I put a Rod & Custom MII type in my 1970 Maverick. The best upgrade by far. I am fortunate that I have been a welder for 45 years and had no problem with the welding. It was a little scary when I started cutting things out though. I measured a dozen times before making my cuts. Please Kiwi wear a face shield when grinding. You only have two eyes.
Wow that is a very nice looking frontend Kiwi. I like your idea of not welding it solid until you have checked and measured things to make sure it sits just right. Can't wait to see that Coyote go in there mate.
Wow Kiwi’s, love how you had thought ahead of the whole enchilada in that the “indexing” might have to be fine tuned for the old Ford! Yeah, I’d remembered seeing often wheels and components not quite “centered” in wheel wells things like this in mass production for cars back in the day. So, wow great looking ahead of the project.. Guess you’ve done it before for sure, I’d not even think of that far ahead in production or fabrication.. So cool, you’re quite the Custom Shop! Love this Channel as I learn so much. Thanks Kiwi!😊
@@kiwiclassicsandcustoms9160Grab yourself and old couch cushion, pull the cover off and throw it on the ground when you need it. Much quicker than messing with knee pads. Try it, they work really well.
Quality build there Kiwi. In my younger days I did a lot of frame work. Cars to heavy trucks. It always fascinated me that "factory" spec was not that accurate. Lots of plus/minus 1/8 to 3/16s. I usually tried to keep everything within a 1/16. The alignment fellows usually liked working on what I did. I also really liked the quality of the kit your using. That really will make the finished product stand out too. Plus working on the car down the road will be easier too. Some fellows should not be allowed to weld or cut. LOL
9:50 ....hiya kiwi, when I'm doing this job , I plumb line all the way from the garage roof joist before I cut out/unbolt the cross member. Obviously after Squaring and levelling the whole chassis..✌️👍🇬🇧
Plumb line dropped from centre of rear axle hubs and front axle hubs, measure the distances between them on each side, at least the front and rear hubs/axle will be parallel, torque boxes can have too much wiggle room to be reference point. Could be good to buy a tall welding shield to protect other cars in workshop from angle grinder sparks. Great channel. As you said in another video, these hacked rust bucket cars would not be able to get a roadworthy or be registered in Australia or New Zealand.
Great - No compromises build Kiwi! I hear that the suspension is fully adjustable but I wonder what could be accomplished if you degreed the whole crossmember back some. I guess that would be loosely defined as "rake"? Maybe there's some angle built in but it's difficult to tell visually.
That's a good video. I was just wondering before you took off the old system. Couldn't have used a plum ball and mark the internal fender where the middle of the axle was so you can put it back in the same place. Just thinking. 👍👍🙂🇨🇦
That is the way to do it! With this car though I've replaced both front chassis rails and the rh inner fender. So there's not enough reference points for me to be 100% sure I've ended up in the right spot so I'm going to let my eye have the final word with the fenders on. I'm pretty sure it is but it's easier to cut 4 tack welds than trying to cut the whole perimeter weld.
The original Mustang ll wasn't that great but it has evolved into a true double wishbone IFS with Rack and pion steering that's all contained on a single crossmember. That makes it easy to adapt into pretty much any full chassis or unibody car. Therein lies the appeal !!
What it replaced was better than what the OEM produced. I put a OE surplus Mustang II front end (including crossmember) in my Willys Coupe back in the 80's. Handled so much better than the original Willys front end and did the same thing in my 36 Ford. It has been the standard for hot rods for decades.
This is the type of work I want to do. Building and modifying classics. Working at the collision repair/ body shop pays the bills. But changing plastic bumper covers on modern crossover garbage isn't very satisfying

Roller spring perch's are well worth the money and the Shelby drop really does help too!! Weld up the old holes though, leaving them creates a weak/flex spot. I'd try the stock springs, with the Shelby drop and the little bit of extra weight from the Cleveland your ride height should be pretty nice

The assembly lines were all about speed and add to that the way the cars were put together accuracy was the loser in the equation.
