Normally with thin sheet metal applications similar to this, I will overlap the two pieces (new and old metal), secure / clamp everything as close to final positioning as possible, perhaps throw on a tack or 2, and then cut the entire seam in through the overlap which leaves a butt joint with perfectly mirrored sides and a gap no bigger than the thickness of a thin cut off wheel, which even that can most likely be brought to zero with the right amount of carefully applied "tap tap tap-ah-roo's." It’s why I get every job in WRITING. I make a little contract with every customer.
