If they wanted to go to historical character angle for the main protagonist, there were plenty of Japanese samurai’s with a good amount of history that they could’ve used. They would never do that if the game took place in Africa so why is this ok? It also didn’t help that the consultants they hired from sweet baby Inc. didn’t have good consultants when it came to Japanese culture. Tori Gates in front of every city and village when they’re meant for shrines, the one piece Zorro sword is another one lol, lets not forget about the half blown Torii gate statue they were selling with the assassins on top of them. That half blown torii gate represents the nuclear disaster that happened in Japan from the nukes. Ya guys wanted to play as a dude, big surprise. This is my conspiracy theory: because Star Wars Outlaws sold poorly they made the decision to delay Shadows to February so Outlaws has the opportunity to be the Holiday game for Ubisoft. my (lite) evidence to this is Star Wars: Outlaws launches on steam in November and has its first DLC update in November around the same time Shadows was to launch.
Yasuke’s samurai status has been widely disproven at this point. Even so, whenever Yasuke did appear as a samurai in various forms of media prior, there was virtually no controversy. Why? Because it wasn’t advertised as anything more than what it was. Fiction. People loved Afro Samurai as well. It's not so much so that people want it to be historically accurate, rather Ubisoft is pitching it as being historically accurate, citing their "historical experts". However when you dig into said historical experts you find that they are either not even credible in the first place, or are clearly biased and have something to gain from the editing/commercialization of Yasuke's story. Resulting in Ubisoft switching up and now claiming fiction. Essentially they are playing both sides, while literally attempting to change Japanese history to sell their game. Throw in all the other embarrassing mistakes like adding Chinese elements to a Japanese setting, yoinking anime merch as official promo material, getting seasons wrong, the out of place hip hop music, the flag drama, getting clan symbols wrong, the ai allegations, the bot usage, the disingenuous apology to Japan, the very insensitive Torii gate statue, etc. At best for Ubisoft just shows the utter lazy nature of their research and development, at worst displays a blatant disrespect and racism for the Japanese. Particularly towards the men. Already took Ubisoft forever to finally pivot to East Asia even with the constant interest from fans, only to focus on Yasuke. One could easily conclude to think they simply hate Asian men, especially from a strong protagonist stand point. Very Hollywood of them. Yes, there are a loud minority of racist trolls out there, but most of the controversy is valid, and comes from a genuine place.

I'm really hopeful that the delay is to give them a couple months to polish the game up, cuz Outlaws came out at least 3 months under-cooked. That being said, they couldn't have picked a worse release date, cuz this is now dropping in the same 2-week timeframe as Avowed, Monster Hunter: Wilds, and Like A Dragon: Pirate Yakuza. I don't see ANY of the people looking forward for those games going for Assassin's Creed instead.
The delay is because the Japanese hate them and the game. Especially after the Tori Gate atom bomb fiasco they just pulled. Ubishit has never given a shit about releasing a polished game. They were ready to sell this shit for the holiday season. Only reason they pulled out is because the pre order numbers are low

As a someone who's part japanese, can't help but feel that AC shadows is kind of disrespectful to japanese culture, even if that wasn't their intention. All other AC games have had a fictional main character that is the ethnicity of the country it's based in. AC shadows is the first time they actually went with a historical figure, which is fine, but idk why they decided to go with Yasuke instead of the thousands of other legendary samurai that they could choose from. On top of that, historcal records don't make it clear if Yasuke even was a samurai. To me it to just feels like they saw the opportunity to use a black protagonist and took it. And as a someone who's asian in America, sepcifically as an Asian male, we rarely get representation in western media at least in comparison to black representation in wester media, so it kinda feels like we were taken away that spot to be represented in this game about our own culture. Do we not deserve to be represented too? Don't get me wrong, i don't just hate him for being black, it just feel like it's kinda slap in the face to me. TBH if they make Nobunaga a villain, Japanese people will probably be in an uproar over that. Nobunaga is one of the most famous and well-loved historical figures in Japan. Like, he's basically deified. He's generally considered a more heroic figure from what I've seen. I'm hoping that speculation is wrong, for everyone's sake...
I don't think so. We already have game like Onimusha and Sengoku Basara where Nobunaga is the villain. Even some show like Kamen Rider also has Nobunaga as a villain. All this make by Japanese themself. As I recall, Nobunaga is seeing as the "Great Man" and a "Powerful Leader", that all. The heroic one usuallt goes to his successor Hideyoshi where Hideyoshi is the one who manage to unify the land during that period. And even Hideyoshi is portrait as villain in Onimusha and Sengoku Basara
@@shawziiz5031 Nobunaga is definitely more popular than any other historical figures, even Hideyoshi. He's seen as the one who changed Japan, he gets labeled as the unifier of Japan heavily because he was a massive reason Hideyoshi/Ieyasu ever saw a unified Japan, paved the way for Japan's increasing industrialization, amongst others. He IS the face of Japan's history. I think you severely underestimate just how much Japanese people love Nobunaga, but it's hard to grasp without speaking the language and visiting historical sites. While you are correct, it's one thing for the Japanese people to villainize beloved historical figures and another for foreigners to do so. It's a more sensitive cultural topic to tip-toe around.

I never liked Assassin's Creed but the idea of Yasuke and a Kunoichi sounds interesting. It's precisely Yasuke's history stopping at Honno-Ji, leaving a massive blank slate, that makes him an interesting choice. Assassin's Creed, from the very first game (the only one I played), was obviously fictional history; a figure like Yasuke fits fictional history perfectly then. Having the contrast of a samurai, and one that stands out massively, to a ninja in an assassin/stealth game is also interesting. Was Yasuke picked for pandering reasons? We literally don't know. I wonder if we weren't in the cultural environment we are in, would people have been more receptive to him because of the above two reasons.
Yes. Yes he was. Given that every other AC protag was an OC and native to the region the game was set it. Yet when they finally get to the long awaited Japanese AC, the protag is the singular black guy that was in the country during this time period.
The same people that are complaining about Yasuke are the same people that go around saying Ancient Egypt was not a black civilisation despite all the proof that exists. They simply don't want to see any black person in a space where they feel they don't belong or at least not be portrait in a positive way
My whole thing with the pandering issue is like you said: this narrative has been done before. My question is why is this pandering but Nioh or Shogun isn’t?
Because it’s weird as fuck. You’re playing a black guy murdering a bunch of Japanese people. If it was a white guy slaying a bunch of Africans in a African AC game there would be no end to the public outrage But because it’s Asian people it’s ok ? Not to mention Ubisoft has shown their disdain for the Japanese people time and time again with this game. They touted this game as historicaly accurate yet the architecture in the game is from China not Japan. They stole assets without permission like Zoro’s sword from One Piece. Now they release figure showing a broken Tori Gate to remind all the Japanese of the atomic bomb. You can’t make this shit up
Having a fish out of water, tall brute and a nimble series accurate assassin literally sounds like a good idea and gameplay looked decent, idk why people made it such a big issue. My only concern was if they make it a Valhalla like 100 hr grindfest but now since Ghost of Yotei is revealed and is coming the same year I'll obviously ignore this game in favour of ghost because it's way more promising and is being followed by a way more interesting game.

It wouldn’t be such a big deal if the people behind it weren’t such agenda driven people. The best DEI is when you don’t notice it, when it’s organic instead of forced. Video games had no problems having male protagonist and female protagonist before, but ever since DEI became a prominent thing, it seems masculinity in video games has been pushed further back while increasing the amount of female protagonist have rapidly increased.

@@adamb.m4844
It’s not historical but it uses history like the Mongolian invasion and such. AC steeps itself far more in history which is why it’s held to a higher standard when it comes to history.
Im currently about 85% through Prince of Persia Lost Crown, and its so frustrating... because its the best Metroidvania ive played. Genuinely.
Better than Metroid Dread, better than Hollow Knight, unironically, HK has a "vibe" and was surprising, but Lost Crown is just so fuckin good and polished...
Thats what Ubisoft CAN do. They can do that. They have the capacity to release a "Best in Genre" title, but they just engage in the worst business practices and sloppy dev cycles in the AAA industry. Its so weird.
Good takes.
You didn't have a problem with Nioh or Scarlett Johansson playing the main character in the Ghost in the Shell movie..So that means any video game or movie that has hip-hop music in it is disrespectful to black people

*if Ubisoft was wise, they'd merge AC and Watch Dogs into one franchise 👌 finish up that 20 year old storyline and have Aiden, Marcus and Clara as the main trio going forward. there's so many great things they can do with all their franchises but its just not being done for some reason* 👎
If they make the Ultimate Edition like $70, I'll buy thr game day 1. I don't go to Video Games for a story. If there's a great story, that's cool. But I go for Gameplay. @@tangiblemammal5273nah. He's just not stupid and insane to fall under the rabbit hole of both woke and anti woke grifters.
They are hoping the heat will die down in Feb when they can use black history month to call every one racist and bigots.
Make no mistake everything is calculated. Ubishit has never given a shit about releasing a polished game.
They were ready to sell this shit for the holiday season. Only reason they pulled out is because the pre order numbers are low
This is why you dont shit on an entire countries history and culture while claiming youre doing it for them. Ubisoft brought all this misfortune on themselves and deserve no pity.

I don't want to get too much into it, but it also seems like ubisoft is either ignorant and/or just didn't do their research properly on japanese culture cuz they get so many of the details, small and large, wrong about japanese culture. I think the half tori gate is the most obvious one.

Odds are the pre-order sales are worse than Star Wars Outlaws for Ubisoft to delay the game out of the blue. Based off social media interaction and views, i dont believe Star Wars sold very well. Especially when Ubisoft CEO says the game sold "Softer" then expected. You have to read within between the lines.

@@SenkaZver Doesn't matter. Nobunaga has been done as a villain many times already, by Japanese themselves. So it won't be an issue if here. AC Shadows is just mess up to begin with
I hope Ubisoft cancels it. The amount of disrespect to Japanese culture the devs shown is apalling.
idk bro having a hip-hop song when Yasuke is fighting is pretty clear that it's pondering if you don't see that you're blind also it's fine if it's just one mistake but if it becomes multiple BS then you can clearly connect the dots

They simply don't want to see any black person in a space where they feel they don't belong or at least not be portrait in a positive way
Facts I agree with you 💯🎯 and I was saying the same exact thing 😂
Why do we need a black samurai wouldn't it make more sense to make a assassin's creed game in Egypt oh shi they done it already full of arabs😂
I’m gonna play the game regardless and getting the gold edition at launch
My whole thing with the pandering issue is like you said: this narrative has been done before. My question is why is this pandering but Nioh or Shogun isn’t?
Because it’s weird as fuck. You’re playing a black guy murdering a bunch of Japanese people.
If it was a white guy slaying a bunch of Africans in a African AC game there would be no end to the public outrage
But because it’s Asian people it’s ok ?
Not to mention Ubisoft has shown their disdain for the Japanese people time and time again with this game.
They touted this game as historicaly accurate yet the architecture in the game is from China not Japan. They stole assets without permission like Zoro’s sword from One Piece.
Now they release figure showing a broken Tori Gate to remind all the Japanese of the atomic bomb.
You can’t make this shit up
Ppl just racists, just admit it bro lol
Ya all of you are racist against the Japanese.
They don’t like the game but yet you guys are trying to force this Yasuke shit upon them
Having a fish out of water, tall brute and a nimble series accurate assassin literally sounds like a good idea and gameplay looked decent, idk why people made it such a big issue. My only concern was if they make it a Valhalla like 100 hr grindfest but now since Ghost of Yotei is revealed and is coming the same year I'll obviously ignore this game in favour of ghost because it's way more promising and is being followed by a way more interesting game.
