“When i call your name” a heart breaker of a song… Carrie Underwood and Vince Gill How great thou art could possibly be the greatest musical performance in our lifetime
Vince and Patty Lovelace singing this at George Jones's funeral will really get you in the feels!
Yes, you should really check this version out!!!!!❤❤❤❤
They played this at my son's funeral, will always make me cry. He wrote this for his brother and a friend that passed away.
😢😢😢
The song wad written as a bluegrass song
He began writing this song for Keith Whitley - hence, you were "no stranger to the rain." Once his brother died, he finished it for him.
My mom and I both love the song and she passed away in 2020. I had them play at her funeral. Always kind of tough to watch these reactions.
He was accompanied by two other legends, Ricky Skaggs a multi-Grammy winning bluegrass musician, and Patty Loveless, recently inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame. Patty is also well worth reacting to, Vince and Patty often sang back up for one another, their voices blend beautifully. Vince also did a duet of I Will Always Love You with Dolly Parton in the mid 90s after Whitney's cover. George Jones gave Vince the nickname Sweet Pea and always called him that.
Voice always called George Jones Possum. 😂
He started writing this when his friend, Keith Whitley, passed away. He finished writing it when his brother passed away.
RIP Keith,
He first started writing this song when his friend, country singer Keith Whitley, died young from alcoholism. Some of the lyrics (no stranger to the rain) reference Keith's songs. He finished writing the song after his brother died.
My mother was mentally ill. I feel the song really reflects one's ambivalent feelings when a loved one who struggled a lot in life passes away. You miss them, but at the same time you are glad they can finally rest. I felt that way when Mom passed.
@@jmiltier-pu9dd she was correct. He started writing the song in 1989 after the death of Keith Whitley. He finished it in 1993 after the death of his older brother. There is also an unrecorded 3rd verse to the song that he will sometimes play live in concert.
The back singers was Ricky Skaggs and Allison Krause did back up
@@williamsmith1873 it's Patty Lovelace and not Allison Krause
You should see the video of him singing this at George Jones's funeral. He can barely make it through. very touching.
Vince and Carrie Underwood How Great Thou Art is pure Gold!
Just because it’s a ballad doesn’t mean it’s not country. There are thousands of country ballads. You should check out his duet with Carrie Underwood singing How Great Thou Art. You will be blown away
He wrote this for his brother who passed away 😔
You should watch the Live version of this... amazing
I heard this song the first time in 1996 at my uncle's funeral. Afterward, it has become the number one song st funerals. When my stepson died, of course, I requested this song.
A tribute to his brother. A song that resonates to all who have lost someone special in their lives.
Vince Gill is a legend no one sounds like he does
Vince has an ethereal voice and a beautiful spirit. Big part of my childhood, he is firmly a country artist
He was played with the Eagles in their later years love his voice ❤❤❤❤
He sang this song at George Jones’ memorial. Not a dry eye in the house.
Ballads are country and can be any other type of music, it's how the music is portrayed.
Too many times, too many tears. This has become a cherished song during our times of sorrow.
Vince is a great singer...love it...
He plays the third verse live. It’s not on DSPs. I just saw Vince live on Saturday night. He played for a solid 3 1/2 hours and absolutely blew me away. He has so many hits. That’s a whole rabbit hole.
This song was written in memory of his brother & his friend Keith Whitley who passed. I played it at my dad’s funeral.
This was played at my Fathers funeral. It was appropriate, Han amazing song for an amazing man!
7 years ago, August 3rd I lost My Dear Sweet Beautiful Daughter Jessica. She passed away in her sleep from the pancreastitis. She left behind a Lovely Child and husband. This same year I lost my sister. Sad time for me
I'm so sorry.
@@sabredesatanas518 Thank you so much for caring.
Love Vince. Nobody Answers When I Call Your Name, I Still Believe In You, Look at Us. Duets with Reba also. Amazing singer, songwriter and musician
Country Gospel. ❤❤❤❤❤
It's more of a hym with blue grass notes. It has comforted so many of us during our time of loss.
Vince has the voice of an angel & his guitar playing is extraordinary. He has a ton of beautiful songs, several duets with famous gals like Reba McEntire (A heart won't lie) & Patty Loveless who is singing on this one & 'When I call your name' as well. However, his collaboration with Carrie Underwood will make you cry, it's so beautiful. 'How great thou art" He only sings backup on that one, but his harmonies & his guitar solo is breathtaking & Carrie will shock you with her amazing performance. Literally AWESOME & you can see it live at a country award show! As for this performance? I have heard it at dozens of funerals & it is always moving. It is heart breaking and gives peace at the same time. Such a special song.
He wrote this song when he lost his brother.....country/gospel/ballad
I am typing through tears. This song was played at my Father in-laws funeral in 2008 and my son's funeral in 2012. I can't help but cry.
I met Vince Gill in Nashville at a banquet I was working. I served his table. He is a very nice man.. I met him at a banquet in honor of Brooks and Dun for a Humanitarian Award in. 2003. It was a great day.
He wrote this song for his older brother who was several years older and died when he (Vince) was still young.
This song is partly about Country Legend - Keith Whitley (No Stranger to the Rain).
Vince is a must go down rabbit hole!!!!
Pure Prairie League - Let Me Love You Tonight.
Wrong Facts: Cherry Bomb - was a parody band in the middle of his solo career.
Left Out: Before his solo career - Mark Knopffler asked Vince to join Dire Straits.
Vince is currently touring with the Eagles.
Vince Gill has the most beautiful voice I’ve ever heard. ❤
That's Ricky Skaggs and Patty Loveless singing with him on the chorus. Both were big artists in their own right. When Vince sang it at George Jones' memorial Patty and Ricky had to take over at the end because Vince git too choked up to sing.
When I Call Your Name (Patty Loveless on backgroubd again)
The Heart Don't Lie (duet with Reba McEntire)
Country has tons of ballads.
My husband and I have been long-time fans. Seen him live. We always say he has a voice like an Angel. And NOW he is part of the Eagles, and has been for a number of years. We've seen him live, in his solo years, and a few years back (pre-Covid) as a member of the Eagles.
It is beautiful, and I lovely wish for their journey home.
He started this song for his friend Keith Whitley, another Country legend. You heard the, you were no stranger to the rain reference, I'm no Stranger to the Rain is one of Keith's biggest hits. He finished the song when his Brother passed.
Like many others, this song was played at my grandfather's and dad's funerals.
This song was for his brother that died.it was played at my son funeral in 2017
Oh Patti Loveless is a rabbit hole u should investigate. She is a legend on her own. Such a great singer.
song about his brother's death - Vince sang this at George Jones funeral & he could barely get through it but Patty Loveless backed him & help him get through it!!! It is on RUclips & so worth a look. It will literally make you cry - it is so emotional - Garth Brooks stood up & a standing ovation occurred which help Vince finish his tribute!
He started to write the song when Keith Whitley died ( another Country singer legend) and finished it when his brother died!
Song played at hundreds of funerals
Written for his brother who died. He was unable to perform it live until George Jones memorial.
The other two people are Patty loveless, and Ricky Skaggs, both country and bluegrass backgrounds for them this is a country gospel song that he wrote for his brother and good friend Keith Whitley, when they died!! Great song he's a great singer, songwriter, and musician.
In this video the bVs are two more famous country music stars. Mr Ricky Skaggs and Mrs Patty Loveless.
He came to an extended family member’s funeral decades ago and got up and sang it live for our family at the time. Everyone wept even more. It was before the recording had been released. He is legitimately a great human.
It is 100% Country. The real Country
Ricky Skaggs the male harmony singer. Country/Bluegrass legend
The song was written for his brother, who passed away. He has since recorded another verse to the song. On albums, he sings much of his own harmony. He has also been a member of the Eagles since Glen Fry died.
Vince Gill is one of the best voices you’ll ever hear!! His voice is smooth, sexy and just melts my heart. His voice with Patty Loveless are just most beautiful harmony!! Yes it’s about dying. It’s Patty Loveless and Ricky Skaggs harmony.
We always FEEL Vince's voice! He is certainly a gifted blessing.
Thank you for sharing this beautiful touching song with us. Vince wrote this song after he lost a good friend and then his brother. Nice reaction
Singing with him are Patty Loveless and Ricky Scaggs. Country/Bluegrass Legends in their own right.
This is my favorite video of that most amazing song that includes Patty Loveless and Ricky Skaggs with the backing vocals and Ricky also on the fiddle. The sheer beauty of the music and meaning always bring tears to my eyes.
Vince started writing this song for his friend, Keith Whitley (he passed young) and finished it when his brother passed.
I couldn't see the female, but I think it was Patty Loveless. The man was Ricky Scaggs.
All three are steeped in Bluegrass, which is "mountain music".
I worked for a stagehand group back in the 1980s. Vince Gill was opening for Reba. She had 18 tractor trailers to load and unload packed full of things like mini airplanes, cars and everything heavy she could find to take on the damn tour. We were resting when Vince came through the back entrance. He shook all of our hands and thanked us for our hard work. Nicest celebrity I’ve ever met.
Vince is 100% pure country!! the harmonies are Allison Krauss and Ricky Skaggs!
His voice is gold.
He's also a fantastic musician as well!
The people with him are Patty Lovelace, and Ricky Skaggs. He wrote this originally for his brother who died.
Played this at both of my parents' funerals. Vince Gill finished writing this song after his brother died. Makes me cry every time I hear it. Patty Loveless and Ricky Skaggs sing this with him.
In addition to this being about his brother who passed sway it was also about Keith Whitley’s passing also, hence he is no stranger to the rain is in the lyrics.
This is an amazing song for faith and hope ❤️❤️❤️❤️
Every time I hear the line "when they hear your sweet voice sing" I break.... My dad sang music all of his short life, gospel and real classic country music. At the age of 42, he chose the songs to be played at his funeral. Including a couple of his own, Vern Gosdin, and one of his favorites.... Gene Watson's "Farewell Party".... songs that now, more than 36 years later, I can still barely listen to....
I would consider it more of a gospel feel
It's a song he wrote when Keith Whitley died, but really became a classic when he sang it at George Jones' funeral.
Song is about his Brother who passed away.
He wrote this song when his brother passed away it's a tribute to his brother
Vince wrote this song when his brother died. That is Patty Loveless and Rickie SKAGGS singing with him.
Loved the reaction! The woman is Patty Loveless and the man is Ricky Skaggs. Both country and Bluegrass legends. He wrote it for his brother
He wrote this song for his brother that passed. It has been sung at many a memorial service. They probably labled it country because of the instruments and because it is also his wheelhouse of singing and writing music...
Vince and Patty Lovelace singing this at George Jones's funeral is an epic event.
Patty Loveless is the lady and Ricky Skaggs the man. They are stars in their own right.
Patty Loveless has so many hits, I don't know which one to call out, but "You'll never leave Harlan alive" is up there.
That is Ricky Skaggs & Alison Krause singing with Vince. .They are 2 of the most sought after voices and instrumentalists in blue grass music. Ricky Scaggs is a multi Grammy Award winning blue grass & country singer. Alison has the voice of an angel and she can sure can play the fiddle. This song was written by Vince Gill for his brother. It is a gospel song. Very country and very spiritual,
For the longest time, I only knew him from Pure Praire League (his harmonies on Amie were great).
I’m related to Ricky Skaggs he’s a distant cousin. Our family reunion are Skaggs and Ward. He’s been there a couple times years ago. Pretty cool!
Home free did a cover of go rest high on that mountain. Superb harmonies
He started writing this for country artist Keith Whitley, but he couldn't finish it until his brother died in a car accident. He also sang this at the funeral service for George Jones. He choked up, and Patty Loveless helped him finish it. When Glen Frey from the Eagles died, he started touring with them.
Vince sings "High on the Mountan" when a police officer or firefighter passes away. He also sang it at an eight year old little girls funeral. The little was killed in a drive by shooting
Patty Loveless on the harmony vocals. Vince calls her the sister he never had b/c of the sibling harmony they to have. Patty also sang harmony for Vince on "When I call Your Name" exquisite and the song that made Vince a star. Should check out them live from the 91 Country Music Awards singing "Pocket Full of Gold" ruclips.net/video/V6SF9XY6cBw/видео.html
Such a great song.
My favorite songs from the incomparable Vince Gill are I Still Believe In You, Tryin’ To Get Over You, Whenever You Come Around, Say Hello, Look At Us, Don’t Let Our Love Start Slipping Away, One More Last Chance, and The Heart Won’t Lie (duet with Reba McEntire).
This is the Bluegrass Gospel sound. One of the basis of country music. Watch Ken Burns’ History of Country Music. Country means folk, people of the country. It is not just one kind of sound.
Vince is great. He is now playing with the eagles
Vince turned down a spot in the band Dire Straits in the late 80s. His guitar playing and voice are so fine!
You have so much to discover about the different music out there. Enjoy
Ricky and Patty are artists in their own right.
Ifound the 3rd verse on RUclips. It really finishes it.
I first heard it on my way to work one night in the 90s. It came on the radio as I passed the vet's office, where one of my dogs was in testing. At that instant, I knew we would not be taking him home.
Vince and George Jones were good friends.
My husband died in 2008 and I had them play this song at his funeral. In 2008 I attended four funerals and this song was played at three of them. I believe Go Rest High has become the number one song played at funerals, taking the position formerly held by Amazing Grace. It sounds like you think a ballad can't be country but that is not true. Many country songs are ballads. BTW, you can't really get much more country than Vince Gill or Patty Loveless or Ricky Skaggs who are the two artists who are singing harmony with Vince on this song. Patty also sings harmony with Vince on "When I Call Your Name" which is another ballad and is another beautiful country song.
Dolly Parton has a song called "Down from Dover", which, incidentally is another ballad and another country song, and years after she released it she added another verse. The verse she added makes a HUGE difference to the song and makes it much better but it is difficult to find the song with that extra verse in it. The only place I have been able to find the additional verse is on the album that has a black and white cover with Dolly sitting sideways in a chair with one arm hooked over the back of the chair. I think the song was initially written back in the late 60's or early 70's and the extra verse was not added until she re-released it on this album in 2001, so for approximately 40 years it did not have the additional verse so when Vince added to Go Rest High it was not the first time this had been done.
He wrote it for another artist who died from drugs, 2nd verse for his brother who died of a heart attack.
Vince Gill and Patty Loveless sing very well together
There are country ballads
This is Bluerass/ gospel band. That is the specific genre and the accent is the undertone, created in the South and Midwest.
He wrote this song for the brother he lost several years ago.
While living with a friend and her family in '93 I caught myself singing to one of his songs. It wasn't this song tho.. but I got into country for a while because of that. Still love the songs from that point in time.. named my daughter Shania after Shania Twain..
Beautiful ❤
Vince Gill comes by his country accent honestly as he was born in Oklahoma.
Vince has several up beat songs that are Great songs too.. everyone will request his slow songs but check out some of his more fun songs:)
country hymn.
Ol Sweet Pea💙
Ricky Skaggs and Patty Loveless on harmonies. He has done alot of work with them and they are amazing together. Vince’s voice is incomparable.
He actually wrote a 3rd verse to the song on 2019 because he said it never seems whole to him. There is only one video of him singing it with the third verse (that I’ve found anyway) and it’s not the greatest quality because it’s recorded from cell phone but you can understand the verse for the most part.
