantly stacked like paper), titanite (which is lustrous and wedge shaped on unbroken edges) and most common is Amphibole (AKA Fluoro-richterite). The crystals and clusters of amphibole are interesting but it is relatively soft and not as shiny as titanite.

    I would have watched this at the time it was released but I was watching dirty movies, not your cheap rubbish, professionally made and in the best possible taste and I just could not stop mid way through so I waited until I had finished, really good films, you could say if you have seen one you have seen them all, but not these, Dirty Dancing and Dirty Harry, both great films.
    Uh, so what did you think I was talking about?
    Great finds once again Greig, The chances are the apatite will be broken before it's liberated, that's just just how it is Unfortunately.
    How about you take some diluted vinegar and some rags next time, you can keep soaking the rag and expose the crystals, just a thought being as the calcite is full of them.
    That's my kind of thing with the pole and hammer, I would love being there with you two, Daisy looked very chilled out this time.
    For anyone who is interested you can buy apatite in several colours and types, I looked on the website crystalage dot something, they have a good selection with some nice prices.
    Thanks Greig and Daisy.

      Ahh, so you like watching dirty movies too.
      Question,
      Calcite is the host rock of the apatite, so I assume that when you found the initial load in the soil, that was once calcite, hence the reason there were so many in one small area, that would make sense if it is the case.
      So if you camp out there for a few thousand years you could pick up the remaining apatite.

    OK so how about sharing the gems. Need Apatite and some radioactive pink Cobalt samples. Got any chunky Garnets ?

    • @meMiner
      @meMiner  3 года назад

      The cobalt isn't radioactive. It is only pink on the outside (oxidation). The radioactives were all black minerals and a bad idea to mail any cross border. I have black or red garnet but none are large. I had some large garnet somewhere but intend to go back to the site to collect more next summer.
