i mostly agree with what you’re saying but the yung lean point makes no sense, having an inside joke within a fanbase has nothing to do with the interpretation of what they are a fan of. People comment Barry Dillon because it’s kinda funny and that doesn’t effect the art lean has created.

I agree. This is a point I basically kinda thought out but regretted after posting. I honestly think a better example is with sem fans commenting abt how greasy he is and stuff. I totally get inside jokes but sometimes fans will comment “drop album pls” or random jokes on serious posts or artists other projects. I.E. carti posting about narcissist and nobody caring. Imo this is insanely disrespectful especially when the artists work is very serious.

@xcissor no i totally agree with this, especially when memes are kinda the way a lot of people find out about new music nowadays, it taints how people view the artists and it become part of the narrative in magazines and shit as well. i also think it’s disrespectful when people bring it to the artists comment sections, not keeping it within just the fandom (say on reddit or some twitter group). it’s like people just treat the art itself as one big meme, it’s tiring. and kinda adjacent to the femboy jokes are the "drain this gang that" kinda oversexualized vulgar jokes which just feels even more cringe cus it's so antithesis to what their art is, if that makes sense. like memes can for sure be great when it actually is inside jokes that references stuff in their art etc, but often i feel like it's jokes just poking fun at or disrespecting them and the art, made by outsiders looking in or "fans" who really don't understand it, they're just in on it for the meme or the trend.

@xcissor when your 'fans' are making stupid ass jokes about for you dress or your music it probably doesn't feel good. Bladee is trying to spread a meaningful message and then there's some kids on tiktok saying "yall wonder if bladee and ecco2k ever had gay sex". Like it's not funny and it's honestly kind of disgusting.

I’ve been saying this for years. But like you said with Yeezus I remember being the only person in my school who loved it but everyone hated it. Mainly because I was so driven by art and understanding it’s motifs and references. It made me interested in fashion and music and other forms of media to a point where I could never look at art at face value and always could find some meaning behind most that I enjoyed. Great takes here, it always makes me sad when I see people criticize rather than investigate

  • @0nyx99

you make great points and its honestly sad. i feel like because of how extremely accessible everything is nowadays and how chronically online a lot of kids have become because of covid, theres been a rapid decline of genuine curiosity and patiently waiting for things that dont exist yet. trends are moving at the speed of light, theres little to no sense of community in a lot of different areas, and i feel like no one truly gets excited about anything anymore. we have also become so desensitized to a lot of things happening on the daily. its crazy

I agree, I think it's much harder to see the value in things when it's so easily accessible and abundant. The internet shoves so many things in your face constantly that it's hard to parse through the noise and figure out what's worth sitting with. It's far too easy to get washed away in the endless stream of vapid entertainment

I’ve always felt this has more to do with people just being shitty and immature. Every underground artist’s fan base seems to be full of horrible people. The general populace does hate art though. They don’t view The Lion King as art, they view it as a Disney product, so anything that isn’t this easily digestible and culturally accepted product is automatically labeled as weird. The average person’s world view is actually insanely narrow and depressing.

100% agree. I remember the night when WLR dropped, and I skipped so many tracks mindlessly. I didn't even give them a chance. Looking back, I almost feel guilty. Seeing the influence of WLR and how it continues to shape music in general blows my mind. I saw it in other comments and I'll reiterate, it all seems to come down to accessibility. With the new age of technology we can become picky chicken nugget eating children with the content we consume. Different as a concept has shifted from being innovative to "mid", at the least in the music world. This video was a great reminder of the fact that art is always changing and we as consumers need to embrace that.

    Great video Matt.
This is something I think about a lot and don’t understand. I generally have two main questions adjacent to this
    1. I have a lot of friends who are general hip hop fans (post Malone, Kanye, J cole etc) who whenever I manage to get them to listen to a Carti song claim how bad it is and he’s just yelping on the mic. And the baffling part to me is how they just blanketly claim it’s bad and not be at least a little interested in it or at the minimum appreciate that he is trying something new. I could understand if it was semetary and he only has 100k listeners and is small. But someone like carti who has so many fans, how you could just think that all these people just like “trash music” and be happy with that answer. Every time I find some new artist that I initially don’t understand I am so curious to try to find out why ppl like it. because there will always be at least one small group that every piece of art pertains to. And I am able to at the least appreciate that the person is trying something creative.
    2. I will never understand the people that get ready for the next lil baby album that sounds the exact same as the past 4. How can you not be at least a little curious what’s out there or wish for your artist to do something new. Sure I want another eversince or unknown memory, but I know that those artists have moved on and as long as they are trying something new I am excited. Sure you can say that people just don’t care enough about music, but I just don’t see how they aren’t at least a little more curious

    • @whatatimetobealive524

Bro it fucking drives me nuts when people are giving rave reviews for a new Drake or Lil Baby album, like it's the blandest most commercial shit in the world how are you possibly so emotionally invested in that when there is so much other, actually profound art to pour your emotions into. Like these people are legitimately excited about a Drake song called "Pussy and Millions". Wow so relatable to us common folk right? And people will let that be their fav song of the year or some shit. Really baffling to me.

  • @nicdelmundo5687

great insight, i love this societal commentary mixed with musical genre discussion type of video. My two cents is that some people are raised in very ignorant environemnts where a sense of curiousity is not nurtured in them from a young age. I see it differently from you however. The fact that they are even clicking on the video in the first place shows they have some modicum of interest in the art you say they are reviling. But imo something had to bring them there in the first place. Even if you are hating you are still exposing yourself to it, meaning the creator is still getting streams and maybe one day you will warm up to it. Heck I even seen people who shit on these artists own merch from them. Trolls are people that secretly like something and deflect by hating on it. Yes these people are twenty etc but they still have time to come back and check it out especially as nostalgia grows for it as is so often the case in the music industry. Hating is form a flattery, as humans we are subconsciously attracted to things they find weird, even if they express it as criticism. Eventually the time will come when this too gets normalized and accepted to the point of being deemed as good art. Remember when picasso was thought of as trash? For some people the only way to reconcile their interest in this strange artist is to make fun of them,. Were living in the meme era, where peoples default mode is irony. As art gets increasingly werid, people form a love hate relationship with it. I.e. massive balenciaga puffer memes. And Ive seen so many people make light of their affinity for drain gang by making memes about them or clown on them online as a way of showing you care. alot of it is self aware ribbing because people who enjoy art know how it looks from the outside. Not a bad thing not to take yourself too seriously. I think thats peoples criticism with ar tfigures like Carti or. ian Connor , they think they are special or something and then jump the gun. In conclusion, people like the underdog, whether they outwardly admit it or not. The artist is still receiving visibility, any publicity is good publicity. Nowadays no one cares what people put time into but thats a given across the. board as we lose proximity to the act of making and our attention spans dwindle.

totally agree with this bro, especially with the balenciaga show. It just makes me sad that the art form I am most passionate about being fashion, runway fashion is so easily dismissed by people who don't think about what they're looking at. It makes me not want to consume any fashion media anymore just because of how sad I feel looking at the reactions. It just makes me not want to design clothing to be consumed or sold to other people and I especially don't want my basic clothing to be worn by the same people who hate the haute couture side, the important side, without a second thought. All in all it just makes me sad people refuse to even look at something different to their own comfort zone.

I think what frustrates me the most is how dismissive general audiences can be to new sounds, styles, lyrical themes and deliveries, etc. Social media has made it so much easier for underground musicians to breakthrough to the mainstream with algorithmic marketing on platforms like tiktok. The issue is that these platforms are not build for these artists. While there are so many people who love music and want to understand as many styles of music as possible, the average music consumer is simply not going to be that person. There's a reason why the same bland pop songs end up with millions of streams across streaming platforms. Most people generally are not passionate enough about music to stray from the mainstream and as a result, whatever manages to emerge to the surface that stands out from the rest that float on top is going to recieve criticism for being different. I don't generally think there's a problem with people who don't stray from the mainstream. I'm not a fan of movies for example, so you'll never catch me at an avant-garde film festival, you'll only catch me at an occasional screening of a new buzzworthy box office hit. This doesn't mean that I should trash on films that I don't personally understand or have an interest in. But unfortunately social media has created a space that makes it so easy to complain about pretty much everything, even if deep down you really don't care all that much.

On an opposite note. I think it’s interesting too to think about how just through music and the aesthetics that they give off, music artists can prove themselves as genius and creative thinkers. For example, at this point carti has proven to me that he knows what he is doing and I have full trust in him that the next thing he puts out will be creative and I will enjoy it because every time he pivots it turns out to be creative and enjoyable. Instead of having to be a painter or writer, random people off the street or suburbs can prove to be incredibly reliable and genius creative thinkers. And anyone in the world can be this way given the state of the internet.

I can understand why carti doesn't like to do much for his fans. Most of them, at least on his subreddit are making fun of absolutely everything he does, it's crazy. He made merch and I will admit it's not Amazing but it's not bad either. And everyone calls it trash. They make fun of how he speaks in interviews or dms, about how he's a deadbeat father, how he dresses, his son AND his persona isn't understood (which is meant to be a character he plays). They don't take him seriously. They think it's corny and just want new music, even though it's what makes him different and cooler than other artists. We should be happy he's doing anything at all instead of staying silent until he drops the next album. I hope he won't be scared to drop something experimental again.

I think it’s definitely all relative. As I’ve gotten older, I’ve learned to pause and reflect on what I see, hear, feel etc. So with art, music, fashion, design (and living in NYC has accelerated this btw), I can usually appreciate it for what it is even if I don’t really like it or it’s not my style. With that being said, I think a lot of artists and brands that are taking wild risks want and expect the hate to some degree. In my opinion, that means they’re doing something right. Your Balenciaga reference is on point - they have really zeroed in on their AUDIENCE.
Additionally, I believe that artists and celebrities who have gained notoriety AND are “edgy” (for lack of better terms) are always in the crosshairs for becoming Internet memes, jokes, etc. Look at Yeat for example. Just my 2 cents on the whole thing. But like you, I challenge my friends and others to take a step back before judging any sort of creative work.

You could reflect this back to how the trend cycle is completely out of wack. How people exact clothes or art to just be in infinite supply. Its people trying to gain social points off of appearing a specific way. People don't like new things until its trendy. People want individuality but they want to fit in, its a contradiction. We live in a society of conflict. People don't like the state of American society but don't do anything to support change. Change is not supported. Its a ouroboros.

I hate when people call Ride from Death Grips a "screaming homeless guy"
His writing alone is some of my favorite. It's rich with cryptic darkness and imagery, and the fact that he's able to perform with the energy and power it deserves is so awesome. Imo his contributions are what makes Death Grips such a unique and strong project
It's so disrespectful to reduce his work to "lol crazy homeless guy." Don't call yourself a fan if you do that.
I also think there's a racial undertone to it. His vocals are punk/metal influenced, but I don't see people listening to white-fronted bands like IDLES or Nails and saying the singer sounds like a mentally ill person on the street. Maybe it's some kind of gatekeeper response to seeing a black guy doing punk/metal in an innovative way, or maybe people just see a black guy raising his voice and see that as a threat. Either way, it's fucked up

ok this is a serious -cancel all my meetings someone's wrong on the internet- kind of situation.
but your take is complete and utter garbage lol
    - you seem to an art fan. you like to research the background, the context and the meaning of the art forms that you consume.
    - people are different, most of them do not deeply specialize in anything (which is not necessarily a bad thing, that's just how we were built)
    - the few that do specialize, will not necessarily specialize and care about art. There are many other things to explore, fuss and be particular about.
    - every human has a limited capacity on what they can care about, caring about things and being curious actually consumes a lot of energy.
    - people like familiar things, familiar things feel safer.
    - you assume that every one should do the same as they do, otherwise they're lazy, or they "refuse" to understand it.
    - if you make money out of art then it's a job
    - that job is called 'entertainment'
    - if your job is to entertain me, you don't get to choose what I prefer and what I do not prefer
    - there is definitely value in placing your own character and vision into art
    - if you can place that vision while still keeping me entertained, you're good at your job
    - if you don't consider art to be your job then who cares if people like it or not?
    - you do not blame the masses for not understanding something, you blame the individual who was not clear in communication
