I just purchased a Z4M roadster. I remember back in the day I wasn't really a fan of the styling, and I thought the coupe was downright ugly. Fast forward 15 years and I absolutely love the styling of the roadster, and I think the coupe is stunning. That's good design. It grew on me over the years which is the mark of a car you won't quickly tire of. The scarcity of Z4M cars will ensure they appreciate in the coming years. Love the video, 'Everyday Driver,' has the best production of any youtube car reviewers I have watched. Keep up the good work.
I'm on my second z4m. First a roadster, now the coupe. For me the looks of the coupe just demand a second look when you park it. Love these cars. Harsh ride as standard but that can be mitigated with better kit. Great video!
Great video. Not forgotten among BMW fans; These cars have a cult-like following.
Ive driven one in anger and it is a good car to make you feel good anytime, looks stunning too....
I love my 2006 Z4M Coupe. Its same color as this one but a walnut interior with wood grain dash. This car is just fun to drive.
Had one for 6 yrs, go it track prepared and used it as a daily for a couple of yrs. Now, I'm a BMW nut for 20 yrs and the wife has a Z3 Coupe. To those interested, its one of the all time greats from ///M. Apart from the usual camshaft issues (that any high revving high specific output engine has), its a rock solid car. Buy well and maintain it well. Gorgeous looking car, very rare, very exiting (lighter and more direct than an E46 M3). Worse town car in the world (and I'm comparing to a 997 GT3). 3.0 si is a little sweeter to drive. With the M you need to up in your game and pay attention, but when you're on it, its very special. Its just not for the faint hearted, it likes being driven skillfully.
Camshaft issues? What camshaft issues?? The S54's issues are rod bearings and VANOS. Never heard of a single camshaft issue.
@@BrakRulesAll Exhaust side specifically. Its a fairly well known issue within trackday BMW petrol head guys/girls circles. Wear to the shaft happens when the 1st oil change has not been done properly (within 2000 mile) and/ or the car has been abused. Thats why a regular shim adjustment should be done on Isnp 2. I posted this on Z4M forums years ago.
Compared to the fantastic E46 M3, the Z4M has much quicker steering, larger front brakes (both directly from M3 CSL) and also around 100kg’s lighter!
Per Eldh I’m glad they gave it a manual transmission and not the SMG from the CSL. That car had a cardboard trunk bed. Who’s idea was that? I don’t know why I ever had a thing for the SMG M3. I think it was just curiosity. I think many would agree that phasing out manual transmissions for ones with paddle shifters was a mistake. Yeah, I get the idea of doing it so people keep both hands on the wheel, but it has backfired. People still drive with one hand on the wheel and one on their smartphone, since it is not mandatory to use manual mode in the newer cars. So people just put them in automatic and screw around on their phones. Driving with a manual may have been a pain in slow traffic, but at least it kept drivers focused on shifting and not stalling out, and most importantly kept them focused on just driving. As far as I know, the Ferrari Enzo is the one car that had the right idea. The car was only in manual mode, and no place for lazy ass auto. I know I’m off on a tangent, but we need manual cars back, even though it’s against the odds of it happening.
You're killing me!
The price hikes on this car started a year ago.
Alpha Lobster Double! I should have fucken bought one for the mid 20s
I just love the profile of these cars. That hunkered down ass, with that long hood. Beautiful.
Classic engine, classic layout, classic styling...future classic. The Z4 of all things! I don't think any other Z4s will be worth diddly except the M Coupes. The 3.0 coupes may hold their value OK too.
No need to go to Autotrader as I bought an M Coupe last December (to replace a 3.0Si Coupe)!
And I just love it. lol
How does it compare withthe 3.0si?
what a road.....and what a car....they are very under rated, but have a drive in one and you will love it.....i have a z4 roadster and drive it most days to go to meetings, shopping, etc and on the british town roads it does crash over bumps and a bit harsh (but that's just because our roads are getting shitter and shitter every year from lack of investment!!!), but get out of the towns and on to the back roads and dam its fun......makes a good excuse to take the scenic route....lol
Really nice car, I remember I wanted to buy one but got scared of reliability. I had E46 M3 btw that was CPO
What are the routes use in your videos to test the vehicles? They are some of the most breathtaking areas that I've ever seen.
Great review guys! Cool weird looking coupe
Looks so good, esp from the back
"this is bad for my wallet" lol
Is Z4 coupe 3.0si okay or should i look for a Z4M Coupe?
awesome video and opinions :)
Is flame surfacing that bad? You see it everywhere now from Honda to Kia to Mercedes... look at the current C-class.. similar lines in the side profile.
So glorius when clutch breaks down on warm day for no reason.
I remember wanting one of these in high school. 10 year old bmw maintenance would be hard to justify vs a 370z though. fair comparison?
James Inkrott straight 6 vs V6 BMW all the way.
This is actually a BMW straight-six (3.2 liter, the E46 M3 engine), butter-smooth with an 8k redline. Maintenance has not been too bad; a big service every 15k miles or so. Probably a little more expensive than a 370Z, but much more rare.
Less than 2000 made? Maybe for the US...
1815 built for North America, somewhere around 4400 total for the world, I think.
Yeah, these are the kind of numbers I had in my head
I there any other place in the world that matters?
david dykeman china?
The more I hear S56 the more I regret selling the e46 ///3
I don't mind having no screen. But the lights are ugly. Nice car though.
It does have a screen (closed in the video) on top of the dashboard. Navigation system is outdated (Google Maps is better), but it also runs the 10-speaker Carver stereo system. There is an Aux-In port near the bottom of the dashboard.
The front is a deal breaker
I love the front design, and the rest too. Anders Warming is a legendary designer already.
The IP looks best without the (dated) screen, which is why I chose mine. It’s also got manual seats which with no-nav saves 30kg’s of cerb weight!
Agreed, I have a hard time with BMWs that the front lights don't line up with the kidney grill.
I watched the entire video and there is nothing in it that makes me want to drive that car. It may be a great car, but the video does nothing to tap into the emotion of driving the car. The Smoking Tire has much better reviews but those cars all tend to be modified.
"Not the best gearbox in the world" He says then completely fluffs the next change!, der
Jeez man, "the ride" is too harsh to drive everyday? Okay Sally, tighten up your bra straps and secure your purse - it's going to be okay. :) I drive one of these every day (when I'm not riding my motorcycle) and love it. On my daily commute in, I won't even take phone calls. I just simply love to drive this thing. 112,000 miles and it couldn't feel any tighter - it drives like new. Amazing car!
Nice
What's a coep? It's coupe, not koep or whatever you're saying.
Its a Z4, not a CCC4
THE NEW SUPRA!
Would have been an AMAZING car - 500 pounds.
Nebo?
I bought my Z4M Coupe 6 years ago with 8K miles on the odometer and I've never even considered replacing it. I have visions of passing it onto my son when I'm too old to drive. The best thing about this car is that it's still relatively affordable, very reliable and incredibly fun to drive. If you buy one, you owe yourself a day at the track at least once.
This has been my favorit car since it came out. Still today this is the most beautiful BMW ever build IMO. Gonna buy it someday!
I'm buying one now, will take delivery when this virus thing is over. I just love reading praise like yours. The video is great. Mine is Sepang Bronze. I am so stoked!
It's pretty but the BMW 507 is my favorite BMW.
You got one yet chief? If not good luck!
It boils down to driving this car.... It's raw with pure driving dynamics. If you are a BMW guy, you know that the latest M cars have lost their true M dynamics. Yes they are fast, they look great but they have lost the feeling of a true drivers car. I have the Z4 M roadster and I look forward to every weekend to hear that glorious engine.
Totally agree. I have the roadster as well and the engine really is something isn't it? The great thing about these is they aren't Porsches so you don't expect them to be clinical and that's all part of the charm!
Kawai Chung yup, agreed. Roadster and coupe add such a pure driving experience. Enjoy!
I own Z4m roadster too. That engine in that car. It's just a tiny monster. I put some wider rear wheels and tires on it and it's just a race car for the streets. Just refined enough to be modern... but rough enough around the edges to be a hot rod.
Well put Andy. Cool looking fast cars are a lot different than cars that are fun to drive.
Like every other recent BMW, it's at least 500 lbs over it's ideal 'classic' weight of an M car. So it mitigates the excess weight with (mostly) mechanical grip. Which is fine on road tires... up until about 8/10ths when the suspension and lateral grip scrubs and/or slides off the line because a car that heavy always has extra momentum to sort out.
The 3.0si is worth a go, trust me :) Not as special as the Z4M, but it has it where it counts. The ride is a bit more supple, so it is more usable day to day, and it'll set you back a lot less.
Maarten Verheijen waiting for someone to write that
Maarten Verheijen yeah and plenty of power.
The car looks so much better in person especially with the M- front lip
The N52 engine is plenty reliable too. Mine is well maintained but regularly tracked hard and has almost 200k miles on it without any major mechanical issue so far. I would not have believed it if it wasn't mine...
longest I have owned a car was a 2007 E86 3.0SI coupe. Loved the car. The n52 is an absolute peach of an engine, great low end torque, and very smooth. I test drove the mcoupe vs the 3.0si and actually preferred the smoothness of the n52, the s54 is a bit rougher and raspy
I currently own one of each in coupe form. What nobody ever seems to mention is that the N52, with its magnesium block, is almost 200 pounds lighter than the S54. My 3.0si feels much more nimble and tossable than my Moupe.
I never thought this was a controversial design. Loved them from day one.
Me too
One of the best sounding engines ever imo
beautiful car. My neighbor had one and I was always staring at his driveway.
Are they driving in heaven?
Utah lol beautiful roads
Try the blue ridge parkway stretches from Virginia to Georgia
Nothing like deal's gap and Wolf Pen Gap on the east coast. You won't find another road like them.
in heaven you may only drive at five-tenths, apparently
Car's not "3,300 lbs" by the way. Standard equipment tips the curb at 3,150 lbs as listed by BMW. I've had the car on a scale and 3,125 as equipped with 1/2 tank of gas.
I'm buying one of these right now because of this video.
I don't think I've seen the guys react like this to any other car, even the ones they prefer. It felt like, to me, they were having a wow moment... every moment.
So, I'm buying one.
I currently own a Z4MC like the one tested here, and a 3.0si coupe. The 3.0si has the N52 motor, in 255HP tune in these cars, which is no slouch. With it's magnesium block it's also almost 200 lbs. lighter than the S54. The 3.0si feels much more nimbIe and light than that amount of weight difference would suggest. While I love driving them both, I think what I *really* want is a Z4M wreck that I can scavenge the hydraulic steering and rear LSD from. Those bits in the 3.0si would make it a better car than the M in my ever-so humble opinion.
Love it but for anything outside a track day (and even then, probably not as it isn't like it has ceramic brakes), I prefer my 2007 3.0Si. As the guy says at the 3 minute mark '3000, 3500 where is the power?' and then comments its there at 6000 rpm. That is great where he is driving at that moment but that isn't anyone's 'Everyday' so think about how fun it is revving down your street to your house at 6000 rpm. Meanwhile, the 3.0Si has all its power starting at 2000 rpm so its just so much more useable and it is no slouch either. It just pulls and pulls - sport mode making it very nice and responsive. The only thing I would really take from the Z4M would be the hydraulic steering. Don't get me wrong, the Z4M is beautiful and rare but the 3.0 is beautiful as well (slightly different rear exhaust layout) and its not like you see them every day either - I have seen 2 Z4M in my life and maaaaybe 8 3.0s.
True I’ve seen 4 Z4 roadsters out being driven 1 was a 2.5i and the other 3 were 3.0i haven’t seen anyone driving a 3.0si yet
The engine is normally aspirated royalty, hyper responsive and with an amazing and very hard, loud, dry and metallic rasp at the limit only equalled by racing engines and the packaging is excellent with a proper boot. But build is average, brakes are average (long travel making it even more difficult to heel and toe) the gearbox is a let down (nearly as much as in a Lotus) and the chassis albeit not bad is just not there: shocks, steering and dynamics are just not as good as they must be not as good as in an Exige and not as good as in a Cayman. Plus where in six boxer Porsche you can enjoy every single rev the BMW 6 in line only gives us its full character near the rev limiter. I know: I owned one happily traded for a 981S albeit if I had the means I would have kept the BMW as this Z4M is the best Bangle BMW ps if someone has got one in standard spec and wants to improve it for little money my advice would be: 1st thing to do is to change the springs for something made by Sachs, Bilstein, Ohlins or KW: considerable gains (but dont expect miracles!) for few ponies
I drive this car for a week I need a
chiropractor. It was way cool at first but that faded as your almost sitting on the back axil and that equals chiropractor time, just not for me.
I love all Bngle's cars. I think he did reinvented BMW design.
Love the style. Google a 1968 Triumph GT6 and compare. My sister had one of those, very raw and entertaining.
That’s a beautiful car. 1 million times better than what they have today
Loved the car, I own a ‘05 BMW Z4 2.5i but the guy driving in the video seems like a Nerd.
I just saw one yesterday in red and then remembered... "Wow, I totally forgot BMW came out with the Z4M!".
Yeah...I know the feeling. Had one back in 2007. Sold it some time later and cold never sleep well again. Until 2 months ago, when I decided to scratch the itch and look for one to own again (after 10 years!) . And with relentless quest, I found one! (they are rare). It lives in my garage now and I cant't help but drive it everyday. I unshamedly favour it over all my other cars. Z4M Coupe was born to be a classic. It already is, actually. It's one of the coolest thing on wheels nowadays.
love these cars, came close to buying one on several occasions when I sold my Cayman S. I bought the Z3M with the S54, one of 678 made and also a BMW 1M, one of 740 made. Both of those are keepers. Hope to have a Z4M someday.
Glenns Car Collection this very car is for sale
Glenns Car Collection is the Z3M just smaller? What's the point of getting the Z4M if you have that already
Dennis Zhu its a completely different car except the engine
Great question Dennis. I love all BMW's with the S54 engine, the Z3M, Z4M and E46 M3. Lots of videos of my Z3M and E46 M3's on my channel. Short answer, I love how the Z4M looks and drives. I currently own an S54 Z3M and I use to own an E46 M3 in Laguna Seca Blue, sunroof delete coupe with a 6 speed manual (unfortunately it was stolen).
The Z3M are the rarest, only 678 made with the S54. 1999-2002 Z3M has the S52 engine from the E36 M3. 2001-2002 Z3M's have the S54 engine from the E46 M3.
All Z4M's have the S54 and they actually only made about 1,500. I love how the Z4M looks and even though it shares an engine with the Z3M, they drive very differently, which is good. You could make a case to own both. The Z3M is high strung compared to the Z4M. Its a much calmer car, but still great, and the best news is, they only come in stick.
If I could only have one, the Z3M all the way, but you could get a nice Z4M for half the price of a S54 Z3M. Make mine Interlagos blue. I hope to add one to my collection one day, came close several times.
He meant to say "1999-2000 Z3M has the S52 engine... 2001-2002 Z3M's have the S54 engine".
Is it me or the new Supra looks just like this car from the side.
Lots of discussion of whether this car is expensive or not. That’s subjective but it looks like it’s not depreciating anymore either. BMW maintenance, yes, but not as complex as some of the other cars. For what it is a decent deal.
I recently acquired a 3.0si Coupe with the manual transmission (which in the US is actually rarer than the M) after a lot of internal debate between it and the M version. I don't regret it at all. I use it as a daily driver and the slightly softer ride and larger trunk are perfect for that. You still get a great sound from the N52 as well, plus it has more horsepower per pound than my old E93 335! The only things I want from it over the M are the quad exhaust look, a bit of the engine sound (but I think an Eisenmann exhaust can fix that) and the hydraulic steering rack. Love the E86.
2021 and they’ve nearly doubled in value :(
Imagine this car with M3 CSL intake modification. 😍
I remember these, when I was working at a BMW dealership. I liked them, but simply put, they cost a lot and were really harsh. People that could afford them (i.e., older people) couldn't live with the rough ride. While those that could live with the ride, (i.e., younger people) couldn't afford it.They also didn't carry the social currency other cars at that price point carried. Most people viewed them in the same vein as '00 Thunderbird; something for old people to cruise in.
ZIM252 social hipsters not buying true geeky enthusiast cars??? Tell me something new.........
This is my Z4M Coupe, and thanks to Todd, Paul and Chance for such a nice job. Sadly, my employment situation has changed and I have to sell this amazing machine. It has 49.7 k miles, and has been meticulously maintained. It has a couple of blemishes, but you can see by the video that it is in outstanding shape. I'm asking $29.5k, and the car is located just outside Salt Lake City. Not for the faint of heart!
lol shut up
Don Vito Corleone it really is his and it really is for sale. John is a good friend of mine.
Make me an offer i can't refuse...
Do you finace? Lol
Hey man, I’m looking at buying a Z4. However I’m 6 foot 6 inches. Will I fit?
This car reminds me an old super cars concept like aston db4 zagato, 50' and 60' jags, merc 300SL or Ferraris but build with newest technology. Classic super car with only one porpouse, be enjoyable.
I owned a roadster for about 3 years...it kept me very happy and cheerful whenever i had to rev it...fantastic memories!
there's a reason why the new supra is based off of the 06-08 z4 coupe line, but not z4m coupe that's just on another level.
Well fancy this. Salomondrin just bought the older Z3 version M Coupe, and those cars have already begun to appreciate in value, which makes these cars a relative bargain right now. Legendary cars by BMW
It doesn't look like a clown shoe.
I currently own a 2004 Z4 3.0i. When I first drove it I fell in love with the car. The car is amazing in the corners and that M54 sounds glorious when you push it. I sold my S2000, which I regret, and one day I just needed another convertible and the BMW just was fantastic.
I loved these when they came out and missed my opportunity to get one before the values started climbing in Canada. Awesome purists BMW!!
I think they're very affordable in Canada. I'm always checking the prices in Toronto just so I know what mine is worth. The coupe you can easily get between 30-35k, the roadster between 25-30k with mileage under 100,000 km. For 25-30k you can get a new car sure, but you're looking at 200 HP in a GT86 or Civic Si. A well maintained Z4M is much better bang for your buck. Not to mention, the engine will last forever if you take care of it.
Andrew Blewski just following up, they’re up to $40k for 2007, 2008 examples :0(
I hated the look when it came out, but now I dig the design.
Recently acquired a low mileage 2006 Z4 M Roadster, inter-lagos blue. No frills, awesome road machine.
I hankered after an early 1970's Nissan 240Z, But they are now stupid money in the UK in 2024, £50K for a restored example anyone? The E86 3.0 si Coupe is a 2000's version of a 240Z IMO because Datsun/Nissan lost it with the 350/370Z that just drink petrol and fall apart with rust in my UK climate! For a fraction of the price you can get your bum in the driving seat of an E86 3.0 si 6 speed manual, I know where my money is now going!
I think the BMW Z4 and Z3 is better than an Audi TT RS of the same year.
They are more expensive than used Caymans and they are outperformed by used Caymans.
I love this car. 😜
Surprisingly short video for such a special car
Perhaps the most beautiful car since the Jaguar XKE type. In fact I would put them 1st equal. Do I buy one and b*gger my pension or do I use some common sense.? (The latter was always over rated)
I love the girth of the steering wheel. My kind of helm.
I bet you love the girth of a lot of things.
I've never seen a coupe! I think you guys just discovered the ancestor of the new Supra right there. from the rear it looks like a Supra. wow. I would love to find one of those.
Hey Nissan this is how you make a successor to the Fairlady Z!
I was just about to post the same thing... this is the spiritual successor to the 240Z
I'm right up in peoples trumpets when I drive my Z4M Coupe too, you got it. i.imgur.com/JaKxlq3.jpg
Don’t forget this was the last year it was made in America 🇺🇸 !! 🎉especially as a solid coupe lol
great car but I'll stick to my Z3M coupe
Like my 2005 Z4 3.0 roadster
The body style reminds me so much of the old James Bond Aston Martin.
This car today is called the Toyota Supra. Especially now that the Supra is getting a manual transmission.
I have one of these! Freaking awesome drive! Perfect design I must say! And in Red!
Z3 M COUPE is the Star for me 😍
I've always likes these. It's a shame though that i can't recall ever seeing one that wasn't greyscale. One was near my old townhome and it was definitely less boring than a regular BMW. I can't believe it's like 3300lbs. I wouldn't mind one in a nice blue or red.
Ooh, i bet it is.
Looks a little bit like the upcoming Toyota Supra.🤔
I blew up one of these while working at a used dealer......they are interference engines if anyone is wondering......
So glad I picked one up before prices shot up
Update prices are even higher. Still own mine. Pussys
I had my sights set on one of these when they were out. One complaint I heard was that they were too cramped. I sat in one. Wasn’t too bad. It’s compact and simplistic. When the roadster version was on Top Gear, it was shown to have a frisky back end, which is a bit of a good thing if it teaches you driving discipline.
I'm 6'2 240 lbs and it fits me like a glove. Bought one when new in 2007, kept it 8 years, sold it in 2015 because I wanted an E59 M5. One year later I had no love for the M5 and eventually bought another Z4M, which I will **never*** sell. It's a special car.
Really like the style of your reviews. Always wanted to drive an z4m also
Looks kinda like the new Jag F type.
bought the roadster this year and will "have" to buy a cooper next year :)
These things are stupid expensive they are not forgotten
I love this car. When my Miatas engine exploded, this was one of the cars I was looking at. It was between the z4m, ap1 s2000, and c5 Corvette. I ended up falling in love with my s2000. But the z4m was a very close second.
i went with S2000 here, as well. had my father's E36 US-spec M3 for a while before.
i can afford to buy all three, but only have room for one.
3 years on, no regrets, and a better CofO and motorsport-like experience than the other two.
a classic, brilliant machine :)
I just bought the cheapest BMW couple in the states and its arrived! i have the video of me buying it on my page! any suggestions for upgrades would be great!
Not forgotten jem, just hard to find
Every time I look at it it makes me smile
I think this car is better than the new Bupra I mean Supra. And it has a manual transmission.
