When I was young and footloose free, I lived by, "if I don't like it, leave" no one had to tell me and it was not always a case of not liking a place, I didn't like to stand still in the one place too long and being a mechanic, I could get a job anywhere. I often thought I might end up in Tassie, loved it when I circumnavigated it with a couple of friends. I was talking to a friend from WA the other night and said to him, I haven't been to any Aussie state I don't like, they all had something great about them. Yes Tassie people are very friendly was my experience.

Thank you! Yes there’s nothing wrong with living by “if you don’t like it, leave” - I can say with complete confidence though that this is not something that a Tasmanian would ever say to someone, unless that individual was being particularly rude…

I have worked with people like Ashley Faye over the years and I actually stopped watching her because I thought she was very opinionated. How people like Ashley get people upset is they often come from a large organisation or from a city and tell the locals how they should be doing things (over my 62 years I have worked with many of them).
In the last few years my nephew moved from Sydney to Dubbo NSW and my advice to him was, do not tell the locales how they should be doing things. And my advice to anyone who is going to move from a large population center to a small one is, ask a lot of questions before you offer advice. But you are right, living in any area for two years is not long enough to make you an expert on that area.

It’s just common sense, isn’t it, to really “get the lay of the land” before jumping in boots & all in the work place & giving your opinion!!
She is somewhat too opinionated! I can imagine how unpopular she probably made herself, she certainly doesn’t seem to understand the importance of diplomacy!

She comes across as being somewhat passive aggressive, I’d imagine that many people would consider advice from an individual such as that to be less than welcome…. There is a fine line between advice & criticism right??!

I'm a former Tasmanian too, I moved from my home town of Hobart to Sydney last year for better work opportunities (and better infrastructure). I still love my home state on a fundamental level even despite its issues. I feel that you can't really judge an entire state having only experienced a very small segment of it, whilst having reduced income and free time on account of being a student (speaking from experience, I'm graduating from UTAS this year after 2.5 years on campus, 1.5 years in Syd).
    Thanks for making this :)

She must have been complaining a lot for Tasmanian’s to say “If you don’t like it , leave “ . I tell people that who visited Europe then come back telling you that Australia sucks etc and when I am sick of their winging , I tell them to go and move to Europe . Lol

i saw her on another utube video where she admitted she went home to the states for a visit & she didn't like it anymore, was saying how much better it was in Tassie, so it seems something changed , as a student that moves regularly her lifestyle would be very sheltered with other students, school world is very different to the real world & sounds as if she just came there criticizing everything to get that response, astounds me that travellers do not get that insulting the place they are in is akin to walking into someone's home & telling them you don't like it, she can go find somewhere else that will suit her highness

Hi CK, I listened to this video before I listened to Ashleigh's original video.
I thought this video was a bit too insensitive but after listening to Ashleigh's video there is some deserved criticism.
Ashleigh didn't really offer up any good arguments as to why Tasmania is not a good place to live. However, she is entitled to her opinion and her lifestyle choices. I would judge Ashleigh based on she is in Australia because she wants to be a marine biologist and wants to work with seals. That is a great career choice but she needs to live where the seals are; so lifestyle considerations should be secondary.
Understandably, as she is in her 20's, she finds Melbourne more exciting and stimulating than Hobart. That is fair and she should have said this in her video and may explain why she felt unhappy in Hobart. Ashleigh is lucky to get the best of both worlds; we have seals in Victoria and she can land a job and live in a more happening city. What would Ashleigh do if Melbourne, and say, Rockhampton swapped city sizes? If Rockhampton was Australia's second largest city of 5 million but no seals off their waters; and Melbourne was another big town or small city comparable with Ballarat and Bendigo, and have seals off their waters?
As for the way Ashleigh comes across to Australians, I don't know any better, but maybe it is the New Jersey girl in her. The way she has spoken about NJ she needs to be a bit pushy to get by. I wouldn't hold that against her, she needs more time to adjust.

What I think she is trying to say is that a lot of smaller towns in Australia have this mentality of if you don't like our town you can leave. Even I've heard people say that in Newcastle NSW as well.

    • @CheekyKoala
      @CheekyKoala  2 месяца назад +2

@@LlamaHannah She was pretty explicit in saying that this was specifically said to her by people in Tasmania. I understand that there are some places where people will say “if you don’t like it leave”, but Tasmanians are super friendly, almost to a fault, they just would never say that to people- quite the opposite actually- there is an almost global rejection disphoria in Tasmania: Tasmanians get such a hard rap from other states that they will try to encourage people to see the positives & stay rather than tell people to sod off!

@@CheekyKoala Yeah thats very true about Tasmanians and most Australians. I think maybe the people or person she upset said if your gonna complain and be annoying told her to leave then in a joke way, and as an American she didn't understand our sarcasm and sense of humour and took it literally. Who knows though as she doesn't explain.

Give it a go, see if you fit in. But if you don't like it don't criticize, the reason is usually yourself. Trying to make them suite how you want them to be.
Tassie myself I'm still six of one and half a dozen of the other if I could live there or not. Hobart is how Wollongong was in the 1990's, the Gong I remember before Sydney invaded us. Country Tassie was like the smaller towns around where I was on the sheep properties in SA around late 90's early 2000's. Only defence except for building style was grass and trees instead of dirt and Mallee scrub. Don't know if I could do the cold but, don't like cold. That and just being such a bloody hassle to get to the Gong when I want is the main drawback that say I'm six less from a dozen. Getting to off track. Cheers again for the video, enjoy them
