Dude this is absolutely insane, I'm blown away! Here I am a week before christmas thinking to myself, "hmm, I'll go find some nice chord-melody jazz christmas songs to learn real quick just for the christmas season" then finding this and quickly realizing that'll it will be NEXT christmas before I can have this nailed down like you haha. Excellent job, man. I would be super interested in learning more about your process for how you go about arranging a song like this!
Thank you so much! I'm really glad you enjoyed this. I've been considering making a walkthrough of this arrangement, but it is kind of a doozy. I will say that I just combined a couple of my favorite versions of the tune and worked it out on guitar. The main part basically uses Nat King Cole's changes - they lay very nicely on guitar. The ending, believe it or not, is from a Barry Manilow version, lol. People make fun of me for digging Barry but his arrangers are top-notch, and this one uses some really nice reharms. Hope that sheds some light on what I'm doing here. Thanks again!
@@jjthomchickmusic I gotcha! Looks like I need to start studying reharms; that's an area I have yet to dive into. As I have sorta developed more as a guitarist, comping during other instrument solos has become as fun to me as playing a lead solo myself (feels like a fun challenge/puzzle to follow the lead player and compliment what they're playing), so I'm trying to get better at all that stuff so I can add more to my rhythmic bag of tricks lol. Do you find yourself processing those crazy chords by thinking of each note that makes up a particular chord and playing it that way (like a pianist might do, which would also explain some of those far-from-standard guitar chord fingerings that you're doing at times), or do you see them more like chord shapes that you know how to work up and down the fretboard? Obviously there are chords like a maj7 that have pretty "mainstream" chord shapes that many guitarists know, but for those reharms I have to imagine that you did just brute force getting those wild fingerings down? Cool stuff!
@@jjthomchickmusic I finished your version of Joe Pass' White Christmas and I'm thinking I'm learning this one next. Too bad I won't have this one nailed down by this Christmas. Merry Christmas in advance man
@@bbgrey4828 I’d be honored if you learned my arrangement, and would be happy to walk you through it if you’re ever interested. Hope you had a Merry Christmas & happy new year!
Just perusing through some RUclips Xmas songs and stumbled across your rendition. Wow and wow, amazing, your ad libs in between your chords are just the filler needed to bring the song to the next level, merry Xmas and keep up the great work !
Lovely..would loved to see it done as the accompaniment to Nat King Co;e on the last and most beautiful recording in 1961. Just as it was done on that recording.
@@jjthomchickmusic Yes I could tell. It's beautiful.Thank you for posting.I think a lesson on how to do the guitar as on the recording would be well sought after and obvioussly you are dancing rings around that fundamental recording.Either way I will enjoy learning from it.Many thanks.: )

IMHO, this is the most melodic version on RUclips, anywhere for that matter. I can listen to this over and over.
Thank you so much, I hope you continue to enjoy it year after year!
I listened to this again today. My wife heard it and said “who is that-it sounds like Joe Pass.” That’s quite a compliment from her.
Your wife knows Joe Pass? She's a keeper! Thanks so much!!
Smoothest chord melody arrangement I could find! Awesome single note lines too! Will be studying it
Thank you so much! I'm honored!
MINDBLOWING!!! You have a great gift. Thank you for sharing
My pleasure, so glad you enjoyed it!
The line at 0:51 gets me every time I listen. Great arrangement!
Yeah, I was patting myself on the back after that one, haha. Thanks for listening!
