As an Ethiopian, a sea outlet is a massive issue for us, but we're tired of wars, and most importantly Eritreans are our siblings we don't want to fight
Literally any foreigner would struggle to differentiate between an Ethiopian and Eritrean cultures, because we're basically the same nation, different nationalities
And more than my fear for ourselves, I fear for Eritreans because their leader would conscript all the population, the Eritrean dictator will force his 5 million people to throw themselves into war, which would lead to the greatest humanitarian catastrophe and probably the bloodiest in the 21st century (which means that Ethiopia will break its own record)
If Ethiopia invades Somalia it will be a big reason for us Somalis to liberate our Somali region occupied by Ethiopia the Ethiopians lost to us in 1977 until Russia can to their rescue so they know to not fuck with us
As a portuguese, thank you for the Past very good relations. I wish the best for Ethiopia
Sounds like Russia and Ukraine
Almost the same Culture, very similar language, the same religion, etc but still in constant war
@@daviroza4700 we obviously care for our Somali brothers in Ethiopian Somali land and outside, I have a lot of Somali friends here in addis as well, but You Somalis think you someone in east Africa but you are really nothing in comparison,
as to our Eritrean brother we love you and what ever the government decides we will support you independence
Gives a funny perspective if you look at Russian/Ukrainian war like that
Today's Fact: In 1978, a man named Joseph Figlock was struck and injured by a falling baby; a year later, he was walking in the same spot when the same baby fell again and struck him, but both survived.

I watched RealLifeLore during my lunch break at work up until a few years ago when the pandemic got me out of the office. I rediscovered your channel a couple weeks ago to see you went from ten minute videos on things like some crazy idea to dam the Mediterranean Sea to almost hour long videos exploring complex and long running issues. Kudos on the evolution.
Agreed. I used to watch RLL for those short random videos but the modern conflicts series has me captivated. I'm learning sooo much. And hope the channel continues to stay this route. I was actually hoping for a RUclips playlist to bundle all these videos together.
This is such a great way for an ignorant outsider to learn so much about the situation and the history-not only the video but the feedback and differing points of view of the Commenters. Thank you and good luck 🙏🏼
Ngl, this is like 85% spot on.
And I'm questioning myself on the 10% I disagree with / the 5 that just sounds off.
For such a messy history that's practically perfect. Wish there was more on the 93-02 years. Pretty much the stage being set for what we see today
Because this channel makes videos for Americans, you can see inaccuracies in almost all of the videos yet they are acceptable in general.
Like there is a video made by them about a potential invasion of Syria by Turkey, the channel tends to favour Kurds in that video since Kueds are their only ally in the region. Not the most accurate channel, just an introduction channel for ignorant Americans. @@FireeditsNow-jv8jf
You right what I don’t understand is those stupid RUclips channels tell half truth history without researching facts, they are irresponsible and ignorant people.

As an Eritrean, I am not necessarily against Ethiopia gaining access to Assab, but it must be through diplomatic agreements. Everything else is unthinkable.
We are siblings, how can we kill each other? It breaks my heart man.
As an Ethiopian my dream is to be united with eritrea again in some sort of United Republics of East Africa we belong together.
@@Sam_Guevenne As an Eritrean no such thing as unity with Ethiopians already tried it caused massive destruction on our people.

We Ethiopians seek development and modernity not wars waged by the few. I can't stress enough how much this country's political stance and history has been misrepresented enough. Did you just mention that Ethiopians just killed 2 million of their citizens?
Objectively, youre not being misrepresented at all. Your government does awful things to its people and its neighbors all the time.
As people, we do
As government, can we say "we"? Does it represent us?
Ethiopia cant survive without conquering Eritrea. You are ignorant if you are against this.
@@JaKingScomez Ethiopia can survive without a sea outlet, Ethiopia will prosper more with it, but we'll still grow without it, just if we have a good leadership
Bro, that was satisfying! Thank you for your time and research!
Including the historical context in the beginning really helps with understanding the current situation. Well done.
As an Ethiopian more wars will only set us back, no need to turn our Eritrean siblings into enemies for an access to a port despite how much we need it, specially when its possible to get it done with an agreement in which both countries could benefit.
Eritrea sea belongs to mother Ethiopia. I am sure one day we will get it back without trouble
You will not, you will only make yourselves suffer. There is nothing like Eritrean patriotism. You are not our mother or anything. We remember you as a colonizer who oppressed us. We have much better memories about Italy, as they built and modernized Eritrea. Ethiopia did none of these things. Only steal and kill people.
Learn to create a patriotism that is healthy and doesn't offend other countries. That's when you will start seeing success and blessings from God. But Eritrea will not be part of it. @@th8me103
@@th8me103you can't be serious. No country ever will want to lose land peacefully.
They tried for an agreement by relinquishing claims to the land that was in dispute under the current president. This extremely generous offer was a goodwill gesture to get port access. Yet their pathetic slavemaster dictator wouldn't do it. The man needs to be disappeared, as in yesterday.
@@th8me103 check your facts. We ERITREAN respect the sovereignty of independent countries otherwise the whole tigray was part of the kingdoms that used to exist in modern-day ERITREA until the kingdom of MEDRE BAHRI. based on this fact can we claim tigray is ours?

As an ex-Navy staff member that worked that Huge Antenna Farm at Asmara's Kagnew Station, it's very depressing to see these problems for a lovely people. If Eritrea provided Ethiopia access to Assab for half or less the cost of the Djibouti ports, it would be great for both countries, but that would require politicians with common sense, which is in short supply everywhere.
1 billion is nothing thats what djibouti is collecting from ethiopia annually
The problem is that you have to pay money If it's more You have Options like Right now Kenya and Ereteria and future Somalia But Ethiopia Doesn't wana to pay money abi ahmed clearly said We don't wna pay Money for Port he said Clear we will not be landlocked country that is enough You don't know The point Ethiopia Is lost already Abi ahmed Will Be Leading Ethiopia into destruction And Collapse soon

This video was better than I expected. I obsessively followed the tigray war while it was going on and wrote 2 research papers for school about it, and talked about it with my Ethiopian and Eritrean friends. You did a surprisingly good job explaining most aspects of the relevant parts of recent and ancient Ethiopian and Eritrean history without getting too many things wrong and oversimplifying much, which for such a short video I am very impressed with.
where did you find good information about the war, I watched like every time I remembered, but I never found more info than: it's still going.
This vid is like 3 Rick and Morty episodes in length if you cut out the credits.
@lordjjtheradiant1515 info on youtube was extremely sparse. Whenever I did see something here I watched it, but there wasn't much and it was rarely in depth. I mostly got info from news organizations, I relied on Al Jazeera more than I would've preferred since they are fairly biased, but their bias is pro-qatar so it shouldn't be too important for a conflict that doesn't involve qatar, but they covered it the most so I ended up using them a lot. I eventually started looking into Ethiopian news outlets, although it was hard to find that many that were in English, and as a non-Ethippian I had a hard time identifying all of the biases they probably had. It was easy enough to tell if they were pro TPLF or pro Abiy, but I'm sure there was more nuance I simply didn't notice. I did eventually notice that generally speaking, it was split between Tigrayans, Oromo, and anyone who favored decentralization on one side, and Amhara and anyone who favored centralization on the other side. This even applied to foreigners who focused on Ethiopia a lot. I remember reading papers by a Norweigan guy who clearly preferred decentralization, and despite being Norweigan so theoretically having no horse in the race, because he favored decentralization he portrayed Tograyans and Oromos positively and demonized Amhara.
@Karlach_ I know firsthand from trying to do presentations for papers that it's hard to make this topic short. I always had to cut out so much of what I found important, if I wanted to go into detail talking about even just the relevant history of Ethiopia and Eritrea leading up to the war I would probably take an hour or 2

As an Armenian this kinda breaks my heart, although I can understand the situation. I just wish that our brothers and sisters in Ethiopia and Eritrea are able, maybe with help of international help to solve this problem via diplomacy instead of war. Believe me when I say that, if Ethiopia takes part of Eritrea by force this will only harden their hearts and end in generational trauma and hatred.

The Somali region of Ogaden in Ethiopia has been given to haille sellasie as a gift just like Stanley gave Artsakh to Azerbaijan and they named it nagorno karabakh. We are tired of this nation honestly. If war this time, won’t be nice for Ethiopia considering its situation. It’s collapse is inevitable

If the leadership in Addis Ababa (Ethiopia) weren't arrogant who believe in using military force and showcasing their empty pride, then yes you are right Eritrean gov has always been willing to let them use our ports for commercial purpose because we view the people of Ethiopians (not the gov) as our brothers. However what Ethiopian gov is demanding is outright ownership of a port so that they can build a navy which we Eritreans will never accept!! not in a million years!! 1stly we won't give up an inch of our land for Ethiopia to own! 2nd we will never allow a foreign country to build a navy on our coast.

Everyone is thinking the same thing. "Quick, all the major arms exporters and military juggernauts are distracted! Let's start all the wars we fantasized about!"
The problem of starting a war when the big boys are distracted by their own wars is where are you going to buy your ammo and replacement weapons from? If the USA is committed to arming and supplying Israel and Ukraine and Russia has no guns and ammo to spare and therefore the prices of weapons and ammo has gone through the roof then you could find yourself in a very hard place in a few months when your army has run out of tank ammo and your solders just don't have the supplies necessary to continue the campaign..
As an Eritrean living in Ethiopia, I must say... what an absolutely spectacular video, hit the nail right on the head on pretty much all the topics, the history is accurate, the motives are accurate, and the sentiments are accurate.
Perhaps, one slight inaccuracy (which is something impossible to perceive without actually being on the ground) may have been the portrayal of the PM as an Ethiopian nationalist... While this is how he portrays himself and while it is what pretty much everybody, including myself, thought him to be in 2018; his actions seem to indicate otherwise, by that I mean: the restructuring of his entire leadership demographics to lean HEAVILY towards the Oromo ethnic group, outside of obvious blunders like appointing the leader of the Amhara region (on paper) to be someone who can barely speak the language, it's quite noticeable across all government offices and public institutions throughout the capital. To make matters worse, this ethnic based redistribution of public positions is inevitably followed by an EXTREMELY evident selective behavior towards the public looking to receive government services with Afan Oromo speakers having clear favor, which honestly is exactly what was happening before when other ethnic groups rose to power, though perhaps not as much in the open. Anyway, this behavior by the PM and his associates has led to the ostracization of his prosperity party, by pretty much all the ethnic regions, including the Oromia region who, rather ironically, sees the PM's actions as not being severe enough...... and I'm now realizing this comment is a lot longer than it ever needed to be.
Anyway, great video, love what you and the guys from Wendover are doing at Nebula. Keep up the good work.

The insurgency did not affect the Americans initially, but the U.S. did not support a separate Eritrea and that affected how the insurgency groups started seeing the U.S. as part of the problem preventing Eritrean independence or at least following (mandating) the UN resolution for federation with Ethiopia. One problem not usually mentioned was the initial independence groups were supported by both Russia and China who gave weapons, training and money. Remember the Ethiopian government tried to dismantle the Eritrean language, political system and absorb any thoughts of independence as a people and state. As for a war being inevitable between Eritrea and Ethiopia, I agree that it is a great possibility almost a “Manifest Destiny” for both countries.
I’ve been to what remains of Kagnew it’s sad because the US and Eritrea could have been strong allies if it was not for Dulles and the US position on Eritrean self determination.
US made and is still doing a strategic mistake by supporting anti-eritrean self determination it’s funny though to see them supporting ISRAEL against Arab nations even though it was big vs small and in eritrea ethiopia case was the same.
I too am a navy seal, 15th eagle division. I took out obama bin salmon.
Why didn't they fight against their colonizers Italy and England if they saw America as insurgents? Their movement for independence came after Ethiopia became a socialist country, which upset the USA. However, the USA made a big mistake by causing Ethiopia to shift sides during the war with Somalia. The USA held military ammunition that Ethiopia had bought from them, leaving Ethiopia with no choice but to seek aid from Russia. This led to Ethiopia becoming a socialist country at that time, which angered the USA. As a result, the USA and its allies supported rebel groups to fight against the regime, including the Eritrean independence movement. That's why, my friend.
@@HolaBruv what is "eritrean self determination"?
I can only imagine the amount of research that went in to this video.
Thank you for all your efforts.
Are you kidding me?! It's a rehash of prejudiced nonsense about Africa. The author of the script has clearly never lived in Ethiopia and seen how the ethnic groups interact as individuals.

Thanks for your research based analysis about Ethiopia.
Dear, What software do you use to create this video?
As an Ethiopian, I feel shame as to why we still can’t stop the bloody war as long as there is a chance to negotiate around the table peacefully. After all, we are the same people who still enter marrying as we have the same culture and religion. This isn’t to happen between the same brothers and sisters. This is a curse for the country to have such a bloodbath for nothing except fulfilling the interests of power mongers.
I have a great appreciation for those who do the video documentaries in such excellent quality.
Deberían crear alianzas y confederaciones en lugar de divisiones y perjuicios. Etiopía necesita puertos soberanos
Establezcan leyes antiracismo y antidiscriminacion étnica y verán la unidad de Etiopía

You are Ethiopian, but 🤷🏻♀️ still you don’t know Abiye Ahmed is real crazy !
@legesse what war are you repeating like a parrot? A statement regarding an outlet to sea was made by PM Abiye for discussion, the war drums are being drummed by the white boys who do not like peace and collaboration in Africa. Once again What War?
You know, considering Egypt's opposition to the GERD and how RLL explained that it could start a war between Ethiopia and Egypt, combined with Egypt being an ally of the United States, there's a case to be made for Russia to want to help Ethiopia take control of Assab in exchange for being able to use the port.
Russia is an Eritrean ally.
@@andrewrogers3067 their relationship is almost non-existent. Ethiopia and Russia on the other hand have a long history of allyship.
@@andrewrogers3067 Allies change whenever it's convenient. The bigger issues here is whether Ethiopia needs Russia. Russia is in no shape to provide any help at the moment, Ethiopia probably have the military strength to take the port on their own, and allying with Russia might draw unwanted attention.
Africa's reliance on Russia is going to get you the worst version of colonization you've ever experienced. You think they're different, and you're right, just not different in the way that you want.
Egyptian here, there's absolutely no chance of a war over that dam. Our leaders have done absolutely nothing about it for over a decade, and it has already been fully built and partially filled. Also, we're preoccupied with wars in every single one of our neighboring countries, gaza, sudan, and Libya

The history is correct but the allegations that Ethiopia is preparing to invade Eritrea is insane.

As a Kenyan to this far idon't see the reason why Eritrea holding strip of land that buffer Ethiopia from accessing the outside world, either give in peace or war Ethiopia must claim Access route
Yes ethiopia should get access to a port and stop getting bullied over a small nation , the have a ridiculous elongated port that Europeans created for them , and thy sleep at night peacefully knowing this fuckary ?
I'm always impressed by the locals' reactions to these videos.
I suspect Ethiopia will learn to its regret that it is a whole lot cheaper to pay for port access than to try to take it by force.
they know this already. Abiy is building a useless presidential palace that costs more than the White house. They know. This is about prestige.
Well, one is a one time payment, the other is an annual payment to an effective Monopoly. They have strong incentives to take military actions. If Eritrea were smart, they should try to get the Russian navy to come. Or they need to dismantle the port to make it less appealing to take. But in either case: they seem not to be interested in offering acceptable harbor fees for a harbor no one else uses and they didn't build up themselves.
Russia will help Ethiopia! They sell tanks to Ethiopia! 🇪🇹❤️🇷🇺
@@chaosXP3RT Russia couldn’t help
Armenia and it’s a lot closer to Russia than Ethiopia.
it's not a one time payment. Eritrean patriots will never give up, as their ancestors fought many decades, form the 50s-90s just to be free.
Abiy is trying to end like Haile Selassie. He might even lead his country to a future that Jugoslavia suffered. Fano might use the war to take him down. There is no internal unity in Ethiopia. There is internal unity in Eritrea. @@trillionbones89

Just finished my geography college class and have a new found appreciation for this study. As a kid, I thought it was boring but now it’s mixing pot of either wars or ancient conflicts that are leading to wars
My grandparents on my mothers side immigrated from Eritrea to Germany as war refugee's in the 70's to escape this conflict. At the time, Germany was still making reparations to improve its international image on the world stage following ww2, so they took in many war refugee families & also many people from Türkiye, etc., as Germany also needed many people to rebuild its economy + infrastructure.. not to mention that Germany was literally still split into two countries; the Allied NATO nations put a lot of pressure on West Germany and its economy to rebuild as quickly as possible, compared to the Soviet controlled East Germany counterpart of the Cold War era. My mother grew up in West Germany & met my father who was an American servicemember stationed in Germany through the Army in the late 90's - early 00's. I just separated from active duty Air Force myself 2 years ago.. just wanted to provide you some context as to how these types of conflicts can deeply impact families. Keep using that TA & try to commission if you can (or GI Bill if you're out already). Good luck & Aim High.
AmeriKKKa is behind this
Humanity will never elarn anything from the past, it's so frustrating. Throwing millions of lives away for nothing.
I heard what you assumed will happen but as an Ethiopian I tell you there will not be any invasion whatsoever. Ethiopia is signing an agreement with another neighboring country to have a port access. So much for your doom and gloom prediction

I remember when it looked like major wars were a thing of the past.
I miss before 2020
It's hardly Eritrea and Djbouti's fault that Ethiopia is going through this.
Simply the ppl in Eritrea and Djibouti has THE SAME tribe in ethiopia, ethiopia is 120mil ppl , those two countries ? Eritrea has 4mil ? Djibouti has 1 mil ?
So a same ppl that used the same port as a way of importing for centuries , suddenly after European invasion, the ports are taken , and ...formed its own country by colonisers ,
.again the. Same exact tribes and the majority of them are in ethiopia ,
Ethiopia made colonisers sign a deal they'll give back the ports years later ,
So when colonisers left , Eritrea rejoined ethiopia , and Djibouti ? It was going to rejoin another country aka somalia also rejected that and also claimed Djibouti for them ,
So therefore the just remained as their own little country and didn't join anyone ,
Eritrea hated rejoining ethiopia ,fought for decades and went back it's own country, since the countries are mad at eachother there was no trade relationship,
Djibouti on the other hand a less than a million ppl small port , charges ethiopia ridiculous amount of tax to Ethiopians to import anything ..like anything, which is super brutal , but ethiopia can't complain
So ethiopia ? Has the same tigray afar somali ... ppl that the other small port countries have ,
it was created by design , now no one benefits everyone is poor , small ports blocking the bigger ethiopia like the country with the most population of there own kind ,
Basically there was a country called ethiopia that was created 3000 yrs ago because of the red sea port , n during colonisation they took away her port , n when they do that the tribes on that fake imaginary lines are the same
i cant watch this without thinking about the ”every RLL video be like”-video. That shit really made me rethink my life choises lmao.
I appreciate the effort went to into making this video, it's immensely informative and educating, even though I'm from this region, both from Somalia and Ethiopia, this is really eye opening unfolding, but one country to capture another country by force is deplorable act, but the information provided here is priceless.
All countries are formed and maintained by force. You can't escape this brute fact of the world. If Ethiopia can't gain access to the sea by diplomacy, they can go for it by force with those kind of numbers.
