While I prefer the revival, I think it’s interesting that in the original Whizzer and Marvin’s voices seem to be competing against each other. It’s an interesting reflection of their relationship.
I love how they don’t even kiss. The revival is definitely more gay,, it seems like they were afraid to show emotion but I guess it makes sense in the 90s
I like Spoons yeah it was more controversial at the time then then musical is now which is why it’s less ...gay is how I guess I’m phrasing it. I think that’s one of the reasons it was a good idea to revive it, see how much could change because how much time has changed ya know? But yeah things change with the times
I understand why some people are complaining about them acting straight, but in addition to the public being much more overtly homophobic back then, there’s actual an explanation from a story standpoint Marvin has a hard time accepting his own sexuality. He doesn’t deny being gay, but he tries to really play up his masculinity while simultaneously playing up Whizzer femininity, since as he reveals in I Never Wanted to Love you, he wanted to be straight and be with Trina, even though his sexuality got in the way. When you take that into account, it makes sense that he would have a hard time showcasing his sexual desires in this song.
I know people are used to the excellent and open revival choreography, but I think they did great with what they had. Love what the did with the chair separation and Marvin pulling him back, and the sort of rare physical affection did make that ending hit harder.
It's so weird watching the instrumental near the end without seeing the amazing choreography. If you hadn't seen the show, it would be hard to tell if they were dating or not. I liked the deliveries better in the new version, but I guess the whole point of a revival is to make small changes that improve the performance. This show was probably more controversial at the time than it is today, so there were more boundaries in place when it came to acting super gay. This was different, but these men still did a great job with their performances based on the circumstances.
Yeah, I know in this version there isn't much choreography which makes it a bit boring, but (I'm not sure about this) I think this didn't have a choreographer while in the revival there was one.
I like the revival better because it makes it less awkward. But people were like really uncomfortable with gay back then, like did you hear that gasp when Marvin dips Whizzer (which I actually wanted to see in the revival) but I just like the revival better.
So many negative comments about this number! I can't be the only one who really likes it?? The revival is magnificent and passionate, love it to bits. But this, this is so intense. While the revival is a dance, this is a battle. Two different kinds of "fights". I especially like the way they just sit and stare at each other at first during the instrumental part. It's simultaneously domestic and really intimate?? It's great!
i wholeheartedly agree! you actually get to see more of the genuine resentment they harbor toward each other here rather than just a playful push and pull, not quite the same flirty and fun vibes as in the revival but i kind of like it that way
You can really tell they had to make a gay show the least gay it could possibly be. They’re good actors but like... it’s like they barely act like they’re together at all in this. If it didn’t say it in the lyrics itself I wouldn’t be sure. And that’s obviously not the actors fault it’s the direction. Evidently is most likely a result of the time period, with an audience very not accustomed to seeing two men together they couldn’t really show much all at once.
They have amazing voices but their stagework isnt great. I prefer the revival when they are moving a lot, since it's a bit boring seeing these two just sit there, especially through that amazing instrumental.
See, I feel like this shows why I enjoy the revival cast better because although their voices sound good, I feel like the revival cast feels their emotions more when they sing.
OK! people say they don't this part but 2:26 the look, the way they are sitting while the music plays, the little laugh, i find it a very powerful scene
That's so good, their voices are amazing. Idk:) i feel like they talk to each other with their eyes and it just so romantic. We don't need kisses or things like that, when we have THIS MASTERPIECE. I just love it uwu
"why does this look so straight" ?????? as a gay man i do not perceive it that way at all, maybe you all have some stereotypes you need to work through.
I think what people mean by that is just, they don't really act like a couple, they act a lot more like two straight men sitting on a couch. Like in the revival, in this song, both actors are all over each other, they very much act like a couple, but that's not quite here in this one. I don't think it's a stereotype thing, more of a chemistry thing. I'm also lgbt myself.
Natalie they literally act exactly the same in this as in the revival and i dont agree whatsoever that they """seem straight""" and it doesnt matter if youre just in the community, if youre not a GAY MAN you cant pull that card
Okay so this is great.. I’m watching a bunch of versions and what I’m noticing is that it all depends on the dance break. If the dance break isn’t choreographed well then it changes the whole thing. I understand it’s the 90s and they are doing there best to act gay it just doesn’t have chemistry. It doesn’t show how sexual Whizzer is and how much his love relies on sex. It was sad how they didn’t show the kind of passion their relationship had but the vocals were amazing. You couldn’t even tell that they were together if the lyrics didn’t say it. Even with the lyrics they just look like horny friends that need something to do.
Weird fetishists talking about how they like the revival more because of a kiss and even calling this "straight".. this was William Finn's vision and both versions are great. Also this song is supposed to highlight the problems in their relationship. This is NOT supposed to be romantic, get it right.
My ONLY gripe with this version is the lack of movement at ALL during the interlude. Its so upbeat and bouncy and they're kinda just sitting there, thats why i liked it when they started pushing the chairs around. I just wish they did SOMETHING, it didnt necessarily need to be the 'gay dancing' from the revival version, just ANYTHING. But other than that, people need to realize that 1) the 90s were a different time, this makes sense for the time it was performed, and 2) this version of Whizzer and Marvin make just as much sense as tbe revival versions. Marvin still isnt entirely comfortable with his sexuality yet, which is why he's trying to force Whizzer into the traditionally feminine role in their relationship for all of act 1. Hes not entirely sure what to do or HOW to love Whizzer, so yeah its kinda awkward cause Marvin doesnt know what hes doing, unlike Whizzer. Both the original and the revival are equally enjoyable and make sense with the characters. Yall need to chill. They sound FANTASTIC
there was a lot i really enjoyed about this voice wise (both as in singing and just use of tone, pacing etc) but the movement is so uncomfortable to watch as a whole to me?? i think there’s a lot of moments where just nothing is happening where there should be and the moments they do have a lot of movement seem really restricted? idk
3:25 - 3:41 WHAT is THat? Where is my gAy DanCinG? Jk, I understand that it was controversial at that time, still...shouldn’t have the homophobic people known that and decide to NOT go?? Like it would be fine if they did all that gay stuff if only people who where supportive of it went and of course people who are homophobic would be disgusted to “”waste””” money on this “””””””””””””””sinful””””””””””””””” performance
While I prefer the revival, I think it’s interesting that in the original Whizzer and Marvin’s voices seem to be competing against each other. It’s an interesting reflection of their relationship.
mandy patinkin wasnt the original marvin but i get what ur saying and i totally agree, i love listening to them side by side
It legit kinda sounded like he said "whizzer has unlimited knowledge of shrek" and now I'm laughing bc sAme
you’re on every video 😭🙏🏻
I like when the couches get pushed apart by Marvin and then he pulls them back together! Genius foreshadowing!
also when whizzer pushes out the couch and marvins is the only one left. THE ACT 2 FORESHADOWINGG
I love the originals, but I think the revival did a good job at making this look less awkward
yeah i think they have more chemistry in the revival?
The Phantom Runner true and this tempo is way to slow
@@briantoal8872 it just sounds a little faster in the revival, so maybe the person who commented is more used to the newer version
@@briantoal8872 yo chill

I mean being gay was way more taboo back then too, even if it is a period piece I'd say the revival blocking reflects a more modern perspective
Original felt like they were at couples therapy, which is kinda funny
I understand why some people are complaining about them acting straight, but in addition to the public being much more overtly homophobic back then, there’s actual an explanation from a story standpoint

trueeeee
That's true, I think both this version and the newer one make sense in their own ways and contexts

Yeah no one gives it enough credit. Bill barely got the show on Broadway
i had no clue it was mandy though.....HIS VOICE IS SO DEEP
IKR whenever i remember that's mandy i'm like WHAT
Holy shit. What rare footage. Thank you! Got any more from this show?

thought the camera was blowing up halfway through there
I love Falsettos and Mandy Patinkin but he is not who I would normally think to cast as Whizzer.
He plays Marvin, not Whizzer
lmabes he played Marvin
lmabes he played Marvin
But they aren't gay enough
Ok that sounded offensive on my half, but like they aren't flamboyant enough

who knew that jason gideon could sing
He was in Evita too! Sang some really high stuff in Goodnight and Thank You. Unlike now, they belted Che's part during that song.
He has a beautiful voice, I heard him before I saw him
They have amazing voices but their stagework isnt great. I prefer the revival when they are moving a lot, since it's a bit boring seeing these two just sit there, especially through that amazing instrumental.
This is so incredible to see!
I really love falsettos but this just lacks the fluidity and passion that the revival cast has
eilidh well it was probably more awkward and controversial at that time than it is today

Omg this is cool I love falsettos!!!!! I love the OG stuff 😁
Running around with little chairs was hella cute tbh 😍 Having a slower version of the song really isn't that bad either. Their voices were so strong.
mandy patinkin is such a king, what cant he do?
Whizzer: [Throws Marvin's jacket.]
Also Whizzer: Pick up your clothes, Marvin.
4:08 Has me screeching
At least the ending has a really violent fake kiss 😭✌

the wobble just gets me😂😂😂
Falsettos, but Marvin and Whizzer are your granddads who really wanted to be opera singers but never got around to it
I love Mandy Patinkin's singing voice!
It feels like I'm watching two straight men
Mare Bear true, but it was the 90s
It was a different time.
Mare Bear thats because you are
Mare Bear agreed
Mare Bear You missed the point, they’re both upset and saying very clearly: Passion dies , I’d kill for the thrill of first love ...
The dislike is Jason
Mari Anime or Trina being salty
But Jason likes Whizzer
It’s so funny how cold this version is

RIGHT? it's so offensive to say that. It's mostly non-mlm's saying this too.
