Good info, BUT if a client defaults on an agreement, implementing legal action can be very costly. In Ontario, Canada, “initiating” a small claims action will easily cost $100 and take months. In addition, the forms must be delivered in person, and they don’t have to attend for the first three hearings - but I have to. Is it worth it for $ 600?

Do you typically allow a client to provide materials? I find far too often people buy cheap materials that are far more difficult to work with, and then they're frustrated when I only want to discount the cost of the materials and not my work/time. Obviously, something like a sentimental mirror that was mentioned is a little different, but I don't typically let people provide materials anymore. Cheap or difficult materials TANK my speed and are frustrating, so I'm almost never happy with the pay rate by the time I'm done messing with cheap materials.
