i have 3a hair and my routine is very similar to this and it works perfectly for me. goes to show that paying attention to your porosity, density, and protein moisture balance is way more important than the curl type.
Hey, Tabitha, your hair looks great. I was experiencing lots of trouble getting my waves and curls to clump up, and I no longer struggle as much and just wanted to share what dramatically helped me. First of all, the Shea moisture yogurt mask is a very intense protein mask (it sent my hair into protein overload after only using it 2 times, 1 month apart), which can cause your hair to be dry. Hair that isn’t hydrated fully is the main culprit behind having trouble forming clumps, that’s why our hair clumps better when it’s wet (hydration comes from water). I stopped using that mask and bought one without any protein whatsoever and swapped out my gels and mousses (which tend to be drying) for custards, or at least gels containing oils and other hydrating ingredients. I saw a drastic difference not too long after making these changes. Now my hair is much more hydrated and it wants to clump up when it’s wet and I also don’t struggle with it tangling when moving my head around when wet. Just wanted to suggest that you consider swapping out the mask for a few wash days and see if it helps. Thanks for your videos!
My hair is exactly like yours, at least in curl size and shape. I really have to finger coil or twist using a brush in order to get a proper curl, but most days I just scrunch and let the loose waves do what they want to do. I'm usually happy with the results, mainly because I've learned not to covet the very defined spirals others have.
This is exactly the routine that I do. Tip for the back: when you are brushing your hair turn your head to the side, separate the back hair and brush it through while you are turned to the side. Then do exactly the same on the other side. When scrunching your hair also scrunch from the sides. But besides that I do all exactly the same for curl like waves.
Your hair is seriously so pretty! This is a very helpful video! Thank you!

I’ve been following you for a while, but always had longer hair, now I’ve cut my hair short(ish) for the first time since starting wearing them wavy, and I’ve been struggling to figure out how to shape them, I’m surprised how differently they behave even after cutting just 15cm! So this video is very helpful!
@anna burns do you struggle with getting a bunch of stringy waves? Because that’s my biggest issue...My hair is very damaged right now it’s a very slight 2a on a good day, so when it gets like that it makes my barely there waves almost non existent
My hair is not damaged at all. No color. The fineness is in my genetics. Since birth I have had baby fine hair that is unmanageable due to it's softness. I have tried bond repair, but I really don't need them since my hair is not damaged and when I have used them, I don't like what they do to my hair. My hair likes a small amount of protein, which I get in my conditioner and styling product.
This is something that Tabitha briefly mentioned in the video, but I have real trouble taming my hair after washing upside down. It all wants to stay on top of my head in one giant clump and gets all tangled and messed up in the process of parting my hair and turning it the right way up again. Anyone know what I'm talking about? I'm just starting out.
So happy I found your channel! I'm working on my curls and all other girls I found have these popping curls and I was getting down my curls are not working with me! But I love this method and the fact you are training your curls to clump like this, I'll have a go, thank you 🤗 hugs from UK
I used to have problems getting curl clumps too but i found doing 30 mins of deep conditioning after shampoo w a hot head has helped. My hair needs to be moisturized to clump. Maybe that would work for you too.
Her hair looks gorgeous. Idk if anyone else has 2b/2c fine texture medium density hair like mine but getting clumps is difficult when the individual strands are so thin. If I can get a good cast and shape I'm happy but there's not much to do with naturally 80's style waves except tame them or straighten them which is murder on your hair.
We have the same curl type and length of hair. Im kinda depressed and frustrated to get my hair at the back to get clumped because it's so short. Idk I feel like giving up this process and just straighten my hair out. I get tired and frustrated. I just want to get my hair to look good. Sometimes there's days that my clumps are beautiful, sometimes it's messed up like now.
have you ever tried wet plopping. i started doing it and it has helped so much with getting good clumps that are hydrated. i do it for probably 5-10 minutes right out of the shower and then micro plop to get out excess moisture and then air dry or diffuse
I can’t help but wonder but does washing your hair upside down actually make a difference and help enhance waves? Seems like such an extra steps but if it does I’m willing to try. Help!?
I was going to mention in the video and totally forgot, that I don’t nearly always wash my hair upside down! I think it’s easier to clump if I do the product application upside down in the tub with the faucet right there, but I don’t think it’s necessary for shampooing or even conditioning! Hope that helps 🤍
This looks like my hair... in the front. My hair in the back is barely wavy. Some days I find this frustrating, other days I embrace it because it looks like I purposely curled the hair that frames my face. My son got the opposite of my hair. His hair is practically straight on top but he had 3a curls underneath and at the back (his hair is almost shoulder length) his curls also clump with no product and make shiny blonde ringlets, and he doesn’t care. Meanwhile I work at getting my 2a waves to clump.
My hair is like that underneath 😕 have you tried adding some layers or thinning out the back to take off some weight? Haha lucky guy! They never have to try lol 🤪
I haven't watch your other videos yet but will, so im not sure if you tried the denman brush? I have a similar hair type to you and when I use a denman brush it helps me get the best clumps I also use a mini denman and I think that help with getting better clumps then the regular denman brush
Girl you're my hair goal! I'm growing put a bob but Id like mine to be about your length. I admit I cheat( I use curling iron/ flat iron to make waves) but im ok wit I go now. You are so pretty! And you new more shares I'll share this on my Facebook.
Your hairs so pretty, and this is very helpful. Do you think silicone free conditioner works better for curl clumping? I like silicone conditioner for frizz control and to straighten my hair, but not sure if it’s good for when I want to go wavy/curly.
Thank you! I think it depends on how much you use it. Silicone build up can weigh your hair down but if you’re clarifying and just using it sometimes I don’t think it will affect your clumps! But I often use silicone free products and feel like my curls are healthier when I don’t use it quite as often 😊 but sometimes I also use products with silicone if my hair really likes it!
@@tabithagingerich thanks for your response. I’ll have to experiment, I have some silicone free conditioner as well and want to try some protein treatments.
Tabitha, I would like to learn some hair styles for wavy hair... Lately I feel boring with my hair down all the time and I don't know what to do in it between washes. What do you do?
Hi! I have a few videos on my wavy/curly playlist of hairstyles I like for my shorter hair! It’s grown out a bit but they’re still my go to’s.. I also love a good silk scarf hairstyle, I have a video on that too!
Hi Tabitha, this was such a great and informative video! My hair is pretty similar to yours (although my waves are a bit looser) and I’ve been thinking of getting highlights/balayage (similar to what you have rn) but I’m a bit scared that it might chance my hair texture and that it won’t curl up as much. Did you notice a significant change in yours and do you think it’s worth it? :)
Hi Maria! So glad you enjoyed 🤍 I didn’t really notice much of a difference the first time or two but after the third process I did notice a difference in my curl pattern and the way my hair soaks up moisture 😕 it just depends how bad you want it. I wanted lighter hair at least once so it was for me.. hope that helps!
@@tabithagingerich I see, I’m gonna think about it for a bit longer to see if it’s something I actually want to go through with... Thank you for the quick response, it really helped 😊
Thanks for watching! I don’t think it’s really heavy compared to other products I’ve tried. At least not the shampoo and conditioner! They’re the perfect balance between moisture and cleansing for me. But I’m sure there are lighter products out there if that’s what you’re looking for.. have you tried the hiBar solid maintain shampoo? It’s a great product if you want a shampoo that’s natural but still has a bit of a clarifying effect. Not heavy at all!
I have very fine hair so I have to use very light weight products, but my cousin has the same curl pattern but her hair is course and she can use much heavier products. Everyone’s hair is different.
Lol sorry I know at times it looked like I wasn’t using it but when I was shampooing I was, I just edited it out because it was repetitive.. and when I’m applying the other products I would have been turning it on and off constantly with sticky hands 🤪 thanks for watching!
omg our hair is almost the same rn but mines slightly curlier becuase i used to have 3a hair before i big chopped it the same length as urs 2 weeks ago out of frustration wit it now my curls have fallen cuz of curl shock 😭
That curl Volumizing jelly does not help my hair clump at all! It actually breaks up my clumps. Interesting how it works differently on different people and in different climates.
I start with a blunt cut (slightest angle to the back to avoid triangle hair 🤪) and ask for lots of texturizing with some “hidden layers” hopefully your stylist will understand this. There may be another term for it..

How do you figure out what your protein moisture balance is
@@Emma-ro3vz good question. I’d like to know too.

is it necessary to use that many products? Could I just use a curl smoothie and a mousse?
What is "roping?"
It looked amazing before you put the oil in but the praying hands on dry hair appeared to pull the coils a smidge straighter.
It's when you rub the hair in between your hands very softly to form a spiral, like how a rope looks.
Some people might call it twisting their hair
