Something that I think makes this story both sweeter and sadder is that it is somewhat reflective of real life. This short came out in in 1946, when the whaling industry was still in full swing, with up to 80,000 whales being killed each year and many species nearing extinction. Then, in the late 1960's, people from the US military that were listening for Russian submarines on hydrophones sent recordings of strange sounds to a pair of marine biologists called Robert Payne Scott McVay, who identified them as the vocalizations of whales. The discovery that whales sing gained extreme public interest and caused the foundation of new conservation movements, eventually leading to the ban of commercial whaling in most countries during the 1980's.
Thanks for posting this - I had the Willie the Whale album and picture book when I was a little kid - probably 1968 or 1969 - and never actually saw the full story. I visited my mom at the nursing home today and for some reason thought of the old Willie the Whale record/book she bought me over 50 years ago - and RUclips didn’t fail!
One of the things I find most impressive is that Nelson Eddy is able to give Willie and Tetti Tatti unique personalities in his vocal performance. I’m pretty sure he drew inspiration from impresarios and other singers he met and knew in his career. He was much more than just a beautiful voice.
The Make Mine Music home video excluded the last segment which is about Hill Billies..and so. ..this beautifully tragic segment becomes that anthology movie's Finale!

I cannot believe the following... This morning (August 30, 2024) for the first time since 1971 I thought of Willie the operatic whale. Saw it on a Sunday night on NBC in the Bronx, NY. My younger brother was 9 and I was ten. I was very excited watching something Disney--- until Willie was murdered. Yes, it haunted me for years and I was furious. From that day on I was through with anything Disney. To me the man was an old tyrant. How do you show something like that to children?? It was a masterpiece until the unfortunate scene. 😢😢
This was a great story but it was a sad mini classic.
There’s something so appealing about the design and smile. Not to mention the singing voice is just the best choice.
Every opera, no matter how cute, always ends with a bittersweet tragedy…
And there's something heartbreaking about this too, it's the welfare of whales and dolphins that are in constant threat by men.
That's opera for you. Always a sad ending.
“Well, what did you expect from an opera? A happy ending?!”

The poor North Atlantic Right Whale came a hair's breadth from extinction

My sister and I had this on VHS. So many memories
I bet Willie and Ariel would’ve been great friends.

Hey, wasn't there supposed to be other shorts after that, such as "Ferdinand the Bull" and"Lambert the Sheepish Lion"?

@monstar9071 your not the only one
I remember them also. I miss my childhood when I heard them in the 90’s
Yeah, but they were edited out of this upload, probably because of copyright issues with Disney

What piece is that from, the end angel whale sings?

This is something that would mark the start of the whale conservation movement.
Oh my god! He got shot!
That's right. And I knew that.
RIP Oliver Wallace (1887-1963)
How come you skipped "Ferdinand the Bull (1938)" as well as "Lambert the Sheepish Lion (1952)" (narrated by Sterling Holloway)?

When I saw this film as a kid, I got so sad about his death. 😆
That because people ever Experience Miracles or see a miracle 13:54
What if he was in the public domain (not you steamboat willie)
I once had his redesign I made on DeviantArt because his OG design isn't a baleen whale at all but he is a sperm whale.
