I went to the Monterey Bay Aquarium a few years ago and it was amazing. The coolest thing about these squid is that when you go up to the glass to look at them, they totally look back at you with what seems to be the same kind of fascination and awe
My father once tried to show them a video of themselves and they all gathered around to check out his phone before darting off. Just wondrous little creatures.

I went to the Monterey Bay Aquarium when I was 15, and I am about to be 20 and I still have dreams about the exhibits. I can't wait to be back, and "sea" these little dudes. Keep up the great work.
I love watching the squid change their colors & patterns, I believe they do it to communicate with each other. Also as suggestion I'd love to see some octopus they're one of the most intelligent animals on earth & I admire them very much.
What happens at 2:37? One in middle right turns pink and starts to attack another squid who jets left, turns brown, and returns immediately. The others seemed to move in to make things cool. Or is this anthropomorphic projection?
Good observation! The bigfin reef squid are highly social and they have a distinct hierarchy-it appears one took umbrage to another and decided to check them with a color change and jolt forward, and you can see the rest of them reacting to the social outburst!
@@crys4rmsd619 Awe, thanks! You're so sweet! We all do what we can to make this world a better place! I'm actually still laughing at what this one woman replied to me several weeks ago. When I was little my parents always has a hard time pulling me away from certain exhibits whenever we would go to an aquarium or zoo. I remember enjoying watching certain exhibits so much that I just wanted to chill with them for hours. I feel so enabled right now lol
I often go to zoos and spend hours sitting in front of one exhibit, watching the animals interact, dig, whatever, and listening to adult after adult saying some variation of "Come on, we have to go to the next one" ... and thinking "Why? Why do you have to go to the next one?" Let the kid watch, for godsake!
I love how they seem to be just as comfortable swimming backwards as they do forwards, I'm actually now unsure which way is forwards for a squid. Also think you might've struck on some gold here with the lofi squid combo, I was sceptical when RUclips recommended me a two hour long video of squid swimming about, but it's 1am and I'm still here, so it's clearly working
I believe the different swimming directions are used for different things. backwards swimming is faster if you need to make a quick getaway from a predator (and also lets you squirt ink right at a predators face without having to turn), and forward swimming is slower but more precise, perfect for sneaking up on an unsuspecting shrimp (and puts your tentacles in the right place to grab it)
This vid reminds me of something that happened when I was a kid. I was in town to meet with some friends, but Mum asked me to visit a local pet shop to pick up some fish food and I found they had a tank full of seashorses for sale. I ended up just watching them for ages, fascinated and mesmerized by the wonderful little creatures.
