Milo is Very high im sorry, i know this comment is 2 years old but, what do you mean about rent not given a chance? They performed at the Tony’s, and performed Seasons of Love, and La vie boheme A & B, where they sang the you know, slurs. So why couldnt they said the word homosexuals lmao
This musical was quite, how do you say...daring, for the time that it was put on Broadway, the main story follows two sets of gay couples, living in the 70s, affairs and cheating, a kid in the middle of it, the whole shabang! Still their are a few aspects that are still relatively safe and traditional as one would put it but still, how was this on Broadway in the 90s? (I'm not complaining, I love Falsettos so much, I'm just curious:) )
this is an industry that was still reeling from the mass death of many in their community. most people don’t talk about it but after the golden age of theater in the 1960’s, the 70’s saw the area filled with seediness. then the AIDS crisis of the 1980’s came around. i can only make the assumption that everyone in the audience here lost someone due to the crisis. there a book called “razzle dazzle” that explains this a lot better than i could. but after you learn about this, a lot of shows set in the 70’s begin to make more sense.
Theater was more expecting of lgbt themes a lot sooner than the world in general. Take for example shows like rent, kinky boots, even boys in the band.
ive never seen or heard the original 90's casting until now and im realizing how close they got to the original cast's voices for the 2016 revival and im kinda scared not gonna lie

+I stand with WADA No. It was a marketing choice, nothing to do with any network. They were trying to position the show as a story about unconventional Jewish families and complicated relationships (which it is) not another "gay musical" (which it also is). The result was that some people bought tickets, thinking they were going to see a light-hearted musical comedy about Jewish families on the Upper West Side, and ended up watching a story about gay men dying of Aids and families being torn apart. The original Broadway production ran for a year, and heavily discounted tickets were available for the whole run.
It's really interesting getting to see different interpretations of the characters. Especially Jason. I like Anthony's version better when he's debating about whether or not he might be gay too. Anthony sounds a lot more worried and I like that. But I much prefer this kids take on the line "Cause I'm too smart for my own good". Something about him really sells that he believes it
I have seen many Broadway musicals in my day. Over one hundred original and first run shows since 1980. I can honestly say without heistation that Falsettos in 1992 is the best musical I have ever seen in NY. The ensemble cast, simple set, lyrics, and use of character to tell a story is a perfect example of theatre art. Every theater lover should have seen this one, it is a masterpiece. Chip Zien and Barbara Walsh shine in every performance they give.
Every human being who loves musical theatre should have seen this. It still remains the best musical that I have ever seen (and I have seen them all). It shows that less is more, just look at the simple set and props....no dry ice, helicopters, etc.. Just incredible lyrics, music, and the amazing use of character to tell a story. Kevin Kelly, the theatre reviewer for the Boston Globe called it "an eloquent masterpiece" in his 1993 review. That was an understatement in my opinion.
I saw March of the Falsettos in 1980 and marvelled at it's musical brilliance and ended up seeing it half a dozen times. Then I saw Falsettoland a decade later which devastated me with it's sensitivity and humanity. Years later I saw a regional production of Falsettos which is the combination of the two shows and was enchanted and remain grateful to Mr Finn for writing such a masterpiece of musical theatre that I could see again and again.
