      Thirded. I’d written off the series without looking into it because that is just where I’m at with multiplayer games, between gamer toxicity and my job as a family member’s caregiver meaning that I’d need to in and out hop out of matches pretty regularly. But this sounds wonderful.

      Yeah I havent played multiplayer games in ages, but I picked up battlefield 4 again recently and it genuinely makes me feel terrible everytime I play it. No wonder I was so moody as a teenager, I was constantly playing competitive games that I took way to seriously.

    • @zoroarkking18
      @zoroarkking18 3 года назад +10

      Agreed. I always just thought of it as a more chaotic, less polished-looking For Honor. But knowing that it's different from other "competitive" games in that it literally is all about the more fun aspects of the game and not about winning, I gotta say I'm about to start looking into what platform I should get it on.

    • @rachelladue1572
      @rachelladue1572 3 года назад +13

      @@jaynenunya6070 That's so sweet of you to ask. Ok, so I was probably around 14, I was at day camp so in a group of other 14 year olds, we were all varying amounts of friendship but we were all basically chill with each other. And so it was one of our field trip days and I think we went to two different locations, can't remember the first one but the second place we went to a park, big open green space with a playground and some pavilions and an open field. and at some point we played quackadilly oh my which we were really amping up bc it's a game for 5 year olds but we had been playing all summer dead seriously. So that was great. But the dog park moment was when we went over to a field, and I don't remember if there were really instructions, but we dumped a bag of volleyballs, soccer balls, kickballs, frisbees, and footballs in the center of the field, and it quickly devolved to the most frenzied game of, not exactly keep it up, but like never stop moving. So there was maybe like 10 of us right, and you would kick a soccer ball to someone, and then you'd see a frisbee so you'd run over and throw it to someone, and someone was throwing a football to you so you'd catch it and then punt it towards the group and then you'd notice a kickball off to the side so you'd run over and kick it back and forth with someone until you had to chase after a different ball, and so on and so on all across this field, and it was pure movement, every second was focused on kicking or throwing the next thing, little communication except to get someone to throw you the ball or to alert them about one, none of us paused at all for probably an hour straight, just experiencing the pure mindless joy of being active and all cooperating with the same energy dedicated to a ridiculous purpose, working all the muscles in your body, not needing to win or lose, all on a nice day outdoors. It was a truly amazing experience

    i love the way that pat (and polygon in general) dives deep into game reviews not just from a “how” perspective (how did the game execute its story? how are the game mechanics? how difficult is it to play?) but from a “why” perspective (why does this story make me feel like this? why is this game more fun than others of its kind? why do we, as gamers, like this sort of thing?). the “why” questions are my favorite aspect of gaming.

    Your comments on matchmaking and how casual it is reminded me of how tf2 used to be, all those years of spending hours on the exact same map with the same people, dicking around with spycrabs and fish kills and never ever actually completing the objective. Real shame they pivoted more towards a modern, more fixed matchmaking system, it lost a lot of the appeal of the game to me.

      Yeah was about to comment about tf2 too. To be completely fair, the game did have a noteworthy competitive scene (way before matchmaking which no one liked). I do miss games that are designed to be played casually by offering a lot of self-expression and wacky game modes to the players, rather than everything being designed and balanced towards coordinated teamplay or whatever. I'd rather it be an option for people who really enjoy and want to get good at the game to pursue that and explore the game's mechanics to the fullest, instead of conflating the casual and competitive modes in a one-size-fits-all approach.
      Valorant, Overwatch etc don't really have main casual modes - "unranked" is just ranked but with slightly lower stakes. Never feels like you can just open those games and have a relaxing, uncompromising time playing them. They're not designed to be played in a 20-person server, walking around doing emotes and shooting at whatever (and if you try it, you'll soon realize it's not a lot of fun). But TF2 is, and it still has a deep competitive side because of the inherent depth and expressiveness of its mechanics. TLDR I miss tf2

    And what I like is that there is a low barrier for entry, but a high skill cap. So you can take it seriously if you want to. There’s no reason to, but you can if you like the numbers.
    For example, I take my shield kills very seriously. I always aim to have more shield throw kills in a game than I do decapitated head throwing kills. It’s a sign of a true warrior, IMO.

    I discovered nearly every single one of these traits with Mordhau, from the silly deaths, the de-emphasis on having any responsibility to your team, the emote selection, to even having the very same riposte mechanic, the only thing that can really ruin it is the sweaty tryhards who eventually saturate the game both slowly from the long-term effect of the game having existed for a while and more ephemerally if there hasn't been any discount sale or advertising in a while to drive new players in.
    You know these types of players will ultimately be the last ones left, so it's great to enjoy the honeymoon phase while it lasts, at least if you don't just go ahead & get good enough so you can continue having your fun while repelling (or even punishing) the sweats for pulling out all the stops to swipe you while you're skateboarding on a pavise shield.

    I haven't played Chivalry 2 yet which feels a little shameful of me but I remember Chivalry 1 being such an amazing game because it had just about every characteristic listed in this video but the most amazing thing is something that wasnt really listed here and I'll be somewhat disappointed to see it not be in Chivalry 2 (though not at all at anyone's fault). In Chivalry 1 I remember playing when I was new and someone that was running right at me alone while I was running alone at them would stop dead in their tracks and make their camera look straight down so it looked like their character bowed. Eventually I found out that somehow, there was an unspoken agreement amongst most of the players that in a match a sudden duel to the death can occur by one player trusting their enemy by making their view completely obscured hoping the opponent would do the same. When this happened those 2 were locked in, if there were others nearby they either would avoid the dueling foes or sometimes stop to watch, almost lining up for their turn to fight. The most crazy part of this was how dedicated to this 1v1 match everyone was. I remember being in a duel with a rando when his ally tried to attack me. This rando (who was my enemy) proceeded to help me in killing his ally before waiting for my health to regenerate and then us resuming the duel. This phenomenon wasnt unusual either, I've seen spectators on both sides team up to kill someone who tried to interrupt the duel. I dont remember what my original point was but that still blows my mind because through all my time in Chivalry 1 and all the duels there was almost never anyone doing VC, it was just an unspoken agreement.

    chivalry 2 seems to resemble team fortress 2 community servers in its matchmaking and i love it, its so casual

    That wave spawning idea is pretty genius. It feels like every match of Halo or COD has that "meat grinder" phenomenon going on without anyone realizing it.

    The yelling button is the most important mechanic of the game. It puts everything into place.

    Honestly as someone who's logged like hundreds of hours into Super Smash Bros Ultimate and overall was left bruned out by the restrictive matchmaking and tier list meta stuff, this sounds like a good change of pace.
    Thanks Pat!

    A lot of these systems you described and their benefits relate to why I keep coming back to team fortress 2. There's no stakes, no punishment to being silly. The game is meant to be silly. It's hard to be mad when you're laughing, even if your team is being utterly demolished.
