I have a wood burning tool very similar to the stencil burner. I also discovered a pack of clear plastic face shields that I purchased during the pandemic. I cut out an astronaut stencil for a painting I'm working on but I used a tiny pair of scissors instead of the burner tool. There were too many small cuts I had to make and the burner tool wouldn't have worked very well.
I use pellon to burn my stencils, it doesn't leave that burnt edge that it leaves on plastic. and like someone else mentioned in a comment, I use the stencil burner on top of glass.
Omg I have been doing mine on thick paper and only last for a while, This are much more natural organic an awsome. I am buying all the materials right now Thank you
If you burn them on glass they come out much cleaner. as was mentioned below.. I almost never make my own stencils since one of my friends makes them with a laser these days. and through the years ive gathered hundreds of dollars worth of stencils... Ironically i usually only use a handful.
@@TheAIRspace thank you for your response How thick should the mylar be? Should I put the mylar on top of a glass? Thats what you are saying? What is the name of the tip of the heat pen.
@wleonartistry Love the video Bill.🤘😎🎨 I know this is a few years back, but you can get super tight lines and more use out of the tips( before they wear out) if you burn the stencils on glass. We have a couple of 12 by 12 inch tempered we use that came out of a used display case 👍
Soldering irons .....just fine. Where you get the detail is in the tip. You want the smallest or sharpest tip you can find. You can even sharpen a soldering iron tip if you so chose
It would, someone mentioned burning on glass would help as well, I may experiment in the future, but I honestly have all I need for life at this point 🙂
10 mil would be my first choice. I rarely cut my own anymore, i have a huge stock of commercial made ones. and still some of my handmade ones which last a really really long time.
Thanks Tim. I have two artool shields and geralds texture stencil.. Other than that anything I use is homemade. I just cannot see spending a fortune on some shapes : )
Hello, Bryan McGlothlin here. I'm pretty green with a lot of airbrushing technics. I've been around auto body old hotrod's I grew up admiring the masterpieces these artists are slinking out. depends where in the southwest are you? There are a bunch of custom graphics guys in texas. and california also. reaching out to someone in your region would be the way to go. someone established a little.
I believe ive been using 6 mil If you hit my kit page kit.co/wleonartistry it has a link in stencil material. 10 mil is nicer and I did have some here. But you can also link off the 6 mil to their other products :)
you could, however there are much better options for lettring. Personally i have a small plotter to use for things like that. But i have hand cut paper stencils before. However lettering stencils are best done with a sticky material. This is a good technique for textured stencils and freehand shields which is where mylar excels. One off stencils are crisper and better on other materials.
Im in the process of being able to add them. When I made this video I was a very new channel. Long story short amazon kicked me for being to small. I just today reapplied for amazon affiliates.. and should be able to get and post links again. Bear in mind this is an older video.
yes about that.. Amazon kicked me from the affilliate program. They said i was not an established channel yet. So all the amazon links are now dead or gone. I apologize. I am able to reapply there soon. However the mylar is easy to find. And the stencil burner as well. In another month or two I will be able to reapply and have their links again.
Also Rodney if you are in the states and one is local, hobby lobby sells stencil blanks, and a stencil cutter. The stencil blanks they have are simply mylar as well. Thanks for stopping by!

Pellon? What's that?
Bob Ross of Stencils 👌🏽
Thank you so much for this because I am new to airbrushing and like you say don't have any money so any pointers definitely help
Glad it was helpful!

this is the video i have been searching for, thanks for sharing
Glad I could help
Would it help to sharpen the tip to a finer point? If the tip had a thinner & finer point there wouldn't be so much wake from the burning if any!
It would, someone mentioned burning on glass would help as well, I may experiment in the future, but I honestly have all I need for life at this point 🙂
can a small solderring gun work.
yes its basically the same thing just different tips.
Love all your videos, they are just so helpful and amazing
Thanks!
Thanks for this. I'm new to airbrushing, and this is just what I needed
Hey glad to hear! Its one of my earliest videos.. i may have gotten better at tutorials since : )
Thank you. WHich thickness mylar do you prefer?
10 mil would be my first choice. I rarely cut my own anymore, i have a huge stock of commercial made ones. and still some of my handmade ones which last a really really long time.
gotta love your accent!

yes the souther USA standard issue! Cheers!
Great video Bill, very informative!!!

I have a 3d FDM printer, so I print stencils from black and white images, if you have access to a printer that is a really cheap option
Great instruction & info! tyfs honey!
You are so welcome

Bill,
What was the thikness of the mylar you were using to burn you stencils. Is it like 6 mil?
Thanks
Ken
i think it is 7 mil.. but it has been a long while.
What is the thickness of the Mylar?
I believe 7mil 10 is nicer. I believe there are links in the description. This is a fairly old video, from memory I believe that is what was used.
@@TheAIRspace okay good, I just ordered 10mm. Thanks 🙏
Hey Bill great video....what mil mylar do you find the best thanks again

Probably gonna seem like a weird question, but can you use the stencil cutter on paper? Or would it just cause a fire?
Nope but a good swivel blade or exacto knife can go right through paper. Aside from texture stencils and freehand shields I rarely use any stencils
wleonartistry thanks for the fast reply! That was really helpful!
Thanks dawg
Any time
Can you do text, letters?
you could, however there are much better options for lettring. Personally i have a small plotter to use for things like that. But i have hand cut paper stencils before. Stencils burn easier if you cut on a piece of glass
There is no links???
yes about that.. Amazon kicked me from the affilliate program. They said i was not an established channel yet. So all the amazon links are now dead or gone. I apologize.
