  • The HbA1c test, also known as the haemoglobin A1c or glycated haemoglobin test, is an important blood test that gives a good indication of how well your diabetes is being controlled. Together with the fasting plasma glucose test, the HbA1c test is one of the main ways in which type 2 diabetes is diagnosed.

    Great video just one tiny correction, HbA1c is Glycated form of HbA1 not Glycosylated, since Glycation is a non-enzymatic reaction while Glycosylation is a post-translational process mediated by enzymes and (obviously) is highly regulated.
    so by definition HbA1c is Glycated form of HbA1 since it's due to non-enzymatic addition of glucose to it's protein structure.

    Is HbA1C an average blood sugar level over a 3 month period or is it the weighted average blood sugar level. I am a diabetic. I check my Fasting and pp sugar fairly regularly. My feeling is that HbA1C gives a higher weightege to most recent blood sugar level. Has any study been done in this regard?

    You are talking about Type 1 Diabetes. In Typr 2 which is most common in India, the problem is that of insulin receptors and GLUT4 cross-membrane transporters. The cells dont receive blood sugar becuase of that and trigger the liver to increase sugar supply.

    Bro I have been searching around but can't find exactly how the hba1c machine works
    If the test is an estimate of the blood sugar levels for 2 to 3 months average, how do the test report come back so fast, as early as 2 days?
    Wouldnt it take more time?

    • @animatedbiologywitharpan
      @animatedbiologywitharpan  Месяц назад +1

      This test does not detect blood sugar bur glycated hemoglobin ( Hba1c) , which is a proxy for sugar status for 2-3 month. It actually takes only few seconds in the autoanalyzer to detect it.

      @animatedbiologywitharpan  2 месяца назад

      HbA1c is a blood test showing what percentage of red blood cells have glucose molecules (or blood sugar) attached to them. Having less than 5.7% of red blood cells coated with glucose is normal. A rate of 6.2 means you are in the prediabetes range

    Sir i also read on healthians report that because of following reasons it can show elevated
    👉 HbAlc may be increased in patients with polycythemia or post-splenectomy.
    👉 Inappropriately higher values of HbAlc may be caused due to iron deficiency, vitamin B12 deficiency, alcohol intake, uremia, hyperbilirubinemia and large doses
    of aspirin.
    Mostly vegetarian people are low in these iron and b12.
    So how can one check accuracy as fasting sugar comes ok but hba1c comes at 6.1 !
