      yeah that explains a lot, i hate that bug, so the only way out of that is to relog after each time you fire your weapon, problem is on most servers this is not allowed & will get you killed or banned for combat logging, also Queue times will be horrendous, even more so with priority purchase in the way of non priority access to servers

      There is another reason for ghost bullets. There was desync more earlier in topes stream ( I was lookin at that case from server perspective ) and he had 15 bullets or less in a mag, then he reloaded gun with full mag, but server still thought that he has mag with small amount of bullets. Also server thought that he had that AUG A3 in his hands all the time (he swapped AUG to SVD and still had ghost bullets). His weapon wasnt jammed

      Happens alot in games like siege too.
      In my experience, theres trigger delay, where the gun takes a sec to start shooting.
      Trigger malfunction, where it won't shoot for a few presses.
      Desync caused by player pos, bullet pos, and hitbox pos, jam desync, and cover desync.
      Dayz isn't too bad for this unless you're on a higher population server.

    Ghost bullets have killed more of my team mates then anything else. It's a major problem however there is a 2nd type of ghost bullets that IDK if Wobo mentioned. That is being unable to reload your magazine automatically. A simple fix is to drag the mag manually and it only affects magazine guns. It's gotten so bad whenever we all load in we say "Ghost check." To check for ghost mags.

      I've noticed this only happens to the gun I logged out with in my hands, dropping the gun or loading all mags solves it

    Desync was actually the reason I had quit playing all together a couple years back. On the console version, it would happen any/every time you interacted with a dead players items. It made gunfights absolutely insufferable. If you got a kill, and went over to their body, to loot them, you 100% had to log out, and log back in holding the item you wanted to keep. It would sometimes also happen if you interacted with an item someone else interacted with. The only way to know if you were desync'd or not was to ask your buddy "What do I have in my hands", and if you weren't playing with someone, you'd have to try aiming while crouched with every gun in your inventory, because you couldn't lift your fists while crouched, it would force you to stand up. So you'd put your gun in your hand, crouch and aim with it, if it forced you to stand up, you were desync'd
    Edit:
    The Desync I was referring to, was that the client would essentially have your items in the wrong order in your bag intentory, so you would think you pulled out a gun, but client side, you would actually put out like, rags or something else. It would also very rarely desync for you and the player next to you if you were very close to each other when the desync happened. So sometimes even asking "What do I have in my hands" was not enough.

      After a long time playing on console by now….i had the mag getting stuck inside a weapon that takes mags, where logging out and back in did nothing was brutal!!
      But a few years back it almost never happens thank god. But I did have this ghost bullets happen a good amount of times….but logging back in actually fixed it thank god lol

    Another DeSync issue can easily occur when you switch weapons, making the server believe you are still holding your primary (for example m4) when you switch to your secondary (for example tundra) shortly before falling off a ledge, the server swaps the weapon while the client doesnt. Can only be solved by being tied up or by relogging.

      That's so true. It also occurs when you reload and something cancels the animation (like dropping down real quick)

      Why aren't they fixing this game-breaking bug?
      It's not like they'd have to debug the code for days if we know exactly how it's happening, the client just could resend the current state of your hands and weapons every time you take something in your inventory, switch weapons or drop something. Desync could still be happening but at least it would fix itself when you take anything new in your hands.

      I guess for ghost bullets, the best fix would be that the server respond to the client that he now knows that you unjammed your gun and if the server isn't responding after 1-2 second, send again the packets until the server acknowledge that your gun is unjammed.

    I can explain why this happens:
    There are basically two different ways to send data in the internet.
    TCD and UDP. One of the differences is what happens when a package gets lost. TCP sends the data package again and UDP not. You think, great lets always use TCP and everything is fine. The problem is that it often makes no sence to send a lost data package again. Lets say you have a teams meeting and a package gets lost. When it is send again, the corresponding word you should have hered is already sayed with a little ckack sound in it, because of the missing information. Sending the package again makes no sense.
    The same is when you shoot in a game. When the data package is lost it makes no sence to send it again, because the players position is on a very different location now. This normally leads to a single missing bullet fired and has often no big consequences.
    The problem here in DayZ is that the jamming depends on every single shot fired. If your computer thinks it has fired 50 shots and the server thinks you have shot 40 shots because of a missing data pckage the problems start. Lets say your weapon jams at 50 shots. So your computer sees a jamming weapon and you start to fix the jamming. For the server the jamming never happend and it thinks the fixing of a jamming weapon is wrong and it ignores it.
    Tzhe when you have fixed the jamming (on your computer only) you fire the next shot. Now you have 51 shots on the players computer and 50 and the server. Now the server thinks the weappon is jamming and it does not allow any further shots. The client thinks everything is fine and does not offer the option to fix the jamming.
    Result permanent desync.
    The problem in DayZ is that there aore more consequences of a missing bullet than only the missing bullet. This is a huge mistake in the game design in general and can not be fixed. Except with updating the number of bullets fired in a time based way. For example every 2 seconds. But this increases the network activity and the server load.

      Reload ing is no problem because there is never a shot fired more on the server than on the player sinde. A data package can only be lost, but not created.
      So assume the player has 50 bullets in his magazine. He fires all 50, but a data package gets lost. This means for the server he fired 49 bullets.
      Now the player sees in his side that re shot all 50 bullets and he relaoads. He reload on the server too. For the server he wasted one bullet but this has no further consequences.
      The problem is that the jamming of the gud depend on the exact number of bullets fired. But this is not the case for reloading. It has no bad consequencesd if a data package gets lost. The jamming of the gun has bad consequences for the game if a desync happans.

    I run the largest PVP server on console. Ghost bullets are a major issue in this patch particularly.
    We could provide several hundred clips of ghost bullets from all major calibres & weapons.

    As others have pointed out, one thing that triggers desync is falling/gravity. You can see this happen in the clip at 5:11 , there’s visible bullet impact up until Tope falls off the ledge.
    Same reason why jumping or falling off a ledge seems to fix the hand bug sometimes. It’s almost a guaranteed desync if you fall while interacting with a weapon.

    Thank you for highlighting this serious issue! I hope it gets fixed soon. Logging mid gun fight might get you banned for combat logging on lots of servers and when this is most likely to happen

    Two weeks ago I got the jump on a player in Tisy, sprayed him on the side with an AK-101 for 3-5 bullets before he turned, sprayed me with an ASVAL, knocked me and killed me. In total I put about 5-8 rounds of 5,56 from point blank into him, and he didn't even go knocked since he managed to finish me off instantly. I didn't know of this bug, but that explains things.

    This might not be the key to a fix but some definite insight into the weapon state machine:
    When I was modding my server to have fresh players spawn with a loaded/chambered weapon & backup mags/ammo, there was a bug that when they held 'R' to reload, it wouldn't work the first reload each life. Eventually, after digging for ages I found a fix by modding the 'OnPlayerLoaded' function in the 'PlayerBase' class.. what I did was:
    OnPlayerLoaded > GetItemInHands & FindAttachmentBySlotName (Shoulder, Melee), IF item(s) in any of those slots/hands are a Weapon_Base, cast the weapon(s) and call the function 'ValidateAndRepair'
    I never dug too deep into 'ValidateAndRepair' but it seemed to be a very crucial method when it came to client/server weapon sync.

    Most ghost bullets for me happen after a server restart, so I try to avoid getting into pvp after a restart also most of the time my friends have no gun in their hand or have a sniper that sounds like an M4 or any secondary weapon they hold so when they kill someone with 1 shot to us it sounds like he one shoted someone with m4 or a pistol.
    Honestly I appreciate you making this video, I believe all veteran players are aware of this bug and new players should be as well

    I have seen this happen once on reddit, a guy found a floating person sitting in the air and killed them.
    I experienced this myself recently on a vanilla server.
    On my screen I was sitting in the car and riding along, but on my friends screen I was not.
    Someone was shooting me with 100% accuracy and I thought how is he hitting me as we are racing through the forest.
    We stopped and I got out of the car, I got teleported into the ocean for one frame and then back to where I entered the car, and I saw a guy who joinked all my gear while I was KO standing behind me.

      Cars are about the quickest and surest way to get desync issues, which is what you described, originally the cars were client side and didn't have that specific problem but it caused other issues that players would take advantage of so they moved it server side which brought increased desync, they've made it much better than it was but it still happens occasionally.

    We need to see a duping vid soon! Dubing IMO is the last major exploit making official servers unplayable as compared with community.
    Impossible to stand against duping factions unless you, yourself, turn to the darkside. Its also important because newer players are the most susceptible to the appeal of duping, so the next generation of the dayz community is going to be proliferating it more and more unless we expose it and make it a priority for the devs.

    It does happen with the crossbow. When it occurs it'll play the animation and sound of firing, no bolt comes, and it auto resets to being ready to fire again which of course still doesn't actually shoot anything. So it looks like a semi auto crossbow that doesn't fire anything. I think on the crossbow it happens when you click to load an arrow that was fired too quickly after it started existing (shoot a zombie point blank and spam click to reload). Fixing it simply requires pressing r to remove the bugged bolt and reloading. It's still a desync bug but not quite the same since it isn't a jam causing it. You could in theory fix the jam bug if there was a mechanism to "update" the jam state to the server (unloading the bolt updates the load state of the crossbow and resyncs) but since the only thing that the server is looking for is the unjam action and you unjam an unjammed gun, you have to relog or just give up and go eat some jam.

      I tink it's a different bug. I've seen people reporting this on the tracker soon after crossbows dropped. Now, funny thing is that in the first version of the crossbow patch on experimental, they worked properly in terms of shooting and connecting to target ( hitreg ). there were many other issues, such as bolt positioning on the trees when you hit them, and bolt orientation on impact. not able to retrieve bolts etc... And then the second patch of that experimental totally broke the hitreg , that was also the same patch that introduced penetration for bolts... pretty much the more they try to fix it, more they mess up.. one of the issues was that the bolt you shot and retrieved was still stuck in the target , and if you put it into your hands it would teleport back to the original location...

    Desynced gun / hands was the main reason why i switched rust. So sad to see a great game like this suffering from an issue like this FOR YEARS... I'll rather play someting with an actual competent devs, not having to log off and wait an hour-long queue again almost every second fight cause im desynced.

    theres another type of ghost bullet too, if you double tap too fast in semiauto the second bullet will be a ghost bullet most of the time... cant count how many times ive double tapped a zombie and the second bullet showed a hit but didnt actually register any damage

    What I find often in DayZ is the desync where your client thinks you have nothing in your hands but the server thinks you do. So it won't let you equip anything/ bandages to bandage up, until you relog and lose blood. This occurs often when after fighting zombies with melee weapons.

    WOBO, I made a 3 minute video in your honor, about this topic. Just give it a peek on my channel. “Ghost bullets” are prevalent in at least 2 ways. It’s indisputable and impossible to unsee the issue once you’re aware of it. I believe the 2nd type of ghost bullet derives from a weapon’s RPM. The higher the RPM, the worse the issue gets.

      Why would they employ someone who does all of their testing work for them for free? Us guys have basically been working for free for Bohemia since this game "came out" as a beta version 11 years ago and full version 4 years ago doing all their testing etc for them and it's still not finished yet😂😂😂😂

    I had this happen with a crossbow and it was strange. It would go thru the reloading mechanism but it would only make the motion and sound but wouldn’t cause any damage. Turns out I had to drop all the bolts I had in my inventory, new ones were fine. Ah gotta love DayZ

    there's a weird bug where you have ghost items as well, the server believes there's an item in a certain slot in my inventory but nothing is there, i can't use it and it just looks like an empty slot

    Honestly point blank period from the get go if I hear anything about "Ghost bullets" being an issue in any shooter type game, I genuinely won't touch it at all, or waste a single minute playing it. Because mainly those mechanics shouldn't have a problem in any shooter video game, when that's the main ingredient to a shooter game, is bullet registration, let alone day Z where if you die, your done for good basically. Having a very small chance of spawning close to get your loot back some how one way or the other. If this is always a problem in this game update after update, they shouldn't have released the game at all until that issue was fully solidified and taken care of. I had this crap happen to me too much in the first few months of day Z's console release, and it alone made me lose so much when it was clear I won the fight.

    Weapon jamming is definitely NOT the main reason. There are a variety of issues. A majority of the time when I load into a server I can not reload my gun by holding Y. I have to manually reload. If you were to shoot with the original mag, it wouldn’t work

    This game has grossed over 100 million dollars. It's been out for a decade. Desync and Bohemia have a long history together. Going back as far as Arma 2 and maybe even farther (I never played Arma 1). I find this unacceptable because this isn't some new revelation to Bohemia Inactive. This has been an ongoing problem for them which they refuse to address. A game breaking hand bug caused by desync for 3 years went unfixed while they worked on things like making cooking pots take damage from doing what they do....cook. Bohemia had all of the time in the world, and a 100 million dollar plus warchest to address this problem, and despite how game breaking it is, they flat out refuse to do anything about it.
    On another note. As helpful as this video was, it is mostly correct, but not completely. Revolvers, and double barrel shotguns also suffer from ghost bullets and they are incapable of jamming. I've seen this myself on a half a dozen occasions. I have no doubts that jammed weapons can cause ghost bullets. However I believe that doing anything at all which can cause desync that will result in ghost bullets.
    Bohemia's decision making and lack of common sense is so bad that I wish any other developer had made Day Z. Even EA-loading it up with atrocious live service functions-would have made a more competent and enjoyable game.

    On the console version (ps5) I’ve noticed that the ghost jam never occurs and only the desynchronization ghost bullets will occur. A sure fire way to know if you have these ghost bullets is to initiate a logout before any gunfight. There will be no timer for your logout and you will sit there indefinitely until you close the application. Obviously the reload should result in the fix. It’s very unfortunate that these issues are still in the game

    this bug is the only reason i relog at least once an hour on long play sessions. the longer you play without logging, the higher your chances of getting desynced. if you’re like me and quietly move around the map, and thus can easily survive for hours and hours, by the time you get into unavoidable pvp you’ve almost certainly become desynced at some point and you’ll notice ghost bullets more.

      The problem with having to relog so frequently comes when playing on busy servers with a queue, nobody wants to have to wait for god knows how long to get back into a server every hour lol. This is especially problematic on popular community servers.

    On ps4 ghost bullets are beyond common. Even worse, you can get a ghost gun, which is literally just a gun that exists only on your screen. It got so bad that whenever youd find a rarer gun like an m4 youd have to just log out and hope that when you logged back in that gun was still in your hands. This also meant a guy could have an m4 in his hands, and on your screen he just has his fists out, always fun when a guy raises his fists at you from 50 feet away and you drop dead

    The reason you still see the bullets hit the trees I think is because it's the client side drawing the impacts; its the same reason when you shoot tracers and a friend is watching you shoot, it looks like you're missing your target. (Try shooting gas pump from far away wih a friend and you'll see what I mean.)

    I would guess the desync problem has always been the same for the game, the difference is that DayZ has more players than ever giving a grater sample size to observe the desync hapening.

    I've noticed a bug that happen to me every time I log in.
    Every time I log, I can't quick reload my ak's mag by maintaining 'r' key.
    To counter that bug, every time I log:
    -I take my ak in my hands
    -I drag the mag loaded in the ak to the ground
    -I drag my secondary mag from my backpack to the ground
    -I then replace the mag to the ak slot
    -and I replace the secondary mag to my inventory
    And now I can quick reload my ak my maintaining 'r' key, that has the effect of switching the 2 mags. Quick switching between my 2 mags is useful in combat, but these steps are the only procedure i found to avoid that bug that don't let you switch your mags.
    This bug happens to me every time I log, it is for this reason that I repeat this procedure every time I connect to the game, with my ak and my side pistol, as this bug affects every weapon with an external magazine.
    Fun fact:
    Not only weapons jams!
    My flashlight desynchronized 2 weeks ago.
    I had my flashlight in my hand, a pristine one, with a charged pristine 9V battery.
    On the bottom left window of my screen it was written i could turn off the flashlight by pressing left click, even though it was already turned off.
    I tried removing the battery, drop it on the ground, re-logged, nothing worked, it wouldn't turn on.
    I've tested it, now it works, i don't know why.

    I've had my hands become desynced from attempting to switch weapons but then taking a slight fall off a ledge/down some stairs or something small before the animation is finished. You can no longer switch weapons or drop it or anything and when you attempt to fire you can see your character lunging forward as if they are throwing punches

    One thing I noticed even tho I’m a console player is that when you shot zombies with ghost bullets, they didn’t hear the shot and attack you, so if you shoot and zombies don’t attack you you got ghost bullets

    Welp that explains it. I "hit" low geared player with a three-round burst, center mass last night on Levonia then had to disengage because of zombie aggro. When I got back to the spot where I hit them there was no body. I found some high ground and later detected the same person aggroing zombies all around Lembork.

    Another I got Ghost Arrow when using a crossbow. If you reload and shoot too quickly, you won't hit anything (50% chance might happen) even the arrow doesn't appear. To fix this, you have to wait 2-3 second after reload then you can shoot it so the server able to register properly.

    Another way to desync is when you are mid swapping items in your hands and then you fall off a ledge like a bench, table, rock, box, anything that makes your character jump/stomp and "stop" for roughly half a second when they land. Countless times I've pressed a hotbar key and then immediately did one of those "falls" and then my character is still holding the initial item I meant to swap out, so then I try again, but my character gets "stuck" holding the initial item, usually I can drop it or swap to other items but from then on its partly desynced and what I see in my hands doesn't usually match the server anymore. Once I tried to knife a zombie after the fact but then 10 more came running at me, because the server thought I'd shot a gun (my initial item in hands) when on my end I swapped to a knife. The only fix is either tying up with rope and a friend removing the bugged item from my inventory or relogging.

    The only thing I have to add to this is that I've noticed firing ghost bullets will occasionally use up my ammo, despite the weapon jam desync. Idk how that fits into this, but I've experienced it several times.

    On PS when dayz first came out we were plagued with this bug. I figured out just switching weapons caused it. ive had a bandage stuck in my hands when i thought i was shooting ….. friend seen me punching air when i thought i was smoking a guy wit a m4. It also worked from the other perspective opposite …. Ive been killed by bandages, food, melee weapons anything from a distance, Including tires lol. Other types of causes were reloading mags- if i swapped a empty or almost empty mag with a full the server would not register it and id shoot ghosts, worked with partial mags as well half bullets real half not. the most reliable fix was a relog but it happed so much couldnt bother, i fugured out with the former item desync cause, spam leaning would let me know if i was desynced- if i moved i would be de synced, and if not im good- you will dodge if holding a non firearm weapon. Doesn’t happen as much anymore. Thank god.

    I had it proven on several videos 2 years ago in patch 1.16 where it happened lots of times and even though proof was recorded every idiot claimed it was my internet or PC when it was always the game

    the worst bug is when you catch something while fishing but nothing actually appears at your feet. It happens like a third of the time. And if it’s intended then it’s a stupid feature

      This is intended, it's implied the fish ate your bait and got away. Fishing is probability based, you're not guaranteed a fish every time you cast. You can also catch cooking pots and wellies which you may have already known.

    it seems kinda similar to another bug, where you cant place items in certain spots of your inventory,
    relog & on the server side there was an item there already you weren't seeing client side.
    ive often wondered if it would be fixed by forcing a sync between client and server every X minutes, and if that sync would create more problems.

    Many times I've seen people holding up their fists like they're punching with a gun still in their hands, when they punch a shot goes off. And because of the way you put your hands up the gun then shoots upwards due to how the player is gripping the gun.

    This was an issue with lag switching before, people would lag switch and essentially be invisible to everyone else and their gunshots make zero noise aswell,

    I've been playing on console for three years now, up until these last updates I've had ghost bullets happen at most 5 times. I've had it happen at least the same amount since the DMR update. 5 times in two plus years Vs 5 times in 6 months, definitely seems to be a much more substantial problem

    Just leaving my 2 cents.
    Ghost bullets do happen even with Bolt Actions, its rarer than mag fed weapons, but it DOES happen.
    ALSO
    Foliage DO sometime straight up block bullets. I 100% have proof of this in my on experience creating a private modded server.
    LASTLY
    Shotguns can sometimes just straight up not do any damage at all, even with buckshot. Which youd think would just be some pellets doing damage and some not, but nope, Ive had allot of cases where the entire shot register.

    Also the damage impact registration issues that persist both in DayZ and Reforger (sometimes in Arma 3). Not the ghost bullets as mentioned in video, but specifically the registering the damage (or I should say not registering) to other players that occur in the most unsuitable moment

    You can be desynced holding a weapon and when you swap on your screen everyone else sees you still holding the same item. It’s the same issue just an extension. I’ve noticed it on Xbox quite a few times probably because we have such a big group at a big base on console so desyncs happen often.

    When dayz came out on ps4 me and my buddies had this problem every single time we played and the only way to tell if a gun was working right was to shoot a wall and see if it made impact. Thought this problem was solved but now it’s back and even worse than before

    As for the dude in the tree it could just be aim and bad luck combined with the trees hit box.. sometimes you just paint an outline around your target looking like the grouping was solid but hit little to nothing

    I've seen friends and myself experience odd moments where I swore I was on target and nothing... I've never seen anything as bad as Tope's video. But often will have my friends inspect my guns and to them they're jammed.

    Oh shit... This explains alot to me. This is one of the reasons I haven't played in awhile. I got frustrated when there was almost 3 in a row and many intense situations that were unbelieable in the past. I really think I hit like 4-7 times with vss in 4m in range and nothing to him and I died. This is just one of them. Thanks WOBO! But I'm still unhappy, because it's there, and I just cant play it in this state. It's very game breaking for me... :( I hate it because i love this game... Hope the dev's find a way soon to fix it! Thanks for bringing these things up in the open!

    I've had this happen to me multiple times over the years. Even when having a pristine kit. The worst time, hitting a re-log did nothing. That server was just unplayable for me. Also my teammates could see/hear me shooting. I just had no impacts.

    I've been playing on deathmatch servers this week to practice shooting, and it's way worse with shotguns. You clearly have the target on sight, you shoot, and nothing happens. No complain from the other players' character and no bleeds. At first, I thought it was me bc I suck at gunplay, but no, even a player standing still, and it doesn't register. It doesn't happen everytime, but it happens way more with shotguns.

    I saw you cannot get a ghost jam with a crossbow. I beg to differ. It happens and the crossbow shoots but no bolts exit the bow, but the animation shows the bow shooting, over and over like a dry fire in the pistol animation.

    I've seen the opposite happen: ghost jam. Likely a similiar de-sync issue but it just happened when unjamming the gun. I heard and saw my friend shoot the gun but on his screen it was jammed.

    My personal theory is that if you have a higher ping, and try to do multiple actions too quickly with a weapon, it will lag sending to the server while client side is fine. I’ve had it happen multiple times to me playing while my friends with better internet than me, don’t.

    in 2018 this bug was hunting me and i was wondering what was cousing it. At that moment i was thinking that reloading weapon with holding "R" was the biggest problem and you were thinking that you have full mag and in reality it was empty.

    I've had late bullets. Head shoot a zombie. About 2 seconds later the bullet arrives and they go down.
    I just mag dumped a bear and the 30rnd mag stopped with 8rnds left (and a live bear) with no apparent jam.

    I had this exact problem where my gun showed me that it was jammed but I couldn’t unjam it. I had to logout and back in again and turned out I had been shooting bullets when I was trying to figure out what was happening.

    I've had my crossbow experience this issue several times as well on console. I load up the bow, but no bolt is visibly "chambered", resulting in dry-firing. I also cannot reload anymore. So while a desync jam is a likely explanation, it might not be the case, since crossbows aren't supposed to jam... If it happens again I will record my experience.
