Great video as always, Daniel! I shoot in a space that is roughly 8x10, so space is extremely limited. I have an octagon, and I’m glad you demonstrated how versatile it is - gave me some new ideas. Marisa, awesome to see you in the New Year! Looking lovely!
Yippee! Now this is how to start the new year off correctly, with a look at Ms. Marisa and of course you to Mr. Norton. I once had a model for a couple years that was as much fun to work with as Marisa. That is a blessing that you never know about until you have been lucky. It's not always the look however Marisa is stunning and so was my model. It's personality and exuberance and being in the moment. Marisa is so fun to watch in the background as you do your opening. She is entertaining as heck and just makes these little sessions with you guys magical. I hope we get to see Marisa in a movie one day soon. She already looks like a more attractive Scarlett Johansson. We are all pulling for her.
Thank you Daniel. I appreciate all you do and always pick up tips with every video you post. I'm currently working with a 2x3 softbox and trying everything I can think of. Your video's help me tremendously.
Excellent. Simple, quick and to the point with fundamnetal pro results. Thanks Daniel. Now, all I need is a model like Marisa, who doesnt get bored and easy on the budget ha
Hello Daniel and Marisa. It’s Always great to see the photo sessions/tutorial’s and the great ambient with your work. Marisa as always, fun and talented. An Octagon softbox… going to write one in my Wish list, I got a square one and the effect is not the same. Thanks to both or you for your work, making it cool, joyful and relaxing to watch.
Is the light feathering the model or it’s directly hitting her models eyes? Have had subjects complain about the light in the eyes in the past. These photos came out so great!
Thanks for the videos. Learning studio photography now. Last weekend I struggled a bit getting the background pitch black (it was a black backdrop). I couldn't figure out and gave up after and hour of try. Now it makes sense. I added too many lights which could be easily accomplished with just one light. I guess, it's one light for me till I start understanding lights. 2 gets things complicated unless you know how to play with lights. Thanks for these videos.
Dear Daniel, thank You so much for your tutorials! They are priceless! They really are! They have opened my eyes on studio lighting! ;-) I am writing to you because I have trouble shooting with that high aperture. Once the setting are on, I can hardly see through my camera my model (it's too dark) and what goes with it putting the right focus. How should I do it? What focus mode are you suggesting for portraits? Thank You in advance for your answer! Looking forward your new tutorials. All the best!
If you are using a mirror less camera, there should be a setting that allows you to see better, basically turn off what the camera will record of ambient light.
I know this is an old comment but with DSLR, carry a small flashlight/penlight, have your model close their eyes, focus with the light, lock focus, turn off the light, have them open their eyes, fire.
Nice to know one light source is versatile. Thanks Daniel! I love that color sweater on Marisa. The green really complements her hair and eyes. Thanks Marisa!
Nice video. I use a octabox quite a bit, however I think that a 60" umbrella is the most versatile modifier as one can do several things: 1. Bounce light into umbrella 2. Close umbrella down bouncing light to give a more softbox look 3. Shoot thru 4. And do your ring light look you did with the octabox. I've shot anywhere from 1 to a group of 16 with the 60" umbrella which a group that big with a softbox the same size can't be done as easily. :) keep up the great work. I dig your videos.
Great ideas and thanks for the idea of standing in front of the light tocause a kind of ring light effect. In general I don't like ring lights in folks eyes as it looks false to me
Great video. Very informative and compliments to Marisa. I agree with the comments by Vagabond Wolf. The model makes such a huge difference. Someone who is fun and easy going can make a shoot!
Cool Daniel & Melissa, we always LEARN and have FUN with you guys. But I wonder, when you use TTL, what type of metering do you use? Because, in this case you used a black background, but what if it is white? It deppends of the skin of the model too? Thanks again, pura vida.
It's 2019 and the Great Team is back! :) Simple but informative! Are you going to keep the same youtube activity (live broadcasts from the Adorama place+short lessons on a certain topic + occasional live chat with the audience) in 2019?
Another great video... you da man! I agree with the request for some multiple subjects shoots for Adorama. In the past year I bought from Adorama two lenses (a Tamron zoom and a Nikon prime), some light modifiers and several prints. Let them know that their paying customers would really appreciate if they could on ocassion spring for multiple models (Marisa & Erica) for lighting videos. If nothing else they could sell bigger modifiers that way.
Wow, I had no idea you could put the light behind you and still have it reach your subject and look good like that. Guess you don't need to carry around a ringlight.
As always Daniel, your videos are very educational/informative (on your channel and Adorama’s). Would it be possible for you to do a similar shoot with more than one person? (Like a three person portrait from the waist up). I know its easy for me to ask, after all, I’m not the one paying the models. LOL
Great suggestion Enrique. I thought about the same thing, a group photo session would be a great tutorial. Might be a little tight in Adorama's presentation centre but quite feasible at Daniel's studio. Cheers and Happy New Year.
I appreciate the video and have a few follow-up questions, if you have time. How portable are these octaboxes? How large are they when broken down? How quickly do they set up? How well do they travel to remote locations? Thanks again for the video and for any time you have.
Hey Daniel, I'm curious about why you choose to cut the top of her hair in most shots. Is it your style or does it differ by model/type of shot? Great video!
Do you do like apprenticeships? Because I would seriously love to have you as a teacher. I am just getting in to portraits and this look that you get is amazing and I would really love to learn how to get the look and feel that you get in my portraits.
Marissa's arms are stretched a bit holding that reflector. Makes her shoulders very broad. Been using a 120cm Rotalux for a few years, but I'm trying a 100cm deep octa and it a tad more punchy.
I just watched the video you filmed for Adorama's channel, "Is it better to diffuse or reflect light?" and this video. I'm wondering what the difference might be between a "5-in-1" diffuser vs an octabox of similar size? Would your light coming through diffusion material be more harsh because of the reflector attached to the strobe? Thank you for the education!
It would not be harsher, with a diffuser you’ll have more options as far as where to place the light etc., but the soft box gives you may be more consistent results
This isn't so hard... All I'd need to do to recreate this sort of shoot it is to experience and absorb about 20 more years of professional shooting experience, collect and understand the use of a ton of professional cameras, lenses, and lighting equipment, create a comfortable-yet-efficient studio space, find and develop great working relationships with excellent models like Marissa, refine the combination of technical knowledge and stylistic sensibilities over many years, learn how to record this on multiple cameras with audio, edit it, to present it to others both live and online, and repeat the process over and over, until I could consistently create particular styles at will. ...Simple!
Ha! Exactly. I'm gonna get myself a weird hat, some huge-frame glasses, and some other props too, to add even more style, and complete the impression that I have an art education. Marketing!
to realy save money you can use second-hand manual speedlights with manual adjustable power output and a simple radio trigger system or cheap TTL speedlights + TTL radio transceivers from Yongnuo for instance - I`m using TTL speedlight gear from Yongnuo for many years and it works realy fine just as well as the much more expensive original speedlights
The result would be the same. Don't think too much on what kind of gear is used, the shape and technique is the important part. Brand of gear does not matter.
@@DanielNortonPhotographer Very Nice. I've got the 26" Rapidbox and I'm thinking the 1 metre Lastolite will be the most affordable upgrade for a poor man? :-D
How did you join all that foamcore together? I only see pieces 24x32" or so at the biggest size. Also, these days have you replaced that as your go-to with those foldable black/white V-flats?
Great video but I'm confused about why you would use TTL. Starting at 05:03 the exposure on her face seems to vary from frame to frame. I know that Profoto has the option (as does Godox/Flashpoint) to convert the TTL to Manual, which is what I usually do on the rare occasions I start with TTL.
That cheerful model could not possible be more beautiful.

Beautiful Happy Model and Fantastic Photographer Win Win
Well done mate these vids are great for beginner's trying to get their heads around how different lighting positions work
Thanks!
I love the dynamic between you two. It really makes your videos fun! You two are like Fred and Ginger, Ozzie and Harriet...Turner and Hooch...
Ha ha, thanks
Another good one Daniel! Keeping it simple!
Awesome Thank You. For My Small home studio this is something I believe will work for me! You’re the best Sir!
Is Marisa ever grumpy? She’s always so engaging and seems to love her job. So many models look miserable in their role.
You’re such a great team. 👍🏻
Never!
Daniel thanks for the great video, very informative. Love Marisa she is such a natural beauty and seems so enjoyable to work with.
Thanks!!!
Hey, this is cool. I got a " suggestion " from RUclips and saw Marisa and then noticed the channel name and instantly subscribed.
Thanks Daniel. I shoot a lot like this and it's great to see others talk about it!
You’re great at explaining things.
Marisa have the best personality! So lovely and lively

Thank you for another educational video. Quick question, would the same setups work (more or less) w/ a 7’ umbrella?
Nope. The umbrella would be softer and spread the light much more

Daniel Norton Photographer -perfect reply.
Daniel. Why does her hair appear so fused/soft/matted at f11? I.e. shallow d of field.
With the first light behind you, shooting straight on, does't the photographer's body cast a shadow?
I'd like that Marisa modifier as my subject,, reflecting light back to my camera.
🤣
Do you think 90 D would be a good camera for its in my near future price range or your suggestion
I can’t say any modern camera would be “bad” at this point. But I don’t know much about that camera or what you plan to do with it.
I know you could do it, but I would love to see you do this with Adorama's Flashpoint gear instead of the more pricey Profoto gear. Just my 2cents.
A couple of months back I used the flashpoint stuff in a live Adorama demo.

Sometimes I just like to leave it in TTL especially when I’m. moving around.
