I have fallen in love with my scan n cut machine since watching your blog. I've had it in the cupboard for about 5 years as i was overwhelmed with the technology of it but you have helped me to overcome the fear. I updated it with your advise. Thank you.
Wow! That was 40 minutes long. Wonder why I had trouble with only 30. Anyway, very generous of you! I still can't decide if it would help with my multiple piece butterfly quilt. Each butterfly could have 6 to 10 pieces -- tiny pieces! And they would all be a different fabric. I can certainly see how it would be wonderful for what you are doing. Doesn't the IQ Designer in the embroidery machine scan things and turn them into applique? I'm pretty sure my Artista software will do it with a regular scanner. Thanks for the awesome tutorial!!!
I have just watched the video as I am wanting to do an appliqué with a William Morris design, I am feeling far more confident now. I bought Simply Appliqué so going to have a go this afternoon. Regards Sylvia from UK.
I'm struggling with my old sewing machines dying, will never be able to afford either of these machines but was absolutely riveted to this video! You made it amazing! Thank you, Dawn
Thanks for watching! You can always do applique by machine the old fashioned way. You might check pawn shops, yard sales, and Craig's list for a new-to-you machine if you're in the market for one. I check both all the time to see if there's one I'd like to have. That's how I got my Quattro for $$$$ less than originally priced. One man's trash... :)
I posted once before about how to position the appliques after they were created. I don't have a camera machine and the little snowmen weren't working for me. I found a video "Easy and Accurate Placement of Machine Embroidery Applique Shapes for Large Designs" by Marjorie Busby. Hope it's okay that I posted this. I have seen several other people posting about the same problem. It takes a little time but it solved my problem. Again. Thank you for your great tutorials. Wouldn't have been able to do it without you. Love your laugh!
I hadn't seen that technique before. That's very helpful for folks who don't have fancy embroidery machines with the cameras in them. Thanks for posting!
You have a placement line, just make sure your center is marked on your fabric, your needle automatically goes to center. Stitch out your placement, then add your Rhino, then tackdown, then final satin, blanket, etc.
Oh my. Awesome video. This has taught me a lot. Still have lots more to learn about appliqué and embroidery. Thanks so much for these videos. They are very much appreciated and enjoyed. Prayers your hubby is doing well.
Love your videos! I need to get my act together and start playing with the combination of simply appliqué and the scan and cut. Thinking about all the cute coloring books out there but I am not sure you could separate layers ? Maybe simple designs. Keep those videos coming. I so love to hear you laugh and see what you are up to.
Coloring books are a great way to make fabulous applique patterns with the SNC and Simply Applique. It's fairly easy to take a piece of copy paper and just trace the individual pieces you want on different places on the paper and then scan that in to the SNC. Then either on the SNC screen or in the Brother Canvas you can move them around to make room for the fabric pieces to be cut. Then take the additional step to save the .fcm file to a USB and import into SA for the embroidery applique file. It's so simple and fun. Enjoy!
I just love your videos. I’m looking for any project that I can use my embroidery machine on. I have a Viking Epic and I love to sew, quilt and Applique. My favorite project so far has been a Kimberbell Bench Pillow - Halloween. It is so cute when done. So I had to buy a bench to put it on. I just bought the DX230 Scan N Cut too. Wishing I was your neighbor, I think we’d get a long great.
Thank you Becky you answered a lot of questions I had. I have the Brother SNC 650WX like you have. My embroidery machine is a Huskvarna/Viking so I was wondering if I could use the Simply Appliqué & I was pleased to see I can. I will be downloading it tomorrow. Thanks you, you are always so informative!!
Becky, GREAT tutorial! I'm working on my applique skills so very timely for me! I stopped buying the fabric support sheets for my scan n cut. Instead, I use clear contact paper (sticking the non sticky side of the contact paper to the mat). It is about the same sticky, and you can cut it for which ever size mat you're using. I don't feel so bad about deciding to replace when they get worn out since you can buy a whole roll of the contact paper for a couple of bucks!
Wow! That's a great idea!! I'm going to try that. I just bought a new mat and fabric support sheets but will give your trick a try on my old one first to see if I can extend its life. Thanks!
Hi! Becky thanks so much for your videos... I am not new to embroidery I own 2 Husqvarna Designer Diamond machine, but I am new to appliqueing and had wanted to learn how. I don't like the fact of cutting and sewing those little pieces ,so I never got into appliqueing. So, you made it look so easy with these tools. I just bought the Simply Appique from All Brand also I just got the Brother Scan N Cut SDX 230D. This past November I bought the Embrilliance software and the Dream Machine2. Tina, email me at beckyleethompson at outlook dot com and I'll be happy to share the pattern. You can use any fabric you like and applique the old fashioned way.
So cool! I am going to check out that software! I am wondering if I could just embroider on a square of fabric, and then cut carefully around the tack down stitches, eliminating the whole cutting out thing. Do you find that the inch of cutaway around the design, shows thru the white fabric of the quilt?
Great video! Ah, the marvels of modern-day life...Praising God for that!!! Every serious quilter/crafter should have an electronic scan-and-cut....Hint to the hubbies...Mother's Day is coming...Btw, these two companies should send you a gift basket for demo'ing their products...jmho...Again, great job. I watched it and slowly realised that the simply Applique is a program for an embroidery machine! I don’t have one of those but I applique on my trusted old Pfaff with a buttonhole stitch and that Rhino would only take five minutes
Fun This was my original plan a few years ago... I got my scan n cut2 But the custody Leagal battle ate up 20k.... so I will have to free style my appliqué pieces. Good thing I learned how by the time I was in jr high... my mom taught both appliqué and f embroidery long before computerized home machines I have the skills and no desire because I too love machines that take that stress part of work out of it all.
GREAT! video, Becky. I have a scan n cut, the low-buck model. I have gone thru so many mats because they lose their stickiness. How do you refresh them? Love the applique software demo. That may be my next purchase.
I bought some alcohol-free wipes at Walmart and every so often, I try to get the extra threads off the mat as much as possible. That seems to help. My mats are lasting probably less than normal too because fabric leaves fuzz all over them which dulls the sticky very quickly. I haven't tried layering a new fabric support sheet on top of an old one yet but that is next on my list to try.
It was so great watching you go thru all these steps! I just need to buy that software and I will be ready to Rock and Roll!!! Thank you so very much for making it look so straightforward.
I understand there's a free version but I'm not sure of its limitations. I didn't know there was a free version when I bought mine. You might see if you can find that and give it a try before buying the full version if you like.
@@PowerToolsWithThread well no local dealers had the software, so I called Allbrands and they had only 1 left! So you know what I did! Yup, will be getting it in 3 days. Never had time to download free version but now that I know it's been discontinued probably because of new scan n cut and newer embroidery machines, I'm thankful I found 1 as a have the same setup as you. Have a blessed day! Love your videos !
Great video! It is funny because my husband calls me "The Gadget Girl" because I always had the latest digital things and was good at understanding how to use them. That has slipped somewhat with age, sorry to say.
Thanks for this tutorial. I have the DX model, they did an update because of mat issues. I bought a new 24" mat and didn't get a chance to use it until after the update. It wouldn't let me scan it to see where the material was. My local quilt store told me to call Brother because it was due to the update and they should send me a new one. Brother told me you can only cut with that mat. Guess I will be calling them again!
I had heard that the DX doesn't use the 24" mat. Is that the problem? I cant imagine they'd make a machine that doesn't use it but that's what a commenter told me. Hope you can get this worked out.
@@PowerToolsWithThread they make one specifically for the dx machines. The problem was people were having loading any mat into them after a while. I never had that problem, I could load it and cut on it, but I couldn't scan it to see where my material laid on the screen so I could place my fabric in the right spot, just like you did. That makes no sense.
Hi mom!! Yes, it's turning out super cute. I figure that I might as well get this done while the youngest grandboy is still little or I won't have anyone else to make it for. lol Thanks for watching...even though you don't sew. Aren't you sweet? :) Oh, have you checked out the RUclips channel for A Chick That Knitz? That's Joy's daughter. She's a doll.
Yes, I save most of them. If they are large enough to be used, I'll cut away the skinny pieces and keep the larger bonded scraps in a tray in the cabinet under the SNC.
I got it from Allbrands. Give them a call and they will ship it right to you! Great company! www.allbrands.com/products/65662-brother-sabessa-simply-applique-creative-embroider
Thank you Becky. I might be bugging you once in awhile for help😁. I sure wish we lived close. I have no one here that I know. The quilt shop I was going to 11 miles away from me in her home that did embroidery and quilting in her home had a fire and she never rebuilt .
When you had your rhino on your computer screen, is there a reason you didn't move the rhino in top left and add another rhino to right and below if you had room to save material I enjoy you videos You show you are just like everyone else sometimes you have opps! I do more embroidery then sewing and enjoy sewing for children Is Simply Applique a separate computer program?
I made the rhino quilt just like the pattern in the magazine. I rarely "color outside the lines". LOL Yes, Simply Applique is a separate computer program. But some of the higher-end embroidery software can do it also.
I'm not sure if the wand will save to svg. I think it saves to .jpg or at most .pdf. But Cricut has a way using their phone app to print a calibration page to calibrate your phone, then take the pic of the shape and import into the Cricut cloud. The cloud (or the app - I'm not sure) will create the .svg to send to your Cricut to cut it out. Save the .svg from the Cricut cloud into your laptop, then upload that into the Brother Canvas cloud and then download the .fcm file created by Canvas to your laptop to import into Simply Applique. It's clunky, but it will work. That is the rig-a-ma-role I had to go through with Silhouette. Life's too short. Adios Silhouette and Hello Scan N Cut!
I just purchased my scan n cut dx. I have several Anita Goodesigns that are appliqué s and I would like to use my scan n cut to make the designs. There are no templates with the program. How can I make a template? I sure like your videos. I lean a lot.
I don't think you need a template. On the CD, for the appliques there might be files with a file type of .svg. (Kimberbell does this on their CDs). If there are SVG files, you can load those onto a USB stick and then put the USB in the Scan N Cut (SNC) and cut out the fabric portions. If there aren't any SVG files on the CD, you'll have to do it the old fashioned way of cutting the excess fabric off after the tack down stitch. That is, unless you have some fancy embroidery software that can create an SVG file for you from the embroidery design. OH! If there is a .pdf file of the applique designs on the CD with images of the design, you need to print out that page and then you can scan that in to the SNC and create the cut files from there.
When you use the 12x24 where does the mat go in the back? It looks like your machine is close to the wall. I love your videos. Thanks and keep up your great work.
That is the cutest rhino Becky. Do you have to have an embroidery machine to use this or can you just do regular appliqué on your sewing machine? I do not have an embroidery machine. Thanks.
Kay, Simply Applique creates an embroidery file but no, you do not have to have an embroidery machine to do applique. You would simply trace the image onto the back of a piece of Heat-n-Bond, iron the HNB onto a piece of fabric, cut it out along the drawn line, and then stitch it down by machine. That's the old school way of doing applique and can be done without an embroidery machine. But if you want to use Simply Applique, you'd need an embroidery machine.
Hi Angela! The user guide definitely helps and you're right that the program isn't very forthcoming about where it's at. There are actually two places where you can find info. On the CD itself, there's a PDF called Simply Applique Instruction Manual. Then, another spot, is on the program itself, there's a tiny little blue icon in the very uppermost right corner of the screen that has a ? on it. Hope that helps! Enjoy!
I normally use the default settings that the software gives me, which is a 2.0 width. I do like to bring the tack down stitch in just a bit like I did on this video to make sure I catch the edges of the fabric...especially the tiny parts. If you'd like to make the final satin stitch wider or more narrow, I'd put that scrap basket of yours to work and make several tests until you're happy with the result. Don't forget, if you don't use the SNC to pre-cut your applique pieces, you can always lay a larger piece of fabric down over the placement line, then tack it down, cut away the excess with your scissors, and then do the final satin stitch which will fully cover the first two lines of stitching. Enjoy!
Using Cricut is hard because it's difficult to scan in an image. However if you were to create an account on the Brother Canvas you could upload any SVG files to the Canvas and then download them to your laptop to be used in Simply Applique.
The Canvas is free to have an account and play around in it. It has a lot of free projects in it too that you can download to a SNC cutting machine for no charge. I don't think it creates a file type that can be read by the Cricut or Silhouette, but I'm not sure. Simply Applique does not come free with the machine, but I've had commenters say there is a free version that can be downloaded. I would expect that the abilities of the free version are very limited.
I have fallen in love with my scan n cut machine since watching your blog. I've had it in the cupboard for about 5 years as i was overwhelmed with the technology of it but you have helped me to overcome the fear. I updated it with your advise. Thank you.

I made the rhino quilt just like the pattern in the magazine. I rarely "color outside the lines". LOL Yes, Simply Applique is a separate computer program. But some of the higher-end embroidery software can do it also.
I wonder if I could take a shape, like your rhino,, use my wand scanner to scan and save it, import it into my Cricut, and cut it out!
I'm new to this. Is Simply Applique in with the Embrillance software or where is it?😊😊😊😊
Simply Applique is a separate software program.
When you use the 12x24 where does the mat go in the back? It looks like your machine is close to the wall.
I love your videos. Thanks and keep up your great work.
I pull the machine to the front of the table so it has enough room to push the long mat all the way to the back without obstruction. :)
I didn't see that in your video it didn't look like you moved it. I am so excited to have found you. I love you videos. thank you for replying
Loving your channel. I found it by mistake. Have a scan n cut
Glad you stumbled on it! LOL Thanks for watching!
You so cool. I alway want a machine like that. Did want one until i saw you doing it. ]
Love your attitude!!!
Thanks for watching!
Your usb stick is so so cute. I want one !
Here's where I got it. It's the little things like this that make me happy in my sewing room. :) smartneedle.com/product/sewing-machines-usb-drives/
I have a heck of a time trying to get a user manual. My Simply Applique Package did not come with one. Any suggestions????
Enjoy!
Great Job
What is simply applique..? is it an app/software? and do you need it if you have the new scan and cut machine.
Here is a detailed video about Simply Applique. ruclips.net/video/pake35TnrPY/видео.html
I'm doing the lace quilt also mine is two different blues
Oh I love blue quilts! I bet that will be gorgeous!
How do you know what size to make satin stitch or blanket in simply appliqué. I downloaded free trial of simply appliqué but found it confusing
Enjoy!
Hi can I use my Cricuit for applique please advise. thanks
Using Cricut is hard because it's difficult to scan in an image. However if you were to create an account on the Brother Canvas you could upload any SVG files to the Canvas and then download them to your laptop to be used in Simply Applique.
where can i get the simple applique program
You should Google it for the free version. I bought mine from Allbrands.com
Does simply applique work on a Mac
The manufacturer says it does not. However, I've heard that it will work if the Windows module is installed on a Mac. But I do not know that for sure.
How do I do this using Embird please
I'm sorry but I don't know Embird software. If Embird has a feature to import .fcm files, then it should be able to do it.
❤
I nailed the side of my finger with a size 16 longarm needle-it SUCKED!! Be careful, Becky!!!
Is the brother canvas or the simply appliqué paid programs or do they come free with the machine?
The Canvas is free to have an account and play around in it. It has a lot of free projects in it too that you can download to a SNC cutting machine for no charge. I don't think it creates a file type that can be read by the Cricut or Silhouette, but I'm not sure. Simply Applique does not come free with the machine, but I've had commenters say there is a free version that can be downloaded. I would expect that the abilities of the free version are very limited.
