@@danieldoria8820 finally someone from CT who chimes in. So should I wait till fall to overseed?..what pre emerg do you use and how? New homeowner here and need some tips from a local. Thx
@@ryanknorrlawncare like if you were overseeding in the spring and you used tenacity as pre-em everywhere, then hit the edges of the lawn where crabgrass pressure may be higher (i.e. driveway and sidewalk edges) with prodiamine. This assumes you're not trying to grow turf near the edge and are just trying to thicken up the main part of the lawn. Label says they can tank mix, but I haven't seen anyone use this as a strategy.
@@KBcooks1 The same day. I've used a lesco pre-emergent/ starter fertilizer combo product, & thrown down grass seed the same day, it prevents all broadleaf weeds from growing, yet grass seeds germinate. I've been doing it for 3 or 4 years now.

Hi Ryan thanks for the video! I bought a house last year and put down seeds in the backyard, it was previously all dirt. I skipped the preemergent and ended up with more clover than grass. Any tips for what I should do this spring? I haven’t fertilized them lawn yet either.
Do I need to mow before applying prodiamine. I’m in Southwest Ohio and I believe we had our last winter storm. Temps will be in 60s this week and my lawn is just starting to green up.
Hey Ryan! I bought a newly built home just under 2 years ago. I've worked very hard at building a brand new lawn, I've laid down a couple of rounds of Weed and Feed, and watered heavily. It was looking fairly good, but still had plenty of weeds. We then got hit with a 3-month drought earlier this Spring/Summer, so all lawns around here took a dive. Things have greened up significantly now, but I again have a ton of weeds. May I ask your advise on what I should be using in late Summer to early Fall to not necessarily rid the weeds this Fall, but to prepare for a strong start weed-free in the Spring? I still have a lot of dead spots with packed down dead grass from the drought, so I imagine I'll want to rake those spots up and re-seed, but it's likely too late in the season, I'd imagine. Thanks for any info you'd be willing to share!
@@ademuth7687 when it cools down and recovery is better speedzone usually takes out most things. Hit it hard with fert. Look up my fall fertilizer videos and there's more info there as well as my cool season guide on my website
Ryan, Taking potential runoff into consideration, is it OK to apply a PE to established areas, and also seed bare areas w.o PM? Example, I installed a fence late this fall/winter and tore up several areas around the property perimeter, but the middle of the lawn is fine. Can I apply PM and not stress about the germination in bare areas?
@Ryan , if I have someone treating my lawn on a regular basis. Is there anything I need to watch out for when they treat that I shouldn’t apply liquid Iron along with, or does it not matter?
QUESTION: If you did a full renovation last fall and you're concerned with using prodiamine due to the root development issues, could you not just use tenacity as a pre emergent? maybe do 2 rounds 30 days apart to get through into the summer? Then hit it with prodiamine come fall?
According to what I heard Ryan say, yes you could use tenacity early in the spring and a second round if necessary. Then overseed in the fall. Didn't think prodiamine is recommended or necessary for fall as temps are declining and crabgrass needs warmer temps. You would be using contact or systemic weed killers in fall after the young grasses have matured and can handle chems... At least that's what I'm getting out of the vid.
In other words...tenacity and seed in spring, OR prodiamine in spring and overseed in fall... I'm going with spring seeding with tenacity. Hopefully, I can get a quick thick lawn that will overtake the early summer crabgrass intrusion.
You can use it but it won't have the same kind of effect as prodiamine does in terms of creating a barrier in the soil that lasts for months and is extremely effective when applied correctly and watered in. That's the downside but as I mentioned, post emergent control works well if you don't let the weeds get out of hand early summer.
If you just seed in the spring and don't use pre-emerge you will wind up with crabgrass in any area the seed doesn't take, and there will be such areas. I go with spot-seeding any small bare spots in the spring and just try to avoid those spots with the pre emerge. If you accidentally hit those spots and the seeds are inhibited, you are no worse off than you were. Then do your major reseeding in the fall.
Did your neighbor buddy who you helped with his yard move away? Looked like a "For Sale" sign in his yard from that drone footage in the fall. That would be interesting to see how a new owner maintains that yard now that it is in tip top shape!
Hey Ryan, great info. Is putting down the pre-emergent a one time spring application or can I wait 30 days and put down a second application of prodiamine? Hearing conflicting opinions on this. Thanks for all the information.
I have a question. I did a dormant seeding late last fall using some your KBG product from your website. This is the first time I tried dormant seeding. I live in the mid-west, so the temps dropped low this week. When the temperatures rise, is it ok to apply a liquid post emergent herbicide to the entire lawn? Or, do I spot treat the weeds? Or, do I need to wait until I start seeing some of the grass from the dormant seeding appear. The broadleaf weeds, and other weeds, are starting to appear-especially where the grass meets the concrete.
I would spot spray but know that whenever you seed it's recommended on most labels to not use any herbicides until the grass has germinated and you've mowed 2-3 times.
Top dress first, seed and then apply fertilizer. It insures that the seed and fertilizer is evenly distributed. The process of raking out the top soil will move the seed and fertilizer into clusters and you will have uneven grass growth. I use a garden weasel to work the seed into the topsoil as the last step. Works well for my small lawn.
so if someone did a dormant seed on thin areas right before winter in Minnesota would it not be wise to use a pre emergent in those areas if they actually get decent germination and a chance for the grass to become mature and part of the existing lawn?
But get ferilizer easy like I drop mine March 4 and I will wait 6 weeks then I will do my reseeding on already grass in lawn.wanted the turf builder and deeper roots for reseeding
I had a lawn that was all crab grass. This fall it is all new PR/KBG. You say no Pre.E or roots would be damaged? How long before they recover? I do not want a crab grass lawn after all that hard work that got me to where i am know. Should i just have T-zone/tenacity and Quin available at my side for the spring and summer and just spot treat. Will 1 season of new lawn be enough to stop root pruning?
You can go with pre emergent but I would pair that with more of a spoon feeding fertilizer program to help maintain consistent feeding. If it was all crabgrass before it will definitely want to come back in some capacity.
@@ryanknorrlawncare Thank you for getting back to me I really appreciate it could I just apply Scott's starter fertilizer again with meso? And then spot treat as needed to avoid pruning
@@Supanova70 in your case I would go with traditional pre emergent like prodiamine and do a split application. If you had a full lawn of crabgrass spot treating would be difficult and the starter with meso isn't going to be enough to keep it all down.
@@ryanknorrlawncare I remember one of your videos you did that I believe 2nd application was early may if I'm not mistaken. Probably seen every single one of your videos lol
So question: I live in the Middle of South Dakota and the average last frost date is the beginning of May so I wouldn’t plant seed until then. But the soil temp is a little over 40 degrees so I know it’s still early for pre emergent too but we have days that the temp are in the 60s-70s. So if I applied pre emergent early now so that I can wait the recommended 8 weeks to seed in mid may would either or both work still?
@@ryanknorrlawncare gotcha, I had remembered seeing one last year at my local store that had said to wait a minimum of 8 weeks and I wasn’t sure if that was actually accurate because I looked online and it said the 3 months, so I was confused
If u do a lawn renovation in fall, the next spring u don’t use Prodiamine. Then is it safe to use speed zone or other post-emergents? When should I place those post emergents, then I should overseed the area in the fall again?
it is December and im seeing poa annual. and i just did a lawn renovation with tall fescue. so should i do a pre emergent in March. and spray tenacity or certainty to help kill poa annual and then buy more tall fescue grass seed and reseed in September and apply tenacity as a pre emergent when seeding and then in October put down another pre emergent. can you please help. or do a vedio on this problem.
I need advice for my lawn situation. Moved into a new house last summer just outside chicago. I attempted to overseed at the beginning of September and did not get great results. I believe it was a fairly dry year in the region so guessing that is partially why. However, I watered frequently and the seed just did not germinate. Now going into the spring, is there hope that the previously laid seed will germinate? If so I probably would not want to do pre-emergent. And found even add a little more overseed.
Can you apply the pre-emergent too early? It’s been a really crazy spring this year(2022) here in Sota! I understand that soil temps right around 50 degrees or so is ideal but what happens if you miss that narrow window.
So I overseeded last fall. I still have a few areas that didn't take like I would have liked. How long after using pre-emergent would it be safe to try and seed these areas?
Ryan, thanks for the awesome info as always! Do you use a surfactant when using Tenacity for post emergent use? Just curious if the results will be significantly better?
I've had goose grass in the past, I had used a pre emergent last year, I had also overseeded last fall, do you recommend using a pre emergent this year or let the grass get more developed?
@@larrygriffin4937 I use Tenacity on my goose grass with great success and it doesn't affect new seeding. I have tall fescue in my yard. I use it mostly as a post emergent but it can be used as a pre emergent but it doesn't last long as granular pre emergent. You may need to spray again after a month. I ha vf e a 28,000 square foot lawn so spraying that much that frequently is just not something I want to do.
I did a lawn reno last fall with 100% KBG. Will the spreading really begin to take off in the spring with regular feedings? I'm trying to figure out whether I want to overseed or use a pre emergent. It isn't very thick yet, and there are several areas with minimal grass due to washouts.
Moss, moss and more moss. It seems to have taken over most of the front and backyard. It was just a small pocket in a shaded area before winter and now its everywhere. What should I do ? Seems there is more moss than grass now. Ahhhh!
Hey Ryan, I've got dirt at the moment and my builder is going to Hydroseed. I want to put perennial rye grass at the same time they Hydroseed. Curious what your thoughts are on this? Can I carpet the ground with seed do you think?
You could always contact the hydroseed company before they show up and give them your seed to use. They mix the slurry custom for each job, no reason they couldn't use your seed instead of theirs.
No pre-m for me this year. Thought I had fungus issues cause i couldnt figure out why after water the lawn it looked dry the next day. Turns out I have clubbed roots. Just gonna be me and the weeds this year.
Thank you so much for getting back to me. This was my thinking exactly to let the roots get as established as possible and allow for maximal seam filling. Thank you for all your videos and information you provide every year!
This is a problem I have. I have two shelties and a yellow lab. We keep them out of the front which looks great. But our back is always a battle. Are lab eats poop so we trample the yard in the winter to pick it all up. So I always have damage come spring. So I'm crossing my fingers and not using a pre emergent so I can repair. Such a battle with those guys. We water their pee spots and it's still not enough.
I over-seeded in the fall in mid to late September here in Kansas, the weather turned quick and there are several areas I’m a little worried about. I have been wondering if I should spray pre-emergent or not. I’m thinking about putting down some more seed, especially in the areas that look thin, and spraying pre-emergent on the ditches and edges of the lawn where the crab grass and sandbur pressure was last summer. Should I put tenacity down for the rest of the lawn and overseed a week or two later? Or vice versa?
@@ryanknorrlawncare I follow the recommended time to keep my dog off the lawn after applying tenacity. Have you had issues with dogs ingesting grass and getting sick? I’m just trying to keep the pup safe. I go beyond the recommended time frame of 4-6 hours. I usually wait 48 hours before I let the pups back on the lawn. Just looking for people’s experience with tenacity and dogs. Thanks.
Ryan great video! Does tenacity also cause roots to develop slowly? If we did a lawn renovation in the fall, is tenacity a good option for a preemergent that won’t harm the roots?
Tenacity will not slow root growth. The active ingredient is mesotrione. The ingredient is the only weed killer that you can use while planting new grass seed. You can even buy starter fertilizer with it already mixed in such as Scott’s Starter Fertilizer with Weed Preventer. The down side is that it has a short effective life cycle of around 28 days once applied to your turf. What I have done successfully is applied the starter fert at the time of seeding and 3 weeks later after seeding. Pushes growth while helping to control weeds from popping up.
As I mentioned in the video, it is an option but not going to be the same type of effect that prodiamine or similar has in the soil where it creates a long lasting barrier.
What happens if you drop pre-enmergent... but instead of just putting down seed... you pre germinate the lawn seed and drop it with miligrant? In otherwords.. if the seed has germinated and you drop it.. will it survive lawn treated with a pre-emergent weed killer?
Have you done any pre-germination or seed priming? I’ve done a few small batches this spring with great success. I’m planning an 11,000 sq ft renovation for the Fall and am wondering if I can have similar success with a large batch of seed.

Thank you for all the great videos. I'm here in NYC and plan on overseeding this spring (I did in the fall as well). My plan is spray Tenacity 2x and overseed. Can and should I apply a different pre emergent such as Prodiamine after 30 days to hold off the weeds until I apply Tenacity again in the Fall when I overseed again?
I’m from CT. Did the same last year, tenacity and over-seed. With the right water, grass was green all fall. I also aerated in the fall which was clutch. Looking forward to this year! #AllLawnsMatter
It would not be recommended to use it on grass that's just been planted, even 30 days out would be hard on the roots of the new turf
@@danieldoria8820 finally someone from CT who chimes in. So should I wait till fall to overseed?..what pre emerg do you use and how? New homeowner here and need some tips from a local. Thx
You are a life saver... very good videos!
Planning on using tenacity with some overseeding. Love these videos. Can you put spoedzone down now and then seed and tenacity at end of april
Yes you can.
Check the label again but I believe it's 4 weeks that are needed in between
Hey Ryan , LOVE your videos and advice ! How much would you charge to keep up a 2,000 square ft lawn ? Tall fescue
Have you ever heard of someone using tenacity in the spring but prodiamine on the edges of the lawn that get heat from pavement?
So you can seed in the middle portion?
@@ryanknorrlawncare like if you were overseeding in the spring and you used tenacity as pre-em everywhere, then hit the edges of the lawn where crabgrass pressure may be higher (i.e. driveway and sidewalk edges) with prodiamine. This assumes you're not trying to grow turf near the edge and are just trying to thicken up the main part of the lawn. Label says they can tank mix, but I haven't seen anyone use this as a strategy.
I use a lesco pre-emergent and starter fertilizer pretty much every spring when I reseed.
Matthew, how much time in between the pre-emergent and starter fertilizer & seedling?
@@KBcooks1 The same day. I've used a lesco pre-emergent/ starter fertilizer combo product, & thrown down grass seed the same day, it prevents all broadleaf weeds from growing, yet grass seeds germinate. I've been doing it for 3 or 4 years now.
I live in Washington. I have bald spots in lawn, generalized dandelions and moles what do you suggest I do ?
I just bought my first home last year and coming into spring I want to do the right thing. The yard has a lot of weeds in it. I live in Wisconsin also. What would you recommend and what steps to do in the summer.
The best weed prevention is a healthy turf. So I say seed seed seed with ferts and grow a super healthy thick turf. Post emergent if needed.
Hi Ryan thanks for the video! I bought a house last year and put down seeds in the backyard, it was previously all dirt. I skipped the preemergent and ended up with more clover than grass. Any tips for what I should do this spring? I haven’t fertilized them lawn yet either.
Thanks for the information! Is now a good time to address my creeping Charlie issue?
How does living in the transition zone affect the schedule of seeding, fertilizer, etc?
You're probably a little earlier than us northerners and have a slightly extended fall season
What is the best grass seed for Seattle? I am starting a new lawn after removing sod and grading yard. I would say my yard gets more sun than shade.
What's the general location?
@@ryanknorrlawncare That’d help! Lol. South central Wisconsin. 👍🏻

I live in the country with a shallow well is it a good idea to be putting fertilizer or other products down to control weeds ??
Hi Ryan. Can I put down both Starter Fert and Scotts Weed Preventer at the same time?
Ryan,
Taking potential runoff into consideration, is it OK to apply a PE to established areas, and also seed bare areas w.o PM?
Example, I installed a fence late this fall/winter and tore up several areas around the property perimeter, but the middle of the lawn is fine.
Can I apply PM and not stress about the germination in bare areas?
@Ryan , if I have someone treating my lawn on a regular basis. Is there anything I need to watch out for when they treat that I shouldn’t apply liquid Iron along with, or does it not matter?
@Ryan Knorr - what are your thoughts on pre-germinating grass seed? How does that fit into fertilizers and weed control protocols?
Following as I have been thinking of pre germinating some seed in my heated garage this spring.
@@paulanderson4985 thanks bro!!
You can use it but it won't have the same kind of effect as prodiamine does in terms of creating a barrier in the soil that lasts for months and is extremely effective when applied correctly and watered in. That's the downside but as I mentioned, post emergent control works well if you don't let the weeds get out of hand early summer.
How about using corn gluten as a pre emergant plus lawn food early and then a month later reseed
They moved but I doubt the yard will be maintained. :(
absolutely love seeing those empty keystone cans in the back! 🤩

Great video-is there any advantage to aerating before laying down a pre- emergent?
i think im going to dethatch, aerate, overseed, and top dress this spring. starter fertalizer goes on before i top dress correct?
Top dress first, seed and then apply fertilizer. It insures that the seed and fertilizer is evenly distributed. The process of raking out the top soil will move the seed and fertilizer into clusters and you will have uneven grass growth. I use a garden weasel to work the seed into the topsoil as the last step. Works well for my small lawn.
@@Hawkeye23456 thanks buddy! screenshot taken so i dont forget lol
Spring can't come soon enough, Ryan!
so if someone did a dormant seed on thin areas right before winter in Minnesota would it not be wise to use a pre emergent in those areas if they actually get decent germination and a chance for the grass to become mature and part of the existing lawn?
Correct
Is it possible to put down pre-e too soon? Assuming the snow has melted.
Can you apply a pre emergent in the spring, and if need be later on successfully do an all in one Patchmaster type product for spots?
But get ferilizer easy like I drop mine March 4 and I will wait 6 weeks then I will do my reseeding on already grass in lawn.wanted the turf builder and deeper roots for reseeding
I.m in area 7 transition Midwest Illiniois by Carlyle Lake.
So question:
I live in the Middle of South Dakota and the average last frost date is the beginning of May so I wouldn’t plant seed until then. But the soil temp is a little over 40 degrees so I know it’s still early for pre emergent too but we have days that the temp are in the 60s-70s. So if I applied pre emergent early now so that I can wait the recommended 8 weeks to seed in mid may would either or both work still?
Where are you getting 8 weeks? The pre emergent will last 3 months minimum but usually longer at normal rates

@@ryanknorrlawncare i usally do that until leaf season is upon us then I bag everything.
Not likely it will have been sitting there that whole time and germinate in spring, unfortunately.
Thanks for the reply. I edited a typo, meant to say I overseeded at the beginning of September (not Summer).
Very helpful video Ryan. Thank you
Can you apply the pre-emergent too early? It’s been a really crazy spring this year(2022) here in Sota! I understand that soil temps right around 50 degrees or so is ideal but what happens if you miss that narrow window.
So I overseeded last fall. I still have a few areas that didn't take like I would have liked. How long after using pre-emergent would it be safe to try and seed these areas?
Depends on your rate. It's usually months at a minimum
Ryan, thanks for the awesome info as always! Do you use a surfactant when using Tenacity for post emergent use? Just curious if the results will be significantly better?
Yes I do
@@ryanknorrlawncare thanks Sir!
Is it ok to put down tenacity every few weeks for the first couple of months ?
Label will tell you the yearly maximums
What’s the mixing rate for prodiamine per thousand?
I've had goose grass in the past, I had used a pre emergent last year, I had also overseeded last fall, do you recommend using a pre emergent this year or let the grass get more developed?
Planted tall fescue and yes I have some bare spots
@@larrygriffin4937 I use Tenacity on my goose grass with great success and it doesn't affect new seeding. I have tall fescue in my yard. I use it mostly as a post emergent but it can be used as a pre emergent but it doesn't last long as granular pre emergent. You may need to spray again after a month. I ha vf e a 28,000 square foot lawn so spraying that much that frequently is just not something I want to do.
@@bobziadie2988 Thank you Bob I will definitely be trying that this year!!
Last Aussie 😁. Ryan , great advice as usual. 😎
Would I be able to put grass seed down how.then put weed and feed or crabgrass killer down in late April or early may
New grass usually needs at least 4 weeks after germination before any sort of herbicide is used. Longer is better if possible to let the grass mature.
Liquid 10-10-10. The jug is for acres and doesn’t say the rate to use per 1000sq ‘ per gal of water. Any help is appreciated
I did a lawn reno last fall with 100% KBG. Will the spreading really begin to take off in the spring with regular feedings? I'm trying to figure out whether I want to overseed or use a pre emergent. It isn't very thick yet, and there are several areas with minimal grass due to washouts.
It will probably take until next fall to get it looking really thick and kbg like. It's very slow but spoon feeding it helps a lot.
Moss, moss and more moss. It seems to have taken over most of the front and backyard. It was just a small pocket in a shaded area before winter and now its everywhere. What should I do ? Seems there is more moss than grass now. Ahhhh!
Thanks Ryan. Another good video..
Hey Ryan,
I've got dirt at the moment and my builder is going to Hydroseed.
@@wally7856 I asked, the builder won't put me in contact with them...
No pre-m for me this year. Thought I had fungus issues cause i couldnt figure out why after water the lawn it looked dry the next day. Turns out I have clubbed roots. Just gonna be me and the weeds this year.

Hey Ryan,
100% KBG lawn installed mid September, rooted well, last mow mid November in CT. Is it ok to apply barricade at this time for spring?
Mostly asking because the sod is super thick and my thinking is to maybe let it just take off and not risk inhibiting deep root growth this spring.
I would let it mature during the spring on its own without barricade
Wherever you decide to use the tenacity I would do it close to the time of seeding.
Thanks.
I just throw down anything I get my hands on an hope for the best
Is it safe for dogs to walk on a fertilized or weed control lawn? Granular?
First time home buyer here ... is pre-emergent capable of killing existing weeds?
No, that would be where you want a post emergent weed control
@@ryanknorrlawncare awesome. Thank you!
Can I use tenacity if I laid down a dormant seeding this year?
Yes but you would want to do so before germination starts.
Thank you for sharing this great information!
If I put pre-emergent can I fertilize after or do I have to wait? Warm season grass?
You can fertilize
Goooooood afternoon RK!
What happens if you drop pre-enmergent... but instead of just putting down seed... you pre germinate the lawn seed and drop it with miligrant? In otherwords.. if the seed has germinated and you drop it.. will it survive lawn treated with a pre-emergent weed killer?
Pre emergent creates a barrier in the soil so even if it was germinated I wouldn't see it rooting in well
Have you done any pre-germination or seed priming? I’ve done a few small batches this spring with great success. I’m planning an 11,000 sq ft renovation for the Fall and am wondering if I can have similar success with a large batch of seed.
Good job Ryan
