Cotto wasn't at his best either. Reality was Sergio had bad knees. One gave out in his fight with Chavez, and the other one gave out against Cotto. Wasn't so much the punch. He couldn't even ground himself.

Canelo did better against Kermit Cintron than Martinez, compare each fight. Also, Martinez sailed away from Pirog and GGG. Great career nonetheless. Cotto beat him because Martinez defense mostly comes from his legs. Defense in boxing is more complex than that.

Sergio admitted having made mistakes before the Cotto fight and states already having paid for those mistakes by fighting Cotto and loosing the fight. I take it as Sergio putting the loss behind.

Canelo would have destroyed Martinez, even if his knees were healthy. Yes, Martinez lost to Cotto, primarily due to bad knees, but even if his knees were "okay", Canelo was far younger than Martinez. He was a much harder puncher than Cotto, who could not hurt Canelo with anything, and at times looked like Canelo had no respect for Cotto's punches. Canelo was vicious to the body, knew how to set traps and cut off the ring, better counter puncher than Martinez, and was not a seek and destroy fighter with his chin out. His defense was on par with Martinez and has a granite chin. And if you take the absolute best version of Martinez, a prime Martinez, vs a prime Canelo, then Canelo knocks him out, and I was a big Sergio Martinez fan and wanted so badly for Floyd to fight him. That would have been great.

Sergio was great at his best. That top Martinez would have been a great fight vs GGG or Canelo. But his legs went. They were gone vs Murray and he struggled a bit there. Defo gone vs Cotto one of only 3 defeats. The other two were vs Margarito early in his career - and we all know what Margarito was doing with those gloves!! The only other "defeat" was a points loss to the hugely avoided Paul Williams. A fight I thought was at least a draw probably a win for Sergio. He put it right in their rematch though eh? KO of the year and all that....
So his record is a lot better than many would think. That draw vs Cintron was a joke. He KOd him.
Sergio has lived a clean life free form drugs and alcohol so his age is not as relevant as many think. Just as Hopkins was still good at that age. Not sure about the level he is fighting at now though. Needs to step up in class before he can challenge the top boys. You cannot go for titles based on 10-15 years ago. Personally I doubt he still has it at the top level but until he steps up we will not know for sure. But as Martinez has worked with Eddie Hearn (in Kiko Martinez fights) I believe he may get a shot at one of the top boys at middleweight....
