    In 2013 Wong Kar-Wai released his epic martial arts film - The Grandmaster. It featured depictions of authentic Chinese martial arts styles. In this episode I select scenes from Gong Er (Zhang Ziyi) fighht scenes and highlight their traditional Bagua Zhang techniques contained within.

    Thank you for pointing out the details. The fighting movements in the film took a different meaning with your explanation.

    Do you think in a fight it would be better for some who has the strength to fight back by punching or by bagua palms which seems more effective for defense?

      @MuShinMartialCulture  8 месяцев назад +1

      Bagua also uses fists, albeit less, but it also uses knees, elbows and more. So don't think it only uses palms

    Please, make one on Max Zhang's character too who plays a Xingyi Master. I thought his Xingyi was quite authentic, the first time i'd seen the movie years ago. And please mention the lineage too, Bagua of Zhang Ziyi was it Yin style?

    • @MuShinMartialCulture

      I'll keep that in mind. Zhang studied a bit with Cheng stylist Han Yanwu, but also a few others of other lineage. The director also consulted with various styles which influenced the movie

      My understanding is that a lot of it was with the female teacher in Singapore teaching a form of Cheng style. I think her name is Ge Chunyan. She is famous for winning forms competitions in the past and she's in a lot of the old classic performance videos we watch. People here might criticize her saying it's just for performance but from what I can gather she is very good at what she does. I met one of her students and going by him and the way he spoke about his teacher, she sounds like a very good teacher who taught him well and did the right thing by him.

      @skipinkoreaable 8 месяцев назад

      Perhaps Ge Chunyan was not the main teacher for the role, but I'm pretty sure I saw videos about her coaching Zhang Ziyi for the role.

    This doesn't look like real BaGua Chang - it's just the film-maker's version of the spectacular aspects.....

    • @MuShinMartialCulture
      @MuShinMartialCulture  8 месяцев назад +8

      It's highly over dramatized but as I labeled, they did include real bagua Zhang techniques

      They train only external techniques... no internal qualities at all. For internal arts this is not authentic at all because nei jia should display nei jin. You can literally see how their movement is empty.
