  • Working on some interior updates on the 1988 Cali MAF Coupe. The old worn out LX seats with a gangster lean gotta go and instead of buying a new carpet, I opt to dye the original one. Unfortunately something changed in the RIT fabric dye when they introduced the liquid formula. Don't worry, I have the solution. On the next episode you will see the outcome and results of the dyed carpet and the freshly recovered rear seats to match the leather fronts from my Calypso coupe.

A couple stack of bricks around a turkey fryer propane burner and a metal can, and you can boil that water. We used to do that for crawfish.

I always had good results by pressure washing the carpet letting it completely dry then taking the rit dye putting one full bottle in a spray bottle mixed 50/50 with water and spraying the dye on letting it dry always came out looking like new carpet ...I've even done it to blue carpet with great results

The black carpet will look good with the grey interior. Have it in my 91 with the Titanium interior with the factory sport bucket seats. The two tone of black and gray always looks good. My drivers seat is really the only seat cover that needs replaced but I’m really afraid that if just the drivers seat is done it won’t match other other factory seats. So if I have to do all the seats maybe I’ll switch to the black. Idk.

Power wash dirty carpet first, not after its dyed. Use a plastic kid pool to dye it in to avoid lines and creases. More dye concentration needed.

I could see a cheap fish tank immersion heater and pump for circulation at the bottom of the can under a plastic grate helping the process 🤘

Listened to your podcast with KASL while doing some things around the house this morning.
    THUMBS UP! Great idea.
I never had pedals or monster tachs. I do wish "us Canadians" could have a promo code for LMR because in the states they have free shipping and we have both shipping and exchange to pay.
I will be on the lookout for your next one guys.

I'll be definitely trying this before I buy new carpet if mine isn't to worn-out. Im going for the same color interior as the Cali Coupe.

Just thought that I would let you know that you can also dye seatbelts! Just did my rear coupe belts today. Turned out nice. I used Rit Dye but you have to use their Dyemore version, it is made for polyester. You have to mix several dyes to make a true black. I used Graphite, Midnight Navy and Racing Red. Also heat is a must. I kept the temp at about 200 degrees for about 1 hr and the belts came out nice and black. The belts that I started with were titanium gray.
I am now thinking to try dying the rear seats themselves! Turn a set of porno red seats into black. I currently have the rear seats done in corbeau black cloth but I still prefer the factory LX cloth.

What do you think about a kids pool they make square ones that are pretty close to the dimensions of the carpet. May help on cutting and wrinkles. Possibly help with coverage as well.

Looks like a another dye bath is needed, looks like a darker smoked grey on video, but it is a for sure a option than the aftermarket option, as long as the the donor carpet is in good shape.

I had problems when the water wasn't hot enough or I didn't use enough dye. Almost boiling water and around 15 boxes of the powder soaking overnight indoors with inside temp around 70 did the trick. Also from what I've seen dying various things, one bottle of liquid does about what one box of powder does. I'm partial to the powder.

What kind of glue remover should i use....
And what kind of glue should i use to put the padding back on

I honestly don't glue them back on, just lay them down with the carpet on top. Otherwise you can get some 3M spray adhesive and use that.

That's the one thing I bought new when I did the black conversion in my 87 LX. It just made sense to get new since the carpet was pretty worn. I believe it was ACC brand, but I bought it like 20+ years ago. If the carpet is pretty good though, it makes sense to dye it.
