for some reason the fact that they fully furnished the fridge makes me very happy. Usually the fridge is empty with one item in it. There were condiments, other leftovers, etc. Very appeasing.
It's a sign of how much attention and passion went into the game, IMO. "If they cared enough to detail something that insignificant, then imagine how much work went to everything else" kinda thing.
This game is terrifying, but I swear catching that small glimpse of the feet going up stairs adds an entire new layer of fear! I can't wait for him to play the next episode of this series.
The image attachment from the mother is AMAZING. I'll be honest, I have never felt this type of horror to this degree before. I've got chills. It's not just the fact that somebody's outside, it's the fact that this poor kid's MOTHER has obviously been contacted by a worried neighbour. Their mother is nowhere near home right now, and they get a photo sent to them depicting a creepy person standing outside their door, where their young teenager is currently all alone (or rather, less alone than they should be). The mother is likely miles away, panicking because their child may be in danger, and they can't do a thing. Truly horrifying.
It’s interesting to see the different reactions of both Mark and Jack. Jack: *actually scared* Mark: *muttering to himself as he throws lasagna around the house*
Jack seeing the door open: "My god, someones in the house." Mark: *Opens door, goes outside, throws empty bowl on the ground* "It's my property, I can litter on it if I want!"
this game is horrifying. It shows that even though monsters and all this stuff is indeed a scary thing, the concept of staying at home alone with a human intruder inside is very terrifying.
Keep a 3 inch pocket knife with a clip on your waistband of boxers or gym shorts you never know and want to be under prepared. Also keep a flashlight and a handgun or rifle with flashlight for when the monsters come out.
Markiplier: "The whole concept of eating something with nothing in front of you is so boring" Me, who looked for something to watch before I ate and chose this: Yes, yes I agree
As someone that grew up alone at home most of the time, I appreciate that the game makes every moment, every sound really intense. Heck, even the silence itself is noisy on your head.
One time, while home alone, I saw someone on our porch. They didn't knock. They just stood there. I saw them try to peer in through the sidelight. I freaked out, called my parents, and spent the rest of the night locked in my parents' closet with 911 on speed dial and a very confused dog. The hour or so I spent waiting in there was probably the scariest bit. I don't think my heart stopped racing the whole time. Every sound seemed amplified. The house would settle and my blood would freeze, sure I was going to hear footsteps coming down the hall. Anyways, my dad checked the doorbell footage when they got home and it turned out it had been mormons.
What is so terrifying about this game is how real they make it feel, obviously being real stories helps, but it gives a huge unsettling feeling that makes you afraid to watch it
@@logankranrod7623 i doubt anything about the burglar killing you if you open the door, opening the parents bedrooms door near the end, waiting to kill you, mimicking that someone is at the door, is true.

The fact that you play as a Redditor was kinda funny to me, but when he devours a whole lasagna in about 30 seconds I instantly fell immersed in the role.
It’s based off a true story, and the story was submitted to Reddit so that’s why edit: So I read some more since this comment blew up and someone else first said the stories are based off of true stories, and in an interview he says “Fears to Fathom is not about ghosts and monsters, but it’s about people’s traumatic stories”. So now I’m not sure if they’re actually based on real stories, but the games are inspired by the idea
This game does a lot of things right. The atmosphere is a big part of that. Probably the worst part about it though is how it’s perfectly reasonable. Parents leave teenagers alone all the time. Home invasions happen all the time. That little view of feet going upstairs while you watch TV could actually happen. We’ve all missed something obvious while distracted. That’s what’s so terrifying about this. We can all see this exact scenario happening to us personally. It’s a different experience to say a game that focuses on some strange supernatural entity. We all know the darkness demon isn’t real but a home invader, that could happen right now. This experience hits us on a primal level of our privacy being invaded. Absolutely perfectly crafted experience that really preys on your paranoia, and a pretty reasonable paranoia at that.
I just played the game moments ago, and I totally missed to see the feet going upstairs as I was genuingly watching the "tv show" which is a few minutes long (there is a second channel btw). That's realisticly terrifying ! I don't know if all those years of horror movies / video games made me become a bit paranoid, but man I will definitely get something for self defense as soon as I get my house (feeling safer in an small appartment complex right now ^^)
Not just that, it's also the entire environment - being able to clearly see your neighbor's house or cars passing on the street makes it much more believable.
this story made into a game (as well as the other one) are supposedly given to the dev by the people who actually experienced it. And the things you describe is precisely why I seek out true-crime victim perspective stories when I want to be spooked. Those are infinitely scarier than ghost stories to me.
I think the reason this is scary to us humans is because we are hardwired to think that "home safe" so when something comes in that may be dangerous it's less expected and more scary
we are programed that way but its a false sense cuz I'm not too worried about stuff like that on a normal basis but a year before I moved in with my father and sister they actually had someone come in a few days before Christmas(they never locked doors cuz oh, stuff like that doesn't happen around here) and since then they changed the locks and have been adamant about locking the doors at night when the last person is done and goes up to bed, tho it annoys me having to lock the door, but I wouldn't want to be stuck in a situation like my sister, she had woken up to the noises of the intruder and though it was our father coughing and rolling around in his room a couple doors down, and if she had gotten up for any reason she would have come face to face with the intruder, now I'm not quite as afraid of those situations because I have a bow, 10 knifes and 2 swords stashed in my room and down by my desk in our living room and I know how to use them nor do I have qualms about hurting someone on my own property if I feel threatened tho I wont say it wouldnt take me a lot to psych myself up to leaving my room with my weapons because you never know beforehand if the guy has any weapons ie gun or not and I cant say I wouldnt be scared after the fact like my sister now is
@Savetion 1OOK RUclipsR bro you are the most cringiest human being on earth (not even sure if you're a human or not) You should start begging irl instead of begging here, I'm sure you'll earn more there.
But yeah, you sort of get desensitized to horror. 😂 99% of modern horror is gore and/or jumpscares. I give this one credit, as it uses the safe area, your home, as the source of your fear. At least in the first one anyway. All is moot if you can just tell yourself "It's just a game" though. Mark and MatPat almost never even flinch anymore, it's kind of sad. 😂
In Mark's defense... He knows people watch his videos mainly to laugh and unwind. So I can't blame him for trying to be extra funny. 😁 Still wanna legit give him a hug, though. 😂 P.s. Never saying Sean isn't funny. 😌 After all~🎶 L is for Lovers, who love one another~ A is for A$$, of which I like to eat~ U is for U're the only one for me~ G is for the only gamer I see~ H is for Happy, I always feel it~ When you put it together~ What do you get~? 🎶 ....If y'all don't get the reference, yer f**kin fired. 😘
i like how the mother gave misleading advice and it was up to the player to make the decision to stay under the bed instead of going out of his room. just felt more realistic and spooky that way, unlike most horror games where the guides or wtv holds your hand through the game
i think another thing that adds to the realism of this horror game and why this game is so scary is that the main character is simply a *normal guy*. in most mainstream horror games, the charcter you play is some giga chad who is an expert at firearms and crafting, and is not afarid to enter a clearly dangerous house. the characters in these scenarios are all realistic and relatbale in terms of their situation, making the experience more immersive.
Going outside would actually be the best option though, because if he's inside you wanna go outside and run across the street or just stand in the middle of the street because at least outside your out in the open and can see, and if he's inside he can't get you outside, he can't be inside and outside too, I think the game just makes you get got when you go out
@@Ash_NuggTato tbh idk if going outside would be the better option. you know hes lurking waiting for you, its better to hide somewhere you think he won't find you and wait it out until authorities arrive. if he had a firearm, going outside and standing in the middle of the street would just get you shot.
You are right in that aspect, but we should not forget the other part of the spectrum in which the game gives you something to defend but in limited amount. When something is coming to get you, you know you can do something and you start panicking. I love both of these types of games.
@@raianelchabe Defense in limited amounts certainly has its merits, but not quite in the way you describe. Horror thrives not just on helplessness, but also on contrast. Red becomes more vibrant when in the presence of green, and horror is likewise more effective in the presence of non-horror. That is part of why the Storage in Amnesia is so effective, because it comes immediately after the Back Hall. Therefore, in a game where you are NOT helpless, when you find yourself helpless the experience is amplified. In a game where you are ALWAYS helpless, you never are.
Even though this guy is a bot he isn’t rude like the others simply recommending is content instead of insulting the creator as seen with many other bots. I respect that.
Normally horror games don’t freak me out because I’m aware they’re just that-games, but this, this freaked me OUT. I’ve thought about this scenario happening too many times that when I go to get water at night, all I picture is someone at my back door watching me, and I can’t see them. Im going to have to finish this video tomorrow morning because wow I’m already paranoid
This game does do an excellent job at envoking a feeling of helplessness. You never know what moves will kill you. Very unlike most horror games which will tell you how to survive, via notes left around, audio logs, or just text on the screen. Add to the fact that home invasion is a real life threat, and it makes for a chilling horror game that makes people freeze.
Huh I just played this game completely blind and beat it my first time through doing the things that I saw as common sense in situations like this. Beat it in 15 minutes and didn't feel helpless at all.
@@pbower4378 Am I supposed to pretend that I was scared of a game that's not scary? Outlast gives you a sense of helplessness not this. There's barely any threat.
@@Jacket01 opinions differ my friend. This game is very unnerving especially when you consider the fact that shit like this happens in real life. You look like you're trying to show off that's why everyone is getting upset with you. I've also seen your other comments basically saying home invasion isn't that scary if you own a weapon. you wouldn't say that if this happened to you. You'd have paranoia and anxiety for the rest of your life. No weapon is gonna stop the fear you're gonna feel before, during and after home invasion. Just think most home invaders also have weapons, so don't act like you're some big tough person just because you think home invasion "isn't that scary." Take it from someone who has had some weird shit happen in their house that can't be explained, stuff that makes it decently clear that someone was in your house that shouldn't be: it's not fun. It's fucking terrifying and this game really bothered me because of it.
This is the first horror game in a while that I actually feel true terror. The way it was executed was perfect, but the fact that you *know* this is realistic and can happen to anyone is terrifying
in all fairness, PC's are still pretty expensive to own and even run for a good amount of people(at least anything that will run games decently), laptops not so much, and iphones have existed for quite awhile.
even old flip phones had the ability to text and they been around since early 2000s also he talked to his friend about playing Mario Kart and my guess is it was implying for the N64 or at the very latest the Gamecube, either way PC's weren't really all that common in most houses around that time
Psychadelicsnake is also pretty good imo. I like his Fatal Frame vids the most. While I love watching mark his playthrough of fatal frame 2 was ... difficult to watch. He didn't take the time to think about the notes or the meaning behind what was happening. (At least as far as I saw he might have later on but I didn't get that far.) But snake has a lot of really good horror content. Some of the older vids might be a bit cringy. And they where made when he had a bad camera. But they're still very entertaining to watch.
Me too. We bought a new house and I was home alone for 3 days after moving in. I swear I slept with a “bed knife” under the mattress for those 3 days 🙈
The true frozen in fear moments Mark had were so accurate to real life, standing in the hall way, to afraid to turn around and to afraid to go forward. Frozen in place as if you’re also frozen in time, waiting for your body to move, or for something to happen. This game was so simple and yet terrifying
In real life, as of my experience, your whole body feels stiff, your whole hair body stands, coldness in your fingertips and feet, adrenaline rushing. Fuck that shit.
the thing that I HATE and is the most scariest thing in "inside the house" horror games is seeing text on the screen saying "It got inside my house." that is the SCARIEST SHIT EVER
no there is deff another thing that makes those games scarier, you already know that what ever is stalking you is already inside the house, so why make info you already know scare you more?
I think Mark forgot or maybe didn't notice that these games are inspired by real events that people have sent in to the developer; part of what makes them so scary is knowing that it happened to someone, it could happen to you, and it's probably happening to others somewhere in the world right now. Be safe, people. -Edit- For some of the people commenting that the stories aren't real or it can't be proven, obviously certain things are changed for the sake of privacy and the threat is made to look like a 'monster' because that's expected in a horror game, but there's also an element of truth in the faceless nature of that threat, because you never know who is going to attack you or what they're going to look like...until they do.
@@Offensive_Username To be honest, these incidents happen all the time... it's not that unusual to get to experience it... Bad/creepy people are everywhere.
This game captured the anxiety and helpless we’ve all been in at one point in our lives. Be it home alone for the first time or just letting your young mind run wild with worst case scenarios. It rlly managed to take me back to that feeling, props man.
it doesn’t help that i always have this feeling, watching this has been a nightmare, no but actually because i’ve had nightmares about this scenario 😇😍😫
This reminds me of a situation from a few years back when I was 19. Was gaming late (as in like 2am-3am) and decided I was thirsty, so I left the office where I'd put my PC, opened the sliding door and just took a step ahead when I heard a thud. Looked ahead properly and here I am, with 5 people I don't know staring back at me. I froze for a second, staring at them, then jumped backwards, closing and locking the sliding door while calling the police and the neighborhood watch. Then they scramble and are out of the window (which they'd completely removed) and were gone in seconds. I was never so freaked out in my life. Turns out the cleaning lady we'd hired had been part of a group where she'd loosen windows so these people could completely remove the glass while the home owners are either out or asleep, then they come in quietly and rob the place. They'd even taken my dad's phones from right next to his head on the bedside table... he's terrified to even think what could have happened had he woken up. We got lucky that I got thirsty when I did, it stopped them from stealing more, but it's still a terrifying thought that all that happened and he never woke up. I heard nothing at all... just walked in from gaming to see 5 unfamiliar faces in my kitchen in the dark.
a colleague of mine had a similar experience this month, her electronic cat flap had broke and wouldn't let the cats back inside, and she noticed when she got up in the night to use the bathroom that there was only one cat inside, s she went to check if the other was outside wanting to be let in and she opened the door to two guys trying to pick her lock... they ran sharpish when she screamed
Wooo yeaaa! Insomniac gamers unite! No seriously though in this day and age being nocturnal is just so much better because of stuff like that. I'd rather be awake and afraid than be caught dead asleep.
The most terrifying part of this entire game is the attention to detail that is given to the house. The fact that they made it look like a real house as much as they could makes the experience far more visceral
I do wanna know where the bathroom is tho. I don't think I've seen anyone go into it, if it exists. But yes, realism and attention to detail are some of the most important things in game immersion.
@Mister DCUniverses i mean i don't think the one telling the story described their house to perfection or gave pictures. it was posted on reddit so the person wouldn't doxx themself. the more likely thing is they talk about like "i went next door to eat the lasagna in front of the TV" or something and then the one who made the game made the house based on that, filling any empty spaces in the narration themself.
@@friendbreakfast The story isn't from reddit, they're submitted directly to the developers. I doubt they'd have given out that kinda personal information.

@omg im in the matrix Good for you, but imo this game does well in terms of giving you a sense of real dread. The music, the atmosphere all plays well to give you a gut wrenching feeling.

I’m about to turn 18 and now live in one of the safest and most crime free cities in the world, but until I was 12 I lived in a crime capital and felt endangered every day…while the town had its nice quirks, I would never go back by choice.
Gods, that game pressed every damned button I have about being home alone, aside from compulsively checking whether all the doors in the house are closed and/or locked
I used to dog sit for cash and I never had any bad experiences but once I watched a old couple dogs bs sweet and the dogs were nice but the house is sketchy at night and they had a huge window on the front and back of the house I couldn’t be in the living room without feeling stared at. The house was very quiet and the neighborhood was always pitch black
And even when you're not! I know so many people who leave all their doors and windows unlocked ALL the time, and that isn't safe. Especially when they talk about it loudly in public.
@@scrithen2836 Salty and sweet. Whether or not you like it personally, it's a classic combo. I'd also add the contrast of the hot, crispy fries with the cold, soft frosty is a draw too.
This is literally one of my worst fears. I once caught a man peeking into a window of our house and thankfully my husband was able to chase him off, but seeing -eyes- lit up by the reflection of the tv at 11pm was absolutely terrifying. I can’t imagine what an actual home invasion is like.
Its things like this that make me want to install Motion Perimeter Lights, but theres so much wildlife where i live that they would constantly activate.
@@captainchet7926 we live in a different place now, but installed motion activated cameras anyway, and yes, most of the alerts are either cars driving by, a bug on the lens, or a stray cat. Still, it’s a good thing to have, I just hope we’ll never need it for evidence or anything.
Happened to me quite recently. We have a big window in our TV room and I was watching TV in my (fairly skimpy) nightclothes and I suddenly heard a creaking noise like feet on the porch. I look behind me and there's a pair of eyes staring right back at me. Never been so scared in my life
The premise is so basic and unoriginal yet it is executed so perfectly, along with the fact that this can and does happen to people in real life makes it so much more scary. The unsettling atmosphere couldn’t have been done better imo. This terrified me more than most of the big blockbuster supernatural horror games.
I would say it’s simplicity is what makes it unique - it doesn’t need any massive lore drops, it’s just a horrifying experience which could happen to anyone, as it’s the most realistic type of horror as it’s actually plausible
@@manio_e If I'm not mistaken, that's sort of what fears to fathom is about. It's in the name of the game, "fears to fathom" is about presenting to us real fears for us to understand.
Most definitely this. I love the execution of atmosphere in this game with the other people you can see starting with just people walking by on the street to someone just standing in your driveway, then someone just hanging out on your porch. I also think the simplicity on the models of people does a good job adding atmosphere, it reminds of those other horror games that use graphics that would be compared to a Playstation 1 game.

Back in the day, if you can believe it, a lot of people had cellphones but not computers. I didn't get my first computer until I was in college, but I got my first cellphone at 16.
this happened not long ago my family never uses the front door to our house, unless guests are coming. we have a sliding glass back door and the solid normal front door. we have two garages, a smaller one and a bigger one. we use the bigger one to get in and out of the house and at times we are forgetful to close the garage door afterwards. this obviously was very dangerous because someone could just walk in, seeing that we keep the door that LEADS to the garage unlocked. i woke up in the house all alone one morning and my parents had left me a note saying theyd gone out for a few hours. something felt off so i checked all around the house. turns out the garage door was left open and my parents forgot to close it when they left. fortunately, no one got in the house, but i remember the fear sinking in when i saw the open door and realized i could possibly be in trouble.
I came home from my girlfriends house at like 11:30 on my bike and my garage door was half open half closed like stuck. It didnt close fully when I left and my door that leads to the garage was also unlocked. I was home alone and it was the most scared I've ever been.
This game comes off as so simple yet the atmosphere is so terrifying which is something that I don’t feel a lot with the horror games mark usually plays
Fun fact the Fear To Fathom episodes are based on true stories. Also I could never sleep in a room in which you couldn’t see the door from your bed. My soul would leave my body at every sound. Anyways, I know no one asked but I have a home alone story for y’all. Okay so this happened I’d say about a month or two after my family and I had moved into a new house. This house had, and I kid you not, a mile long driveway. It is in the middle of the woods with no neighbors. I was around 12 or 13 when this happened. I was sitting in my room while my sister, brother, and parents were all out running errands. It was currently 8 PM and they left at 6 PM, so I was hoping they were going to be home any minute, when my two dogs started barking. I was confused so I looked out the window to see a black figure with a flashlight emerging from the woods. My heart skipped a fucking beat. I grabbed my dogs and put them inside with me, locked my doors and windows, grabbed my knife, because why not, and ran into our “secret” room, which was in my brothers closet. One of the walls pushed out and there was a fairly sized room there which the old owners probably illegally grew drugs in but none of my business. My dogs were very stressed but I gave them beef jerky to distract them. Mind you, they are both over 90 pounds. Someone knocked on the door so I texted my mom about what was happening, but my phone had no service. I heard like digging in the front yard? You know when you have a shovel and you stick it in the ground and pull it out? Yeah, that. Anyway, my parents got home about 45 minutes later of me sweating and freezing at every sound. We checked the ring camera and it was a hooded drunk man who had escaped jail and was running through the woods. He buried a fork in our front yard, and left. Scariest moment in my life
There actually is an episode of The Garfield Show where Jon forgets the keys to his house and tries to break in, while Garfield and Odie are scared for their lives.
(Each time stamp is 1-3 seconds before the jumpscare) 10:23 (Major) Jumpscare from man at the door 16:15 (Minor) Man at the window 17:08 (Minor) Sound of glass shattering from the man breaking in through the window 19:06 (Minor) Intruder opens a door in the house, causing Mark to yell
Having watched Jack's Playthrough of this already has me pre-anxious, especially since being home alone with the thought of an intruder is already one of my biggest fears
Jack: scared cinnamon roll, only opens the door at the end and loses the game Mark: fucking chad, scared of no man, beast, or scp, opens the door and brazenly walks out to confront them only for them to not exist at the moment Also mark: does exact same thing jack did and dies
My childhood home had the light switches for the upstairs hallway at the bottom of the stairs and on the far end of the hallway. My room was, of course, in the middle and those walks in the dark to the switch always freaked me out.
I totally understand having a fear of the dark as a child. I remember when I was little, E.T. had just came out and I saw it in the theatre with my family and I was scared of the dark for a long time after that, always would think I was seeing something scary in the dark. One time after that I remember walking back to my room in the dark and there was one of my baby brother's onesie hanging on the closet door facing down the hallway and I was terrified by it. I guess I saw it as a person hanging there and was freaked out. I don't remember much from my young childhood but I remember all the lovely traumatizing stuff. 😐E.T. was like a horror movie to me back then, I'm still kind of creeped out by that alien.
@@xariotatriox6284 Understandable, I don't remember E.T. to be honest. I do remember a lot of weird stuff happened around my neighborhood though, like people moving out on mass, and this weird humming being heard from deep in the woods. One day I decided to check it out, it was pretty scary. Maybe one day I'll make a horror game with my house/neighborhood as the setting. It'd make a really good atmospheric horror game at least. I'm obsessed with horror games and movies now, likely because of all the stuff thats happened here. Sorry for my tangent.
I must agree with Mark. This game was very unnerving. It established the setting well and gave you comfort and slowly took it away by making you guess what can happen, but never telling you when or if. Long story short, you kinda understood what the danger was, but had you guessing what was safe and what wasn't.
I'm home alone while watching this and wow my anxiety has rocketed I instantly went and checked every door and window and made sure I had something to defend myself with haha
"Stanger whith unknown motives is inside your house with you" is one of my absolute worst fear and I just signed up to possibly get an apartment in the next 6 months so I'm looking forward to this coming back to me as I spend my first night living alone 😆
Hey if that can be of any reassurance, it's ok really, if living alone really terrifies you a lot you can still get a roommate , a smaller appartement or just live next to friends, it takes about a week or so to get used to but an appartement is wayy less scary than a house
I feel that on a spiritual level. I could never live in an actual house. The idea of someone sneaking in is the most terrifying thing. My whole life I lived in apartments and most of my life it was one on the last floor but even still, I was often scared when home alone at night. Now I live with just my brother and dog in a small apartment on the ground floor so technically it should be more scary but I actually feel very safe here. All our windows have outside metal blinds and our front door automatically locks itself whenever you open and close it so we gotta carry keys whenever we go out. So there's no way for someone to open the door from the outside without keys. And I really love that since I'm home alone most of the time. I'd say it's the best thing to get. I think you can buy one of those self locking locks online or at a store. They're so secure. It completely changes the game for me.
@@PapaLitka You know, other countries than USA don't really allow you to just go into a grocery store and come out with an AK-47 or something xd Most of us just have to do with actual door locks and a kitchen knife to protect our homes.
These stories are as scary as they are because they're real and can happen to anyone. I think we've all felt this way at least once in our lives. I started getting scared of strangers hurting me in my home when I was 11. Because at Halloween that year 2 men wearing ghost face masks knocked on one of my neighbours door when she was home alone. They didn't speak but she thought they were coworkers pranking her so she promised them candy and went to the kitchen to get some. When she did they threw in molotov cocktails and left. She survived but her house burned down. She nor her boyfriend had any enemies so noone knew why they did it. They never got caught either. My neighbour naturally didn't feel safe in our community anymore so she and her bf moved far away. That happened in 2001. I started locking the front door when I was home alone after that incident.

I think the reason this is scary to us humans is because we are hardwired to think that "home safe" so when something comes in that may be dangerous it's less expected and more scary
we are programed that way but its a false sense cuz I'm not too worried about stuff like that on a normal basis but a year before I moved in with my father and sister they actually had someone come in a few days before Christmas(they never locked doors cuz oh, stuff like that doesn't happen around here) and since then they changed the locks and have been adamant about locking the doors at night when the last person is done and goes up to bed, tho it annoys me having to lock the door, but I wouldn't want to be stuck in a situation like my sister, she had woken up to the noises of the intruder and though it was our father coughing and rolling around in his room a couple doors down, and if she had gotten up for any reason she would have come face to face with the intruder, now I'm not quite as afraid of those situations because I have a bow, 10 knifes and 2 swords stashed in my room and down by my desk in our living room and I know how to use them nor do I have qualms about hurting someone on my own property if I feel threatened tho I wont say it wouldnt take me a lot to psych myself up to leaving my room with my weapons because you never know beforehand if the guy has any weapons ie gun or not and I cant say I wouldnt be scared after the fact like my sister now is

i like how the mother gave misleading advice and it was up to the player to make the decision to stay under the bed instead of going out of his room. just felt more realistic and spooky that way, unlike most horror games where the guides or wtv holds your hand through the game
i think another thing that adds to the realism of this horror game and why this game is so scary is that the main character is simply a *normal guy*. in most mainstream horror games, the charcter you play is some giga chad who is an expert at firearms and crafting, and is not afarid to enter a clearly dangerous house. the characters in these scenarios are all realistic and relatbale in terms of their situation, making the experience more immersive.

The helplessness factor is very important in horror games, it's what made Amnesia stand out so much back in the day. Nothing to defend yourself with.

I think Mark forgot or maybe didn't notice that these games are inspired by real events that people have sent in to the developer; part of what makes them so scary is knowing that it happened to someone, it could happen to you, and it's probably happening to others somewhere in the world right now. Be safe, people.
-Edit- For some of the people commenting that the stories aren't real or it can't be proven, obviously certain things are changed for the sake of privacy and the threat is made to look like a 'monster' because that's expected in a horror game, but there's also an element of truth in the faceless nature of that threat, because you never know who is going to attack you or what they're going to look like...until they do.

it doesn’t help that i always have this feeling, watching this has been a nightmare, no but actually because i’ve had nightmares about this scenario 😇😍😫
No fucking thank you

Wooo yeaaa! Insomniac gamers unite! No seriously though in this day and age being nocturnal is just so much better because of stuff like that. I'd rather be awake and afraid than be caught dead asleep.
This game already scared me- but mark just blatantly opening doors in a dark house was terrifying
I love Mark immediately thinking of his bed knife when faced with this situation. Really shows how that absolutely, 100% is not a joke for him.
@Mister DCUniverses i mean i don't think the one telling the story described their house to perfection or gave pictures. it was posted on reddit so the person wouldn't doxx themself. the more likely thing is they talk about like "i went next door to eat the lasagna in front of the TV" or something and then the one who made the game made the house based on that, filling any empty spaces in the narration themself.

yeah i watched someone else play this before, cant remember if it was jack or gab, but i watched it at my computer and it was a bit scary but nothing too bad. then i watch mark play it, arguably less scary and more funny overall, but i watched it in bed at like 2 am. the atmosphere was anxiety inducing. way scarier. which is why i love watching horror stuff for bedtime. its the only time its scary to me anymore

I came from the future to say that people like you are heroes. I got some heart problems and anxiety, but I also love watching Mark playing horror games.
People seem to be missing that fact that there is a person going up the stairs, while he sits and eats lasagna....
The fear in this episode was so visceral because I, as a kid, imagined this scenario SO many times.
For real, I’ve been left home alone multiple times and I’ve always feared someone would break in.
It’s Sunday night, so I’ll be fine. Oh btw it’s also 8:38pm right now and I just woke up from a nap five minutes earlier.
I’m about to turn 18 and now live in one of the safest and most crime free cities in the world, but until I was 12 I lived in a crime capital and felt endangered every day…while the town had its nice quirks, I would never go back by choice.
Broooo I still feel this as an adult 😭😳
I would put my phone under my pillow when sleeping just in case someone broke in and took all our phones
The house was very quiet and the neighborhood was always pitch black
i swear i’d lock myself in my room and stack junkfood and chips and not come out for 2 days.
One thing I love about this game is how the person always exists somewhere, actually doing things, so you can catch them if you look
Neat.

I also think the simplicity on the models of people does a good job adding atmosphere, it reminds of those other horror games that use graphics that would be compared to a Playstation 1 game.

my family never uses the front door to our house, unless guests are coming. we have a sliding glass back door and the solid normal front door. we have two garages, a smaller one and a bigger one. we use the bigger one to get in and out of the house and at times we are forgetful to close the garage door afterwards. this obviously was very dangerous because someone could just walk in, seeing that we keep the door that LEADS to the garage unlocked. i woke up in the house all alone one morning and my parents had left me a note saying theyd gone out for a few hours. something felt off so i checked all around the house. turns out the garage door was left open and my parents forgot to close it when they left. fortunately, no one got in the house, but i remember the fear sinking in when i saw the open door and realized i could possibly be in trouble.

@@HumanPerson_final That is terrifying. Wonder why It was set up like that.

I must agree with Mark. This game was very unnerving. It established the setting well and gave you comfort and slowly took it away by making you guess what can happen, but never telling you when or if. Long story short, you kinda understood what the danger was, but had you guessing what was safe and what wasn't.
Well said 👏🏻
I'm home alone while watching this and wow my anxiety has rocketed I instantly went and checked every door and window and made sure I had something to defend myself with haha
This really shows that even real life situations like this can be just as scary, if not scarier than exaggerated fictional ones.
You can get a door security bar to wedge under the door handle! They should be on Amazon, but hardware stores sometimes carry them, too
I feel that on a spiritual level.
