ahaha i'm the girl in the blue sweater who got brought up for March of the Falsettos! guys, this production was so so so good. i sobbed throughout the entire second act. the NAMES quilt being brought out at the end was such a good choice. congrats to everyone in the cast :)
Omg the baseball tees with the numbers, mendels says 42 which unless it has another meaning there usually symbolizes the answer the life the universe and everything (it was just towel day a few days ago!!), Whizzers says 69 which is everyone’s favourite silly number that symbolizes his constant sexual activity leading to his demise, and Marvin’s having 01 symbolizing his egotistical natures, and Jason’s being 13 because he is our favourite unlucky child. I mean the numbers definitely could have more reference to the original productions (march of the falsettos/falsettoland) or even in trousers but I’m also the type of person who looks for every detail and thinks out anything that could possibly be a reference to anything else.
42 could also be referring to Jackie Robinson, the Dodgers’ batter. I think it’s likely since we know Mendel is a Dodgers fan because he references Sandy Koufax, another dodger.
Got confused for a moment by the last scene until I realized the connection between the names being laid down. Beautiful and devastating. God, this production is good.
That’s because most of the choreo, blocking, and direction are shamelessly stolen from the 2016 Broadway production. These poor actors were probably told to just copy instead of making their own choices.

i've seen countless variations of this show and while I always get teary eyed at the ending I can usually hold it together at this point, but man, the NAMES quilts being brought out fucking ruined me.
Hate to say it but I feel like without the blocks and props this show isn’t it. Also the actors mess up a lot of the tone in most of the songs, idk I’m being a snob but nothing will beat the original cast. Anyway I digress, they did their best and I appreciate the effort and attempt to bring falsettos to the table again.
Hi! Ever heard the phrase “if you don’t have anything nice to say don’t say anything at all?” I don’t usually respond to hate comments, but I was lucky enough to see this show live- and while it may not be your cup of tea, I thoroughly enjoyed it and I do not need to go around spreading unnecessary hate lol. Tones were incredible and the use of the chess board floor is just as innovative. Anyways, goal of a community or even high school production is not to copy the original, but to bring your own version of the characters and story and even set to the table. Putting on a show takes so so much work and I’d like to see you try to do better. Oh! And the original cast didn’t use blocks, the revival did, so I think you just meant the 2016 version. Get your facts straight before you hate!!! Xx
@@possiblycam I mean, I loved this production, and I still think it's fine for someone to comment a valid critique. They weren't unnecessarily cruel, and, honestly, there is some truth to the issues they raised. There is usually at least one obvious wrong note in the more complicated harmonies (usually Jason, because he's a child and therefore still in need of some vocal training). The lack of props does hurt the show in a few places (kitchen scenes especially). The chess board floor is innovative and works a lot of the time, but sometimes doesn't hit quite right. Those are pretty valid reasons to dislike a production. Anyway. A lot of proper art appreciation is being able to communicate what doesn't work and why, as well as what you like. If people only ever said nice things about theater, the vast majority of reviewers would be out of a job. There's a clear difference between criticism and hate, and this is the former. Most performers do expect some level of criticism, especially when posting their work on such a public platform.
@@taylorbowser571 I understand this person did not have cruel intent with their comment. I’m going try to keep this short (I failed) as you are entitled to your opinion… even if I believe there is a time and a place for criticisms of community productions (regarding any alleged tones being off) you may think otherwise and that’s okay! I’m all for media literacy and analyzation. However the lack of props in the story of Falsettos and how they change has always affected the meanings behind the story and has been interpreted in many ways. For example, having minimal kitchenware is sort of making a point. I don’t think the lack of props hurts the show. Anyways I’m a huge geek about representation of metaphors in theatre so I’d actually be super interested to hear why you think the chess board floor doesn’t hit right, I genuinely find it fascinating. If not though, that’s totally cool. If I came off as harsh in my original comment that wasn’t really my intent either! Like I said I’m a huge theatre geek and as someone who loves Falsettos dearly I feel the need to defend a production I love with my life haha. Have a good day :)
@@possiblycam @possiblycam Thanks for the thoughtful reply! I also failed miserably to be concise here, but I tried laying out my thoughts regarding the set as best as I can. I have many, and it is about 4 AM right now, so it's probably not all that well-organized of writing. Falsettos, in general, is a show that is absolutely packed with figurative representations of concrete events and feelings, and, IMO, that’s one of its strengths. The abstract nature of most of the songs is really artistically sophisticated. But it can also be a bit intimidating/confusing to the first-time viewer, especially if that viewer is newer to musical theater. Among other things, this means directors need to be extra intentional with how they choose to stage the show (blocking, set design, costuming, the whole shebang). The props/set, like everything else, can be beautifully metaphorical (ex:. the Broadway revival) when done well, but quickly become overly confusing or pretentious with even one misstep. In other words, if you’re not careful, it won’t “hit right”. I'd have to do a rewatch to point out each time I didn't love the chessboard floor, but I remember feeling iffy during The Chess Game. (For the record, I do think utilizing the floor-board during that number was a great idea, I just feel like they did it too early.) Any time I'm evaluating a show for audience accessibility/ease of interpretation, I imagine how my mom (who is not all that familiar with less-than-traditional story structures) would interpret it. I _know_ she'd be confused. Are they literally playing chess? Is it all a metaphor for their relationship? Just what is going on here? For you and me, who know the show well and have thought about it a lot, the answer is obvious. It's both. Yeah, Whizzer and Marvin are playing a real game, and _also_ that game is shorthand for their relationship as a whole. We aren’t confused by the 100% metaphorical staging because we’ve seen previous iterations where they’re sitting down just playing normally. But I'm not sure it’s all that clear to a novice theater-goer, who has no context for the show, or for more metaphorical lyrics and stagings in general. I feel like starting out with them playing chess on a board, and then moving at some point to become the chess pieces on the floor, would have communicated the scene better. Otherwise, there's a high chance that a large portion the audience is going to be so preoccupied with trying to understand what's happening that they'll miss a lot of the lyrics, or just genuinely not enjoy themselves. And this production makes choices like that frequently. Stuff that repeat viewers will _love_ , but a newer audience will not only miss, but be distracted by. Sometimes it works, sometimes it does not. The costuming in March of the Falsettos is an example of when it goes splendidly. People _will_ spend time trying to figure out what the numbers mean. But that song in particular is so repetitive that a bit of distraction doesn’t mean missing anything, and it’s so obviously non-literal that nobody will be confused by symbolic costumes. Again, I'd have to watch the whole thing over to pick out each time something like this works vs doesn't work, and why - but I remember a decent amount of ups and downs with this production. I also don't think they always made the best choices when deciding which parts of the set to leave out, or how everything should look visually. Minimal sets are pretty much tradition with Falsettos, yes, but it requires a level of skill and vision to be executed properly (The Broadway revival is my favorite example, and they actually make a point of having detailed kitchen props. The OBC is great, too, but in different ways.). Basically, with the right art direction/design, the sparse set is very meaningful. It can contribute to feelings of claustrophobia, or unreality, or dysfunction, or of everyone being hapless “pawns” of fate/their own past mistakes/hubris (which is what I think this director was aiming for). But because the set pieces themselves didn't _look_ all that cohesive here, it didn't feel intentional enough to effectively communicate anything. I mostly walked away feeling, like, "dang, I'm Breaking Down and This Had Better Come To A Stop visually looked very cheap, like a high school production". It kind of felt like more of a budget restraint than an artistic choice. And that's not awesome. Overall, I remember thinking that this is a version of Falsettos meant for people who already know the show, and that new viewers might not always understand or enjoy it. Which is fine! That's a fine way to stage something. I’m the target audience, and I personally enjoyed it loads. Most people who regularly attend live theater would understand all of it, and probably love it. It's just not super accessible, and I feel like there was more of a balance to be found. And there was a real lack of visual cohesion that made it seem, like I said, kind of cheap. It's suspect that the director is young/green, and still kind of finding their footing. I also think it's more than fine for people to publicly criticize even community productions, as long as it’s polite and constructive. But, regardless, this _isn't_ a community theater. It's a small production company run by formally trained (but rather young) actors. So, more off-off-off-off-broadway or “elevated student production” than "local small town show". They’re doing incredible for how new and tiny they are, and have obvious talent and upwards trajectory (the art direction and casting have both improved buckets since their just-pretty-good production of Fun Home last year) but I feel like constructive criticism will serve them well as they continue.
@@taylorbowser571 You make good points with the argument that this production is meant for people who are already familiar with the production- after all anyone directing the show would likely be really familiar with the morals behind it. That’s a really cool way to think about this production and I can totally get behind it. I completely get using an outside perspective to see how people can interpret it is helpful, as I went to go see the show with mu dad, who thoroughly enjoyed the production. As for the effectiveness of the minimal set, I guess that’s where our opinions differ but that’s totally fine. I am hoping that with the way the set makes you think, regardless of how effective the message is, that more people will begin to become intrigued by the morals behind the show. Thanks for the thoughtful conversation about one of my favorite medias!
