    Nice one. I'm about to do the same job on my Unimog, but the opposite. From a 71C to a 83C. My Unimog spent most of its life in California but now its in Canada. I have been implying the cardboard over the rad method to get her upto temp, ha. Love your videos, thanks. I have a OM353.961.

      Oh, and did you notice a difference? The operating temperature is 80-90C I believe.

    Hi Thabo.
    You have done the right thing passing on the construction of the Unimog canopy to specialists. Just by watching you, went through all the videos and gave you thumbs up - it was enjoyable - but with all due respect, you have done many mistakes. However, "thermostat" upgrade is definitely a no-no.
    For one thing, the thermostat role is maintaining the engine temperature as constant as possible as all parts subject to thermal expansion, i.e pistons, rings, valves, cylinder liners, bearings, etc. are designed to run with optimal clearance at that very temperature the thermostat is maintaining.
    Secondly, I very doubt that in any alarm management system an alarm (in your case 82 degrees) will be set just 1 degree above the engine operating temperature (in your case 81 degrees); does not make sense especially with an army truck! Where did you get that information from as is definitely incorrect?
    Now, engine running at lower temperature (in your case with the new thermostat at 71 degrees) means the parts will never reach the optimum temperature, hence the clearances will be higher and that means more hot gases blow-by past the pistons in the crankcase, increased oil consumption and accelerated wear.
    I am really sorry for the lost of your son, I really do. Traveling will help and keep his memory alive.

      The 72 degrees thermostat was recommended and sold to me by the local Unimog specialist. The alarm was installed to curtail the troops from thrashing the mog so was done intentionally to go off if you drive it a bit too hard.

      @@ThaboNelmeanshappiness I don't understand if the operating temp is 80-90C why they would recommend a 72C thermostat, doesn't it just slow down, or stop, reaching OP temp? I would've thought better to re-calibrate the alarm to 88-90C. Hope your journey continues after lock down.

    After you replaced the thermostat did you have to bleed the cooling system using a bleed screw to get the air out?

      Was I suppose to do that?, the workshop manual did not have anything on that, thanks for the info, will do that.
