This was actually rare for the time. Movies have always mostly had happy endings with a few dramatic movies during the year. There's survivorship bias since the less amazing movies from that time are all forgotten, but I remember That being said, most movies today are worse than they were in the past for a different reason. They're made by people imitating talent rather than people with actual talent lol
No one could argue that this movie is one of the top 10 movies of all time. You have almost no argeument against it. The acting, the visiuals, the story, the music. Near perfect.
Lisa Gerrard who worked on the score was previously a member of Dead Can Dance. You'll find similarities to this in a song like "Indus" if you're seeking powerful choral music akin to Gladiator
