- Part 1 here: • Making Doc Holliday's ...
The second of a two-part episode. My take on the gun leather props worn by actor Val Kilmer (as gunslinger Doc Holliday) in 1993's "Tombstone". A truly great western film. This is called the "Huckleberry Rig" in some circles. The first is the cross draw holster and cartridge belt used in the epic showdown between Doc Holliday and Johnny Ringo.
Stamps used on the holster:
Craftool D617, 701009, C431, P206, 347
Please tell us you are mentoring apprentices. Your old style of craftsmanship and artistry must NOT be allowed to go the way of the Buffalo.
It was such a nice treat to see someone make a video of finally making the Tombstone shoulder rig.
Good job!
Shoulder holsters seem to take a lot of work to to get them to hang just right for the user, and everyone seems to want something different. You did a great job, very nice rig.
Your and excellent craftsman. That holster is beautiful.
Beautiful work.!!
Wirklich Super gemacht! Bin begeistert. Auch die Art des Videos ist für mich ideal, da ich fast kein Englisch verstehe. Vielen lieben Dank 👍👍
You Sir do incredible work! Watching your videos is interesting, intriguing, calming, relaxing, entertaining and nostalgic. My family actually had a leatherworks establishment than operated during the height of the Old West era; all it took to kill it was the Great Depression. I hope to someday, perhaps in retirement, scrape up some money to build myself a small shop and in some small way resurrect it. In the meantime however I will more than likely be contacting you for a holster or two or three or five for my open carry. Thank you for sharing yout incredible talent and beautifully representing our culture and history.
Thanks for watching again!
Beautiful Craftsmanship 👍👏👏👏
Very beautiful work. Glad to see something still made in the USA.
Thanks a lot for subscribing!
I commented on Facebook i was looking for a Rig for my Uberti Cattleman 45lc , a Gent from Michigan said if i pay the shipping i could have a Rig he can't seem to sell, I said sure why not, within 2 weeks a box arrived inside was a El Paso Saddlery "Hellfire" double Rig, I sent him double the cost of shipping
Nice job.
I agree, I dont care for the strap across the front either.
Thanks for showing this one.
Thanks for watching!
You are absolutely right about the front/upper attachment being relocated on the movie rig; pics show an unused slot, just like your finished rig.
It just ended up being more truthful to the movie original; all good work! 😁
Nothing makes my day more than a new post by you!
Awesome! I've been waiting for this part 2!
Nice work!
Nice job👍
I really appreciate the knowledge.
Thanks for watching!
I really enjoyed the videos. I have used many of these tools for over 4 years back at a time I was young and stupid and visited the state house. Now in my 50's I am really thinking about trying it again.
Love this rig. Looks great to.
Nice job! Good looking holster!
Thanks 👍
Another very cool video. I never get tired of watching, your craftsmanship is awesome and I would very much like to see your version/improvement to this style (no front strap). I am a big single action fan and have a few custom belt holsters for my pistols but I don't have a shoulder rig.
Excellent work as always! Please consider making a pattern (even just a PDF pattern) that we could purchase once you finesse it. I am willing to bet you would sell a lot of patterns.
I agree
I've been down that rabbit hole looking for that same stamp. I also bought those same Tandy stamps. I've had a nice blown up picture of the holster from the auction site, I just haven't tried to make the holster yet, maybe someday! You do great work and I enjoy watching your videos!
Wow that's a beautiful rig, I just found your channel, your a real artist
Just thinking out loud here, but a holster in that style of a 6" barrel 1911 would be a great piece of kit for those of us who cannot draw from a conventional shoulder holster, I like how it brings the gun further forward.
Love your work!!!
Excellent video. Craftsmanship is superb. Cheers!
Very nice work...looks great
Thank you very much!
I like it. I think adding the brown to the black adds a slight antique look to it.
Beautiful looking rig
You're amazing, this is beautiful
I tried to make one of these for my New Vaquero.
I failed miserably . Yours looks much better 👍👍
thank you!
Very cool. I dont think they were overly concerned about concealing back then. That is perfectly "badass" right there!
Got my holster in and you do great work
That is a very nice looking rig. Like yourself, I have never been fond of the strap across the front. I will look forward to seeing if you find a solution to this issue. Thanks for the video.
great vidio sir love the work you do this is an awsome holster
Great video!!! I enjoyed watching. Thank you for sharing.
Awesome
Not sure if there is a better design for you but, it is a handsome piece, bar none. I'd wear it!
Thanks for watching!
Nice work, even if it did not come out as you initally planned. Life is an iteration.
Btw, your videos are so much better with the natural work noise sound. (I know you like that music)
Anither example of top level work. You're a lot of fun to watch.
Excellent ,! I just bought the same skiver from Tandy as well , works great ! Your the first I've seen it used . I make tool bags for bikes though ! Like watching your videos! Gives me ideas and have learned a lot from you . Thank you . I'm always trying to better my work .
Yeah, still learning its quirks. I shimmed mine as it had some play in the mechanism. Was planning to do a short video on it.
Truly beautiful!
There you go. Pictures!
Thanks of watching!
Really like this one…looks a set back Kodiak rig and the belly strap would be great for horseback riders. Your efforts in front and behind the camera are much appreciated
I don't care for the strap across the front either. I had an old uncle mike's nylon shoulder holster that never fit me well. The nylon strap always slipped the plastic adjustment buckle and the whole rig would start flopping around. I dug through my tack until I found a leather strap which I fit across the front to try to stabilize it better while a horseback. (Really did not help all that much.) While riding one day after my new adaptation, my horse threw a shoe so I stopped to remove the loose right rear shoe. The horse tried to pull the foot away and then shoved it under the strap, loose shoe and all, clinched nails included. I was then caught and loosely attached to the flailing foot until the strap broke, which I was grateful for, this resulted in a ruined shirt, some slight bruising, a few deep scratches along with a puncture in my belly was all it cost me. Ropes, straps and loose-fitting belts can be an added danger when working with livestock.
This is an "old west" style of shoulder holster. I've seen pictures of a similar design in a reference book. I used to have one years ago that had two 'yolks' over each shoulder and connected high across the shoulders in back. Very comfortable. But kinda necessitates having layered clothing to conceal. And were I live it's usually too hot for that.
@@RoadAgentLeather Certainly know about hot weather here. After my mishap I remove any belts/holsters, including coats, vest or any other items that might foul when dealing with horse's feet in particular. Even the best of them can suddenly do something out of the norm.
I've always loved this set-up.
I didn't realize until recently that his Colt Lightning was just stuck in his vest pocket. (or pants pocket, depending on the scene.) I always thought he had a second, left hand draw holster for it.
I've watched that movie so many times; always noticing new details I hadn't before.
@@RoadAgentLeather It never gets old. I think I could quote the whole script.
Nice job bro,it came out beautiful.
Thanks!
I'd love to have a shoulder rig like that . I'd especially love it if I could have the matching cross draw ammo belt in the same style as the shoulder rig.
Amazing talent.
Thank you!
Very nice
that 'extra slot' you cut for the strap could also be used for a trigger gaurd/saftey strap over trigger when holstered.
Beautiful👌
Super job très esthétique
Thanks for subscribing!
Great job.
You should pick up a set of copper rivet setters. They finish the front and back beautifully.
Muy buen trabajo👍👍👍
Nice work...
Awesome work.
Have you tried contacting Sam Andrews / Andrews Custom Leather? I know he made a few movie rigs, he might know a thing or two about those.
Dang nice rig.
Great job! 😁☺💯👍🌺🍀🌺🍀🌺🍀
I honestly think that’s a better rig then what John Wesley Harden had. But still I’m a bit worried on it getting caught on the suspenders
The TV show how it’s made has an episode on holster’s the guy is from Kansas I believe but anyway he makes holster’s for movies he might be the one that made this one so the questions you have about it he might be able to answer I can remember his name but if you watch the episode you can find out what his name is good luck and great work
If you would make a pattern to buy I would buy one.
This was a cool video. I stumbled on it. But I don’t know how it popped up.
The RoadAgent always comes through in grand style. Your excellence is supurb, Your an Expert Sir ! I look forward to all your video's , my hope is, I can in this lifetime become partially as high on that pedastol as I have you on.
Thanks!
Your work is amazing may I ask if you use pure neatsfoot oil and do let every thing dry over night. Thanks.
Thanks! I use pure neatsfoot. Dye I usually let dry overnight. The oil just needs a few hours.
Thanks
I take my hat off to you young man. Your right up there with all the greats. I wonder if you thought about researching the real Doc Holiday holster or is the movie idea more what your after? I do like your design. And your work is top quality. I want to borrow a couple of ideas.
Very nice. I am sure each one will evolve until you get it perfect to your satisfaction.
Now, isn't that a daisy?
Looks more like a Huckleberry!
Magnifique lolster à la doc holiday 😇
That is a sexy rig my man! Most excellent.
Excellent
I like it. I like it a lot.
Love your work wish you would show us how you make you patterns for the guns.
I actually have a video on making patterns. Check out my video history.
@@RoadAgentLeather i
looked cant find the video
What is that glue you are using? It's not Barge, but it's a contact cement??? Better than Barge? BTW, your work is amazing. So clean and meticulous. I've been known to rebuild a saddle once in a while, and make my own holsters and sheathes, but you have so much talent!
Thanks for watching! It's been a while, but I'm using either Aquilim 315 or EcoWeld. Both are low-odor, non-toxic, water-based contact cements. I'm definitely not a fan of Barge, Weldwood, or any of the other solvent-based cements.
Pretty awesome.. I wish you could make me one for my 45 Long Colt I just got.
P e r f e c t 🙏🏽
Your rig came out very nice. I must say, you got very close. Some of the tooling used has long been discontinued and almost near impossible to find. I actually make the studio rig right here in Tombstone and provide a COA if anyone is interested.
You have a website?
@@tacitus7408 Instagram is primarily where I share.
it's great!!!!!
Beautifully done! You should figure out a way to remove the front strap. That's the catch. The weight of the gun is the puzzle. Figure it out. and I'll be the first one lining-up at your door$$$
I bought one from DeSantis in the eighties. It had a really crappy piece of elastic, as the counter weight. It never worked quite right. It was for a 4" N Frame S&W in .41 Mag.
thanks for watching!
I would lick to see your adjustment to the shoulder holsters.
TIL what vinegaroon is. Very interesting. I assume it must create black iron oxides just like I do with black oxide coating on steel. Very interesting.
Something like that. Thanks for watching!
@@RoadAgentLeather you're welcome. your videos have become a new fascination for me.
Any chance we will get the templates for these amazing pieces of art?
can you do a video showing how you design your patterns
Two attachment points to a belt would negate the belly strap.
Thanks for watching.
I usually watch step by step craft projects at 2x speed. Not this one. Thanks
What was the solution you used to dye your project that was pretty neat and i would like to try that
Vinegaroon. Check out my video "Vinegar Black" I made a while back.
Great job!!!
I have a question, how do you determine where exactly to sew the skied part of the holster to the back part.
Thanks for subscribing! That was more of an eyeball thing: The two parts of the holster need to come together to properly fit the gun. So I test-fitted several times with the gun in place, then marked where the glue was to be applied.
How about a Bat masterson rig 👍
Hi, Great job as always. How thick is the leather you use for the projects?
Please in mm if possible.
Thanks!
I've noticed that when you use your stitch groove that it's on wet leather. Does this work better for you than on dry leather? I am always afraid of the leather bunching up under the groover blade
It's not really 'wet'. . . just 'hydrated' a little. . . sort of like when casing you allow the leather to start dry back to its original color. I found it helps
Thanks for watching. And thanks for the subscribe!
@@RoadAgentLeather I appreciate the information.
Couldn't you do that cool steel wool dissolved in vinegar trick to make it black?
cool how about the rifle case from mad jack on grizzle adams
As soon as I get a hold of a Winchester replica I'll make something for it.
What is the sewingmachine you using great job on the holster
It's a Cobra Class 26. I made a whole video on it a while back. You can find it on my channel's main page.
Do you sell patterns for any of your workx for us amateurs that don't know how to draw or don't draw very well
Who makes your skivving machine? Is it an antique, or currently manufactured?
Not an antique. You can pick it up at Tandy Leather
Would you be willing to sell a copy of your pattern?
Doc Holiday probably just used a lot of shoe polish.
Say when
Man I love your work! What machine are you using?
Thanks! Cobra Class 26
