Hong Kong. A city I know all too well. I didn't expect to be able to visit in 2022, or at any point in the near future. But when the Hong Kong government announced the borders were opening and the quarantine would be dropped, I knew I had to go find out how much the place had changed. I last visited in 2019, a tumultuous year for the city, to say the least. So many things had happened since then, and most of the world didn't notice.
So my plan was to hit the streets and get some answers. Along the way I'd get a very stimulating foot massage and find out the new rules for clubbing in HK.

How could it be? According to the 2022's Human Freedom Index report, Hk ranks 43, while CCP China ranks 152 (out of the total 163 countries). Something is wrong! How could it be that one country gets two rankings? Isn't it against the National security Law.

The best thing from Tommy is that he always handles sensitive matters with great care and is close to being as apolitical as possible. That makes his videos very watchable.
I went to HK first in 1990... One night I met the commander of the British forces in HK, he took me to Wanchai, insisting we'll have a Scotch in each bar!! I think I got to 40 pubs...and drinks...the next morning I woke up lying passed out in front of a HSBC bank being woken up by a HK policeman with all the employees in their Monday best waiting for me to move away from the entrance...
Me and my brother used to go to Hong Kong all the time during 2017, 2018, and 2019. The last time we went was the November before pandemic started and we witnessed protests, riots, police blocking roads and throwing tear gas, etc. One memory I have is us having to run from tear gas being thrown on the street, we hightailed it a few streets down and took refuge inside a 7-11 while we waited for it to die down. Going home using the metro was not possible that day due to riots and protests, we had to call an Uber and even that took us having to walk 30 minutes to a different part of Kowloon for the driver to be able to pick us up. We saw firsthand what was going on at that time. Other than that though, I have the best memories of traveling to HK multiple times in my life. The feeling I get when I'm there is unexplainable. It's retro and luxurious, but heavily cultured and down to earth, yet nostalgic and timeless at the same time. It is a place that I will always keep close to my heart. So glad to find your RUclips and see how things are there in the current times. Can't wait to see more of HK. Kudos, enjoy and be safe.
as a Hongkonger and your old subscriber I am amazed by how well you understand the current situation here. Never thought you would visit

Just like the guy said in 13:08, it is okay if you just want a safe place to live, but if you want more freedom then Hong Kong is not the case.

Actually laughed out loud when I got to 16:50, lovely use of language and lovely video. I’m honoured that you love our city, we can sense it by the way you speak about it. One of the thing I realized about HK when I first came back from living in Canada was, Hong Kong is like a big terminal, people comes and goes. People from around Asia and the world would come here for different reason. Depends on the people, some people would stay long enough and settle. Hong Kong has always been a city known for its fast pace, and it is constantly changing.

I've been in Hong Kong dozens of times but usually stay in Kowloon. Best noodles on earth! Hong Kong is all about the food for me. My first trip there was in 1971, my last was 2003. Roast Pork crispy noodles...mouth watering...Char shou chow mien.
uhhh, I think they have some competition?
Greg Mock, if you have money to go to Hong Kong, and you are Chinese, but all you can talk about are roast pork crispy noodles!!!! How about the awesome tasting delicacy food such as abalone and ginseng congee or soup? Abalone is so delicious that even the canned abalone are awesome too !!!! Ginseng congee or ginseng soup also taste so awesomely good. Char shou chow mein are just ordinary food that is available everywhere in the Chinese restaurants in the USA. You seems to says that these ordinary food are so much better tasting in Hong Kong!!!!! Chinese food such as Roast Pork crispy noodles are Americanized Chinese food in the USA. I don’t care for any of these so ordinary food. The American culture is junk food such as pizza, burgers, fried chicken and French fries which are feed to even 2 year old babies!!!!!

What I liked about Hong Kong from the video is the atmosphere. A mix of depressing and solitary vibes which is totally different from the crazy chaotic energy in countries like Thailand, Vietnam, India where the streets don't look pleasant, the buildings look semi destroyed. Hong Kong kinda reminds me of Japan but with less people. Overall you can feel the friendly vibes like they showed in the old movies. Would love to visit. Not sure about living there though. But looks interesting. Maybe it looks totally different with no rain too.
The contrast between the people and the architecture is crazy. It’s kind of a rigid society but unlike japan people are really easy to start conversations with and easy to relate to, even when they aren’t drinking. In japan you gotta wait til they are drunk and there’s more distance still. Of course many great people everywhere tho.
Hong Kong is denser than Japan

this video is pretty different from what hong kong used to be like. I grew up there, there are usually way more people out and about. It looked weirdly very quiet for HK.

Thanks Tommy, The best intro to H.K. I've seen. Back in the last century it stuck me that HK and NYC were the two most similar cities in the world on pretty much all levels, and that you can hate it or love it for the same reasons.

Great video thank you. I came to Hong Kong 4 months ago and love it. First lived in North Point and now live in Mong Kok just by lots of the places you show. There's something very special about this place for sure.
I loved living in Hong Kong in 2008 and I would say since 2015 everything has gone downhill. It just doesn’t feel the same anymore and a lot of the big financial companies have moved to Singapore.
very sad.
I died when he whipped out the Covid test in the club. So glad I found this the channel. This dude rules.
As a secondary student in HongKong, I notices most of the recent changes here but most of them are making HongKong a more and more communist place. If you ask me the question about “HongKong is getting better or worse…” I think HongKong is getting worse no matter in political ways or I would say it’s not living but to survive in HongKong.
Btw you got some funny mistakes LOL for example normally you write the number of how many you want instead of ticking the box on the dim sum menu. Oh ya, you should wear your mask all the time on the street.
Nvm those, I really appreciate that your cantonese and thanks for showing about HongKong^^ Good video!!
After 2019, all of us HongKongers knows that like, most of the freedoms are like…taken away from us locals and like the government is treating us weirdly. Uhh, other things just find the infos. by yourself but beware of what info you get because HK, like China, most media is hiding a lot from everyone on earth.
I do really appreciate that you uses Cantonese and agreed on a lot we do. You really do know much about HongKong!! Thanks a lot!
Don't forget Hong Kong is mainland China's sovereign if whoever feel they have no freedom they're encouraged to leave it.
The state of Hong Kong is very sad to see, considering the greatness of the people. I am not fully informed of the situation in Hong Kong except for the fact many are upset regarding the influence from the mainland. I live in the UK and have seen and heard of many people moving here permanently, its very sad to see.
Been following you for a while and was excited to see your HK video. Then even more shocked when you stopped in front of Right Mansion where I am moving into in a couple weeks! So random but cool. Hope to run into you next time!
I am glad you have introduced Hong Kong to the world and you know this place really well. Hope you enjoy the trip in Hong Kong.
Thought Singapore and New York were the most capitalist place but was wrong.Hong Kong is on another level men after seeing professional guys living in really small rooms
Mainland china is even worse. I never been asked so directly and up front about how much money that I make until I went there. It you don't make enough, apparently you can't be friends with certain people.
I just found your channel today and I immediately fell in love with your content. Your format, your humor, your camera style. I genuinley feel like we're just too close friends joking around with eachother while we walk along the streets of some city you apparently have a vast knowledge of. I just walk next to you the whole way while you make random remarks about street signs or local history. Dude, keep this up. I beg of you. This is how travel content should be.
If you can, start from the first video and work your way up. It's a roller-coaster.
I am claustrophobic and Hong Kong looks very compact.

Come again soon, please! Take record for Hong Kong!
HK has lost it;s charms going to be just another province in China sad for the ppl
I grew up in Hong Kong, currently living in the states, but all my family are still back there, however I haven't been back in 3 years due to the pandemic protocols they've had up until recently. It's still home to me, and my favorite place on earth, but it is changing, not always for the better, however it's still special.
Besides the dim sum dishes you had, you also need to get Ha Gau, Chueng Fun, Cha Siu Bao, which are equally local, and the most important dish you need to get is Cha Siu, which is basically bbq honey roast pork. Cha Siu is my all time favorite, and while you can get it in the west, it never tastes like how it is in Hong Kong, not even in the various Chinatowns around the US. To get the best Cha Siu, I would recommend going to the restaurant "Lei Garden", which has a Michelin star, and while it's more expensive than your local greasy spoon, it's still affordable and consistently has some of the best Cha Siu Hong Kong has to offer. Seeing his video really makes me home sick, makes me miss my family, the people and the food.
Despite some of the problems Hong Kong faces, property prices, politics etc. there are many benefits to living there such as universal healthcare which means no one ever has to worry about going into medical debt or paying for hospital care, and the government hospitals are known to have the best doctors too. Hong Kong also has the worlds highest life expectancy. Hong Kong is also among the safest places in the world to live, you literally never have to worry about being a victim or violence, and crime was something I never even gave a second thought to until I started living in the UK and the US. While property prices are extremely high, the highest in the world, everything else from transportation to food can be cheap... not cheap by 3rd world standards, but cheap by western standards. There are also plenty of cool affordable stores if you don't limit yourself to the financial center where all the luxury brand name stores are... there are plenty of local malls in difference areas with very well priced goods.
Hong Kong is truly a unique place in the world, and it's a great place to visit, cause most people speak English, and all the road signs and MTR (the "metro") having English signage too, and you don't have to worry about wandering into "dangerous" neighborhoods, cause there are none, you're free to walk and explore anywhere. It's also a very interesting city to walk around due to the fact that it's very dense, so every street is packed full of interesting stores and visuals, something I too took for granted until I moves to the US where things are more spread out in a lot of places... I could walk for 2-3 hours in Hong Kong without getting board, and it's so easy to hop on a bus, tram, train or inexpensive cab cause everywhere is very accessible via public transportation. Winter is the best time to visit however, as summer is super hot and humid... November December are like light jacket to t-shirt weather. I can't wait to go back.
I enjoyed reading this, Hong Kong looks really interesting, ty.

As Tommy points out, the people here have been great, as is the city. I hope to explore a bit more in the coming days, and now after watching this video, I thankfully have a better idea of where to head.

Your ancestors died at the hands of the CCP. 40-60 million were murdered by the CCP. But of course you don't care about that. When Britain was given Hong Kong in a peace treaty, we brought advanced civilisation. Brings me to your last point - the British are far, far, far wealthier than China. Your average salary and percentage of wealth adjusted for population is so far behind the UK it is ridiculous. Sorry to have to tell you the truth. Oh and Ireland... let's see ;-) Tell me, what can you criticise the CCP for? I can criticise and remove my Government. Can you?
Thank you. I’m learning a lot from you keep doing this I enjoy very much 🇦🇺❤
I lived on mainland cn, and going to Hồng Kông was always a pleasure because the buildings were occupied, the escalators worked and everything was pristine. You’ll know the change will be complete when walking up broken escalators is normal.
Can't imagine you can swear in Cantonese and did foot message in HK which is a very local experience there. As a Hongkonger, I've even never tried this since I was born. Thumbs up!
Hi there, I am a local Hong Konger and I really appreciate you do pay respect to our culture, welcome to HK and hope you enjoy your trip !!
香港人应该继续抗争。否则大陆化是早外的事。
Hey brother, I want to visit Hong Kong but will Chinese govt detain me with the New Security Law (Applicable to everyone on the planet ABSURD but its true) ? I have posted some anti chinese govt posts a few years back online. Whats your take on this ?
@@dillianna96lol you’ll be fine even if you run the largest anti Chinese campaigns. The government doesn’t care about individuals as long as you’re not causing a riot or any type of public incitements. Also, it’s the HKG gov, not the mainland one.
Your New york accent is very strong in this video, or maybe I'm just noticing it now ;)
It's the skyscrapers bringing out his NY 😉
Left Hong Kong 12 years ago for America and never a single day I regret my decision. If you take it face value then Hong Kong is cool but deep down the city has been on a decline since 1997.
Got Covid quick test in Bar, that's most ironic thing, that's HongKong Today.
So awesome to see you in Hong Kong! I traveled there in 2018 and I absolutely loved the city. I’m from Las Vegas originally. I reminisced a lot about it sense I left. Thank you for bringing me back. Amazing culture. Amazing people. Definitely a unique city that I hold dear to my heart.
Yep, I'm glad to see his video here as well!
Thanks for visiting! As a HK citizen, we are delighted by your great experience here back in 2018!
PS: Our boarders are open again so we look forward to welcoming you back in the future if you ever decide to visit us again!

Nobody is from Vegas, brottle baby ? No daddy, only a show business Mother ?
Why you love communists?
The part where he said suit people an what color is your Bugatti in Cantonese had me dying 😭😭😭😭
Had a memorable stay in HK in 1997. Locals were awesome. I transited through HK many times after. It is not the same anymore. There are better destinations and transit points to Asian cities now.
ni hao -- very nice to see good old hk these days. especially via a fellow new yorker. reminds me a lot of nyc here during the pandemic without the tourists. in a lot of ways i liked it better. however, as you know we are much further back to normal than i see hk is, if not fully. they will get there soon i am sure. anyway, what a great job you did here i am very impressed both with your doc skills and your takes on things. thanks!
I do hope things have picked up there, since. My third (and hopefully not last) visit was 2017, before politics and pandemic. Wonderful city to explore, eat, drink and take photos.
i lived in HKG for over 10years.. and your Cantonese still sounds better than mine. Love the video. keep it up!
clubbing with that mask and covid test was hilarious. No way in hell I'm going to Hong Kong lol.
The mask mandates ended in early 2023.
Very fascinating bunch, the bankers are. Those Jewish kids handing you that bracelet was very sweet of them haha.
I would visit without hesitation for the traditional food. Such great many choices and variety.....cool people too.
Ruled by a regime of no accountability, everything in the HK city is deteriorating fast.
I was touched by the elder man in the message place ,they are so kind and so nice, people are working hard,You are also very warm-hearted person, I hope Hong Kong can become better and people there can live a better life ,I’m from china mainland, I really love Hong Kong❤
Met my future wife in Hong Kong. Been married now for 15 years with a 11 year old daughter. Love living and working in Hong Kong , but glad I’m now in the States.
it was obviously no one was able to really talk..
the repression was just below the surface
The escalator at Central does go downhill; from 6am to 10am...then uphill from 10am till midnight.
Thanks for the video and telling us about Blinkest. I had never heard of it before.
29:03 That's how I met your mother.
Very good Cantonese, I laughed when u were yelling at the ticket machine 😂
光復香港,時代革命
Tripping down memory lane for sure. Thanks! If it's not too late, you should head to Nga Tsin Wai Rd to get a feel for old Kowloon before they tear it all down. At least 3 years ago, deconstruction had not started. It's a bit of a walk from MTR which is why it retained its character for so long. Sham Sui Po is the equivalent of Nishinari. Check that out also.
