    Those minifee recasts are in most cases better quality than the real deal. They have no seamlines and other marks at their bodies, maybe because they're machine made.
    I bought a doll from aliexpress exactly like this one and noticed her knee cap cracked after two years of having her. I wrote to the seller and they said to just pick anything from their store and they will send new knees for free. I was positively surprised about their customer care.

    I feel like you let yourself be FAR too influenced by the whole "recast" thing with this review... People have obviously scared you about making this video and having bought a recast. And I get that - it's scary knowing that people might hate you for the content you are going to create. But if you watch a few tons of RUclips videos about BJDs, about casting, about the different types of BJDs and the different companies and such, about how wigs are made, what the wig caps are for, how the dolls are strung and painted, how to put the eyes in and change their position etc etc etc... You'll see that what you have there is actually a lovely example of a good recast. Yes, recasting is morally dubious. Yes, recasts are hated. And yes, what you have there is 100% a recast of a Minifee Chloe. That being said, you have a lovely doll in your hands and most of the things you think are dubious (the resin smell, the "wonky" eyes, the articulation) are a part of any BJD - not just a recast. On the contrary, many recasts are better made than the originals, since some recasting companies sand the mold lines better and have less flash and air bubbles. It's all about the quantities they produce - the prices being lower, they produce them in higher quantities.
    So yeah... Overall I respect your dislike of the whole recast thing. I get what you mean and I get why the very notion of having a small mutiny in your comments has scared you so much. But I just wanted to point out to you that what you received is actually a nice doll and that hopefully you are still going to enjoy her.

    Just FYI: there are legit artists and companies in China too, not just the countries you stated. And yes, even recast dolls are painted by hand. Not every doll from China is a fake. There are just some bad companies. In fact most Asian BJDs are manufactured in China.
    Also this has been mentioned but it's standard for BJDs to have s-hooks, Minifees have them too (but they're partially obscured by the neck mechanism). Minifees also have at least 4 different bust sizes, so bust size alone is not an indicator of authenticity.

    That face sculpt is definitely a Minifee Chloe recast. But I don't know what you're talking about when you say a head having a hook or a ribbon in it means it's a recast. I don't own recasts and every doll I own has an S hook just like the one this doll has, and some legit companies put a ribbon in there to help you pull up the hook and remove the head. I always use a ribbon or something similar to take off the head of all my dolls. Saying something like that is going to scare people when they get a totally legit doll and make them suspicious that it's a recast.

      Actually not true, quite a few artist dolls also have a ribbon, my Dust of Dolls has a ribbon and she is 100 legit, it had to do with the factory that casts them also, many artist dolls are casted by a factory and sent back already assembled.
      A minifee is supposed to have a neck mechanism, not an S hook, so that alone is a huge giveaway!
      Also some brands just dont pose well and some are what we call "kicky" (when the part snaps to a position) many legit dolls are like this and its super common when they are new ^^, her eyes can be fixes be repositioning them inside the head, recasters have a habbit of the dead fish eye look and its strange!

    Honestly, BJDs are so pretty, but they cost so much. Even very small ones can start at $200-$250. I do feel like there can be a divide amgonst the haves and have nots with the BJD community. Especially when you have people buying two-five dolls (that cost $200-$2000 each) a year. So, in a way I can see why people would buy recast - it's a way to try the dolls out, without breaking the bank. They also work for people looking to make ooaks. Recasts are very mixed and with good reason. Personally, I don't think I'd knowingly buy one, but I can see and understand why others would

    Resinsoul has several resin colors, from natural (different shades of human skin tones) to fantasy (blue, green, lavender, etc). They will custom dye as well, like if you want blue but not one of the two shades of blue they offer. They can customize a lot actually, like if you want x doll’s head, y doll’s body, and z doll’s hands, all in a custom bright green resin.
    Resinsoul dolls have s-hooks so people shouldn’t assume that s-hook means recast. If you order a legit Resinsoul it will have an s-hook in the head.

    Her faceup is standard but looks nice. I love the train that snaps onto the dress. As far as her wonky eye, you'll be able to fix that. And you could go through the process of restringing her too to fix her swingy legs. I've done that a ton of times, only scary the first time you do it. Now you just need them to send you a double jointed one so you can move her in a lot more ways. It's nice they sold it as a full set. Just to buy wigs, shoes and clothing separately can cost a lot. And nice that they gave you the option of a small bust or a large one, though I have a hard time finding clothing for my Bobobie that has the small bust. I would call her a beginner doll. But I also think she should be cheaper.

    Might have been said already, but the number of joints is not indicative of the cost or quality of the doll. People should always look and read carefully to know how many and what kind of joints a doll has, but... an expensive doll, with fewer joints, might be more expensive because of who designed it, or its costuming/extras, or the material it is made of. A doll can have a lot of joints and still be poor quality material and construction. All that said, usually more joints are more expensive, and possibly more quality, but it isn't the only factor.

  • @wormwoodz
    @wormwoodz 3 года назад +3

    Thank you very much for being so honest and kind, as well as taking into consideration the concerns of doll collectors instead of just dismissing the issue. It really is refreshing to have someone willing to listen to the people in the hobby instead of just doing blind promotion.
    Regarding the strings, it is normal for the tension to be very strong when the doll is new. These issues (kicking, etc) usually go away within one year as the elastic strings relax, but if you wish you can replace the strings. You will eventually need to restring the doll in a few years as the elastics wear out, so I'd recomend looking up "restringing tutorials" for bjd dolls online. While I've never held a recast doll in my hands, the strong smell is not unusual in brand new resin dolls. The only reason I mention this is because I feel there is a common misconception that "recasts smell terrible", while I've had several brand new dolls come in directly from the legitimate companies that had quite a stench of their own :P
    I can understand your feelings regarding the doll as well as most people, they are indeed quite beautiful and I'd say the makeup artist on this particular one did a good job. The problem is the sculpt is a 100% copy of a doll created by the artists at Fairyland, not even a 'knockoff' or 'imitation' but a literal copy. Around 2008 when recast dolls started poping up the collectors boycotted them and heavily protested against it (writing a lot of angry emails, contacting the original artists, etc). One particular Chinese recast company eventually turned their practice around, hired artists and began manufacturing original dolls. These days they are one of the most respectable Chinese bjd manufacturers, as well as their sister company. I hesitate to name the companies in question, mostly because I don't know if there is anyone working there that had any affiliation with its past, but most people in the hobby know. Think of all the wasted potential and talent if they had stayed course! Of course the price of their dolls now also reflects this, sometimes they are even more expensive than other asian bjds. And ironically because of this their dolls are now being recasted.... some people would say this is 'karma', but I find it very unfair. Everyone deserves a chance to change and the opportunity to do things right.
    Another thing that is worrisome is companies like this one printing fake certificates and claiming these as original works. My country has very strict copyright protection laws and importing counterfeit items is in fact illegal here. You won't go to jail for trying to import one into the country, but they are seized and destroyed by customs authorities (plus the person has to pay fees). Even so, I have on occasion found a few recast dolls being listed for sale on the local second hand market, which means at least some are slipping through the cracks possibly due to these companies lying to my country's authorities. What is worse is these sellers on the second hand market (and sites like ebay) do not disclose to the buyer that the doll is a counterfeit, because if they did they would be admitting to engaging in an ilegal transaction knowingly and could be reported. So as you can imagine this is also unfair to the unsuspecting victims who may end up buying these on false pretenses.
    Thank you again for taking the time to look into these dolls and share this information with your audience. And also thanks so much for mentioning the smaller artists that do custom work for these dolls, there is a lot of talent out there with less visibility that make excellent work!

      The body isn't a Minifee body, so maybe it really is their company own? (Hard to say anything for sure, when the body isn't actually shown... there is no way to review a BJD without "doll nudity" which is a nonissue in my mind, they are slabs of stinky and toxic resin, after all :D Btw, they all smell like an industrial accident, especially the artist ones, and should never be handled without gloves for long periods of time) That ribbon should make adjusting the string easier, although it's not too tight in my mind for starters. I'd wait for a week or so if it loosens on it's own as the elastic starts to relax a bit (the recasts use cheaper elastic, but then again, so do many "legit" ones...). And the eyes are always adjustable, so just poke them whichever way you want them to point.

    I think the diversity thing is just a byproduct of the general lack of skin color diversity in the east asian population-- It is not as much of a cultural melting pot, so there are some people who have genuinely never seen a black person there. That is why there is so much ignorance as to what constitutes a "normal" skin tone. Buying makeup there if you have darker skin must be impossible too. :( In the end, I am assuming it is supply and demand... The US market for these dolls is quite small. • @wormwoodz
      @wormwoodz 3 года назад +2

      I agree that the "normal" term used to this day is really weird, it might have been a "lost in translation" kind of thing when these sites began to have english pages that eventually stuck to this day... I'm not sure what the logic was, but back then most resin dolls only came in two colors: white and pink (the so called "normal").
      However I don't think the lack of diversity was entirely a cultural issue, demand for darkner skintones existed even back in the early decade of the 00s but there were issues with the resin mixing that added certain limitations to the process. When the first 'tanned' resin dolls appeared in the market there were known issues that caused a lot of complaints from customers: such as uneven coloring, very visible seamlines and chipping issues. Some dolls had to be airbrushed for the color to look smooth and even. These days several companies have a wider selection of skintones with generally positive reviews, probably the result of a long process of testing and improving their formulas. The thing is when you add pigment to resin it is inevitable for its structure and properties to drastically change, so for many companies the 'safer' investment cost wise would be to stick to something close to the original color of the prime material. I also notice that vinyl dolls tend to have a wider variety of skintones than resin, perhaps because it is easier to mix diferent colors with consistent results.

    I have 7 bids (msd and yosd), they are all really nice quality and I never spent more that $350 on any of them. Most of them were under $200. You can spend $1000 if you want to and you really love the doll but you can get a really nice one for a much more reasonable price. That being said, don't just buy a doll that is cheap because it's cheap.

    I’ve been collecting BJD’s for 20 years and hooks in the head are how it’s normally been done. It has nothing to do with recasts. I don’t approve of purchasing recasts, but I’ve seen some that are a better quality than the original dolls. As for the doll being “kicky”, that’s not unusual. Most of my DIM dolls have came that way as well as others. I have purchased the clothing from AliExpress for my Blythe dolls and the quality is amazing. I can’t make them for the price and quality they provide. The wigs are also amazing. They don’t offer many outfits for MSD’s, but the do have some for SD’s. If you want you new doll to sit and stand correctly, just restring her. It’s not hard.

    I think the problem is that they copy them exactly the same, but you have to understand that many people (as is my case) do not have the possibility of paying almost 1000 dollars for a doll, more than everything in my country that the economy does not provide for that So is it really so bad to be able to find something that is more accessible? I reiterate, what I really see more is that they copy identical, wardrobe and falsify the authenticity, but let's say it is a market for people who cannot buy ones created by the direct author, it gives people the possibility of being able to have that close What do you like

      @orchiddolls3476 Год назад

      @@s.petrikov Except you're purchasing a Mercedes Benz secondhand, not a co*nterfeit. There's also nothing wrong with purchasing a doll secondhand. I'd also like to note that I feel the word "recast" is misleading, as it makes it sound as if the doll is just a reproduction of an original, when in reality they are co*nterfeit goods of an artist's work (think of it like a forg*ry of a painting). These aren't the same buying a knockoff Barbie, you are supporting thieves who have created one-to-one copies of an artist's original work. So when you purchase a co*nterfeit BJD, you're supporting an unethical and, in many countries, often illegal business.
      That said, there are plenty of affordable options for beginners in the hobby for under $300. Of course there's Resinsoul and Doll Leaves, but also Mystic Kids, Asleep Eidolon, Xaga Doll, True Love, Myou, and even Lut's smaller lines. You can also browse distributors such as Jane's Dolland, BJDivas, and Denver Doll Emporium, who offer layaways to help make the hobby more affordable.

      Navigating what's real and fake becomes easier if you just get involved in bjd groups before buying (like on Facebook, or follow a few bjd tags on insta) People will be extremely kind if you tell them you're trying to avoid buying a recast at all costs, even recast friendly owners in groups that allow that discussion will be respectful of you for only wanting legit dolls, I have since left groups like that, but it was a good place to learn a lot of stuff. If someone uses too much jargon, just ask them to explain it to you like you're 5, because there is honestly a lot to take in. If you're still interested in the dolls and have any questions, I can probably answer them. So shoot me a reply. And that goes for anyone. One thing is... of course the recast is going to be pretty, because the original is made pretty. Because the original artist poured much thought, work and soul into it. And then the recasters just copied the form of it. Other thing I’d like to talk about is that recasts are not even that cheap! When people who buy them pull the money card, ie “I don’t have the money for original” it’s so not true.. there’s an awesome site called Alice’s Collections, selling dolls, wigs, eyes, clothes etc. all the dolls there are legit, and some of them are even cheaper than AliExpress recasts! So you can get a doll and choose all the accessories at one place at a great price, not supporting thieves/recasters

    • @cyano741
      @cyano741 3 года назад +11

      most dolls are not under a 150$ period. In fact, the majority of the bigger brands don't sell dolls at that price range. And those more expensive dolls tend to be the ones that people want, even when they can't afford them. People don't want to settle just for any doll, they want one they really like. Which most of the time, is going to be an unaffordable one. I remember I had to fork 600 euros ( 800$ minimum) for my first doll 14 years ago. Now that recasts exist, a lot of people just don't see the added value of saving a year to get one doll, when they can get 1 for 1/4 of the price. I never bought one, but I can surely understand why.

    Personally, as someone who has both legitimate and recasts, it depends on the use of the doll (for me at least). Like if you are a collector it’s totally understandable to get the real ones made by that artist. For me, the whole reason I got into BJDS (other than the dolls are gorgeous) is mostly creating characters and doing my own face ups. I like to buy a recasts bare cause I don’t want to spend extra to possibly ruin a nice sculpt. I also buy reacts with makeup if it looks similar to what I want so alterations will be easier.

    Ah, yes, kicky dolls. If you haven't restrung her yet, recasters tend to use cheap elastic (frequently the wrong size) and pull too tight, so the dolls are impossible to pose.
    I appreciate your take on this doll. It's a recast Fairyland Minifee with the Chloe face sculpt (the most popular one), but they made a few changes to make the doll appear to be less "bootleg" - cheaper joints, and you're right in the sense that Fairyland dolls do not use S-hooks for the neck. They have a special key you turn.
    Fairyland feet also have magnets instead of S-hooks.
    I do tend to use Aliexpress for wigs, shoes, and clothing. I mean, a wig is a wig is a wig, you know?
    I see even in these comments arguments about recasters, and how BJD collectors can be "bullies." Funny how no one mentions that some people feel like they have a constitutional right to own a recast doll guilt-free, tho.
    My last hot take - BJD collectors are at least partially to blame for counterfeit dolls. I've seen over and over the attitude that collectors have some constitutional right to buy BJDs as cheaply as possible - and when I point out that they aren't paying enough if these smaller companies can't afford to legally defend their IP - WOO. Big mad.
    There's lots of entitlement to go around, is all I'm saying.
    My first BJD purchase was also an accidental counterfeit purchase, and it's the lying and subterfuge that pisses me off. It was not a cheap doll, and for about $100 more, I could have purchased a quality legit doll. So thank you for making that point.

    Soooooo.... Just my 3¢ for people to consider overall. As in looking at a bigger picture overall rather then just a recast issue.
    1. In general anything conning from sites like Wish, AliExpress, Home. The company's could be useing child labor, unsafe work conditions, working people alot of hours for very little wage, useing materials that are harmful or toxic but less regulated outside the USA. Also sourcing materials they use that are harmful to the environment.
    2. Setting everything aside. If anyone reading this , say you created something that you were very happy with and you put In alot of time and effort. So you decide to keep making this item and sell it to others.. your doing ok or fine, but let's be honest you probably are not making back and equal amount as compared to the amount of time and energy that goes into all of it. And one day you find out that someone started to make your item themselves and you see they are making tons of money off your item .. money that you are not making and money you won't make because they already made those sales. Yet you get no compansation or recognition for you being the original creator ..I think anyone would be angry or upset if this happened to you.
    3. These places are selling this stuff all over the place ..as in they are on Amazon and eBay etc etc. So just because someone is getting things from Amazon or eBay neither would guarantee that an item would be original and not a knock off. There are many places doing distribution in the us and other places, but the items are still coming from overseas and the same places that are also selling on Wish Alibaba. So just because the location is the USA does not mean a guarantee of original as opposed to a Knockoff
    4. Going back to the first point or company's useing child labor, poor and unsafe working conditions and anything else that is bad...It all is very related and connected as in you may buy BJDS from the artist themselves, but if anyone buys all the other stuff eyes wigs clothes shoes accessories from anyplace from these places, then that in itself is just as bad because every nickl and dime they make just keeps it all I'm demand and allows them to keep on doing it.so if people are feeding the monster all their sales while others do so every now and then neither is any better then the other because they all keep it going on.
    If anything you might buy at a really cheep price it might seem great and awesome to you , but try to look into what it might be costing other people and the earth so that you can get those cheep prices..
    I would always say if you can buy things from the artist themselves. And rather then wanting instant gratification you will get from buying a cheeper one. And if you have to save your money longer to get something from the artist then so be it.. then just save the money longer. And if someone should still struggle while justifying the cost of something , then if it's still too much , then I would say find something else you like doing it collecting and start a hobby that fits more within you money range

    Tbh the bjd community is definitely the most toxic. I really do enjoy bjds and I can understand why recasts are a big no no ( obviously because it’s stealing someone’s art) but you shouldn’t overreact when other people buy the recast. Some people might actually like the recast, I mean I have one and it’s pretty decent. I got mine from the exact site so I did have the same problems of having the elastic being too tight on the Inside and the smells but overall I think they’re obviously not the quality you want. Which is why the bjd hobby is very expensive and why some people would rather get the recast instead of the authentic doll for over 1,000$ . Unless ur okay with spending that much then great.
    Recasts are something that are a bit meh in my book. I don’t really give a crap who buys recasts or not because y’know what they get what they pay for. Just understand everyone has they’re own opinion on different things. Don’t yell at somebody just because they have that certain thing u don’t like. Like any posts u see online, if u don’t like what u see, scroll up and move on

      Honestly "live and let live" doesn't work in the world of counterfeiting. Like what do you think would happen if all the original companies went out of business because everyone started buying recasts? Bjd can exist without recasts but recasts cannot exist without bjd. The idea that counterfeiting isnt bad isn't just an "opinion" any more than "the sky is fuschia" can be just an opinion. Both a demonstrably false.

    There is a brand of bjd called Smart Doll or Smart Dolls. They released a dark skin tone that I believe was made with African American customers in mind. Ever since the release of that doll, it has been their top seller.

    The reason that BJD company's don't do darker skin is because the claim ots harder and costs more. I find It hard to believe that a colour would make it more difficult

    The magic eraser is for wiping the make up on the face. The eye liner, lips, eye shadow, eye brows, and blush.

      No! It’s not. DO NOT DO THAT! It’s meant for cleaning or any stains she might obtain. Using a magic eraser on the face up with damage it.

      NekoboyGames so normal means white skin! If you don’t get why “normal skin” is an insult then there is no hope for you! Hell even shampoo companies stopped using the term normal. PS, there is a lot of racism against black people in Asia!!!

    A lot of real bjds have hooks?! So thats not even true hahaah. XD and the body is almost if not identical to a minifee and their dolls have those same joints so.. and you pay 600 dollars for one. So yeah if you don't like it... dont buy a real fairyland minifee

    The problem with this is giving screen time to a company that is literally a bunch of thieves. There are so many real BJDs under $200.
    The reason I feel sad about this is because of BJD artists like Villitunes. One very young girl supporting her family who works every single day. She hand sculpted her dolls, built her entire business by herself and recently one of her most popular dolls has appeared as a recast.
    This is an absolute disaster for a small business. It can collapse their entire thing and it's incredibly demoralizing.
    At the end of the day - theft is theft. By giving this recast company your platform, you are normalizing theft of someone else's very hard work. Not some big company like Mattel - one young girl in her studio trying to pay bills.

      @@PrincessofKeys Absolutely!
      My favorite sites are Alice's Collections, Denver Doll Emporium and NewClover Singing.
      Some of the BJD brands that are super afforable are:
      Doll Leaves (IMO the best one, the posing is amazing) - there MSD size (which is 1/4 scale, like 42 cm tall) are $150 ranged.
      Island Doll is nice
      Resinsoul/Bobobie is probably the most afforable - you can check Denver Doll's site for in stock ones - so you don't even need to wait for your order to be made! Their MSD size is in the 150 range, their SDs which are the big 72cm dolls are in the 200-300 range and their smaller ones (called YOSDs) are in the low 100s.
      These are just a few examples - they are out there, and easy to find. There is no excuse for buying recast - you can own legit very very easily. AND Pretty much all artist and company bjds have layaway options - so if you can't front $200 all at once, they'll let you space it out. It's a very doable thing.
