Would like to do the same mod to my TD5 series 2 but you didn’t give the part number for the bigger spool, what does it suit besides TD5? Please consider that I’m in Australia and I need a part number I can track down. Cool video car junkeez
Hi, Thanks Mike 😁 sorry I can’t help with a part number, I got the core from turborebuild.co.uk then got the bigger billet wheel through a friend who works with turbos and he also rebalanced it then I reworked the housing to match 👍
Great vid. I’m curious to get your feedback on a question. 2003, bit of background on car... 15p auto D2, EGR delete, mid box delete, decat, 22 psi , Map as well. I’m getting high EGT 700+ when driving at 90km +, I’m desperate to drop these down. I’ve had 2 schools of thoughts. Option 1. Replace the intercooler with a high performance unit like serck, Ali, etc...and check exhaust flex housing bore as it maybe smaller than 2.5 inch. Option 2. Go to a 3 inch exhaust mandrel. However it looks like the turbo dump pipe is 2.75 inch bore. But not positive on that. So love to hear your thoughts. Also would porting the exhaust manifold and turbo inlet help? Also would the hybrid chra help reduce EGTs? I noticed you don’t run a EGT sensors. Cheers
Cheers 😁 yes definitely go for a larger intercooler and make sure you have a decent well flowing air filter setup. A decent chra with a billet wheel will help a little and good exhaust flow and porting with definitely help but mostly it will be down to the map as you need to match the fuel to air ratio on boost to keep the egt’s down, I use a lambda sensor in the exhaust pipe on the Dyno to do this when I map but you could use egt sensors but there’s lag and a bit tricky but can be done successfully 👍
Yea I know what you mean, main leaks are fuel regulator and rocker cover and bung on front of the head. Also ecus can pack up and injectors. Other than that they’re awesome 😂
Good video, quite quirky going purple on the turbo housing. Was this core a custom job or can you offer a Garret part number?? Ive got a spare turbo i can play with.
@@garethsmith6138 you could just buy a new core with upgraded bearing and billet wheel (standard size) as that will just bolt straight into your standard turbo housings, don’t expect a massive difference in performance though but it does come on boost a little earlier 👍 cheers
I mostly use the 3/8 mate, just be carful not to use it to tighten to tight like a ratchet or arm as it will snap the pin in the mechanism, I did it and had to order one from America 😂
hi i have a 2003 discovery td5 not had it long but when i stat to move off my foot to the floor and it crawls lacks power and its scary when leaving a busy junction im not clued up to much on dignostics but ive done i think a volt meter test on the maf sensor andit reads o.o.5volts and doesnt move when i press throtle is maf sensor bad and what cn i do to solve this ive looked at your video of you fitting a new hybro turbo and you mensioned you bypased the maf can i do this myself and what do i need pat wise many thanks sandy mckinney from scotland uk
Hi Sandy. It does sound like you have a bad MAF as you should have from 0.2v to 4.8v on one pin that increases as there more air flow. You should only get bad throttle response up to around 15 seconds after start up though as the ecu is designed to go into a default value after recognising a faulty MAF. Try with the MAF unplugged and wait 30 seconds after start up then see if you get good throttle response, if you don’t then it’s not just the MAF that’s faulty. On my 15p ecus I can disable the MAF by modifying some hex code to make it like a 10p ecu as the 10p only use the MAF to control the EGR valve and we all blank that off anyways as they are useless. You can actually run no MAF as it is but you just have to wait each time on start up a few seconds before you get throttle response, I do also modify the maps on my 15p ecus to suit no MAF too as the 15p ecu does use the MAF to control a small amount of fuelling but the majority it controlled by the MAP sensor, it’s probably worth cleaning your MAP sensor too. Thanks Shane
@@CarJunkeez thanks shane for your reply today I tried disconnected maf wire should the engine cut out when doing this but mine still runs mmm so ive ordered a egrblanking kit for it also I to have bought a xyz switch too finding kickdown not so good either ive looked at so many you tube videos trisbeak tv is good with leam and nisse I do fancy a remaped ecu ok first things first many thanks sandy
No the engine won’t cut out with the MAF unplugged, it will run with default values after a few seconds from starting so you’ll have low throttle response for those few seconds then should drive well. Good move with the egr blanking Sandy and yes the XYZ switch is also a common failure so worth replacing. Yes I’ve seen the trisbeak RUclips channel and looks good mate.
Hi mate, having so many problems with my disco 2 TD5,would you continue with it or replace it with a 300tdi?I have already thown my checkbook at this engine and I'm so pissed at the unreliability that I can't trust it anymore.I have bought a 300tdi already.Just need to confirm I going in the right direction.
The TD5 is my favourite Land Rover engine and I’ve never had many reliability problems in my defender but the D2 is usually let down by to many electrical related problems as they have far to much going on like the body computer and failing fuse boxes and immobiliser issues. The best thing a D2 could do with is all the vehicle loom being replaced with a defender one and making everything simple and run an immo free ecu and make your own immobiliser. I do also love the simplicity of the 300 and 200tdi though, especially how good they run under water 😂
Personally on a TD5 I prefer a decent hybrid as VNT can be tricky to set up correctly and also are more prone to fail due to more moving parts, although they can work very well when sized correctly and setup correctly. Thanks Shane
Enjoyed that and good to see a local Stockport (south?) on YT. Going to try and get my manifold and turbo off this side of xmas and mod the manifold and most likely re cartridge the turbo. Great video super explanation. Thanks mat

Hellooo, i have to buy a New turbo for my DEFENDER TD5, could you tell me where did you find - buy yours? Please, thanks a lot, oh... And what características has your New one... Or how can I ask for the same one, thanks a lot 👍😉
Hi. For the turbo in the video I purchased a core from www.turborebuild.co.uk then I was given a oversized billet wheel from a friend who builds turbos so I bored the compressor housing to match and had my friend balance it, sorry I don’t have the exact measurements.
Hi do you sell tuned chips??? I'm doing a td5 trialer and I want least electrics that I can to run the engine and I'd buy a chip with maf delete if you sell them
Hi, I sell full ECU’s and your probably best with an immo free one that’s mapped, that way you don’t need any of the immobiliser wiring and hardware for it to run. I can modify your existing ECU if needed. Thanks 👍
Thanks for the great vids, mate! Can you add a turbo to an 86 Defender 90 diesel N/A? Or suggest any performance mods to get more grunt up hills and to keep up with traffic? I’m an expat living in the States and came across a rhd Landie a fellow Brit had shipped over from home and just had the motor rebuilt. Any suggestions would be much appreciated. Cheers.
Hi Mate, thanks for the compliment and watching 👍 it would be best to fit a 200tdi as the old na don’t like boost, but if you have no choice then you could run say about 6psi and keep intake temps down with decent intercooler or even water meths. If I had to do it I’d fit a small supercharger instead and a simple home made water meths injection switched in with a simple boost pressure switch and no intercooler, you’d have instant lowdown power that way 🚗💨
No it has a different flange and different oil feed and return, you could modify manifold etc. to fit but it would be very laggy and only come on boost high up in the rev range and also you would have to tweak the injector pump for the extra required fuelling.
@@CarJunkeez Thanks for the info mate. I see you're in Stockport. I used to work at Hollingdrake/guy salmon land rover in Stockport. It's a small world! Now living in New Zealand.

this noise from the exhause then the manifold leaks is it constant or just under heavy load? i have a high pitched scream at about 3000rpm on a totally stock 10p in 3rd and somtimes 4th. i thought it was a boost leak
