I am riding two wheels since 1955 and applying everything written on the book of Motorcycle Roadcraft, published by RoSPA (Royal Society of Prevention of Accident, Rider’s Handbook) and following your videos on youtube with pleasure like assurance of everything I learned is true in practice. Thanks for that.
I watched a lot of Trail braking videos but, most of them did not explained the throttle while we use that technic.
I notice on this video that my practice (keeping the throttle on, not zero) is right. It actually the matter of weight and traction on rear wheel.
Thanks again.
Ps: I wish I met with you in person for a chat
It really helps visually that you have the throttle marked. Rode on and off (mostly off) for 28 years. Never heard of trail braking. On a blind curve, I would always slow way down before entering a curve. It normally was slower than needed but it felt safe. After practicing this technique, I feel like I could safely approach unknown curves with a little more speed and still be safe. Thanks for doing what you do.
trial braking is a very important skill on a motorcycle and a car as well. I think every driver would have to master it
Absolutely love it! You're killing it! Saw a different channel using this type of format and was going to ask you to do the same......but I thought it might aggravate you because you do have basically the same information out there a hundred different ways. But I really do love this one in particular!!!!! Really really helpful! Thank you

I'm no expert, I only rode 600 km on my first bike last season after my course here in Quebec, Canada. They told us to never use brake while cornering, that we need to get the bike straight first because it could lead to lose of control. I think I'll check for some kind of Master course here near me with someone to teach me those things that you do. Videos are nice but being teach in person would be better. Thank you for all your videos, really appreciated.
The beginner course you took is 8th grade basic information, this is way above it. Much more to learn. The instructors should have said, “ in this class for all theses reasons, we won’t be braking in a curve, just know you can but that’s a higher level course.”
Salut @DGBTech! Indeed what is taught in Quebec is equivalent to the MSF's Slow, Look, Press and Roll method. This assumes you are riding well within the posted speed limit, including the reduced limit inside the curve, so that you don't have to continue braking once the turn is initiated. There are pros and cons to this method. You are expected to slow down so much that you only need maintenance throttle while inside the curve. I think it is because it's assumed that beginners don't have the dexterity and experience to apply trail breaking properly. I took my class 2 years ago and 30000km later, I'm just beginning to master this technique. Look at videos from Motojitsu, Canyon Chasers, and enroll at Yamaha's Champ U Core Rinding web class, this is a life changer: ridelikeachampion.com/courses-page/
@@MotoJitsu I have been driving a Mustang 2018 on track days and the technique to get it to turn in is trail braking. This way I could keep up with the 3 times as expensive Porsche 911s. If you don’t the Mustang will understeer, same as when you don’t trail brake a bike. I sold the Mustang and is kind of new to motorcycling and the similarities with track driving a car is amazing, even if there are differences. I have great help with your videos, to drive better and safer. Thanks a lot!.
There comes a point, I remembered from learning to ride my GS, when throttle control requires very little movement and maintaining relaxation. You pick up speed faster than you think! Great Video!
Thanks for watching & commenting! ❤️MotoJitsu.com for my app, books, merch, discounts, etc. 👍🏼
Exactly what was needed! Why didn’t someone do this long ago? You should start a series using split videos for every aspect of motorcycle handling. I could have used this when I started riding. Great job!!
That was by far one of the best views of the proper trail-braking technique. Been doing that for some time as instructed by some very good instructors that I've had. Keep up the good work!
thanks!

Subbed! Wow. I was such a wreckless and ignorant rider in my youth. So wish I had all this knowledge back then. At 62 thinking about getting a smaller bike just to put around on, maybe a dual sport. In my first 15 years of riding I didn't even know what counter-steering was; discovered it by accident. I didn't stop me from being a crazy maniac though on a 900rr.
This makes me feel a lot better about my grip and trail braking technique. I have had people tell me I'm doing it wrong, but I basically cover my brakes and trail brake like you do, and you seem to be much more knowledgeable than most.
:)
Thanks for watching & commenting! ❤️MotoJitsu.com for my app, books, merch, discounts, etc. 👍🏼
Excellent video demo of trail braking. This clearly shows it without all the explanation. So, you slightly pull in the front brake lever before entering the corner and then release it as you corner. My problem is just learning how much front brake to apply before entering the corner so that I don't brake almost completely before it but also not brake too little so that I cross the center line. I guess it just take practice. I live in Miami where we don't even have curvy streets or roads; all of them are in a grid.
Not sure why yt recommended this to me but I would like to say, if you read the road correctly and know your limits then there is no need for that brake, riding in that manner means you haven't adopted to the road conditions
Or you just hate brake pads with a passion
This is the most explanatory trail braking video. Without any talking whole world could understand “Trail Braking”.
Thank you so much!!

Saying something is helpful but seeing your throttle hand and viewing the road position at the same time is better. It was so effective that I almost felt the forces around the curves. Excellent.
Wow; fantastic video! I've been trying and trying to understand trail braking, and what all the fuss is about. After watching this video I finally know the answer: that's the way I naturally ride, and have for years!! Anyway, your video is a great demo of what trail braking is -- as opposed to trying to explain it. Thanks.
Классная демонстрация! Прямо видно, как мотик распрямляется при открытии газа! И так же с тормозом!
Wonderful denonstration! I was very impressed! Greetings from snowy Russia!

Damn! That's a very good demonstration but the funny thing is I've been doing this from the time i learned driving till now unconsciously thinking everyone knows about this and i didn't know it was a thing until now and yes it takes your handling to another level you'll be very confident around corners.
I am a new rider and haven't tried this technique yet, but B-Triple T makes sense to me in theory! Now its cold up in the northern east coast and cant really go riding, however, I will be following MotoJitsu's instructions. This guy just makes sense to me except for the times he looses the steering of his mouth ( because his speech accelerates) and start blabbering and going around the circles at times. I know its part of the drill, trying to provide best understanding. Thanks for the videos and I also got your book.
wont it make the breakpad and disk wornout too soon?? (im a beginner)
They're meant to wear out, and they're cheap
Hi Greg! There is one thing that is not clear to me in relation to trail braking: what should I do with the throttle while braking, should I close it completely or should I keep it in neutral at the same time that I am braking? Thanks in advance! By the way, your videos are of great value for me who I consider myself a beginner.
There is no need to give the bike gas when you brake. In fact, the engine will help you brake if you close the throttle completely. But once you get into the corner and stop braking, then you should give the bike just a little bit of gas so the engine doesnt slow you down more than you need. Kind of a late response, I know, but I hope it helps anyway
@@d3t3ktiv Thanks a lot. It has been very helpful.
Skilful, smooth and machine in tune with road twists. That is the joy of motorcycle riding. Basic motorcycle course instructed to slow before the curves and gently power thru curves. Cover that brake. and be careful of slippery, loose surfaces with that powerful motor.
Great review video for us riders to improve. Thanks pal !

Newbie here.
You keep accelerating and decelerating while trail braking. Would maintain an average steady speed be more stable and smoother?
Wow this is the best demonstration of trail braking for the street I've ever see
Amazing! Just want you to know that your '2 fingers standing by on the front brake' method while controlling/regulating throttle has made me more confident in handling my bike better at corners 💪
Thanks!
thank you!!
Hey Man awesome Trailbraking demonstration! I saw one of your trailbraking videos years ago and now I always do it. Also the video about our peripheral vision being hyper sensitive to motion also was very eye opening. Thanks!
Just a quick thing I noticed regarding your cornering line in this clip. When you do your left corners keep right longer then go into the corner later, this will give you more distance to the center line of the road (for busses and trucks) and it will give you further sight and more reaction time. Your right corners are fine. Maybe here too a bit later and wider of an entry to exit a bit further right. again giving you more insight to the corner and a better judgment if it before committing to a line.
Thanks for your work! You are saving lots of lives 👌
Hope this helps to become an even greater rider. Greeting from Luxembourg, Europe
Dude! Those masking tape indexes are GENIOUS.
That’s was awesome to watch . Pictures speak a thousand words. Thanks
Good demonstration. I dont think you were going fast enough to braking in all thise corners. Would have been faster and safer just to use throttle
Love this one! @MotoJitsu is quickly become one of my fav motorcycle related channels to watch. Lots of great content! We have a big (ish) riding group in North Carolina with riders of all experience levels and we have our own app. I often post these videos on our app as educational videos for riders to understand riding concepts and this one is going up! So easing on the throttle while applying light braking? I’m new to riding, not trying to be a smart ass lol
Yes Sir! Excellent video demonstrating the technique. Bravo!
That is a very effective way of showing the practical application of trail braking. Job well done Sir.
This helped me a lot! I realized I’ve been pausing after engine braking before I added front brake. I see here, they can virtually overlap.
Depends on the pace you’re going

Sure, at a gentle pace I can do nearly all my deceleration with the engine. But I have a lot to gain here for brisk riding.
This is the best demo ever to explain it!!! Hats off.

For an ABS bike, it works fine, for performances riding it's good
Except that, it's bad because you're heating the brake pads (brake pads reliability decreased) and you burn fuel for no reason (bad fuel economy)
well that does it. as you throttle out of a turn, you naturally and gradually let go of the brake! fantàstic
You're the very last rider that I'd want to follow . Not saying that you're not doing it right just that all that brake lights on off on off on off and on again would drive me nuts which is the opposite of why I go riding which is to relax and enjoy the scenery at a much slower speed .if I ever have to emergency brake while cornering then hopefully my 45 + years of riding will kick in instinctively . Rubber side down
You wouldn’t be keeping up to worry about it
I like this two camera perspective video. You should do this for all sorts of terrains, even slow and steep trails . It also gives an idea as to where the Head is pointed to.This is such a great way to learn.
I have videos like that
Why use brakes when you can just let go of the throttle and not throttle up like every straight inch of road? Seems like extra unnecessary steps to me
the pace...that's why. At a much slower speed...maybe only rolling off the gas in enough to slow me down, but not at this pace.

Nice video. Very well done. Street riding and doing this can have many situational/skill caveats and complexities. That's why MSF and others tend to not recommend it. So in past videos i’ve heard you say that with 0% angle you can go 100% throttle. With that said, can you actually go full throttle and still have some lean angle? 1:40 shows you at full throttle (i assume that last dot is full throttle) but with some lean angle coming out of the corner.
Yup, that analogy is a good general way to explain...you can do a lot more than that.

This is good. My zrx1100 has a full throttle throw of only 80 degrees from the factory so you cant see much except the braking in a gopro. I did a video similar to this once and was shocked how little throttle movement there was. I think quarter turn throttles get people in trouble on liter bikes as much as anything else. If you have another bike with a quarter turn throttle on it, it would be interesting to see this same format on that bike.
👍🏼
If i may, i think people are also "upgrading" their thtottles to something called a "quick turn" or something, on my particular bike (possibly others?) I cant imagine that for me. I think having a throttle that behaves like a light switch is a bad idea.
People will do anything besides learn how to ride

never had problems with this and did this since the very first times in the twisties (used to tracking cars) but I honestly still suck at controlling the throttle while keeping it like that
At 1:52 I could hear you throttle but video on the right didn't show any throttle movement... How'd you do that?
Then you missed it
I wonder if this could work for scooters? And also my scooter has one of those CBS (Combi Brake System) where if I squeeze the left brake lever (rear brake), the right brake lever is also engaged but depending on how much I squeeze the left brake - getting a 70:30 braking power.
Bike doesn’t matter
I'm still trying to learn how to do this myself.
Most of those corners wouldn't require any brake. Every video I watch doesn't show a road where it's required, so I'm not getting the entire picture. I'll get it eventually.
When you roll off the throttle just before applying the brake - are you rolling completely off or are you still giving a little bit of throttle?
Should be called the best way to waste your break pads
I don’t get it, he applies brake before a corner to adjust speed.. I mean that’s normal right, what’s the big deal?
So do you have to be using your left hand too at the same time?
Thanks, on a ride down the Great Ocean Road here in Victoria Australia, coming back trail breaking just clicked,. It felt like I was more in control. It seemed as tho I was really slow in teh corners but i was gaining on other riders in the group. After watching your video it matched to what I was doing.
