And apparently Christian was a massive fan of Michael because he went to see Falsettos and was really starstruck when he worked with him (on Elegies, before Legally Blonde)
YASS I was hoping Marvin would dip Whizzer at the end because I always imagined it like that but then he was sitting down and I didn't think they were going to then BAM there's the dip why am I so happy about this I love them
this difference is that in 1992, a gay couple could do a looot less on the broadway stage than what they can do now. im sure if James Lapine could’ve, he would’ve directed this one with as much passion and action as the revival, but that wasn’t an option. it’s a testament to how far we’ve come, in the arts and as a nation
Could someone explain to me the story of the musical I mean of the new one since all I know is: gay man broke up with wife is dating a boi now, there's also this kid and jews. So yea I need some help
Not to be rude as you seem young, but to condense the story down to 'gays and there is also a child and jews' without even Googling a short synopsis is pretty offensive. This musical was originally written and on Broadway in the height of the AIDS crisis, and about the Jewish identity and concept of family in the wake of families being torn apart by finding out that their loved one was gay or dying in such a time of stigma. I understand where you're coming from. You didn't get the full scope of things. But at least have the courtesy to look it up before coming into a comment section to 'haha gay man dating man now and he is jew and has kid'.
I really enjoyed their performances separately and I love how they play their character’s but together... I just didn’t feel like they had much chemistry. They seemed more like friends than people who are in a relationship and attracted to each other, I haven’t watched the whole bootleg so maybe their chemistry is better in other scenes, I just felt that the performance of this in the revival seemed much more genuine and believable.
So I am young don't judge me, but I heard the revival first and that little I instrumental where the new Marvin and Whizzer are kissing and being steamy. (Wth am I saying) these ones where pushing chairs and I'm just like "what on earth is happening"
They're pushing chairs bc this version was made in 1992, then people were more homophobic than they are nowadays, so they aren't kissing bc it could be considered disgusting (even if they were just playing their roles)
I could choreograph this better. Especially the interlude at the end. I really liked the dip, as how I imagined it would end before I watched the video
Things were much complicated back then, even La cage had it difficulties in making the gay couples be gay due to controversy and Shit. Musicals like this actually helped the gay community come out more because putting subjects like this out on stage was already a big step back then. Now it's like OK because everybody is accepting. I bet you some of the audience watching this back then were homophobes
@@UmmOopsyreplying way later but there's an interesting journal I think that I read that was written 4 years after the broadway debut, and it talked about criticism of the show and how all that criticism falls short because most all of it is rooted in a very heteronormative perspective of the show and a very literal label-heavy perspective that kept the idea of the characters more than the characters themselves. Everyone was obsessed with their labels more than them as characters which sadly still happens today
I mean if you want to invent time travel, go back in time, and record this specific performance from the 90s with an expensive camera that records in 4k, then go ahead. However, considering what it was recorded on and saved on(vhs. Holy shit those were a thing I know it really was a 90s kid thing who could have guessed) this bootleg is in incredible condition
I love how Michael Rupert and Christian Borle both play Marvin and they were on Legally Blonde together👌
And apparently Christian was a massive fan of Michael because he went to see Falsettos and was really starstruck when he worked with him (on Elegies, before Legally Blonde)
What is this.... A cross over episode???
Its so satisfying

whoever recorded this is a god and we should be grateful that a bootleg was made
I have no idea on the backstory, but I think this is from that reviewer who would buy out rows of seats in theatres and record bootlegs.
@@jamesoniris2647 wait I've heard that before, do you know what his name was?
@@mahi6217 Nope, I just remember reading about it in a Sweeney Todd Bootleg.
@@jamesoniris2647 yup and he ended up getting banned from all of broadway

Crazy how Marvin and whizzer don’t even kiss in this version of the show and yet still have insane chemistry
Michael Rupert is literally the best ever. He is my inspiration to go on in musical theatre

I really enjoy this version idk it gives me such nice vibes and it’s not too much just subtle enough
I love the way they sing the last part of this song so much
I think this is my favorite version.
I've watched the last 10 seconds enough times i have it ingrained in my brain
What a difference a good director and interesting choreography makes! I'm not really a fan of this but I adore the revival
Steph Piano ironic part is that the director for this production and the revival is the same. James Lapine.

it sounds like he said "whizzer has unlimited knowledge of shrek" oh my god i hate being part of gen z
