- Florida is one of the most dangerous states for pilots when it comes to laser strike attacks on aircraft. According to the FAA, the Sunshine State ranks third for the number of laser incidents reported this year.
Lasers can cause temporary or even permanent vision damage and it’s not something law enforcement takes lightly.

Horrifying that this happens to pilots, but its also amazing how fast they find the person who did the lasering. Ik the laser is basically just a big beacon pointing to your location, but still.
It's okay to do it to law enforcement, because they are shady.

Super simple look in the direction they're pointing from. Turn on thermal cameras expose their locations. Note it down. Have someone on the ground arrest them. You're basically saying hey look at me when you do that.

Doing that with a laser to pilots is actually a felony.
Did you know in most modern European countries and Canada, the crime is so serious that you get a $100,000 fine and 5 years in prison if you are caught and convicted.

This title is misleading. This video doesn't tell how pilots help police track down laser-strike suspects at all! It tells of the dangers, how the police use cameras to find suspects, and that it's a federal crime, but it never tells how pilots help the police track suspects down, as the title suggests.

The worst part is, pilots by their profession can't wear glasses that may have special coatings in hopes of protecting their eyes such as polarizing lenses. The reason is most LCD multi function displays become unreadable or appear blank when you look at them.
Seriously, my glasses are polarized and people always think I’m dumb when I have to lean a certain way to see the television screen when I have them on.
I don’t see why airplane manufacturers can’t just use eink displays instead of LCD. I don’t think airbus is going to be bankrupted by the extra $50.
@@yb6036 A few notes: the original post is wrong. Displays can use circular polarizers as cell phones do. This provides viewability at all angles. OLED displays do not need polarizers, but use them to increase contrast and protect against UV. Eink is not suitable due to lack of contrast, response, and color. Finally, pilots can protect their vision and cut through the laser flare using multialkaline night vision binoculars.

@@Nexalian_Gamer goggles aren't optical devices. No external light makes it to the eye. You can also add a filter which reflects green.

There was a video a long time ago where the chopper hovered over the backyard of some kids layering the chopper. The cops indeed showed up at their door.
Ok, so they have a picture of a dark figure in a location and unless they have proof it was actually them, good luck identifying them it was truly them in court. Otherwise, someone could just stand by your house and laser pilots and then duck out and you get the blame becuse they were by your house

I think good reporting would have included exactly who has been caught doing this. Is there a demographic that is inclined to this behavior? Is it mostly kids or suburban soccer moms or what?

This isn’t a local police issue… you go to federal prison for this, and you get more time than robbing a corner store.
That's understandable, because every time they do that, they are committing attempted murder. Why else would anyone want to blind a pilot? I say the penalties for this are too lenient. 5 years for trying to cause a pilot to crash? Should be a minimum of 25.

No cell phone and no one near by for miles and you only have a laser pointer and a high powered flashlight.

And
Below HELICOPTER aiming = POLICE needed.

I was running from the cops and their helicopter but after seeing this I shined my high power laser at the chopper. They left and I made my escape

Glasses that do that are illegal to be worn while piloting. They are called "polarized"

@@jamesc5968 A German university is conducting research in this area. Unfortunately, the foil cannot cover all laser light frequencies. In addition, the foil is rejected by many pilots because it makes the night even darker.

Why don't they make it a law for lasers of a certain strength to be polarized on a particular axis. Than polarized glass could be used to help mitigate the threat. Even better if a design is implemented to keep the laser at the same axis despite the devices movement.
I’m pretty sure they do it cause they can see the light scatter on something shiny from far away, naturally you wanna see how far you can illuminate something but I don’t doubt there’s people out there set on being disruptive or trying to disturb pilots because they are low life type people.
If they do it to airliners carrying passengers then the people pointing the lasers should be treated as terrorists. Imagine being so evil(or dangerously stupid) that you casually risk the lives of dozens of innocent people for fun.

You only own the air space above your actual property. Also your property goes down as deep as you want to go. So up and down is legal over your property. Post signs “Laser in use planes use caution” makes it legal. Above my house is my air space you must pay a $880 No laser fee to cross my air space same goes with below my property thats also has a $880000 fee.

Heres the issue using thermal and other surveillance equipment on the helicopter...they are searching peoples houses and yards without a warrant. They are mass surveilling. This is also done in other ways.

I have noticed as a passenger that this happens far more often in areas with higher levels poor people or unemployed people with nothing better to do. The worst I have seen is flying into Mexico City. Our aircraft must have been hit by at least 5 or 6 different green lasers on the left side of the aircraft that I could see during the last 3 minutes of our flight in.
