    interesting that you called the story twisted. as a girl who grew up very much like this album depicts, i remember always falling asleep to gruesome Murder, R*pe, Cannibalism stories that were playing on the tv in the living room at my grandma’s trailer. so for girls who grew up like her it was so desensitized for us that we can just spit out these gruesome art forms because they really represent the raw stuff that we were exposed to.

    Aww, you had to go straight from Ptolemaea to do your last college final?! That song just rips your chest open. It’s like a deep plunge into the most primal fear women & femmes live with - that we’ll become prey. “Blessed be you, girl, promised to me by a man who can only feel hatred and contempt towards you.” Men fear that women will laugh at them, women fear that men will kill them.

    fun fact: she interpolated Journey's "Don't Stop Believin'" in "American Teenager". and whole story of the album is so amazing, including the cannibalistic boyfriend, nobody does it better than Ethel🛐 and Matthew Tomasi too (who produced Nicole Dollanganger's songs)

I’m so glad to see her getting love since none of my friends or family really listen to her and my pitch of “Preacher’s Daughter is amazing you’re gonna cry so much” didn’t really make the impact I had hoped for. So curious if you feel any differently about the thru-story after going back and looking through the story notes on Genius? I gave the album a listen straight through on its own and then another one while reading the summary and lyric notes at the same time and it just made everything hit SO much harder. The summaries are all written by Hayden/Ethel and are part of the overarching story that will have 2 more albums (and that she's also writing full novelizations for).

    I love seeing someone else’s reaction to this! I just listened to this album for the first time and it’s just …SO heartrending. American Teenager is so much more poignant when you know the end of her story. Those soaring vocals, the longing and pain in the lyrics and grand instrumental swells throughout this album, are all so emotionally searing. The comparisons to Lana Del Rey are interesting because they both pull from similar aesthetics and themes, but Ethel Cain does it with genuine depth and emotional heft. Where Lana calls her lovers in her songs “daddy” and plays at Lolita themes, Ethel actually addresses childhood abuse. The glamorized stories Lana tells, it’s like Ethel’s songs are the reality behind where that mythologizing gets you.

    • @clarisselarue151
      @clarisselarue151 Год назад +19

      Well I don’t think it’s fair to dismiss Lana like that since she’s dropped the aesthetic for a more brutal lyricism type of feel. Both are very good but Lana’s music definitely deals with abuse and addiction in a very candid way later on.

      @@clarisselarue151 I agree with you, these women shouldn’t be pitted against each other, or at least rarely compared. Lana paved a new path, so will Ethel. They may share similar themes but their approach differs and I feel as Ethel grows we’ll continue to see more of her individuality. Ethel is new to the industry-- sadly it’s an inevitability that she’d be compared to other female artists. Smh.

    I had heard some of her songs here and there these past few months but I have been in full on hyperfixation on her for like 3 weeks now

    Though the album is about a fictional character and story it’s a reality for so many young girls so many that we don’t even know of and may never have what happened to them come to light. You can not listen to ptolemaea and not have a sick stomach putting you in the shoes real time of what’s going on in their head right before it’s impossible not to have that empathy I genuinely wish all men could listen to it to feel what our very genuine raw fear feels like, to have empathy for women.
    My dad made me sit down as a kid and watch the true crime channel to know and understand that not all people are good you can’t just trust everybody and I’m glad he did I was almost taken as a kid myself this old man in a red truck slowly followed me while I was walking to a friends stoped the truck next to me my heart sunk and the first thought in my head was I was gonna be another one of those little girls and I saw him hop out of his truck and I booked it all the way to her house thankfully not too far and he sped off. The police came an hour later but they never found him I had to be walked to and from everywhere I was so scared I would actually get taken next time. And years later I realized my fears were warranted I looked up all the child s** offenders and my neighborhood was so chock full there was one every 10 houses and we lived next to a school…
