BELO HORIZONTE, BRAZIL - Belo Horizonte is a city in the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais. It’s a beautiful city, very modern and metropolitan, and it’s one of the most well known states in Brazil for food. In this video, we just had a day off and walked around, ate lunch, went to a coffee shop, and visited some attractions in the city like Praça da Liberdade. Prato feito - plate of the day - Here’s a term to know in Portuguese when you visit Brazil, which means the plate of the day. Plenty of simple restaurants will serve a plate of the day option that’s all you need on one plate. Today was the pork ribs, with collard greens, rice and cassava. Price - 13 BRL ($3.24) per plate
Rental car - about $65 per day - Throughout our Trip to Brazil, we rented cars in every city we visited, usually with Hertz (Localiza). Price came to about $65 per day.
OOP Café - We continued on to OOP Café, one of the best cafes in Belo Horizonte serving gourmet freshly roasted Brazilian coffee. Great place to have fantastic coffee when you’re in Belo Horizonte. Price - 7 BRL ($1.74) per cup
Praça da Liberdade - Finally in this visiting tour of attractions and daily living life in Brazil, we walked around Praça da Liberdade, a center square in the city, a park, and I especially loved the imperial palm trees. Big bottle water - 6 BRL ($1.49)

Things to do in Belo Horizonte:
- local PÃO-DE-QUEIJO ("cheese breads". try 'em while they're still warm or "in sandwich form");
- local CACHAÇAs (many brands);
- local TORRESMO ("pork cracklings", which usually begs for a cachaça (the other way around works as well));
- local CERVEJAs ("beers", many brands);
- local LINGUIÇAs (meaty "sausages");
- local QUEIJOs ("cheeses", of many kinds);
- local DOCE-DE-LEITE, doce de figo, doce de mamão ralado, or any other "sweets" (try with a slab of SOFT local cheese);
- ANY LOCAL dish (do your reseach beforehand);
- Parque das Mangabeiras, Praça do Papa, Praça da Savassi, Praça da Liberdade, Mercado Central, Parque Municipal, Mineirão e Mineirinho, Complexo da Pampulha, etc.
$4 for a nice lunch is a great deal! One would pay double for that at a fast food place in the U.S. Love your happiness and exuberance that comes across in your videos. You really seem to be a nice guy! Keep up the excellent programs! As always, Happy Travels!
Hello John, about the price, turns out that for everyday brazilians that pay in brazilian currency it is really expensive since the GDP is actually very low and all products have at least 50% taxation.

Yes, this lunch is cheap, used to be more expensive here and we that living here gain in real (BRL), but come on in to know, Brazil is beautiful and have a great food 😋

To be honest Belo Horizonte is not touristic at all.
I know the city of Belo Horizonte and it is a beautiful, cosmopolitan, contemporary city with a very rich culture. The people there are very beautiful and kind! I loved living there!

Really ? hahahaa But Brazil has fancy and weird names to be honest. Minas means "mines" like the places you extract gold and ore and diamonds for example.Gerais means general. It literally translates to " All of the mines " or "general mines". In portuguese language It sounds very odd and weird like there is many other references that are quite funny in brazillian culture. Because in the past history of Brazil's discovery that area had an extensive extraction of gold ore diamonds crystals iron and everything else relates to minerals and metals soo they named the state after it.

If you are in Belo Horizonte yet, look for Central Market. I think the best place in Belo Horizonte. Just traditional food and culture.

@@aniquadros You're right, but it's an understandable mistake tho. English have "Kale" and "Collard" (both coming from the word "Cole") as words to describe different types of plants from the same family, it's an easy distinction. Brazilians mostly don't cultivate what english speakers call "Kale", so he probably doesn't know the distinction. We simplify calling collard greens "Couve" (which is really called Couve-Manteiga in Brazil) so he just tried to translate it, it's wrong as you said, but it's more confusing than the east and west mistake.

Hi Marcos you have to know the Central Market, the Pope's Square, the Pampulha Lagoon, the Horto Florestal (presepio do piripipau). All in Belo Horizonte, do not miss the Mineirão Stadium (second largest football stadium in Brazil). Brazil and Latin America) is close to the Pampulha Lagoon.

Lisa Jones praça da liberdade is a great place. My university is just next to it. A really good place to spend some time. And the liberty palace is there as well, a beautiful palace from (I believe) the XIX century. The inside is just gorgeous.

This is going to curtail the travel videos in a big way, unless Mark is primarily lending only his name to this venture. Running a restaurant, successful or not, is an 18/24, seven-days-a-week job. Hope it works out; dunno about stats in Thailand, but 6 out of 10 new restaurants in the US fail in the first 3 years.

Should have gone for Verdemar (supermarket), its a chain from Belo Horizonte with the best bakery/deli/imports of any chain I've been here in Brazil, also some of their stores have pizzerias, parillas, creperies and all the good stuff. Nice to see you enjoyed my city!

You are correct, all products in Brazil are expensive due to 50% taxations (locals call 'impostos'). GDP index is very low as well:(

hey man i'm from BH city, really like your videos, tips from a local: you should visit central market and have a "figado com jilo" (liver n jilo), praça do papa (the pope's square), mangabeiras, mineirão (tropeiro beans), pampulha's chapel, mirante do rola moça, always bring your kid to these places, he'll definately love it. keep it up, cheers!
