Yes, heat exhaustion and heat stroke needs to be taken very seriously and although it is important to cool the body, if the cooling is too extreme and/or takes place too rapidly that can cause an entire issue on its own like shock and other things.
I live in a desert area of Southern California and unprepared hikers need to be rescued by helicopters and they don't always survive.
REI offers classes for people to learn and prepare, like "mountain medicine." I would imagine they also have classes in Oregon.

I don't want to admit this, but I haven't done that hike either. There's a road that opens in the middle of summer and makes the hike much shorter, but I haven't figured it out yet.
