Today i wanted to tackle a subject, that is a bit different than the general theme of this channel. I wanted to make a video about how i got into medical residency in Germany as a Non-EU citizen. It is something, that I get a lot of questions about in my personal life from my colleagues and friends. I wanted to make a quick and informative video, especially because I personally know how confusing and difficult the process can be, if you’re trying to do everything alone. I also had pretty much no sources, as I was preparing myself for this journey and know that I could benefit from a video of this kind at the beginning. This video is in no shape or form a 100% guide. I just wanted to give a general guideline and try to draw the big picture of how the process looks like. I hope you find this video informative and helpful. You can comment your questions down below. takes 1.5-2years to become a resident in Germany, but what exactly does
this period of time represent? Is it the time it takes to study the

Thank you for the detailed information, however, there are still some burning questions that I have. I am currently not living in Germany and would like to apply for the Approbation and also, to search for jobs. How would I go about going to Germany? Would applying for Approbation give me the necessary visa to stay for the FSP? Would I have to apply for a Visum zur Anerkennung ausländischer Berufsqualifikation or Visum zur Arbeitsplatzsuche: „Jobseeker“ ? Would it be better to apply for a Berufserlaubnis first and then apply for Approbation? In which states is it quicker to get your Approbation done with? When I apply for Approbation, how soon must I take the FSP and KP? Though I understand that to apply for a Berufserlaubnis, I would have to score a job first. This is where I am quite worried and unsure on what course of action to take. Honestly, I would like to prepare for the FSP and KP in Germany as I have heard there are preparatory classes available. Also, since I am also from a country outside of EU and EEA, I will try to do Anerkennung and perhaps KP. How was your experience with these two? Did you take preparatory classes? If so, where? Hey! Sorry for the late reply. Work has been crazy lately. 🙂 I understand your worry completely. It‘s a very complicated process. It‘s also hard for me to answer all your questions. It‘s all a matter of what the visa qualifications from your country are. How long can you stay here with that certain type of visa? Can you also extend your visa, while you‘re here? These are the questions I would research for my own country, if I were you. People come with all different types of visas. I‘ve seen many people with „Language-Course“ visas, also many as „Jobseekers“. People try to compact their goals and try to get a job and „Berufserlaubnis“ for example as soon as possible and go from there most of the time. As soon as you find a job and are qualified to work, process is much easier.
I don‘t know how long it takes in other states but it takes A LONG TIME in Berlin. I can say that. I started working with a Berufserlaubnis and waited almost 2 Years to get an appointment for KP. But from what I‘ve heard about other states, I would also prepare myself for at least 1,5 Years if you want to go for Appropation directly and need to take KP for it. If it somehow doesn‘t take that long, it’s great. You have prepared yourself for the worst already. 😀
For your other question… I haven‘t taken any courses for KP. I personally had the feeling that it was doable, if you study a few months by yourself but I have seen many people who take the courses and benefit from them as well. It depends on what kind of an education you had, if you can trust your theoretical knowledge and if you definitely need support to learn german medical terminology. I think they‘re becoming more and more popular as more foreign doctors come but it definitely is not a necessity in my opinion.

No, as far as I know, it has nothing to do with your residency. As soon as you have a blue card, it‘s only a few years into permanent residency 🙂 I don‘t know every single requirement for individual countries of course.

In Berlin it's a really REALLY long process, if you're coming from a non-eu country. I would go and say almost 1,5 - 2 years. You can just google ''the name of the state, Approbation, Arzt''. It'll take you the website of the state office, which is responsible for Approbation. There you can just read the required documents! Hope this helps!

I don‘t want to give false information but I‘ve never heard of one. I‘ve seen residents from a wide range of age groups 🙂 I would just ask for it when you go to the appointments for Approbation or just send an email for the unclear questions.

You should talk the conditions with the hospital directly. But I wouldn’t personally guess, that you‘d get paid for them. Hospitals can sometimes offer accommodation. When not free mostly at a better price that usual 😊

Hii I am a dental student wants to do my PG in germany I'm bit confused what visa I should apply for. Is the language visa is good to come germany to learn B2 and C1 language if yes how long it takes. Once I come to germany can I convert may language visa into any another visa so that I can get more time to go through abbreviation and FSP exam . thanks for the informative video! Quick question though, particular to my case, I am an EU citizen (Portugal) but am finishing my medical studies in Brazil. Immediately after graduating, how long do you estimate for one to be on his first day of residency in Germany?
I don’t know the exact rules for Brazil but what matters is where you studied at the end. If not in EU, you’ll need to go through the process. It depends heavily on the state you want to get into of course. I would guess, if you just want to start working with “Berufserlaubnis” which doesn’t count as residency, you can estimate at the best a few months to a year or so (I’m of course thinking you can already speak German) and for an “Approbation” depending on if you take the test or go for “Anerkennung” around a year to sometimes two. It’s really hard to guess, because it also depends heavily on how easy you can get a job permit etc. (You’re from EU, so I’m guessing it wouldn’t be that hard, but still). There are a million factors unfortunately 🙂.

Search for Logbuch in Psychiatry. Maybe they will accept your residency, maybe not.
Most important is to have enough practical experience( hours in different wards with proof, number of patients with proof...). For everything you will need proof with very detailed explanation.
Just make sure you have everything covered from Logbuch.
Most important is acute psychiatry.

Is it possible for a fresh medical graduate Star all these steps and get the permanent licencing without internship period( I study in Ukraine and due to the language barrier we can't do internship afterwards) I have heard that we must have a 21 months of internship before entering Germany. I am so confused. Would be glad if Pu could help.
The internship process I talked about was just to gain more experience and improve your language. Other than that there were no requirements for me to do any kinds of internships in Germany during my studies. I don’t think it would be required if you want to take Kenntnisprüfung anyways. Some countries do that and the rules change every day. I would definitely suggest you to google “ Ukraine, Approbation Arzt, the name of the state you want to go in” and just read the required steps. It’s most of the time really clear or there’s an e-mail address to get more information. 🙂

I don’t actually know, if it helps at all to took PLAB2 when it comes to the process of “Anerkennung” or “Approbation” in Germany. I’ve never heard anything about it though 🤔

Yes I’ve heard from many people, that they could somehow get some part of their specialty training (sometimes all of it) to be recognized. I don’t know if there is a standard procedure for that though. I think they just got in contact with the state office and asked what kind of documents they would need to present (which is a really good idea and i would suggest you to do it as well). You need to go through the entire process of getting an “Approbation” anyways. I don’t know what exactly you can do afterwards though. I don’t want to misinform. If I get to meet someone who went through the process I would definitely like to make a video together though. I think it’s an important question and a lot of people want to get informed about it as well 😊

I just took lessons in my own country and spent a few months in Germany as an intern during medical school. I also took a „C1“ Course at the very end in Germany just to practice more with native speakers 😊

Thank you, I study in a non EU country which is Belarus, many say in order to get a visa to Germany to do exams we must pay up to 11,000$ to prove we have the capability to take care of oneself in Germany , please is this true?
I‘m not sure if it‘s that high of an amount but some types of German Visas require you to deposit a certain amount of money to a bank account, which you‘ll get paid back monthly. That much is true, I think 😊. At least it was like that a few years ago.

It really depends on the uni and how well and detailed your curriculum is. Most important factor is if people from that particular uni already got the recognition without exam in the past. Other than that it unfortunately is just a guessing game and mostly ends up in taking the exam as I have seen around me.

@@Yazan26579 hello there. I hope I understood your question right but you don’t need a Berufserlaubnis to apply for Approbation. They’re two separate entities. Berufserlaubnis helps you to start working as soon as possible until you get your Approbation but it doesnt count as residency until you get your Approbation in hand. You can also say that you’d rather not work until you get Approbation and just go for it directly.

It’s definitely is a bit confusing. 🙂 As far as I know , what matters is where you got your medical degree from. If you got it from a non-EU country, you’ll need to go through pretty much the same procedures I would guess. Of course there will be a lot of parts that would be much easier for you, because you will not need a visa or work-permit etc. The websites are also not 100% clear about those kinds of complex situations. I would suggest you to just write an email to the state office of where you want to work in Germany and ask for detailed information or if there is anything different in comparison to someone who comes from a non-EU country. I wouldn’t want to misinform here😊

Hey there. Thanks for your question. Well i can’t answer that with %100 certainty but I would guess not that deeply. It would effect it, if you’re going directly for “Anerkennung” without the examination but if you’re just in for “Kenntnisprüfung” it shouldn’t matter that much logically because you’ll be going through the examination to prove that your knowledge is in line with the German standards anyways.

It depends on where you live. Living costs, especially rent, is quite high here in Berlin for example. In small cities it‘s a lot cheaper. All in all though, you‘d have enough money to live comfortably if you‘re not aiming for a very luxurious life. 😊

No it’s not required to do internships but it helps a lot to familiarize yourself with the healthcare system and german medical language of course! 🙂
Do we need to be registered doctors or have some medical practice done before coming to Germany?
You mean registered doctors in your own country? Probably. They mostly require you to bring a paper from your own „Doctor‘s Council“. Medical practice was not required though as I came. It is of course good for your CV and increases your chances of finding a job. 😊

you can just simply write an email to the head of the department in any clinic you'd like to rotate in (preferably with a CV of course). Some clinics post official offerings for a rotation but most of the time not really. I personally just wrote emails to any clinic I felt interested in. They reply back and tell you if that'd be possible. They're mostly really kind and would offer you an opportunity!
I think you can apply for Anerkennung before doing FSP exam. I don't know how the situation is in other states but in Berlin for Example, you'll need to prove that you applied for Approbation before you can even arrange an appointment for FSP anyways!

don't do your residency here in Germany. The situation is getting worse day by day. Payment is getting less and run out. It's spreading like fire among residents. A lot of bureaucracy and you will NOT learn anything useful if you are a foreigner. Even German residents can't find time to do practical stuff. You will just be doing bureaucracy all the time.

It differs. Also depends on how many years you’ve worked . You can google “Entgelttabelle Ärzte” or “Tarifvertrag Ärzte” and the name of the Hospital or State. You‘ll most probably be seeing „Brutto“ numbers. Which means there‘ll be taxes cut from it as well. 🙂
