Blown away. I find this one of the most gorgeous and heartbreaking duets in all of musical theatre, and this performance was just stunning. Can't wait to see the revival.
I was fortunate enough to be reach up and touch Mr. Patinkin at the Golden Theatre in February, 1993, during his run with this amazing show. Those who don't think he made a good Marvin: I have to disagree with you completely. The man is one of the best American talents alive today and gave an amazing performance, in my opinion.
i know this comment is 13 years old but i agree completely. i feel like a lot of people have forgotten the point of the show and its original charm since the revival came out. and so many people watching the revival without bothering to appreciate the works that came before, including mandy's performance. it's shameful
i might be stupid for this, but i only just realized recently that when marvin says "who the hell then threw this curve" he was talking about whizzer, not himself. i'd always subconsciously assumed that marvin was feeling sorry for himself, that he didn't deserve to have the love of his life taken from him. but then i remembered how much marvin had changed throughout the musical, which made me realize that he was talking about whizzer, and how whizzer didn't deserve to lose his life. made me emotional as hell
The curve was AIDS. I know that. When I first listened to the musical, I thought Marvin was referring to his loss of Whizzer. But I came to realize that he was asking who sent the curve - AIDS - to Whizzer. I know that they both have it and were both thrown the curve (btw, just realized this is a baseball reference), but in this moment he is standing at Whizzer’s grave and singing a love song to him. I hope you get what I meant now
Wow, I had no idea Many Patinkin ever played this part!?! FALSETTOS (or FALSETTOLAND as the show is also known by) is one of my all-time favourite musicals with some of the most beautiful melodies in Musical Theatre, and to hear M.P. put his own inimitable style to this wonderful song just made my day. Thank you for sharing this clip with us!
wow I think every time I watch him in something I find I can't look away.. Mandy is always a favorite of mine. And between the show of this I was in and the broadway cast recording I've seen and watched many times from the pit, this song gets me every time.. It is definitely something special in Mandy's voice, those lows and the power and control in the highs.. yet the quiet parts are equally powerful. In our version of this song they danced for a part singing into each other's ear.
i wish i could go back in time and watch this performance. i feel like mandy brings out the power in stephen's voice, while also being extremely powerful himself, making the whole show that much more emotional
Oh Mandy...what would I do indeed...come back to the theater and sing for us again. Whoever found this clip and posted it rocks...thank you for sharing it with us.
This is an AMAZING piece of footage?!!! Wow - I didn't even know he ever did this. I watched it yest before I had to go audition and do this part where I cried on cue. THIS did it! ;-) Oy... just amazing
i love this a lot, it's really good, however, one thing i love about christian and andrew in the revival, is that they have different voices. it makes the lines that overlap more distinguishable about who's singing what line. whereas, in the original broadway falsettos (1992 cast). mandy and stephen's voices blend almost too well, to the point they sound like one person, when it's meant to be a duet. i just think the actor's voices are too similar to each-other's, idk. this is still amazing don't get me wrong, i just prefer the revival for the distinct difference (also i just adore andrew rannells so-)
kaylin ? It wasn't just in the revival. The falsettoland reprise was in Falsettos (March of the falsettos + Falsettoland), this bootleg is just Falsettoland
Falsettos is actually 'March of the Falsettos', the second of the Marvin Trilogy, 'In Trousers' is the first of the three, 'March of the Falsettos' being next and 'Falsettoland' being the third chapter.
Oh. My. God. I never thought to look up this show here until today. I can't believe this has been posted. Thank you. My favourite Broadway song from my favourite musical ever. Breaks my heart every time. I've never heard Mandy sing it before. Stunning. But Michael will always be my fave. Simply heartbreaking.
wow it is nice to FINALLY see patinkin in this role. He missed SO many performances that Philip Hoffman got moved up from understudy to alternate... randy graf was also in the show during this time. Love her but not in this role...Philip hoffman was amazing second only to mr rupert... sean mcdermott was his whizzer i believe, Sean was actually closer to Jason in age than any of the marvins so it made it kind of ICKY at the baseball game...just sayin
Can I just say that the date is off on this because March of the Falsettos 1st played in 1981 and Falsettoland (second act) first played in 1990 and I believe the 2 were 1st combined into Falsettos in 1992 and Michael Rupert played Marvin 1st and then Patinkin replaced him. I love Mandy Patinkin as an actor, but I just cant see him as Marvin, but it may just be that I'm used to Michael Rupert as him from the cds, but I also love hearing Chip Zien playing Marvin on the In Trousers cd.
The videos should be up soon! We just filmed it today and we will also be taping it tomorrow (Trina and Cordelia are double cast). I'll have to get pictures up too.
Brian Toal I personally love tons of vibrato. It’s a great technique that can be difficult to master, and really improve a performance. Some people, like Mandy here, have it naturally and find it much easier to sing with vibrato and sound better with it than when singing straight tone. I think it’s a shame that most modern broadway performers don’t make much use of it.
Blown away. I find this one of the most gorgeous and heartbreaking duets in all of musical theatre, and this performance was just stunning. Can't wait to see the revival.
Its the “one hour more” that always gets me
Oh hey Jay. Lmao
Damian Butler YOU LIKE FALSETTOS TOO???
@@jaybird6396 damn right i do!! It got me weeping for real
Damian Butler if u ever want a 1080 hp version of the revivals proshot hmu bro, we’re in the same boat ALL TEARS
@@jaybird6396 i just watched it last night. And i must have cried for a good 10 minutes both during and after it ended.
"Falsettos" is actually a combination, "March" being act I and "Falsettoland" being act II.
This is a piece of history! Thank you!
SO
MUCH
VIBRATO
love it though
toootally agreed
@hellen...
.......shhhhhhhhhhhh!

I’m a huge fan of & idolize one of my fave Broadway kings, Mandy. Whatever role he plays, is nothing but perfection.

no, he was talking about AIDS - threw them the curve
@@julieelizabethknell22 I never said anything to the contrary

the vibrato enhancing the emotion god help me im ij tears
This is fantastic! Although I'm not quite sure how this was taken in 1982 since Falsettoland wasn't written until 1990...
yes, and mandy was in "falsettos" not just falsettoland.
think they meant 1992
I think it originally titled "1982" because that's the year Whizzer dies
The video of the full performance says it's from 1994
Yes, this is from the Broadway run of Falsettos in 1993. Mr. Patinkin played Marvin from Jan 19-May 30, 1993.
Performing this for five weekends last year was possibly the best theater experience of my life.
Wow, I had no idea Many Patinkin ever played this part!?!

i love mandy as marvin soooo much

Act 2 takes place in 1982 was the point, I think!
i think the poster just got confused!
perfection- and I am not a Mandy fan- but omg- the combo of his voice and stephens? flawless
Oh Mandy...what would I do indeed...come back to the theater and sing for us again. Whoever found this clip and posted it rocks...thank you for sharing it with us.
The crescendo Mr. Patinkin does at 1:19 just KILLS me every time

I am also playing Marvin currently. Its at Oakland University in Michigan
i love that, even dead, whizzer still has the presence of mind to make innuendos
Wait why did it fade to black? Did they not end it with Falsettoland reprise?
kaylin ? It wasn't just in the revival. The falsettoland reprise was in Falsettos (March of the falsettos + Falsettoland), this bootleg is just Falsettoland
@@patrickspencer2787 No, this is on Broadway. Falsettoland looks different and has the reprise uploader just cut out it out.

Mandy's voice is amazing on this incredibly moving piece.

Hey... I saw you as Jason.. You were great!
I think the poster had a typo and meant to say 1992, when this was on Bway, Mandy opened as Marvin on 4:29/92.

Mandy P slamming that harmony honey. fucking 20 year later.
Ooh nice! Vids? Pics?
1991, not 1982 !!!!!
Is this really 1982? So right before Mandy did Sunday in the Park with George? For how long did he play Marvin?
no, this had to be 1991 during the broadway run when falsettos was put together as one show!
Mandy Patinkin played was the replacement for Marvin in the 90s, so this could only have happened then.
Boot,please :3
This is great, but it can’t be ‘82. Must be ‘92
So much vibrato🙄 they didn’t know better back then tho
