I own both...I tend to go with this Seiko. Why?? A combination of vintage and modern look and I like the way it feels on my wrist just slightly better.
In which way does it feel better? Bib plus for me is how the 65 sits fantastically low on the wrist and is nice and light, but the skinny bezel makes it look larger than 40mm to my eye. The Seiko looks a little less maxi-dial, but I worry to make the jump due to the thickness. It looks like it would be a bit top heavy by comparison. Never bonded with my old SKX for this reason, too tall and off balance.
Late to the party here, I’ve gone for an Oris, yes they are pricy compared to the Seiko, but the better movement, lower production numbers is inevitable to end with a higher retail, but also you see less of them, and for me, slightly slimmer which I like, and I don’t need 200m water resistance, as it will only go in a pool maybe on holiday, so that’s me sold, I’ll take a punt on an Oris. Cheers.
I got spb149 few days ago and man it’s a beauty. The camera definitely adds some heft to it, but in person it’s perfect for my 6.75inch wrist. It looks so classy, vintage and modern at the same time. I am so over the moon with it that I don’t even care how fast or late it’s running. Each time i compare the time on my apple watch and the seiko, i see almost same time. Very satisfied and happy with the purchase.I recommend anyone who is looking for the seiko to go for it if you can find it.
The Seiko is an easy winner for me. The looks, the case, everything about it is just the way i like, only thing i wish it had is a better movement. The oris seems like a very cool "dress diver" but the seiko is the one that stunned me the first time i saw a decent photo of it.
SPB149J1 Was later put back on timegrapher. 0ms beat error. I think there was some interference with the case and noise with the timegrapher? but on wrist does about +5-10s/day not regulated. EDIT: after 30min dial up +11/s and the other key position 12 down.... -10seconds. so should be fine on wrist. just had to make sure after that horrible showing in the video.
I'm happy to say I am an owner of the SPB149. It is my very first automatic watch. Basically the most fancy watch I have ever had. I just wish the blue dial would pop in real life as it does it every youtube video.
Is it very muted look! Which is I think most people in the luxury world would want. and this price range is entering that category! in the sunlight tho it pops nicely.
Great point. The feature on the Oris I like better is that Gilt dial, it looks exquisite. But overall the Seiko SPB line is killer and is going to appeal to many for years to come. Cheers!
Oris 65 leans more of the "dress diver." Seiko SPB leans more of the practical/tool watch variety, but also a clean look with its simplicity. Depending on what you are looking for in a watch, you'll have a preference for one of the other. These watches are for different people. I am of the belief that at MSRP, the Seiko is a steal, especially if you get an AD discount. Your base premise regarding similar market value is based more on the anecdotal secondary market values vs extreme AD discounts.
I think you nailed it. Dress diver that vs more of a hardcore tool-ish diver. On a nato instead of the bracelet some versions of 65 actually can look pretty tool watch-ish (not sure about the blingy bronze detailed ones)... but I have the numerical dial Oris and am currently coveting the Seiko. Not instead, just in addition. So damn, I guess it really is a tossup haha *facepalm*
I love your reviews. No BS just watch talk. I’m in love with that Oris. The X factor is off the scale. Does the important things right. I’m getting one.
The Blue dial on the Seiko is a limited edition which also comes with a second strap.... The standard grey dial and other versions are under $1200..... That would be a more apple to apples comparison and makes it a much, much better value.
great vid!. I have to go seiko because not a fan of the overly yellow fake patina. also, if watch is running too fast after 2 days of non movement, just hack/stop the seconds until accurate. easiest way!
Seiko movements do take a month or so to get broken in properly, so I'd have to give a bit of leeway there. As for the X-factor, the ISO rating alone should bring that up a point at least.
I have the Seiko and when I compare that to my Swiss dive watches, the Seiko always gets the wrist time. Things that stand out are the Lume, Dial color, Case curves, and the longer power reserve with about +3spd.
Great review. I just tried on SPB149 and Oris Sixty-Five 42 mm, and bought the Oris. I went to the AD thinking I would walk away with the Seiko as all reviews were positive and Oris, on paper, doesn't have the best specs (only 100m water resistance, 38 hr power reserve). Seiko specs are better. Then... the Seiko's thick bezel, less than superb finish of the hands and the overall vibe just threw me off. I thought SPB149 looks better in videos than in metal. Then I saw the Oris Sixty Five with a green dial and my heart melted. Totally agree with your X factor comment.
Oris, I bought one and it's stunning, the sapphire domed crystal is unusual and practical - agreed the lume isn't great though but forgiven as dial so beautiful in the daylight. One of the few watches people have seen on my wrist and commented on.Super comfy too
For my personal preference, 65 is much better for me. Doomed sapphire glass, tapered down bracelet, vintage thin bezel, light and comfortable when I wear it.
I own Oris diver 65 on a leather strap. In my view, it is very elegant and retro. SEIKO is way more versatile and utilitarian. I would buy one, especially the limited edition)
Phew this is really hard to pick a winner. I have both as well. Both watches have equal wrist time as well. However, I had to adjust the Seiko. Now it’s running +2 seconds a day. It’s still hard to chose, but I think the Seiko wins.
Oris all day, however I really like warm tones. Better bracelet/clasp, movement, that inky blue dial is insane, and wears better on the wrist. I do love the toolishness of the seiko though. Very tough vs more vintage snd elegant
Two of my favorite brands, Oris and Seiko. I've got the Oris Divers 65 on the tropical strap while I'm watching this review. Really wish I would have picked up that Seiko when it released......I missed it, and it sold out quick. Sad.
Yeah. The value thing obviously goes more to Oris. I know you wanted the Seiko to win. I give you props for being fair. Fun video ! Back to the Yankees for me
X-factor really helped the oris in this battle. I feel the seiko is a bit too much BB58. Which is a great timepiece but no X!!!!! enjoy the yankees! From a jays fan!
Escapement & Watch also I just don’t get why Seiko seems to put so little effort into regulation in their movements. We aren’t all you who can regulate!

Fair enough! Ive seen more people on FB groups etc are choosing the seiko in this comparo. Even guys with both same watches. BTW I have just worn the seiko for 4 days striaght. 0.5s/day on my app. So its keeping amazing time. The timegrapher doesn't like seikos!!!! the oris is doing -1.5s/day on my wrist.
Escapement & Watch I’ve heard Seiko keeps much better time on the wrist than on a time grapher and that’s what counts . My collection is Seiko and Orient love them 👍🏻
Seiko SPB is a great looking watch, but the Oris Divers 65 wins it for me. Especially the 40mm black dial bronze bezel variant. Put it on the bracelet and you’re ready for the beach, put it on a leather strap and you can easily wear it with a suit while attending a wedding.👌🏼
I normally like vintage looking divers but the Oris divers 65 just looks really boring to me. There are many great dive watches at that price point but that watch isn’t in my top 5. I’ll take that seiko all day.
You poor souls have to watch me rant for 25min! :P This was very tough battle to make! Mentally it was always a toss up in my mind. I felt like the Seiko was the favorite from the start. WHO WON? The last 2 battles on the channel were won by Seikos. SKX and Blue Alpinist.
The gilt version of Seiko (better comparable) is even cheaper and makes the value comparison undoubtable. The pricing is not even close between these two models.
Interesting to watch this after having taken a management course on influencing people :) Some phrases seem right from the guidebook :D Though this may not be intended as influence ... but yet... it matches very well :)
I'm a Seiko collector, but, in this case, my vote has to go with the Oris. It's a true re-issue, where the Seiko is simply a 'homage' to the 62MAS. That would explain your 'X factor' for the Oris. Ultimately, though I find some of your reasonings flawed, your final talley is spot on, IMHO. The real difference between these 2 will be personal preference, nothing more.
@@bozosni as far as movements, I believe the Oris has an ETA 2824 or its Selida equivalent(?). The 6R15 is essentially a 4R35, a bomb-proof movement, with better materials, and I BELIEVE they have the same beat rate as the ETA. That said, I understand the new Oris Diver 65s now have an in-house.
@@varanid9 I use 4R35 (NH35) movements and its a simple reliable workhorse movement and nothing more. ETA, that is in the Oris, is a Swiss made movement with better materials and engineering and Hi-beat, 28.800 bph!
@@bozosni I didn't realize their beat rate was that high. I've always tended to have problems out of them except for the Selida clones. Oddly, I've also had more problems out of 6r15 movements than 4R35s.
Not often I give anything the nod over a Seiko, but... The '65 is a beautiful, cool watch. The Seiko is a huge step up in quality from what's been made before for the mass-market and worth the price for the build quality. But against the 62MAS, I think the bezel is a bit heavy looking and I can't really get over the PS 'X'. Diver '65 is so well designed, looks great in the metal (photos and vids somehow don't do it justice). Movement ok and lume weak, but hey... always something.
Love the 65 but I sold mine for the way it sat on my wrist...case is a bit to straight and the gaps bothered me. weak lume and mismatched lume I forgave.
Oris hands down. The design with the domed sapphire is just something special. You can get plenty of divers with looks close to the Seiko (the Mido ones for example). If you're looking for something like the Seiko it's a great value tho.
needs no beat error. needs to be decorated and have some special complication probably. Not a basic eta/sw that I regulated to 0s. it came at +10s day from factory. check out my oris review to see how i fixed the issues with it
I own the Oris 65 with a leather strap and very much like it. I also have a Tudor BB 58 and absolutely disagree with your opinion. It is a great looking and exciting watch. Not the same price though. Nice video.
tough...twice no but close. The base oris movement doesn't compare to the bb58 movement. I own a bb58 and I'll be upgrading to a divers 65 calibre 400 once a 38mm nonlimited is released.
My whole collection is made id Seiko and Oris watches. I do live both brands and think they offer great value on their watches. I own Oris 65 however dont have this Seiko yet. Oris is a more vintage watch, specs are not great but a beautiful and very comfortable watch due to that tapper on the bracelet. Once you have it in hand it really shows quality. Seiko is definitely more utilitarian and tool watch, I would even say a better everyday watch. Oris 65 is really not made to take the beating while seiko looks make for that.
Seiko all day everyday as it just speaks to me alot more as a whole irrespective of spec,etc..Just has that Magic Factor for me. Have/had nearly everything incl. Oris but just keep coming back to Seikos which get more wrist time vs everything else combined...I have to quit you Seiko but they make so many iconic/original/make you smile watches from $100 seiko 5's to GS..
That's a very significant beat error on the Seiko... I had to thoroughly regulate mine, which showed (new out of the box) minus 13sec/24h and a 0.9 beat error. It now averages between +1 to +2secs per day when wound. I don't Seiko can carry on expecting customers to accept shoddy regulation on their watches. After all, not all that many people can regulate their movement on their own. And let's not even get into the all to common QC issues that have popped up (along with higher expectations) around the release of the new Spb lines.
i put it back on after the video in 2 main positions for 30+ min. 0.0ms beat error. im going to chalk up the deviation to me talking and the mic picking it up or error in the machine. But I get your point. seiko should regulate these.
Yeah, that was a deal breaker for me, because, I love the thin bezel, the 12-pip that's just a big circle without the triangle, and, the beautiful box crystal of the original 62MAS. Seiko could have easily made the SLA017 a regular production model with the 6R15 movement, but, chose to give us mere mortals this SPB149 stripped of all original charm. Yes, it's a nice '60s style dive watch, no argument, but, a 62MAS it's not. I love my Seiko 'Willard' re-issue green , and my Marinemaster 300, but, I'm keeping my Oris 65 and probably won't bother with the Seiko shown here.
That's if you are regulating it manually without a time. Grapher. That way you can adjust it to how it performs exactly on your daily wear. After adjusting it a couple times you don't have to do it anymore. The reason why I mentioned the 3 days was because you don't have a timegrapher, so it's hard to tell how it performs with an app or something else, unless you don't give it enough time. Then the app is reliable.
Hmm tough. I'd say the oris wears true to size on bracelet. Seiko on strap. Because the seiko bracelet has the sticking out endlink will wear bigger on bracelet.
I’m fairly new to watches. You mentioned that with the Seiko you’ll be having to set the time back as it runs fast if left for a couple of days. You then said that setting the time back isn’t good for the movement, can you please explain why that is?
movements have different lift angles. Seikos is different then Oris. I belive the oris should have been 51 degrees. But only amplitude is effected by angle. Not rate!
I generally prefer swiss designs just because they are bit more elegant for me. However, in this case and from a design prospective, my vote goes for Seiko. Both are beautiful watches though. EDIT: I still support Oris and will buy their watches even if they are less then perfect because they are independent not part of any big organization trying to manipulate the market.
I actually prefer the 051 series to the new 141 series. Felt the dial indices really popped and the domed sapphire is so cool. But you need a 7 inch wrist or more for that watch. Out of the 141 and oris 65, I would say the oris is slightly more elegant and vintage in style, so the 65 nicks it for me. But like I said the 051 is beauty and can now be found in immaculate condition for say $500 to $700 used. So if you have a bigger wrist on value alone it is an absolute steal as it's equal in quality to both these models .
Great comparison! Sometimes it's okay to be boring. We don't always want that X factor. I've the SBDC101/SPB143J1. The time keeping is great. +3/+4 secs a day. Maybe I got lucky! 😄
@@EscapementWatch Hope you get your hands on it soon : ) BB58 is my grail watch. I'm not sure as to when I'd get one though! Keep doing these videos. Your videos are 👌
The oris is very similar to the BB58. both rivet bracelets. black gilt dials, rose gold hands indices. 40mm vs 39mm. I want to see one in person first tho. But if I end up selling these 2 in the video then I should be very close to a bb58. :)
Seikos issue is making a watch to the standards of say a Tudor but then putting a garbage movement in it. I'd rather pay more and get an 8l or pay less and get a 4r36
The only good thing about an automatic watch is the fact that it can be repaird..if one is willing to spend the money for a repair or service.....is one willing to do that?...even if its a rolex?.....The whole purpose of a watch is to tell you the time witch automatics dont do well at all.....The only reason we want them is because they look pretty...and that love affair soon dwindles when you start having to give it too much attention..like wideing and setting the time every week..the novelty soon wears off....automatic watches are like expensive woman..you have to feed it money and your time so that it can give you sub par time!.....I have the SPB149..number 2622...i got lucky with the movement accuracy...I love the watch but im not willing to become a slave to it...BL-1280-54a...
I disagree for the comments that 63mas or Black bay are boring i will say they are one if not the best looking and proportioned watches ever made with iconic designs for Seiko and Tudor. That Oris looks boring and weird to me, the best looking Oris for me is Divers Sixty-Five 40mm with 12 3 6 9 markers, thats exiting diver. But its good we yall have a bit different taste so we dont wear same watches.

@@bozosni I didn't realize their beat rate was that high. I've always tended to have problems out of them except for the Selida clones. Oddly, I've also had more problems out of 6r15 movements than 4R35s.
@@bozosni one reason I've diversified with a co-ax, a Grand Seiko and even a high accuracy quartz.
I've bought the Oris. So I'd pick that one. The Seiko just looks like every other Seiko.
+ 0.5 for the SBDC107 FOR THE PRICE 😉🥂
8.5 for the Oris movement that is at +/- 0 spd. What does a movement need to get a 10?
needs no beat error. needs to be decorated and have some special complication probably. Not a basic eta/sw that I regulated to 0s. it came at +10s day from factory. check out my oris review to see how i fixed the issues with it
@@EscapementWatch 42 hour power reserve is a little low also.
I own the Oris 65 with a leather strap and very much like it. I also have a Tudor BB 58 and absolutely disagree with your opinion. It is a great looking and exciting watch. Not the same price though. Nice video.
Thanks for sharing!
Both nice. But Seiko for me 😏. Great videos you make 👍
Thanks for watching!
Keep looking back at the Oris diver 65 .. but keep looking at the bb58 original, do you think the bb58 is worth 2x the price of the Oris diver 65?
tough...twice no but close.
Great vid
Oris 65 a clear winner for me !
Except for the 100m WR. Definitely not diver.
I have both. I prefer the Oris.
Got both of these watches , beautiful watches , the oris is a lot more comfortable though as the Sieko is quite heavy on the wrist
ORIS DIVER 65 12H 400 caliber 👍👍👍The best
I want the Oris to win ( obviously)
Gonna go with Oris. Personal preference, can’t stand a big bezel.
Ha. I am the opposite. The the bezel on the 65 is way too skinny for my tastes
Tough choice.. Both win
I got the Seiko and you mentioned adjusting the the watch every 3 days by a few seconds is bad for the movement? Can you explain why? Thanks
@@EscapementWatch AHH I see thanks for the explanation! Your knowledge and clear enthusiasm for watches have earned you a sub!
which one wears better on the wrist? I have smaller wrist and dont know which one to choose
Hmm tough. I'd say the oris wears true to size on bracelet. Seiko on strap. Because the seiko bracelet has the sticking out endlink will wear bigger on bracelet.
@@EscapementWatch thank you. Might get the Seiko on silicon strap as now they can be found under 1 grand
I’m fairly new to watches. You mentioned that with the Seiko you’ll be having to set the time back as it runs fast if left for a couple of days. You then said that setting the time back isn’t good for the movement, can you please explain why that is?
As in moving the hands counter clockwise put pressure on the gears.
@@EscapementWatch I didn’t know doing that would have an adverse effect on the gears.
I want the Seiko to win. Because I'm wearing the sla MM300 and it feels like I'm watching my lil bro get beat up.
What time is it?
I am confused. Why did you change the angle to 50°?
3:45
movements have different lift angles. Seikos is different then Oris. I belive the oris should have been 51 degrees. But only amplitude is effected by angle. Not rate!
only if you value lume brightness as an equal weighting
Which used market do you recommend for the 1600USD price?
try Reddit Watch Exchange. I'm selling mine there lol and i've seen others sold there! Ebay is abit more because of FEES!
Thank you!!
Chrono 24 too
Bro, can you compare this Oris 65 vs SLA 043? That would be more appropriate
It wouldn't be fair.
I’m scuba diver. Seiko wins.
What's the weight of the seiko and the Oris?
sorry do not remember them. but I did do full reviews of each with the weights
Very ,very inaccurate comparation... sorry mate but you are obviously a BIG Seiko FAN
It’s hard to choose, but I’d go for Oris. I foresee that my eyes are attracted to looking at time on Oris timepiece.
Solid assessment of low-middle tier watches.
I love the review but seriously, how do you only give the seiko an 8 for lume?
Seiko!
Thanks for sharing!
Seiko offer way more for the money the Oris is sub par by comparison
I actually prefer the 051 series to the new 141 series. Felt the dial indices really popped and the domed sapphire is so cool. But you need a 7 inch wrist or more for that watch. Out of the 141 and oris 65, I would say the oris is slightly more elegant and vintage in style, so the 65 nicks it for me. But like I said the 051 is beauty and can now be found in immaculate condition for say $500 to $700 used. So if you have a bigger wrist on value alone it is an absolute steal as it's equal in quality to both these models .
Seiko rules
I'd add more X-factor to the Seiko and retract from the Seiko. Seiko wins everything except the movement and bracelet.
Great comparison! Sometimes it's okay to be boring. We don't always want that X factor. I've the SBDC101/SPB143J1. The time keeping is great. +3/+4 secs a day. Maybe I got lucky! 😄
Very true! simple and clean. thats why the bb58 is so sucessful. I think I might sell my oris and save up for the BB58!
@@EscapementWatch Hope you get your hands on it soon : ) BB58 is my grail watch. I'm not sure as to when I'd get one though! Keep doing these videos. Your videos are 👌
Did you regulate it or that’s out of the box accuracy?
The oris is very similar to the BB58. both rivet bracelets. black gilt dials, rose gold hands indices. 40mm vs 39mm. I want to see one in person first tho. But if I end up selling these 2 in the video then I should be very close to a bb58. :)
@@rayyseason Hey, yes out of the box. Like I said, got very lucky!
So true which is why I only have two automatics. Sold all my sub par automatics as they were not worth spending money on to regulate and service.
One is a diver ; the other is not.
Nothing to compare.
Seiko no doubt...
No doubdt 62mas. Because looks more cooler sharper and serious then Oris.
But its good we yall have a bit different taste so we dont wear same watches.
seiko MUST win 🤓
The Seiko looks much better and wears much better. The Oris has a better movement.
where I can get for 1600???

Cool video, oris make great watches. Seiko are great but they dont put much attention into individual pieces its just high production numbers
