MCX Spear (XM7): Barrel or Handguard Flex?

- There’s definitely more that could be done to confirm whether the barrel is flexing or not (I.e. Barrel mounted laser relative to upper receiver mounted optic or laser)
I think it’s pretty clear that the handguard is loose.

Being I'm watching this 4 months since it was posted, here's the correct information for the Spear heavy hand guards and barrel torque settings from Sig's Rep. 1st of all, the screws on the hand guard and barrel are "Torx Plus" and they use the correct bits, which are reinforced 6 star Torx Plus ONLY! The misinformation that has been spreading around here is the results of people with little to no experience in engineering or proper use of the tools. The torque settings for the small 1/4" retainers are 36 In lbs max and use purple or blue loktite and the 3/8" side retaining screws to prevent shifting are 45 In lbs. NOT 60 in lbs, which are more likely to break off at the head or strip out the socket of the screws. The barrel torque is 60-62 In lbs. Torx Plus drivers are from $20 an assorted set of inexpensive ones to $130 for top quality ones. Buy a relatively good quality Torque driver to avoid over-torquing the screws and creating an expensive gunsmithing project if you're not careful.
Good luck!
Thanks for the very in depth explanation!
Unfortunately, this Weapon system has some deficiencies that will probably be corrective with the next variant. I'm glad to help.
The only real issues are the handguard and sticky charging handles. Some people have the mag over-insertion issue, but its not as ubiquitous as the handguard flex.
I’ve been having a blast with my own. It works well and I just set the LAM further back onto the upper receiver to counter the handguard flex.
@@Sautuvas I decided to buy the Lancer mags to avoid the problem and work on a small stop added to the MagPul mags to keep it from happening if I go prone fast and smack it on a shooting mat or the ground. Not my fists choice for a rifle match run-and-gun in heavy category in 3-Gun!
It's just the rail flexing. That's why Midwest Industries and Geissele make the handguard rails with thicker material and bigger/ thicker barrel nuts. You get more weight but less of a problem with lasers and IR devices on the rail and flexing.
My LT had some flex, I took out the bolts holding the handguard then torqued them to 60 inch pounds and now there’s no flex.
I have the 13 in Spear in 308 and I could not move the barrel or the Handguard. I also don't have the mag overinsertion issue that the later batches of the spear seem to have. If anyone has the barrel flex or hanguard flex issue they should try tightening the barrel screws and make sure the Handguard screws are tight. It seems that for some rifles the screws for the barrel were not torqued to the correct setting of 60 inch pounds.
It seems that the shorter models dont tend to not have the issues or they are just not as easy to identify. It could have something to do with having a shorter lever arm to torque on the handguard.
Well the Spear LT and the Spear are pretty different in design
That range looks like the Missouri department of conservation range near Clinton Missouri. I think its called golden valley?
Lots of ranges show up in MO if you check google lol
@@Sautuvas uh, yeah.....
nice doxx
So glad I have an HK MR762. I hope the handguard issues get resolved. I would like to get the 1 or A2 version. I think one charging handle makes more sense too.
The MR762 is in its prime right now. It has been worked on and altered for more than 10 years now.
I think the Spear will also get its incremental improvements. I also foresee them removing the T charging handle or including a delete for it. We have already seen that certain newer models delivered to the US Army lack forward assists compared to the originals that were being tested.
Put the Arisaka zero retention solution on the rifle and no more hand guard movement.
I’m not sure if they have they available yet for the .308 Spear. I was talking with those guys to see if they would be making one and it seemed like it was still in development
@@Sautuvas Thanks for the insight. Yes, I only know about the Spear LT availability. It works.
I remembered hearing about this around the time they first came out
I really hope this isn’t what idiots are calling “barrel flex”? Dudes really never heard of barrel whip/harmonics? Are they complaining of that or some wiggle in hand guards
The issue is that some rifles are coming from sig not being torqued to the correct setting.
Even Lucas had issues with his
@@boygonewhoopdataZZ you'd think that sig would quality control these before shipping them out to people.
You really can't do this at 50 yards and say anything about performance past 50 yards. The difference in accuracy between 50 and 100 yards can be different, let alone anything else. The barrels shouldn't flex like this in the first place.
@touqasbonquishes9781 it's both unfortunately and SIG has said as much.
Very helpful.
Glad you think so!
I never touch the barrel on any of my firearms including my mossberg 500 pump shotgun. #1 is why touch it? There is a place on the firearm for your hands, thats where they go. #2 i prefer to lessen oils and salts on hands to the barrel to lessen chance of rust.
If you only could afford one rifle between the MCX
Spear Lt 11.5 inch which I heard has a barrel issue and guard rail issue or the Noveske afghan 4 14.5 inch
which would you pick?
I have never fired or held a Noveske. I’ve heard that they are excellent rifles though. If I had an MCX Spear LT (without the barrel flex) and a Noveske sitting on a table infront of me, I would pick the Spear. If any gun had confirmed barrel laxity then I would immediately avoid it.
@@Sautuvas I’m ma have to look into the spear Lt more I heard they are really good but just wanna know how reliable they are especially for the price they asking for I don’t mind paying well I want to know is it worth it?
@@darkdre7 Well I have the full size Spear (308win) and experience with a Virtus (300BLK). I do not have a Spear LT. I REALLY like the Virtus and the Spear LT is basically a lighter version of the Virtus. If you already have an AR15 just get the Spear, no need to get another AR15. If you don’t have an AR15, get an AR15 instead. I would only get an MCX over an AR15 if the parts became more common than AR15 parts
@@Sautuvas I had a ar15 m&p but it ran its course lol I wanted to get a new one and I keep hearing about the spear I’ve shoot the Noveske but not the spear yet but I’m hearing the issue with the barrel and guard rail it has going on
@@darkdre7 you could always get a new upper from a different brand if the lower is still functional for your AR15. You could even get an MCX Upper. That way you don’t even buy a new gun technically
What foregrip is that?
Magpul AFG
lmao there's that SIG quality
well anykinda moovment on the barrol or handguar IS NOT GOOD.
Its worse to have a wiggly barrel than handguard. Neither is great, but is a preference
torque the handguard bolts correctly and it will not move.
Its the barrel not the hand guard
Place the barrel under a car and try to lift it, same with the handguard. which bends first?
